10/19/14 There aren't a ton of places to eat out near Delaplane, VA (land of wineries, Sky meadow state park and lots of farms). One of the "closest" is 10+ miles away in Marshall, VA. Starving after the drive from the DC area and a visit to an orchard, we headed to Marshall Diner. As we pulled up to the place, the enticing signs of the adjacent shop "Mom-made Cookies" reassured us we had stopped at the right place for some delicious home cooked diner food (birds of a feather, right?). Upon entering, we found the place bustling with business. Tables pushed together to accommodate large groups, people of many ethnicities, kids, elders, families all crammed into this little diner for sustenance. A sign stated we should seat ourselves but waitresses noting the size of our group and our bewildered faces came over in spite of the sign to assist in our seating needs. A table was cleaned; we were seated; drinks were brought (they had SWEET TEA and it was GOOD). I had coffee (standard diner-quality and fresh) that was refilled appropriately, as were all the drinks at the table. Our waitress was all the things a diner waitress should be- prompt, slightly sassy, and amiable. She recommended most things but mentioned today the turkey and ham weren't their typical home cooked variety. The myriad of food was ordered: baked tilapia entree, chicken souvlaki plate (touted by our waitress as "the best thing on the menu"), cheeseburgers, a biscuit, lemon meringue and apple pie. The baked tilapia was perfectly cooked (not a single bit of dryness), tastily seasoned (nothing too special but flavorful), came with a salad (believe it or not French was a salad dressing option to my husband's excitement), veggies (mostly celery, carrots, string beans with a smoky essence to it), mash potato with brown gravy (gravy just ok, potatoes real). My chicken souvlaki tender chicken in warm pita with lettuce, feta, yogurt, tomatoes. Tasty, well cooked, satisfying but a far cry from actual greek food which isn't hard to believe in a town of less than 2000 people in the middle of no-where Virginia. Burgers were substantial (the kid's burger was the same size as the regular), cooked well done, clearly home made and partnered with golden crispy fries. All who ate them at the table stated they were good burgers (clearly evident from the emptiness of their plates). Pie slices and biscuit were also devoured and the check dropped before we had all even gotten our food (lol). Marshall diner is a great little diner that makes you feel like you pulled up a chair at your old white grandmother's formica kitchen table after a tiring day (in fact, I think grandma was working the register). The food isn't something you pine for into the wee hours of night but it is most definitely comforting in that predictable home-cooking kind of way. The service is swift without feeling pressured or rushed (despite the ridiculously early check drop). The clientele warm and friendly (a lady with dogs in the car outside encouraged us to keep her pooches company while she tried to grab a quick bite). If there's one thing that's important to me when it comes to food, it's cleanliness. Marshall Diner gets 0 stars in that regard. *0* The building interior has a greasy "feel" to it - you just know that the walls haven't been scrubbed and painted in quite some time. But the rest room? Had I gone in there before I ordered instead of after I finished eating, I would have left without doing so. Disgusting. I felt the need to wash up after leaving it. The food was typical diner food, my burger properly prepared to my liking, I wasn't crazy about the crinkle cut fries though. This is a small town diner, and is exactly what you'd hope: inexpensive breakfast fare in a laid-back spot. My uncle and I stopped by on the way to Tennessee and were glad we chose this rather than fast food or something. I had scrambled eggs over sausage gravy and biscuits, which was massive and tasty, and my uncle had a combo with eggs, sausage, toast and so on. The coffee was tasty and the nice waitress kept it coming. The place is small but surprisingly spacious -- as we were there, it was just us and a couple who seemed like regulars came in and one of the staff chatted with them, but then a bunch of college kids came in and there was room for them in the back. Stopped in by chance off the interstate. Generic diner menu, but the food was all exceptional. Best biscuits I've had in a while. My steak omelet was the best I've ever had. As I pulled each bite away with my fork, a perfectly layered omelet remained in tact. My wife found the French toast equally exceptional. This is basic food, perfectly prepare with simple, fresh ingredients. We stumbled on Marshall Diner the first time. We will go out of out way to eat here if ever in the area again. Stopped for a bite after spending the afternoon on the Skyline trail. It's small and unassuming but gives you fresh good home cooking. I had a chili cheese dog and onion rings. Hubby had grilled cheese w bacon. My chili was housemade and awesome. Onion ring batter was a tad heavy. Hub said his sw was just ok. Decor is old and faded but the bathroom is newly renovated. Single waiter but he kept up w the growing crowd coming out from the park. Nice slice of small hometown Marshall. Would return, would recommend. read more

This dinner is so comfortable and quaint you feel like your at home in your kitchen. You must stop by if your in the area either picking fruit at nearby orchards or visiting wineries. Everyone local knows it and that's your first hint that if you need comfort food after a long day and are dreaming of kicking back with home iced tea, this is the spot! I had two chili dogs and onion rings and they were great. The chili actually had visible ground beef and large kidney beans, they were really good. The onion rings were crispy and the iced tea was so good I was looking for my grandmother to come out of the kitchen! The food was good, people were super nice, and it was the perfect quick stop on our drive through Virginia. We had a toddler along who enjoyed coloring, talking to our fantastic waitress, Kim, and they offer about 10 kids meal options that cover breakfast and lunch/dinner. The biscuits and sausage gravy were the perfect southern meal and the bacon was awesome. We will definitely return next time we pass through! read more

America's Favorite Diner! That is what it says in the menu. I had to chuckle. Has all of America voted this their favorite diner? We were driving through Marshall and decided to stop for a late breakfast. What a treat! We couldn't decide what we wanted so we tried a number of things. Waffles, eggs, cream chipped beef were ordered. All were great. And the service was fantastic. The place was busy on a Sunday morning but we got all sorts of great attention from the staff. We told our waiter it was our first visit and he went out of his way to make suggestions for us. He even brought us some samples to make sure we came back to try their other foods. Our visit to Marshall Diner included a pleasant atmosphere, delicious food and great service by a staff that knows how to take good care of their customers. Marshall Diner is a quaint, family friendly restaurant with very friendly staff. They offer well prepared, traditional diner fare at a reasonable price. Their BLT was loaded with bacon and was topped with ripe tomatoes and crisp lettuce, their signature Marshall Burger was a nice twist on a traditional burger, and I would probably order that again. read more

I went to the Marshall Diner once, about 3 months ago, so this review may be affected by what I recall (or don't recall). I had a ham and cheese omelet with home fries and wheat toast -- my normal diner breakfast. It was about a three egg omelet, somewhat generously filled, and had nice texture. The cheese -- which I believe is the make-or-break component -- was a mild cheddar; it wasn't anything special, but was more flavorful than ordinary tangy American. The ham (diced) was fairly ordinary, but it thankfully wasn't too salty. The home fries were adequate, but could have been crispier. The toast was your basic grocery store wheat bread. Overall, a solid, but not particularly remarkable, diner breakfast. read more

7/14/2019 We have eaten at Marshall since the first week it opened. We are frequent customers. We ate tonight and will most likely be our last visit. The food was good and the service fine, but the kicker is the charge for a 1/4 cup serving of ice cream with a small amount of chocolate syrup was $4.99 which we have had on many previous visits for $1.99. Disappointing breakfast. Had higher expectations based on Yelp and Google ratings. Over cooked eggs, sorry-excuse-for-a-biscuit, and mug of hot tea that tasted like coffee did not make a good impression. Good service and place was clean. I recommend going a short distance down the road to Red Truck Bakery instead (we stopped there afterwards and regretted not having breakfast there). read more

This is a small-town diner. If you go into it with that expectation, you will have a good meal. It is a little dirty. You will leave smelling like the kitchen. Many of the items are out of cans or boxes. The staff is friendly and the service is usually fast. The best thing is that it isn't a chain and I'm supporting a local business. Overall disappointing. We stopped in on the way back from Linden and it showed 4 stars at this diner. Lots of cars were here but not that many inside. Seat your self. Asking for a high chair felt like I was putting the girl out. We ordered and the food took quite a while. About 20 minutes. For late breakfast that's a little slower than we were used to but, ok. Anyway the parents food came out but that's when they 'realized' they did not have any Mac and cheese. The only food we ordered for my younger who at this point was melting from hunger. So it took 20 minutes for them to realize they could not make the food ordered?? Ok. So for my food: The omelette was pretty good and hot. The bacon inside though was very tough and chewy. The hash browns were cold. Clearly they made the omelette recently but not the hash browns. My wife ordered a coffee and never once did they offer her another cup or offer me another ice tea. When the kids food finally came the waffle was really good. When we were about to pay we realized they also made a mistake on the bill. They charged us for a side of bacon that never arrived. Nothing fancy, just a genuine small town diner unspoiled by the more upscale places in the area. Good solid comfort food, large portions, reasonable prices and friendly service. We stopped en route home from a winery visit - perfect way to absorb the alcohol. My wife and I each had diner staples, hot turkey and hot roast beef sandwiches, both excellent. Each came with a choice of soup or salad. We chose the salad which was, again, a large portion and very fresh. We will be back. read more

This is by far the worst restaurant I've ever been to. The service was atrocious. There was one waitress when the place was full of people and she said it's always like this. There were three people in my party and we ordered an appetizer,which was the chili cheese fries, this got to us pretty fast but it was obviously straight out of the microwave. It was awful and full of onions! In fact everything on the menu is full of onions. If you go here, I hope you like onions! When the food finally arrived it wasn't what I expected but that was due to me not realizing what I ordered, but the food itself was bland and in great need of seasoning. After getting the check we sat there for a good 15 minutes while watching the waitress frantically handle all the other tables while waiting for her to come get our money. The Marshall Diner has definitely stepped up over the years and is worth a stop for their amazing breakfast. My personal favorites include their french toast, eggs benedict, and the pecan waffles. The side of hash browns I usually get is always plentiful and more than enough. Service is also on top of it, I've never had to wait long for a coffee or drink refill. Sometimes extra help will come out of the kitchen if there's a rush, you can really tell it's a staff that works together! Also worth noting... One time I came here with some family and friends for my birthday because breakfast was the only time that really worked for us that day, and once the wait staff heard of that they came out with some chocolate cake and sang! Hi we were passing through and stopped here a cpl of days after the 2016 snow storm. The pkg lot was plowed nicely so my 80yo mom could walk easily... When we entered we were the only ppl there, except staff. It was warm the two gentlemen were welcoming!! It IS a diner... Do NOT expect ihop, applebees or bww!!! Bc its older a lot of their decorations are faded and the lighting isnt LED... Im not sure what the other reviewers saw... But i thought the place was clean, just older. The bathrooms were clean... The menu was all over the place... I liked that bc i could have breakfast lunch or dinner plus a few things i would have never thought of in a diner!! It was a great surprise!! Ok food... Mom had a burger, hubby had the buffalo chicken sandwich and i had the cajun chicken... Destroyed!!! All of them were great!!! Even mom took what she could eat home... And ate the leftovers later on!!! The service was great he had his head on a swivel and constantly asked us how were doing. When other ppl started to flood in he still kept asking!! We stopped here on the way home from apple picking. Had 5 in our party, including 2 small children. We were looking for something local and decided on Marshall Diner on way back to Northern Va. Service was excellent, food was definitely above average. Prices are fair. Restaurant was clean and worn, had a real local vibe. We will go back! read more
