Wow, I saw the place come alive like a well-oiled machine. The counter girls went into the back and started to package and prep meals. Entire orders were ready in minutes. I was amazed and impressed at their efficiency. My Kung pao chicken lunch was ready in 5 minutes. The portions of chicken were large and generous, full of complex, spicy flavors. I could still taste them, rich and satisfying. The chicken wings were just fantastic. I saw them coming out of the frier and added them on at the last minute they looked so good. Fresh, hot and crunchy. You could taste the marinade all through the meat. I made a hot killer dipping Duck Sauce by using their house, mustard and hot oil sauces combined. (For which I dearly paid for.. the following morning) I was both surprised and delighted by this little place. I frequent this place quite often now since I am now a local of Long Beach. My faves: Shrimp with garlic sauce or green beens: TONS of shrimp, less than $10. Sesame chicken: sweet and salt and YUM. Reminds of an orange chicken flavor minus the orange chicken, if ya know what I mean haha. Seafood soup: tons of different types of seafood, piping hot. Eggrolls: homemade, HOT, delicious. and huge. Pure, greasy, cheap, delicious NY style Chinese food. This has been my family's go-to Chinese place for at least 16 years; it's longevity is testament to it's absolute mastery of Chinese takeout. No matter how much food you order it'll always be ready in under 20 minutes. The egg rolls are so good, I've been known to buy 5 at a time and eat them throughout the week. As for meals, I love the Kung Pao chicken, Shrimp chow mein, and wonton soups. The pork chow fun is a winner as well. My only complaint would be the quality of the pork fried rice has gone down in recent years (there used to be onion, veg. and a lot of big chunks of that good sweet red pork...now you're lucky to get five chunks of pork in a pint) however, I'll chalk it up to nothing on earth being as good as it used to be. Somehow or another the people who take your order and speak very little English will always get your order right. They always accommodate my vegan requests (no pig sauce! no dead fish sauce!) I was surprised the food was as good as it was here. It's a run of the mill Chinese place in a strip mall. By far the best in long beach. I've been here several times and the food quality is largely reproducible. I was only let down once by a "on the dry side" lo mein. My boyfriend and I just moved to Long Beach last month. We've been going around and taking all kinds of take out menus, but when we left Waldbaums a few weeks ago, we decided to give this place a try because it was in the same shopping center. The food was gross. We are vegetarians and got something called "Vegetable Won Ton Soup" which was misleading because it was actually pork won tons in chicken broth with vegetables in the broth. I couldn't even eat my chow fun because it was hard and sticky. Every time we pass it now we call it "no one" (rather than No. 1)Chinese because no one would be crazy enough to eat there twice. read more
