We were seated right away for a Wednesday night for a table of 8, but they sat us right outside of the kitchen door where the workers were chopping away at vegetables that was truly disturbing. There was another table at the very right behind us that would have fit us, and that would have been better to not hear the constant chopping. And with only 3 tables of customers, we waited longer than we should to have our order taken. They had great service as our food came out and checked on us a few times. They do provide a small dish of salted peanuts upon seating and soft serve (1 per customer!). Our Cucumber Salad and Wor Wonton Soup came out quick. Their food is always good, so had to give at least 3 stars. And don't order using the numbers on their menu. Their POS (point of sale) system doesn't have the numbers to reference - lol! A quiet neighborhood restaurant that's been around for at least 20 years. And found out the owner also owns a few Poke House restaurants, so our water came to us in their plastic cups - ha! Our family loves Ma's! We have been coming here for years -- casual family lunch or dinners, celebrating birthdays, holidays, & so much more. The service is always quick & friendly & the food always tastes so good. Even better that the meat is halal. Our favorite dishes are the salt & pepper fish, Mongolian beef, hot & sour soup, combination fried rice, & honey walnut prawns. The honey walnut prawns are HUGE & we always have leftovers (which is surprising!) & the Mongolian beef is perfectly packed with onions & greens. I came here with some colleagues on a weekday and we ordered the beef and broccoli, prawns with walnuts, chicken with cashew nuts, calamari with hot pepper and salt, beef chow fun with bean sprouts, and mapo tofu. Great hole in the wall place that serves family style Northern Chinese cuisine. We tried 4 dishes and all of them were good-okayish. The hot and sour soup had chicken and chicken broth in it and it was really delicious. Not gluten free so keep that in mind. Definitely the best hot and sour soup I've had. I can see why this restaurant is my dad's go-to. We tend to appreciate the simpler dishes when it comes to authentic Chinese food, so the beef noodle soup is a no brainer for both of us. Our serving came with plenty of everything: beef, bok choy, noodles, and broth. I found myself chatting for an hour -- not only because I infrequently get to see my dad, but also because my bowl was so huge. The broth could have used a little flavor though. It's not my favorite beef noodle soup ever, but it makes up for that in quantity. One bowl costs about $18.50. We ordered: -Large assorted seafood warm pot ($29.95): This soup is filled with delicious seafood and vermicelli, and was such a generous portion. Even after we all drank several bowls, we still had quite a lot of leftover to eat the next day. If your group likes soup, you'll like this dish. -Prawns with walnuts ($22.95): The prawns were succulent. My friend, who dislikes seafood, ate two prawns, so you know it's definitely worth getting. -Sesame bread with green onion ($15.95): This was so filling that we didn't order any rice. I have come twice recently since the awful experience 10 years ago and am happy to report that their service has improved immensely. They have also done some interior remodeling and changed out their tableware and silverware for new ones. I didn't get to take photos of each dish, but am happy to say that all dishes were delicious and they even offer self served ice cream at the end of your meal. Service was a standout. I came here for dinner by myself completely forgetting this place is halal (I originally wanted sweet and sour pork lol). I decided to just get orange chicken to satisfy my craving because it's close enough. The orange chicken was sweet with a nice crunch. I liked that the dish also had little wanton crisps that helped counteract the sweetness of the sauce. The portion size is definitely for 2 people so the price isn't bad. The staff was kind and continuously checked up on me. I felt they were very efficient with attending to the guests and answering the phone (one guy mainly did it all). Had to try this place again after 16 years later. We walked in with a party of 3 on a Tuesday lunch time around 12:30pm. It was busy but we were able to be seated right away. I really wanted to like this place, but after multiple visits, it's a hard no for me. The food looks great, but the flavor relies way too heavily on MSG -- to the point where it's overwhelming. Every dish I tried left me feeling extremely thirsty, bloated, and uncomfortable afterward. Tried Ma's a few years ago and instantly, it became the new (for me) favorite Chinese Restaurant! I'm not sure how long it's been open but the first yelp review was 18 years ago, I'm sure it's been longer than that too! Kicking myself for not trying it sooner after a long search of trying different Chinese restaurants after one personal favorite has closed down a few years ago. Better late than never I guess! The one search has always been the Sizzling Rice Soup! This soup is so underrated and so satisfying but not every restaurant makes it and the ones that do are sometimes not that good... the veggies/toppings matters! There's been some interesting toppings/veggies that just didn't go well together. Thankfully Ma's Sizzling Rice Soup is good. Another one is San Tung's SRS if you're in the city. Beef chow fun - I love chow fun because I love thick noodles. flavor is good too! Sizzling beef - comes out hot and stays hot from the skillet. would recommend Chicken Fried Rice - how can you not get fried rice The chicken is very light but mix a little hot/chili sauce is a nice touch imo! Beef chow mein - thick chewy noodles = favorite ever. Chow mein and fried rice might sound basic for some but the go to for others but personally, it'll be to go to here. Fried Chicken Wing - it came with sweet and sour sauce on the side. Crispy but not much to it and can pass next time. It's located in a very busy plaza so if you come Friday-Sunday it can be a tad difficult to find parking. There is plenty of seating inside. What I do know is how Chinese food generally tastes, so I'm able to taste some uniqueness and differences in dishes. And the food at Ma's, I'm a fan of. The food is made well with authentic Chinese food flavors, but some dishes with a nice twist. It's tasty and satisfying and the best thing is that Ma's has options-a-plenty, which will always give you something satisfying to try. The service, it's fine. Nothing to boast about, but they are responsive and they will get to you. It's the classic service you'd expect from a Chinese restaurant, plenty of that disinterested face but they'll get to you. Lots of bad reviews here for the food. That wasn't my experience -- the food was delicious -- but I definitely need to echo the negative sentiments about the service here. Some of the worst I've had at any restaurant in a long time. Came here very soon after they opened on a Saturday evening. Our server was extremely cold and brusk, borderline annoyed that we were there, and gruffly showed us to a booth. As soon as we sat down, he started taking away the chopsticks and putting forks in front of us. My brother and I are Mexican and my husband is white, but all three of us can and do use chopsticks and were extremely confused by this (my brother and I were annoyed). While I've been asked a handful of times at other places over the years if I wanted/preferred a fork, I've never had the chopsticks taken away with the assumption I couldn't use them. I stopped the server and told him we didn't need forks; while he left them anyway, I used the chopsticks the entire meal out of principle. At one point my brother asked for a drink refill; a different server quite literally waved him away, annoyedly waving his hand in his direction as if he couldn't be bothered and claiming he'd tell our server. He never did and we had to flag our server down later for the refill. The only staff member who was somewhat nice was the waitress and that was only because she was charging us for the meal. Food was good. Got Mongolian beef, the sour lamb noodle soup, and a stir fried chicken and vegetable dish. My husband was a little disappointed by his soup, which is why we went there in the first place, mainly because he felt the flavors were monotonous and not very complex. I had no issue with my beef and we all thought it was the best dish of the night. The stir fried dish was great and the vegetables were fresh. But I have no desire to come back here anytime soon not just because it's pretty out of the way for me, but because I don't feel like getting treated like an annoyance nor dealing with rude, condescending wait staff who are only nice when they're taking our money. While on the subject of money, I also have to agree with others who had some sticker shock here; not all of the dishes are outrageously priced, but some definitely are. If you do come on a Saturday, bear in mind that this place fills up really fast and groups waiting to be seated quickly start forming outside. Try to get here closer to opening if you can. read more
