I've never been to Masago -- have only gotten take-out delivery from them while at work for lunch. From the couple hundred times I've gotten sushi from them along with the occasional udon noodle stir-fry they're always fresh and tasty. They have a $6.99 lunch special menu that's filled with all kinds of "asian-fusion" goodies. Definitely a great place for lunch, without going broke! Can't beat 50% off all regular sushi rolls (excludes the speical double dragon godzilla type rolls :p) Only thing that stinks is that they charge $1 for spicy mayo! read more

I had high hopes. Very attractive menu with tons of options and reasonably well priced due to the 30% and 50% off they offer from kitchen and sushi items respectively. I've ordered take-out delivery now 4 times and each time something has been good and something not so much. Two times for lunch and twice for dinner. Today though was my final order. Though the sushi is decent it is not great. The cold noodles have been consistently good but the best item I've had is actually the salad dressing. Clearly not a signature dish. My big problem is the service. The first 2 times I ordered, the delivery took over an hour but at least the cold food was cold and the hot food was warm enough (some leeway here since I recognize it is delivery). Today and this past week were completely unacceptable. The sushi was fine but the delivery took over an hour and the hot food (gyoza, chicken teriyaki, chicken lettuce wraps, etc) was cold. It was as if the driver got 20 deliveries and I was last on the list. Absolutely COLD! Over $40 of food and all I got was sorry. So tonight when I ordered and asked how long the delivery would be after I placed the order and was told 45 minutes - long but ok at least my expectation was set appropriately, right??? Well... Not exactly. An hour passes, no food so I call and guess what - they tell me the food already left. Sure enough 10 minutes later, knock knock. So you know by now... I've been here several times and each time I've enjoyed my choices, HOWEVER, I've gotten sick after eating their food pretty consistently. Why as many as 3 stars? Bc I'm trying to convince myself that it wasn't possibly their sushi, but something else I may have eaten that day. Their prices are so reasonable that it's hard not to come back here as a cheap alternative to my favorite sushi, Nagahama in Long Beach. While the sushi is good, love their rolls wrapped in soy rather than seaweed, I would probably suggest skipping their house salad and their clear soup. The clear soup was very fishy tasting to me and the salad isn't my favorite. When it comes to ginger dressing, I prefer to have crisp lettuce: they serve theirs with a spring mix. Service was ok: not the best because our waitress really spoke very little english, which is fine, but it did make things more difficult when ordering. Ok so we come here regularly and have a lot of feelings about it. Some of the appetizers and hot dishes are not superb... Mainly their "fancier" ones like duck dishes and ribs. Their dumplings and soups and other appetizers are very good. I love the tuna sushi pizza. Age tofu was delicious as well. BUT we don't come here for that. We come here for consistent quality sushi that's so freakin cheap! Seriously at any other good sushi place if you wanna spend less than $7 on a roll all you can get is spicy tuna or a one fish/avocado roll. Rolls that you need soy sauce to eat. That's BS. I absolutely love Masago. Everyone is friendly. The sushi is fantastic. I haven't been able to sample all the choices, but each selection I've chosen so far is worth eating again. I did slow down my visits because they became so busy, I had to wait. Waiting is fine for me, but not my little one. They are worth the wait. I have been going to (and ordering from) Masago since it has opened! Half price fresh sushi all the time you can't beat that! I reached a point where I was having "sushi night" with friends weekly and we always ordered in from Masago. Well a couple months ago when we received our food I was starting to eat my avocado salad- mixing in the dressing- when I found a GLOVE in the salad! As in.. A rubber glove that someone ripped off their hand (it was all torn up) and hiding under my avocados. Totally disgusted we called them and they put up a fight saying they were sorry but they would only refund the amount of the salad (what is that? $3? I could have choked not to mention that it is unsanitary!) I have since found a new sushi restaurant. Just thought I would share this before anyone thinks about eating here read more

Lets keep this simple: The sushi is 50% off. NOW, It's reasonable to think that this really isn't a "deal" and rather, the sushi is of lower grade and therefore, the pricing is normal. A former sushi-skeptic, I picked the right place to take a risk and order only sushi for dinner! My boyfriend and I visited in early September 2011, and we were both (pleasantly) stunned when the BEAUTIFUL platter of sushi arrived. Together we ordered the Angry Dragon, Crazy Friday, and a Boston Roll to share. All were absolutely DELICIOUS, and due to the Grand Opening (50% Off) Special, our tab was just over $20! Although the rolls that we ordered consisted of a good deal of cooked seafood, I'm looking forward to going back to Masago to try something a bit more adventurous (i.e.; rolls with more "raw" ingredients). We haven't tried any of the hot dishes, but I can say that Masago does seem to take great pride in the presentation of their dishes, as we watched the people around us ordering all sorts of eye-catching things. We didn't have to wait for a table, but then again we seem to have arrived at just the right time, because as we left, the entrance was pretty crowded with parties waiting for tables. The only minor issue some may have with Masago (at least at the Oceanside location) is that when it gets busy, it gets a bit loud. Maybe hitting this spot during a peak meal-time might not be the best idea if you're really looking for an intimate dinner outing. Otherwise, I HIGHLY recommend giving this place a try-- especially if you can get there while the Grand Opening Special still applies (yes, there is some fine print regarding the 50% off discount). Used to be excellent. Had the duck salad which was just ok. Wife had the soup that we used to love, Tom Yum, but it tasted like citrus peel. The waiter came to see whether we wanted to order more and when we advised him of the problem, he explained that it is supposed to be sweet and sour. It tasted like it was just poorly made, and we really are not that picky. This is my first 1 star review. I won't go back. Don't want to get sick. read more

I enjoyed this restaurant. I'm not much of a sushi fan. I had the chicken teriyaki box which contained rice, sushi, shrimp shumai and chicken teriyaki. All was tasty and good. The inside is nothing special, I wouldn't make it a point to sit down for dinner, but overall I enjoyed our selections just didn't love them. Per-dollar, this is the best sushi you're going to find in driving distance. The sushi here is actually very good. The number one factor for a good sushi place is turnover; Masago does that well. Can you get better sushi? Yes. Can you get cheaper sushi? Yes. For both, this is the place. I've been to lots of sushi restaurants where you can pay twice as much and get half the quality (I'm looking at you, entirety-of-RVC). There's a ton of variety and the price makes trying things very easy, which is great. Favorites include the Masago Sashimi Special, Naruto roll, Osaka Box, American Dream. I have had the rare issue with quality, nowhere close to being an issue for me. They also can be a bit heavy-handed with the "crunch" (tempura flakes) in the spicy rolls, etc. They've always delivered within the timeframe given, but on busy nights this is sometimes around an hour - they don't take that long to deliver, instead the kitchen is overloaded. I usually try to pick up. The one time I did eat here it was fine; the restaurant is nicely decorated and comfortable, the service was adequate, it's fine for date-night, but not going to impress. This is the first place I think of when deciding what to order for dinner. read more

When I first started eating at Masago, I fell in love. I was a frequent customer until their sushi rolls started to get skimpy and started falling apart. It really depends on the time of day you go. This place was always my go to spot, and I feel like they started to go downhill. I've ate in the restaurant a few times, and never had an issue like the other reviews. Always fast service. Ugh, I tried this place again, this time for more of a goof with a couple of friends that crashed from the night before. We wanted sushi and a bunch of different stuff, you know, kind of just get a heap of foods and have a little of everything (sure, because none of you have been there after a night of boozing) and I mentioned Masago and said it's real cheap but kind of poo. My friends were feeling adventurous and got me feeling it too, we got ourselves amped for mediocre food. Now one thing I know for sure, when I'm hungover crap food can still be good, and some of this stuff was ok, but even in this state I was still disappointed and became angered. IF the cooks/owners of this place are actually from anywhere in Asia they must be laughing their way to the bank selling this junk and watching people say,"OOOH, this is delicous!!" Let me list: Shumai: steamed shrimp dumplings-definitely frozen, they were ok. Ika fried: Japanese Style Fried Calamari-I don't know about Japanese style, but I enjoyed this one. Thick, golden brown peppery breading says "American" to me, not Japanese, and the dipping sauce tasted like Bullseye or KC Masterpiece (not a sin as they are great smokey bbq sauces) mixed with vinegar. If I was forced to eat here again this would be something I'd order again, even though, again, the taste had nothing Asian about it. Honey Back Ribs: Okay, really? I didn't know it was possible to make ribs taste this bland. And I'm not exaggerating, it was literally as though they used some cooking method that extracts every bit of flavor from the ribs then they smother it in grease. Mmmmmmm. Yes, that "mmmmmm" was sarcasm. Just learned it last Tuesday. Moving on.... Miso Soup: Typical miso soup. If you have to eat here, order it. It's safe. Green Salad: I laughed. Green was right. It was just lettuce...until the end I found a piece of cucumber!!! The house ginger dressing was so-so, bottled, I'm sure of it. Kani Salad: If you're a big fan of kani salad like I am you can get by with this. I've had much better but I've also had much worse. Masago Sushi Sandwich: spicy tuna, spicy salmon, tempura flakes w. eel sauce, mango sauce, & bonito flakes. Sure, it sounds good but it was a gimmick roll, as it seems most of their rolls are. Just a big mound of mush that ends up not tasting like much. White Tuna Roll: We ordered 2 of them. One roll was pure white as should be, the other was a light beige. Interesting. Naturally the white one tasted better than the beige, which we ended up tossing, but even the good one was meh. White tuna, especially, should be crisp and clean, and this had slight salt and fish at the end. No bueno. That's espanolay for poor quality. Spicy rolls: Eh, not bad. The last time I had spicy rolls from here they just pat some spicy sauce on the sides. This time they actually did it right as it was mixed in. If you like spicy rolls and are forced to eat here you can do much worse than these. I'm not saying they're really good, but good enough to get by. Salmon Rolls: I had one piece and decided to not eat another. Nuff said. Eel and Avocado Roll: Eel definitely had to be cleaned better. I can't stand when you eat eel and you feel the crunchy spiny of the tiny bones. They shouldn't be there. It's not harmful it's just not enjoyable. Yellowtail Roll: Same as the others....quality is just poor. Shrimp Pad Thai: You have GOT to be kidding me. Absolute joke of a dish. The ONLY reason I ate this was to fill myself up otherwise I would have gone hungry. All it did was make me wish I had a shrimp lo mein from ANY chinese take out in the area. This is the last time I eat at this place. This is just another eatery in the long island area that is a pretender. They make it look all nice, use the word "fusion", throw a lot of fancy sounding ingredients on the menu (like mango sauce...pfft) and let food quality go right out the window. There's no pride in any of this food, they're literally feeding you slop. Bring this food to any of its respective nations and see how quick you're either laughed at or the food is tossed. This place is a playful gimmick at best. Closer to an insult than anything else. They have all those fancy rolls with all the bells and whistles to hide the quality of their crap fish and to constitute pretending to give you a deal off "high quality rolls with top notch" ingredients. Me and my boyfriend have wanted to try this place for a while. They advertise 30 percent off of most items on the menu because they just opened. We walked in and I immediately noticed how nice it was inside. I ordered the Rock Shrimp as an appetizer and we both ordered hibachi but noticed they did not have a grill or a chef that cooks it in front of you, it was done in the back. My boyfriend opted for a wonton soup instead of miso soup. We tasted it and the broth tasted sour. My miso good was ok, the salad was just like any other fusion place. Then the hibachi came. Tasted like teriyaki. Didn't have that wonderful taste from a grill. And had half the quantity of it. And NO FRIED RICE. Your hibachi comes with white rice. And no free refills! Everything looked fancy but it didn't taste good enough to match it's vanity. If you like food without substance then this is the place for you. I'd just recommend going to Jani's couple mins away. It's half the price at lunchtime with twice the food and a REAL guy who cooks the food in front of you. We will give a place another try when they get some sushi and Chinese food specials but just stay away from the overpriced kitchen hibachi. read more

Ordered for delivery last night for the first time. I thought for the price I paid the food was delicious and fresh and the driver arrived almost exactly when they said he would. Kani salad was on point and their sushi rice was super yummy. Spicy Kani roll and Boston roll were very very good and the California roll has just the right crab to avocado ratio. Couldn't order anything raw because I'm pregnant but I will def be ordering from here many more times in the future so im sure I'll try it all! This place will be getting my business! To answer your question Winnie, it was the first time ever. Another successful delivery last nite! Food was great and fast.
