I almost feel bad writing this review, because I remember how awesome Masago used to be when they first opened a few years back. Everyone thrives over the half priced sushi deal and to be honest it's a great deal. However, recently I just feel that half priced sushi means half priced quality. To start, I got vegetable tempura, which was honestly just too greasy for me to finish, I understand that it's fried, and obviously it can be a little greasy but this was just too much for me. The vegetable tempura was falling apart and I just gave up on it. I ordered the Boston Roll, Philadelphia Roll, and Spring Jamie Roll. The Boston Roll was my favorite, but the Philadelphia Roll just had no taste. I liked the Spring Jamie Roll in the past, but this time it just wasn't the same. By checking into Masago, I got a Yelp Deal for a free dessert, so I ordered the Coppa Caffe, which is described as "Fior di latte gelato with a rich coffee and pure cocoa swirl." I hate to complain about something that was given for free, however, this description didn't match the dessert item that came out. What came out was vanilla ice cream with almonds, which I had to brush off due to the fact that I'm allergic to almonds. There was no mention of there being almonds in the dessert, there was no coffee swirl, and at the bottom there was a cherry type flavor which was never mentioned in the menu. There was freezer burn on the edges of the ice cream, so I'm guessing it has just been in the freezer for a while. Around 2-3 AM last night, I woke up with pain in my stomach and ended up getting sick from my dinner. I haven't gotten sick from food ever in my life, let alone sushi. Not sure what's going on here, but I wish I had read the reviews prior to coming here for the first time in over a year. It seems that a few other people have gotten sick from here before. I'd give it no stars if I could. Order from here when we don't feel like driving for sushi. It's mediocre at best. Had sushi delivered tonight. It was obviously rotten. We called. They offer 10% off our next order? No apologies...no "can we bring you something else". So we tell them we want our $ back for the food we didn't eat. Driver shows up for food...no $. My husband is now driving for our $40 dollars. They could have easily remedied it by apologizing, refunding or offering replacement. We will never order from a place that would rather keep the $40 than customers. Enjoy the mediocrity if you order from there...hopefully it's not rotten. read more

Today was the day the great news came out about Massago opening. My friend and I were so excited as we have been waiting for them to open since the fire. We ordered our meal at about 6:15 the website said it would take about 1-2 hours to arrive. After 2 hours we decided to call Massago with disappointment each time. After five times of calling and no response we gave up and ordered pizza. This was an extreme disappointment. 4 hours later (10:20) the delivery man came with our food. I'm not sure what the problem could've been, given that they had a record of my name and what I ordered. So I had to sit there for 20 minutes while they made my order. I have been eating here since this restaurant opened and have always loved the food... I always get sushi, and I always have it delivered and has always been great... About a month ago we got our normal order delivered and my wife and I both got sick from it over night. We called the restaurant the next day, just to let them know that we got sick, and just to warn them, so that no one else would get sick..... We know that this can sometimes happen, so we really were not looking for anything extra...but they didn't even care that we got sick, and didn't even apologize....we have always loved the food there so we still ordered another 3 or 4 times, and to tell the truth, the quality is just not there any more.....All the food just tastes like it is old or not a high quality..... We feel that we have given them more then a chance, and we will NEVER get food from there again!!!!!!! read more

This place is decent for cooked appetizers and rolls, but I wouldn't even try the sushi here. I saw someone else's plate of sashimi and sushi and I could tell right away that the fish pieces were sliced too thick and too big and they didn't look as fresh as they should be. They have extensive list of rolls of which are mostly too big and aren't bite sized. I would definitely come here for cooked kitchen appetizers and entrees, but I wouldn't eat the actual sushi here. The only thing good here was the price and it was still not worth it. Would rather make myself fried rice at home and call it a night. Sushi was not good at all. We also ordered Pad Thai that was awful -- nothing Thai about it and seemed more like bad Lo Mein. Overall impression is this is a Chinese restaurant in an ill fated attempt to be something more. Masago WAS my favorite restaurent. I ignored the slow/confused staff because the sushi was delicious and half-price. The Chinese entrees are mediocre. Recently Masago has been over-whelmed with customers because of its low prices... and their fish is now POOR quality. Maybe their chefs are too busy... but I have found bones not once but twice in my sushi. I gave it a second chance but I found another bone. I don't know about anyone else but when I find something in my food it is the biggest turn off. I will no longer sacrifice quality for price @ Masago. I have found many other better sushi restaurants in the area. read more

I decided to try this place, a new shiny Japanese place in a sea of of plenty of a great japanese places. Short review: this place is bad, go down the road to any place else. I went in with my mom for lunch. I could tell the minute I walked in no one there spoke english well. As a result it was a mess at the front. Once seated I noticed they didn't have a sashimi lunch special (why?). So that sucked. I got the two roll special with rolls I determined they couldn't mess up. I got clear soup with it that had two slivers of the tops of a mushroom and what tasted like water. The green tea was so watered down it was smokey water. No taste. My mom was warned about her dish being spicy. It was basically a fried noodle dish that had no spice or flavor. My rolls were just okay and the rice in them was slightly dry. When I got the check I put my credit card in forgetting it was cash only for lunch (a bit shady right). I was yelled by the waitress "CASH ONLY". Received the order 15 mins after speaking with them on the phone trying to understand why they don't have my order on file. Delivery guy comes back 3 hours after the food was delivered because they couldn't find my credit card information on file. Went to Masago on a Saturday night at 8 PM, we sat immediately. There was a good crowd there. The spicy tuna rolls I had were fresh and delicious but the soy sauce was totally lacking flavor... Was certainly "watered down" and the ginger had absolutely no ginger bite to it. Fresh fish goes a long way in my book, especially at a sushi joint, but I need the soy sauce/ginger/spicy tuna combo for me to truly enjoy it. Lastly, the ginger ale was not ginger ale. Huge pet peeve when you combine sweet sweet sprite and coke and call it ginger ale. So I don't know if I will necessarily be going back. But there must be something good if there were that many people in there on a Saturday night...... read more

I've been to this place many times. Overall the place is good! The sushi is decent most of time. My friend and I often split the masago sashimi special (assorted raw fish) and the american dream roll and or the spicy maki combo (spicy tuna, salmon, and yellowtail). I've tried many of the specialty maki rolls and some of them sound really good, but the majority weren't that tasty. As I said, the place is ok, I've had better sushi and I've had worse. The good news is, all the sushi is half price!! So it's really cheap! They now have their liquor license...which kinda sucks, b/c you used to be able to byob! This is one of the best sushi places around. Not only is the food great, but the cost is unbelievably affordable. All sushi is 50% off all the time and all kitchen items are 30% off. The masago sushi sandwich is one of a kind and is a roll to get if you are really hungry. Other great rolls are: hadeed roll, spicy girl roll, masago roll and out of control roll. Most uncomfortable experience ever. The waitress was extremely rude and nasty. She was constantly rolling her eyes at me and sighed when I asked for a refill. She started yelling things at me out of no where. I'm not sure if the lady was having a bad day or something but it totally ruined my dining experience. She was nice to every other table but mine. I would say this is a good place for a first date if your in the mood for sushi. Very romantic and sexy in they're with a great color scheme or red that makes the place really pop. They're sushi is very good and they have more of a menu with they're more singnature rolls. Good energy in there decent service. Very trendy and modernized with a touch of sexy. They're spicy tuna is fantastic as we'll as they Kani salad taste absolutely wonderful. Every place makes they're Kani salad different but the way they do it with just enough crab and cucumber mixed with a spicy mayo sauce is beyond perfection. I'm a big foodie and I know a good place from a bad either they are great or bad if it's bad I will voice my opinion but I have no complaints can't wait to go there everytime I crave sushi and I'm in oceanside. read more

Excellent sashimi..u can swap white for brown rice for ur sushi, it's the black rice imported from Japan I think, it's so good. I had the lobster roll with the mango slices in it. I got the chicken salad as an app, chicken was tender n the flavor was really good , asked for the dressing on the side(always opting for healthy & the dressing was creamy) I tasted the dressing with my fork, it was yummy. The Snow White roll was delicious . I had a few bites of one of the tuna appetizers off my bfs plate, fresh&tasty. I'm picky when it comes 2 Japanese sushi places. I will def be back ! read more

When I go for sushi/Asian fusion I always end up at Masago's. I have gone with friends, family and big groups of acquaintances. Their specialty rolls are outstanding! I also love their vegetable fried rice (which is very light and tasty). I have never once gotten sick after eating here nor do I personally know anyone who has gotten sick. Since opening they offer 50pc off sushi bar food and 30pc off kitchen food. Not sure what is eligible in menu for this. Food is fusion Asian. It's ok. Decor is nice and clean. We come here often. Once we arrived at 930pm (they close 1030pm on Friday evenings) and the soups were served lukewarm. The soft shell crab salad was ok with citrus flavored mayo but the claws were missing from the soft shell crab so really you get just a bit of crab and lots of lettuce. By 1015pm they started cleaning the place and asked us twice if we were finished (and we were not) so we gave up and asked them to pack up our food (house mei fun) and left. So don't go too late in the evening if you want a relaxing meal. read more
