I've driven past this location for years and the parking lot always seemed to be full so I gave it a try this weekend for breakfast. Not sure why it as popular as the parking lot implies. Food and service were okay but the place feels pretty run down. The back of the booth I was sitting in was loose, the cap to the Log Cabin syrup was broken making it hard to open without getting my hands sticky and when I went to the restroom to wash them off the restroom looked more run down than the front of house. I guess locals are used to it and may find the charm but for a visitor passing through it won't entice me to return. read more

A good little home town restaurant. The soup was very tasty. I ordered the chop steak with raw onions as well as a cup of their chilli. I put both on the on the chopped steak and it was amazing. This was a nice little find and I am so glad we stopped on our trip. We are not local so without Yelp we would had never known or found the place. We travel to Marshall often and always wanted to stop in to try. It's your typical small hometown diner with a friendly environment. The menu is huge with 4 pages of options. Our food came quickly and tasted great. Our waitress was also efficient and friendly. The restaurant was not set up to be pandemic friendly, therefore we had people sitting in tables on all sides of us which was fairly surprising but didn't bother me personally too much. The Diner is as big as a gas station really. I was surprised it was so small and simply impressed with my breakfast. We walked in after a 2-1/2 hour hike nearby and were starving. The place was packed. Only one empty table. We were a party of 2 adults, 3 children. Order was taken quick enough. Took 37 min for the food to arrive. I had the homemade chip beef gravy on biscuits (2) with scrambeled eggs (2) and a side of bacon (4). I ate every last bite of everything and even tried a bite of my daughters waffle. Everything was delicious! I was so very happy with the chip beef gravy!! Can't wait to go back and get it again. I'd like to try lunch but that chip beef will be a struggle to avoid! read more

This place is okay, but nothing special. I had the chicken fried steak with white gravy and it tasted like it was a slab of meat that came frozen off the delivery truck. The vegetables also tasted like they had been frozen and warmed in the oven or microwave. Their wasn't much taste to any of the food I had. Too noisy to frequent, but the food was great. We stopped in on a Saturday for breakfast, skipping our routine of having our Saturday breakfast at Mom's Country Kitchen in Front Royal. If I'd only known this trip would end up with us making a whopping big impulse buy from the Ford dealer, maybe we'd have stayed home (but that's another story). I'd been hankering for Eggs Benedict, and was delighted to see two versions on the menu. I ordered the "Irish" Benedict, which had crispy corned beef hash in lieu of Canadian bacon or ham. In spite of the lumpy Hollandaise sauce, it was delicious! I practically licked the plate. Hubs ordered sausage gravy over biscuits. The biscuits were soft and the gravy made in-house. Both pluses! Now the negative: this place is a big box of drywall painted in shiny eggshell paint with hard tile floors. The total lack of soft surfaces or effective partitions rendered it practically an echo chamber. Throw in a couple of partly-deaf biker clubs all "talking" (yelling) over each other at the same time and you have a cacophonous din that made conversation at our table nearly impossible. Hubs measured the sound level at a constant 77-80 db. Almost enough to require hearing protection and WAY above the 45-60 recommended for comfortable conversation. All they need to do is install a FEW acoustically-dampening surfaces and they could cheaply fix this problem. read more

I arrived and we are one of two tables in the restaurant and we sat there for 20 minutes waiting to be served while the wait staff is hanging out with someone hanging out with a screaming baby; the other table got up and left. I went around and asked if we were supposed to order at the counter. She said no she'd be with us in a minute and we finally just gave up and left. A few friends and I went apple picking in the area, and once we were done, we needed some real food in our tummies. Yelping places around there were only a few options including Marshall Diner so we thought we'd give it a try. Having never really visited a small town in the US, the street where Marshall Diner is located reminded me of American movies where small towns are pictured as having one diner and one dry clean with the town's name on the front of the door :D The food was good, a bit on the greasy side, and the service nothing special. The prices were inexpensive to what you'd pay closer to the city. If you're around here and want a cheap meal, then this is prolly a good spot. read more

I just love this place. I arrived right before closing and they graciously served me. I had THE BEST chicken Alfredo I think I've ever had. The chicken was moist, flavorful, and there was a lot of it. The Alfredo sauce was equally wonderful, and full of rich flavors. I'm embarrassed to say that I chased it down with a lemon meringue pie, also excellent. Overall this quick in and out was a home run. Highly recommended!!! read more

I actually ate here twice yesterday, once for breakfast then again for lunch; only due to convenience because of my day. I thought the breakfast was just okay, I ordered the 3 egg omelette with bacon and cheese with a side order of hashbrowns. The omelette got points for being very warm however the pound or so of cheese on it took all the flavor of the egg away, so it was more like a cheese omelette(is that even possible) with egg and bacon. However the hashbrowns were cooked exactly to my likings crispy on the edges and soft on the inside, I completely destroyed those. Came back later in the day for lunch and ordered the Monterey Burger, which was a cheeseburger with sauteed onions on grilled rye bread and came with fries. The sandwich was surprisingly good but the fries were a little cold an undercooked. Overall the service was really good and if I were in this area again I would more than likely eat here, although there did not seem like too many other choices around. "So far, the coffee is good." That was about 5 minutes into the Marshall Diner experience. It didn't get any better. I don't like to give mediocre reviews, but I've got to tell you that this diner was barely that - mediocre. The good - Service and $$. The waitress was genuinely nice and friendly. She promptly took my order and kept my coffee topped off. Also the prices were relatively inexpensive. Unfortunately, you get what you pay for. The bad - Everything else. I wasn't impressed at all with the food. I ordered a Garden Omelet w/ home fries and toast. I had one taste of the home fries and left the rest. To me, they didn't even taste like potatoes. The omelet was "alright," I probably could have done better myself if allowed back in the kitchen. I would suggest that if you're in the Marshall area, and you have a hankering for a good breakfast, just keep on driving past this diner, and head to the Old Salem Restaurant. My sister and I stopped here on the way back from sky meadows park. We always like trying little hole in the wall places and that's just what we got. Atmosphere- it's a small diner in a small town, not some fancy New Jersey diner. There is outdated "art" on the wall and the tables and chairs are nothing fancy. It was clean, although it seemed like it hadn't been updated since the 1950s. The bathroom was clean. Service- our server was nice. He wasn't overly friendly or outstanding. He was kind and answered our questions and brought us everything we needed. Food- I had the steak and cheese with onion rings. I ordered the kids chicken fingers and fries for my 2 little ones. My sister ordered the chili. The steak and cheese was good- I ended up taking the filling from 1 half of the sandwich and putting it in the other to make a more meaty half sandwich. It was good... Just what I expected. Kinda greasy but it's a diner! The onion rings were battered and fried, so we're the chicken fingers and crinkle cut fries. They were out of chili, so we didn't get to try that. Overall- this was pretty much exactly what you would expect from a small little diner. There wasn't anything that made it bad but there wasn't anything to make it amazing either. Went there for breakfast on a Sunday at noon. Parking lot was full but plenty of space inside. Staff was friendly and the service was quick. I got a cup of vegetable soup which was delicious. 10/19/14 There aren't a ton of places to eat out near Delaplane, VA (land of wineries, Sky meadow state park and lots of farms). One of the "closest" is 10+ miles away in Marshall, VA. Starving after the drive from the DC area and a visit to an orchard, we headed to Marshall Diner. As we pulled up to the place, the enticing signs of the adjacent shop "Mom-made Cookies" reassured us we had stopped at the right place for some delicious home cooked diner food (birds of a feather, right?). Upon entering, we found the place bustling with business. Tables pushed together to accommodate large groups, people of many ethnicities, kids, elders, families all crammed into this little diner for sustenance. A sign stated we should seat ourselves but waitresses noting the size of our group and our bewildered faces came over in spite of the sign to assist in our seating needs. A table was cleaned; we were seated; drinks were brought (they had SWEET TEA and it was GOOD). I had coffee (standard diner-quality and fresh) that was refilled appropriately, as were all the drinks at the table. Our waitress was all the things a diner waitress should be- prompt, slightly sassy, and amiable. She recommended most things but mentioned today the turkey and ham weren't their typical home cooked variety. The myriad of food was ordered: baked tilapia entree, chicken souvlaki plate (touted by our waitress as "the best thing on the menu"), cheeseburgers, a biscuit, lemon meringue and apple pie. The baked tilapia was perfectly cooked (not a single bit of dryness), tastily seasoned (nothing too special but flavorful), came with a salad (believe it or not French was a salad dressing option to my husband's excitement), veggies (mostly celery, carrots, string beans with a smoky essence to it), mash potato with brown gravy (gravy just ok, potatoes real). My chicken souvlaki tender chicken in warm pita with lettuce, feta, yogurt, tomatoes. Tasty, well cooked, satisfying but a far cry from actual greek food which isn't hard to believe in a town of less than 2000 people in the middle of no-where Virginia. Burgers were substantial (the kid's burger was the same size as the regular), cooked well done, clearly home made and partnered with golden crispy fries. All who ate them at the table stated they were good burgers (clearly evident from the emptiness of their plates). Pie slices and biscuit were also devoured and the check dropped before we had all even gotten our food (lol). Marshall diner is a great little diner that makes you feel like you pulled up a chair at your old white grandmother's formica kitchen table after a tiring day (in fact, I think grandma was working the register). The food isn't something you pine for into the wee hours of night but it is most definitely comforting in that predictable home-cooking kind of way. The service is swift without feeling pressured or rushed (despite the ridiculously early check drop). The clientele warm and friendly (a lady with dogs in the car outside encouraged us to keep her pooches company while she tried to grab a quick bite). Another perk: NO ONE stared at us although were were a multi-racial group ( a rarity in small-town Virginia). I would go back. read more

Marshall Diner gets 0 stars in that regard. *0* The building interior has a greasy "feel" to it - you just know that the walls haven't been scrubbed and painted in quite some time. But the rest room? Had I gone in there before I ordered instead of after I finished eating, I would have left without doing so. Disgusting. I felt the need to wash up after leaving it. The food was typical diner food, my burger properly prepared to my liking, I wasn't crazy about the crinkle cut fries though.
