ondo is a lively, down-to-earth cafe that serves a solid menu of caffeinated drinks, from americanos to matcha/hojicha lattes. i ordered the saigon de leche, which is their take on the spanish latte. it contained double espresso, sweetened condensed milk, organic saigon cinnamon, and oat milk (as a milk substitute for an additional $1). it was delicious and not too sweet! receiving my order and finding seating was very quick when i visited on friday in the late afternoon. if you need to work with an outlet, note down the wifi information at the order counter, make your way up to the loft, and take a seat in one of the blue barstools. notice the legs of the barstools are protected by socks shaped like cat paws for a quick laugh. i LOVE that ondo shows real personality rather than a copy-paste of a highly curated pinterest board. an episode of scooby doo cartoon is projected onto the wall behind the counter. a print of a soey milk paintings hangs in the gender-neutral restroom on the ground floor. aesthetically, the 2nd floor is a bit of a departure from the 1st floor. midcentury modern furniture, eclectic magazines, art books, literal coffee books, and CDs from early 2000s that seem to come from someone's personal collection are on display. if you appreciate good coffee, good energy from friendly baristas who like to occassionally sing along to the music playing, and eclectic artwork you would commonly find at gallery nucleus, definitely give this cafe a visit! metered parking is suuuuuper easy. read more

For drinks, I got their signature Guinness Butterscotch Cream Latte and it was delicious! I loved the butterscotch cream top. The espresso was nicely strong and mixed with the cream, it was yummy. It was at a good size for $7.50 which was better compared to nearby coffee shops who had smaller portions at higher prices. Parking is street parking. Service was great and the baristas seemed nice. Stopped in for a cortado and thought it was decent overall, but not quite where I expected it to be. The drink looked decent and the texture held up. The crema and foam stayed intact throughout the drink. For context, I do drink bright coffees regularly and generally prefer light roasts and washed beans, so I'm usually pretty comfortable with higher-acidity profiles. That said, the crema had a slightly dry, matte appearance rather than the glossy, silky look I usually associate with a really well-executed cortado. Flavor-wise, it had more of a sour taste. I don't mind bright coffees, but this one tasted a bit sour, and I wasn't entirely sure whether it was an intentional characteristic of the coffee or a sign that it needed more balance. It could have used a little more sweetness to round everything out. The body was solid, but the flavor never really came together for me. My biggest issue was that nobody behind the bar could tell me what beans were being served for my cortado or provide any tasting notes. At a specialty coffee shop, I'd expect at least some basic information about the coffee, especially when customers are trying to learn more about what they're drinking. However the girl at the register was very nice. Not a bad drink overall but I did expect more. read more

Writing this review 2 weeks late after my visit and I still would strongly recommend this coffee shop for coffee enthusiasts! It has a great pour overs with frequent rotation of new beans to try. I can't quite remember the name of the one I had but it was amazing. I love coffee with a distinct unique identity and it gave me exactly what I was looking for. I wish I could give a more thorough description of the cup for my hardcore coffee enthusiasts out there but I'm still learning my tasting notes, so you'll just have to trust me on this one. I had my drink in their dine in cups which included a pretty looking server with a matching tasting cup so you can slowly pour and enjoy your coffee. The shop is a little small with the main area feeling a little cramped but there's a small upper level with some more seating. The vibes felt chill and inviting with many people getting work done while enjoying their drinks. My sister who I was with ordered the Guinness Butterscotch Cream Latte but it didn't really suit our tastes. However, it doesn't make this place less worth visiting. I've been following the owner since his cold brew days and was excited to finally visit his brick and mortar store but I was left very underwhelmed. We went to go pick up a bag of the weekenders coffee and we were having a hard time picking out which bags belonged to the brand and when we asked if they could point it out to us, the lady at the register was so rude and just said whatever they had was out. Another worker had to step in to help us identify the correct bag for the coffee we were seeking. Kudos to him for helping though. Also the prices are crazy for drinks. $7.50+ for a tiny drink. Used to come to pick up almost every other day before moving west... they were super consistent with their drinks but I think customer service goes a long way. Almost everyone I had an interaction with except for the tall dude with curly-ish hair, was careless. No smile, no "ur welcome" or "have a good one" l'd say morning just to feel like I said it to a brick wall and have to follow it up with my order and no response LOL. Mind you, I'd say thank you and tip a dollar every time! It had me thinking maybe the scene has changed. But places like mad lab and palm grove social which I frequent, give the bare minimum with just good coffee and I'd rather go there just because I feel welcomed. In fact, the only time I was ever greeted was when I was out of my work attire, and into what I normally wore, band tee and some jeans. Only then was I offered a physical rewards card! So gnarly to pull out so late after I'd been supporting this establishment for over a year seeing the same baristas. But yeah. I didn't feel any type of way until this interaction. I thought maybe they're like this because the focus is and should be coffee. Which I get.. but at that point just be a pick up window with an ordering screen. PEACH ROYALE (SEASONAL) (Organic black peach tea, cane sugar, organic oat milk, cold steeped for 18 hours) Mellowed black tea with that fruity peach flavor. The oat milk brings that extra creaminess and with fruity black peach tea. Surprisingly delicious! I do not like oat milk, but since it was steeped with the black peach tea, I could not substitute it. GUINNESS BUTTERSCOTCH CREAM LATTE (House-made Guinness butterscotch, sweetened milk base, espresso, whipped cream top) Surprisingly good flavors! At first sip it tasted like tiramisu. But as I mixed it, I can taste the Guinness with the coffee. It tasted like that buttery caramel toffee flavor. It tasted complex. There was some textures in the cream like chocolate specks. Everything was creamy and it felt like a good dessert drink. CHAMOE SPARKLER (House made Korean golden melon cheong and sparkling water) It did taste like the Korean melon. You do get small bits of the Korean melon throughout the drink. It was much sweeter than desired. Korean melon is usually mild in sweetness. The tonic did bring that extra bubbly mouthfeel with each sip. Personally, I did not love this drink nor was it unique. Very one note. AMBIANCE / SEATS Strangely, the pictures came out too nicely on Yelp and on Google reviews. In person, everything looked old and grungy. Also, muuuuch smaller than what I've seen in pictures. There are tables and seats indoors and outdoors, but still it's not a place you can comfortably sit with your laptop and study or work. CUSTOMER SERVICE Not super friendly nor welcoming, but no attitude. They just did their job and that's it. PARKING Metered street parking only. Luckily, I parked right across Ondo, so I didn't mind. We don't live in the area but I found Ondo Coffee after looking for a coffee shop not far from Griffith Park. They normally have an upstairs seating area but it was closed at the time we visited. A cozy neighborhood coffee spot in Virgil Village with plenty of nearby street parking. I like coming here to do light work or read. It's not a huge space, but there are plenty of seats inside. So far, I've tried theur guinness cream latte, strawberry matcha latte, and vanilla iced latte. Overall, I find their drinks to be on the sweeter side. I don't think they use a house-made vanilla syrup--the vanilla tasted pretty artificial, so I wouldn't recommend that one. If you enjoy creamy, rich specialty drinks, the guinness latte is a good choice. Superb coffee at Ondo--delicious roasts and really well made. Very much artisanal in the best way possible. On my last visit, it was a hot day and I needed something cold. I was delighted that I could get a pour over of an Ethiopian roast from Berkeley put on ice. Yum. And what's more, the atmosphere and aesthetic inside is simple and elegant. Ondo Coffee is by far one of the hippest and coolest coffee shops I have visited in a while! This specialty coffee shop located in East Hollywood is tucked away in a neighborhood nearby the LACC. There is no parking lot but there is a lot of street parking options all around. Inside, they have a cozy and cool ambiance with some retro Japanese vibes. They have an upstairs and downstairs area in the shop with about 4-5 tables for seating downstairs and additional seating upstairs. For their menu, they have a great selection of different specialty drinks to choose from. Wifey and I decided to try the Strawberry Matcha Latte and the Mt. Hoji. Both drinks were some of the best drinks we have tried in a while with great depth of flavors! Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our experience grabbing drinks and hanging out here. The taste of their Earl Grey Latte was interesting, in a good way. I thought it might've been a little bit on the milky side, but nothing over the top.The ambiance of the place is very modern and hipster to me. They have a great wall selection of beans to purchase and a second story level where you can study and work in. If you're into quality and specialty coffee, Ondo Coffee is a must visit. I've had some unique single origin coffees from there. While Ondo doesn't roast their own coffee, they serve specialty and estate coffee from other roasters. Not all coffees are alike. Coffee flavor comes from coffee plant species & variety, location, harvesting, processing and roasting. They do serve the creme del a creme of coffee.. Geisha coffee which is a bit more floral, tea like with fruit notes. One unique coffee that I had recently from here from Columbia, a pink bourbon variety was processed with hops. Very unique flavor that had notes of that of an IPA and nectarines. Great cafe to try if you're into specialty coffees. Ondo is tucked away in East Hollywood behind LACC/Braille Institute. Stumbled upon this beautiful cafe while walking around the area. I felt sooo euphoric as I walked up to the loft area and saw the quirky books and somehow futuristic but retro computer. The vibe of this coffee shop is unbeatable. The music is always undiscovered beautiful indie music that matches the aesthetic videos on the huge projector above the cashier stand. I always get lucky and go when there's not that many people in the loft area and it's so fun to get some work done from that bird's eye view. It's a small shop but has more character and coziness than all the cafes I've been to in LA. Their strawberry matcha is AMAZING. Not too sweet. Deep, rich matcha flavor and color. Homemade strawberry puree. Absolute heavennn. Their iced tea is refreshing and flavorful, even without added sugar. I love their little pastry bites. Did I spend $9 on coffee, including tip? Yes. Would I do it again? Yes, but sporadically since I work too close to this cafe. Very cute space and nice location in a developing area of E. Hollywood. Their basic coffee is between $4.50/$5, and it's a tasty brew. I stopped getting their coffee because I wasn't getting that caffeine kick I'd expect from a pricey cup of coffee. However, their matcha is some of the best I've had in LA. I get that nice, sustained, mellow caffeination. I generally get their iced matcha americano and add my own milk at work. Their salted chocolate chip cookie is very good and always tempting me. They raised their prices $.50 for tariffs. They have a punch card that gets you $5 off. I would have expected them to raise their punch card to $5.50 to accommodate, but they don't-I haven't asked. All in all, great cafe with tasty coffee and excellent matcha.
