We have been waiting for our food for over an hour. They brought out California roll half an hour ago. It was fine. My tea took 30 mins to arrive. The order for our two main rolls was apparently "dropped" by the new sushi chef. I appreciate apology by guy at register and ultimate offer to refund. They did bring us an extra California Roll -- but I think they didn't realize they had already delivered the first one an hour before. Final: jalapeño roll never delivered. They brought us something else by mistake. Table next to us also had trouble with an order. Good help is hard to find, I understand, but an hour and a half after we arrived we still haven't gotten the full meal we ordered. They have apologized. We won't return. read more

This is a self serving restaurant. Place is small, decorated with toys and walls have cute graffiti. Service is fast and staff is friendly. I like the food I ordered, their tempura batter is so good! And I like the mushroom tempura, that's my first time having it. Their Miso Soup is really good, too! Next time, I'll try their curry ramen. I've read lots of other positive reviews, but Maru Plus disappointed me. It's this hybrid takeout/fast food/dine-in model that takes some of the relaxation out of dining out. I'm ok with informal dining and holes in the wall, but table-getting insecurity followed by having the order-taking line snake closely behind our table took the experience down a few notches. Food was decent: edamame and cucumber salad were great; veggie gyoza were decent; sushi is fresh and nicely presented. Nice that they can make Ramen vegetarian by replacing chicken broth with vegetable, and it was pretty good. Wine lovers beware: the day I was there, they had several beer choices, but only one wine -- a white (and they had to do a lot of digging to find it). I don't expect fine wine in a place like this, but was surprised. I see that the online menu says they offer "Chadonet" and "Cabanet", but not when I was there. Check first if this is something that matters to you. As a red wine person who doesn't drink beer, I opted for water. read more

Now this is poke I would recommend. I love how they have pictures of all dishes displayed on the menu on the wall. Makes ordering so much easier. They currently have a summer menu in addition to their regular one. Generous portion of variety of fish on top of very tasty ramen. Their seaweed salad is awesome. The fish does not have strong fish odor like in other poke places in town. The restaurant is small but very well designed and decorated. You order at the counter and then find yourself a table. Some of the chairs need updating, the leather is peeling. There is not much parking in front but there is a shared large parking lot in the back. Overall the experience was great and I want to go back and try some of their other dishes. read more

Okay I know I've already posted a review but that was the first time I was here. I've come here at least five times now and every time it has been amazing. They have yummy, authentic food, and while service is mostly hands-off, they always greet guests and thank them as they leave. The wait time is minimal for cooked meals, but stuff from the sushi bar takes longer. Not that I mind, since I usually have a delicious bowl of miso soup while I wait. The prices are average for the area (kinda high) but they have decently large servings so I always have leftovers. Did I mention the food is amazing? The restaurant is a bit loud during rush hour but usually there is calm Japanese music playing and when there are fewer people it is a lovely experience. My mom's go-to is the pork fried rice which is better than it sounds. The pork isn't that grisly stuff they have at American-Chinese restaurants; it is tender, if a bit fatty. I've been exploring more but everything I've tasted has been amazing. My favorite side is the takoyaki, which is dairy free! Not vegan because of the octopus, but I have a mild dairy allergy and they are super conscientious about it. All in all it's a nice restaurant and my go-to whenever I'm in Tucson. Definitely the place to go if you love Japanese cuisine like me. read more

The classic Tonkatsu ramen was very good. This was our first visit to this Maru location, and it being a Friday night, we had a bit of a hectic experience. The ramen came out after about 10 min of waiting, while the chicken katsu & curry made us wait about 15 more, with an appreciative arrival from the cashier/waitress thanking us for being so patient. The katsu itself was a little over-fried, but the curry and rice made up for it. The music inside was a little too loud for our liking, but nothing we can't deal with. It seemed as though the shop was short staffed for a weekend night, but the ladies that took care of us were doing a great job for just the two of them being front of house. read more

Maru Plus- formerly Yoshimatsu, is a-ok. Under the same ownership, Maru Plus focuses more on noodles and ramen and fun additions such as onigiri. We ordered takeout- pork katsu curry, pork chashu Don, gyoza, chicken karaage and a katsu pork bento box. Aside from the delivery taking longer than quoted, the food was fine. The curry had a mild spicy kick to it. I found the gyoza to be on the tough side. The karaage was good. I didn't love the Chashu pork, but I also didn't know what to expect. If you love pork belly, then you might enjoy this dish. It's a very tender almost buttery pork belly served over rice. I didn't like the texture but my friend liked it. So maybe it's personal preference. I might consider dining in next time to get the full experience. read more

Yoshimatsu is now Maru Plus. Same owner, same crew, and same amazing food. It's gone back to the old Yoshimatsu fast casual root to order in the counter and find your own seat. The menu is slimmed down too, focusing on noodles, rice dishes, and Onigiri, which is a big rice ball stuffed with different goodies. We ordered Bakudan that had an egg, beef, some pickles.Yummy! Noodles are the best here and now the restaurant has a topping bar to add your own green onions, seaweed, veggies, and sauces. We were there on a busy Saturday night, first weekend since the switch. The order line was long at times but everyone was working hard to make sure food went out. read more

This restaurant has a new name, same owner but same location. My husband and I we were not impressed by their food. Very mediocre. When we went there the place was pretty busy only two tables available, but the service was very quick. Maybe a bit too quick for sushi. I don't think that's a good thing. It's like the sushi was pre-made and then they just bring it to you 7 minutes later. Most people were having the soup/noodles not sushi and that looked pretty good and hot. I was only able to eat some of the edamame which were good and warm and only one piece of the California sushi roll out of all the food we ordered which it cost almost $40 and no drinks. Pretty expensive! Within minutes of leaving the restaurant, I was feeling sick. That night did not get any sleep because of the pain in my abdomen which I still had a day later. I'm not saying the food was unsafe since my husband had the rest of the food and he was feeling just fine, I think it's just my stomach that can't have sushi from this restaurant. I've had sushi many times in the past but never felt sick afterwards. So not sure what happened here.. I think it's best to just order food that needs to be cooked before they serve it like fried rice, soup, noodles, etc, but not the sushi if you have a "sensitive" stomach, to be safe. Just saying! The ambiance of the restaurant was simple just the menu on the wall. Very much like a fast food restaurant since you order the food at the register, pay, sit yourself and then they bring the food to you at the table. What a disappointment. Vegetable and shrimp tempura consisted of 4 carrot slices, 1 shrimp and 1 shrimp tail. I had to ask for dipping sauce and when questioned, they brought out another shrimp. Tempura was very crunchy and over fried. Gyoza dipping sauce had a very strange taste- spicy and just unappetizing. Ruined the dish. Something spicy was floating in sauce. No atmosphere. Maru Plus was written up in the paper as a good Japanese/noodle place so friend and I decided to give it a try. It's a small place, appears to be very clean and good lighting. Friend was already there with menus on the table, when I arrived. Udon, ramen, rice bowls, sushi, bento box, curry dishes, appetizers and onigiri are on the menu. Lots of options under every category. We ordered the Vegan Mushroom and & Veggie Tempura to start our meal. Friend ordered a pork rice bowl; I ordered the beef rice bowl. There is a small cart off to the side with little additions that one can add to their meal - sesame seeds, sliced jalapeños, tempura bits - lots of nice little choices. The Tempura arrived first. There were no mushrooms on our plate but what was on the plate was delicious. With some tempura, it gets a bit soggy when it cools off; this did not. There was a dipping sauce with it that was good, but a bit watery. Then the rice bowls arrived. My beef was almost shaved; very thinly sliced strips and was really good. Friend's pork was in 1 1/2" squares and was tough and chewy. Friend indicated the flavor was good, just tough. The gentlemen who took our order stopped by to see how the meal was going. We indicated that other than the tough pork, it was all good. He apologized for the meat and indicated he would let the chef know. All in all, a good meal. read more

Went here last night and really enjoyed it! Its a small place but adequate amount of tables and great use of space. There's a large menu on the wall, as well as individual menus near the checkout. You order your food then take your number to a table. The guy at the register was really friendly and hospitable. I couldn't decide what to order so he gave me some recommendations, and I got his favorite which was a win! My husband enjoyed his meal as well. There were Japanese snacks and desserts near the front, which of course I couldn't resist. Love that those are options to try! Lastly there's a a condiment bar that's pretty expansive if you ask me, with additions to add to your meal. It had jalapeños, bean sprouts, limes, corn, and so many other things. I was a little disappointed with my lunch here today. The food was okay... I only finished my onigiri, and I don't think I'd be coming here again. I ordered their December special: Mini volcano don with mini udon, a salmon onigri, and pork gyoza. My mom ordered the croquette curry and tempura shrimp. The volcano don was not very good, just felt like it was smothered in too much sauce, the gyoza had a burnt oil taste to it, and the salmon onigiri was fine (hard to really mess that one up). My mom liked her curry, but it was a little too spicy. She wished there was some way to change the spice level. She also thought the tempura shrimp was okay. You order at the cashier, and can pick your own toppings. I liked the pictures on the walls, but the furniture was a little old and the chairs looked like they were falling apart a little. read more

Honestly, I wanted to like this place but I'm kinda mad I even spent money here. The service was okay, but the food. The curry came out cold, and didn't even look like the right coloring. The sukiyaki meat tasted super weird and was just so salty. The ramen literally tasted like something you'd buy at the store for a dollar. We had to ask for hot water too just to dilute how salty the broth was. And not to mention the salmon bowl was just... off. The fish tasted weird and I couldn't even finish it. I've gone back a few times since my last review despite originally being disappointed. I think I must have gone during a bad shift or more training has taken place as the food has gotten better. Also, I think I was incorrectly charged or prices have been adjusted as the poke bowls are $18 (I was charged $22 during my original review). Love this place! Been going here since it was Yoshimatsu. Allot has changed? You walk in and order at the front now instead of a traditional server taking your order. Honestly don't mind, very self serve friendly! Sushi is wonderful and tastes very fresh. Staff is very nice and ambiance is cute and allot of artwork. My only complaint is the miso soup. Instead of just tofu there is this spongy bread they've added to it and I do not like at all. Rather it be just classic miso soup with tofu. If it ain't broke why fix it type of thing. Just my opinion but the texture really throws me off and is not for me. Otherwise the sushi is some of my favorite in Tucson! read more

We ordered a few different ramen dishes, and a couple sushi combos. The service was friendly and the food came out pretty quickly. The ramen broth was flavorful and the noodles were done well. The sushi was decent but the ramen is the star at this place. Overall we were happy to find a place to eat that was open and pretty tasty. I have gone to this restaurant, formerly Yoshimatsu, for about as long as I have been in Tucson as a college student. The former was my absolute favorite restaurant for Japanese food, backed by my half Japanese mom's comment on their authenticity. As Maru Plus, the style changed, and the food has remained the same if not even better- with an addition of self-service for additional options, and seemingly much faster service. You can buy Japanese snacks at the front along with the typical drinks and desserts. The painted walls and authentic plastic food models I remember when I went to Japan in 2015 make me feel like this place is closer to the culture than other places. The star here is the ramen- but they have a good selection of foods overall. This will likely be my go-to for Japanese food in Tucson! read more

The owner of Yoshimatsu decided to rebrand her restaurant and open this new "concept" one in its place. I guess the concept is to have lousy service and bad food that takes a long time to make. The chicken in the bento box was disgusting. It took 40 minutes to get a onigiri and when it arrived, it was more rice than anything and just a sliver of protein in the middle, not worth the 6 bucks it cost. I used to really like the ramen from Yoshimatsu but the quality and flavor had been going downhill even before the name change. Well, it has only gotten worse which is sad because it is really expensive, 16$ for some noodles that they probably bought at Food City for 50 cents a package. read more
