Maru coffee, the Los Feliz location, is located on hillhurst and the first original at that. In case you were wondering the name in Korean means Mountaintop. During the week, lines can even get long, but the lines move rather quickly. I like the minimalist aesthetic; small inside area for bench seating and perhaps a small wait time for a table to open up. Shh, I'm not a coffee drinker so instead I ordered a matcha latte. At home I usually drink it straight (meticulously whisking the green powder) or as a latte with alterative milk. Nevertheless, I slowed my day down on purpose to enjoy my beverage. The latte served here was delicious. The flavor is generational. It was earthy, smooth, and rich. Matcha is a different take on tea and I feel a great alternative to coffee. I only consume a few times a week for the benefits of green tea (everything in moderation) and never after consuming an iron-rich meal. Street parking only available and I typically find parking right away. Opening hours vary between 7am and 8am, and they close at 5pm on most days. I've been so excited to try Maru, and it definitely didn't disappoint! There was a long line but it moved quickly, so don't be discouraged. The shop itself is quite aesthetic with minimal seating and a bit of merch available. Definitely more of a grab and go situation on a busy weekend! The matcha latte was so rich and creamy, and not too sweet! I actually prefer my drinks sweeter so I requested extra simple syrup which was no charge, and it was the perfect light sweetness I was looking for. Loooong Lines! The wait time for the drinks is crazy but the baristas inside are fantastic at their craft and still paid a lot of attention to their drinks. I got the famous cream top and I enjoyed it. It was perfect and the coffee below was fantastic as well. It was a very smooth long black and the espresso was just well rounded and tasty. Good prices all around and a cool shop on the inside. Came here on a Friday afternoon with a friend from out of town before exploring Los Feliz. There is metered street parking right by Maru but we drove a block down and parking outside the library on the street for free. Although it was around 2 pm, there was still a line and a ~7 minute wait time. There are a few benches to sit at outside and limited indoor seating so this is very much a to-go style coffee shop. My friend is super allergic to lactose and they were very good about understanding this and sanitizing all equipment for her drinks (she did not have any reaction). Iced matcha latte 3/5, not super great but not super bad, just middle of the road matcha. Visiting from Out of town, found this gem. Excellent cappuccino, right temperature, properly pulled shot, beautiful latte art, finish tasty and smooth. The staff was friendly and outstanding, Kendra dark hair , took our order was so sweet, working hard and help make our Capps, running everywhere. We got the almond crescent lots of nuts but surprised it was full of a fruit jam, and not almond paste. It was really good just a little bit on sweeter side. The pastry was fresh, crisp and delicious. We almost left when we saw line Saturday morning, but There is a line for a reason but they were really quick we even returned Sunday the next day but Kendra wasn't there. We used to live in Los Feliz and spent years walking this part of Hillhurst multiple times a week. The street has changed, a lot of the businesses turned over, but it's as charming and vibrant as ever. Maru Coffee is one of the new businesses, though I guess it's been open for ten years now--it moved in like a month after we moved out. One more sign that we're getting old. But we are still hip enough to join the crowd at Maru after a morning hike in Griffith Park. The place was busy when we arrived on a Friday around noon, lots of people lining up to get their artisanal coffees. The wait was short, though, and service was friendly and quick. The shop was attractive, soothingly minimal in a KonMari kind of way. We found a place to sit while we waited for our drinks. I'm not a habitual coffee drinker, so while Matt B. got his coffee, I enjoyed an iced matcha latte. This was delicious, creamy and flavorful and also bright green. I really want to love this place but it keeps falling short for some reason. I have tried most of their drinks over the last couple of visits. Their classic vanilla latte is wonderful and perfectly done. However, their matcha just doesn't do it for me. We asked for cold foam on the iced matcha and were told they don't do that here. The 8oz Iced Breve Macchiato caught my eye which admittedly I didn't see anyone mention in reviews or photos. But wow, did I make a great decision. The espresso was extracted perfectly with clean taste and balanced body. What really blew me away with their signature half + half. It was smooth, creamy, and layered perfectly over the espresso. This drink needs a good mix so that rich cream incorporate with the espresso. Every sip was velvety, silky, and refined. I did not expect to like this so much but it was everything & more! My only critique would be that this should be offered in other sizes (8oz is just too small!). I also love the modern & minimalistic Japanese aesthetic. New coffee shop by work yay! I always pass by and notice the line is long. I'm excited to finally try this new coffee shop. This place is pretty small there's seat inside with small table and 4-6 seats outside. It's not really meant for big groups to hang out, but perfect for grabbing a quick coffee. The coffee itself is excellent. I love trying new spots, and this one is amazing; the coffee isn't bitter, it's just right. Espresso machine was broken, so we didn't get to try the drinks we wanted :( I ordered the matcha latte with oat milk because i've seen so many great reviews but I was so disappointed. The matcha is pre-batched in a big bowl and they scoop it with a ladle into your cup. I have nothing against pre-batched matcha, especially since lots of great cafes do so as well and just cold shock it to prevent oxidation. However, this matcha was just a miss for me. Flavor wasn't as rich and nutty as I prefer. I think ktown cafes will always be my go-to for matcha. However, I would still come for espresso based drinks since I've had them at the beverly hills location and enjoyed those. Would've given one star for the matcha but the second star is because my parents enjoyed their drip and pour over. There was a line but moved pretty quickly. Maru is one of the original hip coffee shops in Los Feliz / Silverlake area and tbh not much has changed since then (we've been coming here for 11-12 years). The drinks are pretty good (even though they stop selling the cream top on the side) and the matcha is pretty decent. The kids will call it "mid" since it doesn't have the cream top but I have to disagree, the matcha itself is high quality. The service is always pretty good and all the staff have always been very friendly. The only thing I would like to comment is I wish the have an oven to warm up the croissants. Cute little coffee shop walking distance from where I worked this weekend. I got there at about 6:50am on a Saturday and a line already started forming before they even opened. I wanted a vanilla latte with a cream top but I was told you can't get the cream any longer but the staff was nice to offer that I can get a side of simple syrup on a regular cream top coffee. The cream was delicious! I do like my coffee on the sweater and creamier side so I'm glad I got the simple syrup. The coffee is very strong, but I needed something to wake me up so it's perfect. I've heard good things about the matcha at Maru Coffee; I'd previously tried Maru Espresso Bar across town, but unfortunately, the espresso bar didn't serve matcha. That said, I knew I had to give the matcha a go while in the area. There was a decent line when I rocked up around 10AM on a weekday, but it moved relatively fast. Service was really nice and friendly as I ordered a matcha latte with cream top. The matcha latte itself was $7.00, but the cream top added an extra $3.00-- I found charging cream top on the side quite excessive, especially for $3.00! Taste-wise, it was really good: the matcha really came through with each sip, and the cream top was thick, luscious, and added a delicious sweetness to it. It's a solid matcha einspänner, but it was expensive. Honestly, I just think Maru should just add a matcha cream top to the menu, instead of charging extra for the cream top. Good experience, but unless I'm back in the area, I will go to other cafés for matcha einspänners at a more-decent price. read more

Mostly lives up to the hype and high praise. I've been to the BH mini location many times but I'm more of a matcha person so I was excited to check it out here as they don't offer matcha. The line is not too ridiculous early during the weekdays & it does move fast. Lots of friendly people and their dogs waiting patiently in line. Even the cashier had a great attitude given the chaos inside the cafe. I always recommend their signature vanilla latte but we also got the bon bon drink and it was lovely. The matcha latte was delicious (which I got a side of cream with to place on top) but it's not the "best I've ever had". I would absolutely order it again if in the area. From what I gather this coffee shop is known for their matcha, however I did order an iced latte. I do wish I was in the mood for matcha that day. Decor is minimal with an earthy touch. For it being a small space, it does have a bit of seating available although it is quite crowded. Not as much table top space as other coffee shops. This place is located on a busy street and finding parking was quite hard. I recommended parking on a neighborhood street and just walking there or actually even better there is an Albertsons parking lot less than a 4 min walk away. No Longer offer Cream Top for Matcha! Even if you ask, they no longer offer the cream top in the cup or on the side. Very disappointing since it's the sole reason I made the drive to see the hype. The Matcha Latte itself does not hold up next to other Cafes like Stagger, Memory Look, Rok Cafe, Danbi, Olive and James and Damo.
