This is the first time I have written a bad review, but this was the worst experience I have had at a restaurant in years. The waiter was never found, my wife ordered a fish and she had to wait 30 minutes until he came back and told us they didn't have anymore fish! Was hoping this place would be the new go to restaurant instead of moonstone in little neck. Super impressed with the decor, beautiful plates and glasses used. Ordered up lots of dishes including whole lobster, Beijing duck, and a bottle of resling. Unfortunately the food was below average. First of all everything was served lukewarm; inexcusable for a restaurant with only 3 other tables The duck was so anemic & dry that they really offer this dish as duck jerky. We went there last Saturday night for dinner. We had some of the basic dishes like sesame chicken, beef with scallions and pork lo mein. The food was average. It was not great and not bad. Right in the middle. I like my food served very hot and two of the dishes were hot in the middle and the edges were getting cool. The waiter must of not served the food right away. Also, the parking lot is too small and a real pain. People are waiting for you to get into your car and leave so they could park. read more

Was very excited to try Master Chef on a Sunday afternoon with our party of 6. We had tried on a previous Saturday night, but it was too crowded for us. This venue had been several different mediocre Chinese place in the past, so it was really nice to see how they improved the decor and brought a much needed feeling of relaxed fine dining to Long Island. The service was perfect. Warm, friendly and very accommodating. Our tea cups and water never ran dry. They suggested a nice mai tai for my brother, whose birthday we were celebrating. They happily adjusted the spice level of a dish for my aunt. We never felt rushed, even when we stayed after the check to chat. All our dishes were cleared promptly, and leftovers packaged up quickly, separately bagged. The food was universally delicious. We tried the pastrami egg rolls, hot and sour soup, spring rolls and beef satay appetizers, all superb. We each had a soup dumpling from an order of 6 (very generous). I had the prawn and scallops in black bean sauce, which had all fresh ingredients. I sampled the honey walnut prawn and seafood stuffed eggplant which were yummy. Others at the table got pork dishes they loved (twice cooked and shredded). We left full and happy. This is definitely more of a special occasion type of restaurant, and it is priced accordingly. If you want casual cheap Chinese food, this is not it. Come here for the lovely decor, upscale service, and a mix of both authentic Chinese and American palate friendly cuisine with an elegant, thoughtful flare. read more

Went for early dinner tonight with my daughter. Truly great experience. Staff was very friendly and attentive. Everything we ate was tasty, light and plentiful. It was busy but there was no rush, which was nice. The presentation of each dish was thoughtful and appealing. The place was really nice, clean and inviting. Very Good Chinese Food, Beautiful Newly Renovated Restaurant The restaurant probably used to be a diner, but they did a great job with the renovation. There are very large booths by the window and spacious seating throughout. Service has been very nice for dine in & take out. First off me and my wife have been waiting for this establishment for a while . So tonight we decided to give it a try since we know the weekend would be more difficult to get a table . First off its valet service only , once we walked in we were very impressed with the elegant decor . We were immediately seated and the booths were very spacious . We ordered the seafood soup for two and it was delicious, hot and very flavorful. My wife ordered the crispy red snapper and I ordered the char broiled lamb . The red snapper was a large size dishes but for 38 dollars it should be . The lamb chops were cooked perfectly could of been a little bigger but I was ok with it . First off the decor is nicely done and the manager greeted me enthusiastically at the door. The place was about 50% occupied. The clientele appeared to be a high percentage of asians, which I generally judge to be a good sign. However, at 50% full in the restaurant, the parking was 110% occupied and I am sure that will become an issue on a busy night. The food was pretty good. General Tso's was spicy, not too much breading and a good size portion and the fried rice was very tasty, but at twice the price of a regular take-out it needs to be good. Hot and sour soup had generous chunks of tofu, plenty of mushroom and was also on the spicy side. The crackers however were very greasy and tasted of the veggie oil they had been fried in. There was no soy sauce supplied, not sure if that is policy or an oversight. Will probably order again, but it is a bit spendy for a Chinese take-out lunch menu. read more

Lunch today with friends on my suggestion, on entering furniture and decorations were so dusty that others had actually signed their names in the dust. We should have left right there and then. Our waiter was so unpleasant (never smiled) that he influenced our entire experience to the negative, orders were incorrect, lo mien was tasteless, rice was clumpy. The entire experience (dining is experienced with all ones senses) was one of the worst restaurant experiences I ever had. Needless to say this is the last time Master Chef will see us. read more

I really enjoyed this place. I arrived with wife and granddaughter in tow one Saturday just as the place was opening. I didn't expect the fancy linens or top-shelf service, but was grateful for both. Granddaughter ordered Peking duck and ribs, wife ordered something fancy and I had pepper steak. Altogether too much and altogether delicious. Chinese cuisine has come to Long Island's Gold Coast with the opening of Master Chef in Syosset. You know this the minute you drive up and hand your keys to the valet. You'll know it the minute you step inside the ornate, well-appointed vestibule and dining rooms. You'll know it when you see your waiter, attired in black shirt, maroon tie and black suit (the bussers wear black shirts and gold-accented vests). And you'll know it when you take your first peak of the menu, with bowls of soup starting at $5 and a whole Peking Duck available for $69! Reservations, available through OpenTable are a necessity during peak dining periods. Seating includes large round tables and wide booths. We sat in a booth on our recent visit and this proved to be really uncomfortable. There is a huge gap between the beautifully set table and the bench. I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat to reach the table. Service, although I had heard of issues, was not a problem at a Sunday dinner. Our food was well prepared, made with quality ingredients and tasty. We started with beef skewers--the typical teriyaki steak sticks (2 for $8) and Taiwan pork buns (2 for $8) -- slices of pork belly, crushed peanuts and cilantro enclosed by a bao. Nice textures and taste. For mains we shared a bland, but tender, honey chicken ($22) oddly served upon a fried Eggo waffle; double-cooked pork (not pork belly-, which disappointed but nonetheless was a tasty blend of meat, extra firm tofu, mushrooms, cabbage and brown sauce; Supreme short ribs with garlic ($32)--four tender braised ribs and garlic cloves glistening in a deep brown, star-anise sparked sauce; and eggplant with garlic sauce ($12) with added tofu ($4) for our house vegan. The eggplant was tender, the sauce a bit short on garlic flavor. Pots of chrysanthemum tea were complimentary, but there are sodas and alcoholic beverages (no BYOW). Tsing Dao beer is $7. Wines, available only by the glass at $10 a pour, are generic varieties (no Riesling, unfortunately). Highly disappointing in this regard. There are plenty of other Chinese eateries in the region offering quality food, often with larger portions and lower prices. If you need the ornate dining room, well, this is the place to be. read more

Nice ambience. Cannot however comment on the food. Arrived on a Saturday night at 5:15, so place was pretty empty. Waiter came and gave us water and noodles with duck sauce. That was the last we saw of anyone for at least 15 minutes. No one asked us if we wanted a drink or appetizers. We watched the wait staff walk around but literally not one came over to our able. TOTALLY OVERPRICED! Yes, the food was a step up from local take-out but the prices were completely ridiculous. Half a Peking duck, yes half, not a whole, duck was $69. It does not state on the menu that this is the price for half a duck. The wine was also crazily priced. A bad pinot noir by the glass was $12. We frequent this restaurant and generally like the food. We ordered in and woman took the order and it took her 15 minutes to get it right and understand it. When order came 2 of the 5 dishes were totally wrong. We called back and she said thats what you ordered and gave us an argument for a half an hour. We simply said pls pick it up we are no more than 3 blocks away and bring the correct 2 dishes. More arguing with someone who clearly doesn't speak English. This was a terrible experience and beyond annoying. I don't care how great your food is you do not do this to regular customers. For customer service you just earned a zero if you do this enough guaranteed you will be out of business read more

I give it 2 stars because decor is nice and the staff are very nice. However the service was not good and the food much worse. Our waiter said that there were still complications in the kitchen and could he bring out the dishes as they were finished. We said yes. But, then all 4 came out at once and 2 of them were cold! To top it off, under the header for vegetarian items was country style tofu. I asked what was in the dish and I was told mushrooms. When the dish came, there were a couple of other vegetables which on its own would be ok. But when I bit into something I thought was meat, I asked and was told it was pork! Nowhere on the menu did this vegetable dish mention meat! They took off the cost of the dish, which was the least they could do, and did offer to make something else. But by this time we couldn't get out of there fast enough. We saw a table of 6 get up and leave before they even ordered. It turns out they called ahead to make a reservation as well as ask if there was a corkage fee. They were told yes, but when they sat down the manager very loudly said no alcohol because they did not have their liquor license yet! I have yet to see a successful restaurant open in this spot over many years. Here's another one destined to fail. Oh, and did I mention that my fiancé spent the night in the bathroom because the food made him sick? read more

In fact, I don't ever recall having chicken in a Chinese restaurant to be that tough. We will not return. Master Chef is the first venture of a mainland Chinese restaurateur in America , and a very successful venture at that ! One goes to a fine restaurant to relax , to be cared for , to have comforts one might not have at home or in other establishments ......and in this , Master Chef succeeds masterfully ! The food is excellent , but of course many dishes are on the sweet side to cater to Long Island tastes . I can not say enough about the service : warm , considerate , attentive and responsive to one's needs . While the menu is a little pricey , it is no more so than other fine north shore establishments ( the exceptional tea served for free , I believe Longing , as well as the fruit delivered with the check , actually make the meal a bargain when compared to other locales ) . With very comfortable seating , beautiful décor , gentle music and clean , well designed lavatories , how could one complain ? We love the place ! By the way , this establishment replaces the old Empire Szechuan , a run down ( albeit with good food ) extension of a Manhattan eatery . read more

Place is absolutely beautiful. Palate is more Chinese so not always intense flavors but was very delicious. We had the emerald Fish ball soup to start and the broth was amazing. Also had the King Prawn with mashed pumpkin that was unexpectedly good. We then had the master chef whole fish- a Chinese classic that was great. We also had bowls of the Taiwanese Minced Pork Rice and cake which was from some awesome bakeshop but I can't put my finger on which. Yes, it's a bit pricy but I'd rather have good quality and pay for it. Otherwise I'd just get take out! read more

I am mystified by the many poor reviews of this restaurant. While I can only assume there were some poor experiences, we did not have any of these experiences and, to the contrary, everything was quite nice. Granted that we had dinner for 6 on a Wednesday night so it was not packed, but from the greeting at the door, to each of the servers and other staff, everyone was friendly and accommodating. Agreed that the portions are not huge, but they are not small. The only smallish item I can comment on is the steamed and fried vegetable dumplings, which in my experience are typically 2-3 times the size. Nevertheless, the dumplings were fine and the dipping sauce was good. I had the TriCup Chicken (recommended by the server over the Honey Chicken) and there was plenty of food--not a huge portion, but not smallish by any means. We also had vegetable fried rice (no egg requested and granted) and it was a large portion enough for 4 and tasty. Others in our party were very happy with what they ordered. The restaurant itself is nicely appointed in with a mix of modern and traditional Chinese style. I disagree with Kona K. on how the place looks. It looks fine and was obviously created to stand out from the common decor of a traditional American Chinese restaurant. I did not find any problem with it. The soda glasses look custom and are unique and the chopsticks are quite unusual (essentially, there are disposable wooden tips that you take from a sealed envelope and insert into fancy sticks with a metal housing to capture the disposable tips). The only suggestion I would make is that the servers should inform new diners that the small package at the top of their place setting contains the wooden tips for the chopsticks. I figured it out, but after the appetizers were served. We would come back. The menu choices give you dishes that are not on a typical menu (although traditional favorites can be found) and while some are pricey, the diversity is good. And by the way, there were two large parties of Chinese diners in the restaurant and anyone can tell you that if Chinese diners are there then the food is real. read more

There is nothing about this restaurant that is "ordinary Chinese". From the valet parking to the beautifully appointed interiors, this restaurant is one of a kind. The host and serving staff are gracious and helpful, the food reminiscent of Hong Kong. The dishes are beautifully prepared and delicious. This is not your grandfather's Chinese restaurant. Our first visit, and our only frustration was that we couldn't eat everything on the menu, but we will be back to try. read more
