came on a sunday afternoon. the interior is very small yet aesthetic and the line moved very quickly with a short wait. i ordered the iced matcha latte and my parents ordered an iced americano and an iced cream top. the matcha is very fresh and strong, but i needed to ask for a side of syrup because of how bitter it was and that helped. my favorite matcha is still from ayer-- the maru coffee one was just too bitter for my taste. my parents absolutely loved their coffee tho which is why i made my rating so high lol. my mom rated the iced cream top 9/10, my dad rated the iced americano 9.5/10, and i give the iced matcha 6/10. in all fairness tho my parents don't like sweet things while i do!!
Maru coffee, the Los Feliz location, is located on hillhurst and the first original at that. In case you were wondering the name in Korean means Mountaintop. During the week, lines can even get long, but the lines move rather quickly. I like the minimalist aesthetic; small inside area for bench seating and perhaps a small wait time for a table to open up. Shh, I'm not a coffee drinker so instead I ordered a matcha latte. At home I usually drink it straight (meticulously whisking the green powder) or as a latte with alterative milk. Nevertheless, I slowed my day down on purpose to enjoy my beverage. The latte served here was delicious. The flavor is generational. It was earthy, smooth, and rich. Matcha is a different take on tea and I feel a great alternative to coffee. I only consume a few times a week for the benefits of green tea (everything in moderation) and never after consuming an iron-rich meal. Street parking only available and I typically find parking right away. Opening hours vary between 7am and 8am, and they close at 5pm on most days. I've been so excited to try Maru, and it definitely didn't disappoint! There was a long line but it moved quickly, so don't be discouraged. The shop itself is quite aesthetic with minimal seating and a bit of merch available. Definitely more of a grab and go situation on a busy weekend! The matcha latte was so rich and creamy, and not too sweet! I actually prefer my drinks sweeter so I requested extra simple syrup which was no charge, and it was the perfect light sweetness I was looking for. I also tried the Cascara lemonade and espresso tonic, both of which were refreshing and acidic - I would order both again! I hope to come back to Maru again and again!
I came in around closing time, and while they were efficient, the service felt a little rude. They were talking amongst themselves and didn't acknowledge me right away. Other than that, the coffee was delicious!
If you can't decide what to get or if it's your first time, get the Vanilla bean latte. Love that they use real vanilla bean for this drink. Matcha is good but nothing spectacular. Also sad they took away the cream top :(
Loooong Lines! The wait time for the drinks is crazy but the baristas inside are fantastic at their craft and still paid a lot of attention to their drinks. I got the famous cream top and I enjoyed it. It was perfect and the coffee below was fantastic as well. It was a very smooth long black and the espresso was just well rounded and tasty. Good prices all around and a cool shop on the inside. I wish I had time to sit down and really try their menu/pour over/etc to truly say how well rounded they are but their signature didn't fall short.
Amazing coffee! Loved the macchiato and the creamy foam with it. The matcha donut was delicious. Service was pretty friendly, line moved quickly despite there being many people in there. It's a simple set up, but don't let that fool you. The coffee quality is excellent.
Came here on a Friday afternoon with a friend from out of town before exploring Los Feliz. There is metered street parking right by Maru but we drove a block down and parking outside the library on the street for free. Although it was around 2 pm, there was still a line and a ~7 minute wait time. There are a few benches to sit at outside and limited indoor seating so this is very much a to-go style coffee shop. My friend is super allergic to lactose and they were very good about understanding this and sanitizing all equipment for her drinks (she did not have any reaction). Iced matcha latte 3/5, not super great but not super bad, just middle of the road matcha. I spoke with the friend who recommended me this spot and she noted that they got rid of the cream top which made it fantastic so it's possible this is why I didn't end up loving this latte ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Visiting from Out of town, found this gem. Excellent cappuccino, right temperature, properly pulled shot, beautiful latte art, finish tasty and smooth. The staff was friendly and outstanding, Kendra dark hair , took our order was so sweet, working hard and help make our Capps, running everywhere. We got the almond crescent lots of nuts but surprised it was full of a fruit jam, and not almond paste. It was really good just a little bit on sweeter side. The pastry was fresh, crisp and delicious. We almost left when we saw line Saturday morning, but There is a line for a reason but they were really quick we even returned Sunday the next day but Kendra wasn't there. They have inside bench table seating and have put benches outside to accommodate the crowd. Great coffee community loved the vibe, can't wait to revisit. Bravo Kendra...
Maru is easily one of my favorite coffee shops. Their iced breve macchiato is my absolute favorite drink--I love it so much that I started buying their beans and making it at home since I don't live close enough to come all the time. The coffee is consistently amazing, and you can really taste the quality of the beans. I still make a point to stop by whenever I'm in the area. Service is fast and friendly as well.
Ordered: 8oz Iced Breve Macchiato (~$6): double espresso with signature half + half; from Maru Espresso Bar (M.E.B.) Signature Menu Aya's take: Maru has gotten rave reviews for having some of the best coffee & matcha in LA, and I wanted to see what the hype was about. The 8oz Iced Breve Macchiato caught my eye which admittedly I didn't see anyone mention in reviews or photos. But wow, did I make a great decision. The espresso was extracted perfectly with clean taste and balanced body. What really blew me away with their signature half + half. It was smooth, creamy, and layered perfectly over the espresso. This drink needs a good mix so that rich cream incorporate with the espresso. Every sip was velvety, silky, and refined. I did not expect to like this so much but it was everything & more! My only critique would be that this should be offered in other sizes (8oz is just too small!). I also love the modern & minimalistic Japanese aesthetic. I'm glad they have a location in NY now; hope the quality is up to par!

The place is extremely small compared to their Arts District location, so seating is pretty limited. Street parking only, and it can definitely be a challenge since this area is always busy. Servers were decent and the drinks came out pretty quick.

Service was friendly and nice, and quick! We got matcha lattes and they were pretty good but I think there might have better options for matcha there! Also it's kind of tough because I might be a bit too comparative to some of the other matcha spots we've been at. I think I was told also that their coffee options are better too! Next time we'll try those! May have to find street parking!

Coffee was great; matcha latte was pretty earthy, not over-crept by the oat milk I chose, and not too sweet either. It doesn't have any distinct profiles I can speak too, but is a good standard nonetheless. As for parking, you'll most likely find yourselves walking in front a nearby neighborhood, but if I recall correctly, there is also limited street parking in front and around their storefront. read more
I recently upgraded my interest in coffee and have been keen on trying various coffee shops. Maru Coffee was highly recommended to me by a local friend, and when I finally tried it, I immediately understood why. The shop offers minimal seating in a clean, wooden interior. I love the aesthetic as it enhanced the concept of the simple menu. My friend and I both ordered iced oat lattes with different blends. Her drink (not pictured) was the Santo blend, a darker roast with minimal acidity and dark chocolate-y notes. Mine was the Kemi, a medium roast with deep but light fruity flavours, which I loved. Both blends were phenomenal, especially for those who don't like acidity in their coffee. Despite the line out the door, service was efficient and prompt. I would definitely return to have this delicious cup of coffee again. read more

Came on a rainy day in LA and it was still busy! Busy but the wait time was quite reasonable! This cafe is a bit small, but there is enough seating for groups, individually and is dog friendly! The Bon Bon perked me right up, esp on a gloomy day! The taste of the coffee was really good! I would definitely come back here to get my coffee fix! read more

The space is so beautiful! Limited seating inside but if you are able to stay for a moment, I'd recommend it because it's such a beautifully designed environment. I got a matcha latte half sweet, and it was fine. Nothing noteworthy so I wouldn't go out of my way to come back but if I happened to be in the area and were craving a matcha, I would return. The matcha is pre-batched so it's not whisked to order. Service was fine. read more

Espresso machine was broken, so we didn't get to try the drinks we wanted :( I ordered the matcha latte with oat milk because i've seen so many great reviews but I was so disappointed. The matcha is pre-batched in a big bowl and they scoop it with a ladle into your cup. I have nothing against pre-batched matcha, especially since lots of great cafes do so as well and just cold shock it to prevent oxidation. However, this matcha was just a miss for me. Flavor wasn't as rich and nutty as I prefer. I think ktown cafes will always be my go-to for matcha. However, I would still come for espresso based drinks since I've had them at the beverly hills location and enjoyed those. Would've given one star for the matcha but the second star is because my parents enjoyed their drip and pour over. There was a line but moved pretty quickly. Service is great and the baristas are very kind. read more

I really want to love this place but it keeps falling short for some reason. I have tried most of their drinks over the last couple of visits. Their classic vanilla latte is wonderful and perfectly done. However, their matcha just doesn't do it for me. We asked for cold foam on the iced matcha and were told they don't do that here. This was odd as I've seen posts with cold foam on matcha before from Maru. Prepare for a long line and the inside space is tiny. read more

I love their matcha here! Not too sweet and so delicious. My husband has enjoyed their pour overs. Usually a consistent line out the door on the weekends. But it moves pretty quickly. Totally recommend! read more

Maru coffee is so so good. There's always such a long line but it's always worth it. It's a super small coffee shop and you'd miss it if you blink, not much seating so I usually take my drinks to go. I stop by when I'm in the area, particularly when I'm going to eat at Home! Their cream top iced latte is my favorite! I wish there was a way to place orders online to bypass the line! read more

Cute little coffee shop walking distance from where I worked this weekend. I got there at about 6:50am on a Saturday and a line already started forming before they even opened. I wanted a vanilla latte with a cream top but I was told you can't get the cream any longer but the staff was nice to offer that I can get a side of simple syrup on a regular cream top coffee. The cream was delicious! I do like my coffee on the sweater and creamier side so I'm glad I got the simple syrup. The coffee is very strong, but I needed something to wake me up so it's perfect. I also got the matcha donut. Next time I will try their matcha drinks! read more

Maru is one of the original hip coffee shops in Los Feliz / Silverlake area and tbh not much has changed since then (we've been coming here for 11-12 years). The drinks are pretty good (even though they stop selling the cream top on the side) and the matcha is pretty decent. The kids will call it "mid" since it doesn't have the cream top but I have to disagree, the matcha itself is high quality. The service is always pretty good and all the staff have always been very friendly. The only thing I would like to comment is I wish the have an oven to warm up the croissants. Overall it's still a 5 out of 5. read more
Creamtop drink... i like this one a lot and would return for it. I like that it's a long black rather than a cold brew. TIL what a long black is lol. Iced matcha latte - i've noticed people either love it or hate it. It's very lightly sweetened which i suppose is so more earthiness comes thru, and is very thin/ kind of watery Anyways ill come back for coffee but not for matcha. I stopped by on a Saturday afternoon, which was perfect because the morning rush was over and there were fewer people. The line wasn't too long and it moved quickly. I ordered the iced matcha latte and it was so good!! It comes with agave and had the perfect balance of earthy and a hint of sweetness. The space is small and the ambiance is chill, people were hanging out with friends and their dogs. I found parking in the residential area and walked over. They also sell pastries! read more

Coming back for the delicious iced vanilla bean latte. It's the perfect flavor combo with the vanilla bean (nothing artificial!) and still pronounced coffee flavor. The inside is very minimal but has a calm and woodsy vibe to it. It's fairly small and the seats/tables are very close to each other. I would say its more of a grab and go spot or a quick catch up with friend. Staff were very friendly! read more
Writing my review as I sip my delicious iced vanilla bean latte. It's the perfect amount of sweetness with the ability to still enjoy the coffee flavor. In terms of the coffee it's 5/5! Was nearby so wanted to give this place a try. I walked there so unsure about parking. The inside is fairly small and the seats/tables are very close to each other. Everything is also wooden( no cushions) so if that's not your vibe I wouldn't plan on a long stop, maybe a grab and go might be more for you. Staff were very friendly the place was full on a Tuesday afternoon. I also overheard the barista mention they don't have sweetener and it seems they use agave just a heads up! read more

I've heard good things about the matcha at Maru Coffee; I'd previously tried Maru Espresso Bar across town, but unfortunately, the espresso bar didn't serve matcha. That said, I knew I had to give the matcha a go while in the area. There was a decent line when I rocked up around 10AM on a weekday, but it moved relatively fast. Service was really nice and friendly as I ordered a matcha latte with cream top. The matcha latte itself was $7.00, but the cream top added an extra $3.00-- I found charging cream top on the side quite excessive, especially for $3.00! Taste-wise, it was really good: the matcha really came through with each sip, and the cream top was thick, luscious, and added a delicious sweetness to it. It's a solid matcha einspänner, but it was expensive. Honestly, I just think Maru should just add a matcha cream top to the menu, instead of charging extra for the cream top. Good experience, but unless I'm back in the area, I will go to other cafés for matcha einspänners at a more-decent price. read more

They get them from a local baker and they are delicious!
Do they still have a full drink menu near closing?
In my experience, yes. They are still super friendly and ready and willing to do full service near close. With that said - out of respect - I keep my order super quick and simple if I come in 15 minutes to close.
