I have been to Mare a handful of times, I understand that we are in the middle of a pandemic but when a bunch of people aren't wearing masks to walk around and the manager, Ron Coffey, comes up to just your table and calls you out on it makes you feel a little outraged, and lies that he's making rounds around the restaurant letting people know. Absolute worst service and food that I've ever experienced and I eat out at least 4 times a week. My party of 4 arrived at 7:15 and we didn't receive our meals until 9:30. My aunt ordered the poached egg Cesar salad with chicken and the chicken was like rubber. When we spoke the manager about how long it took to get the food out and the rubber chicken he was extremely rude and down right obnoxious. The view is the only thing this restaurant has going for it at the moment. We live nearby and have eaten there 4 times since they opened (we REALLY wanted to like it!) and the food is consistently sub-standard. Huge let-down. The entrees are drenched in sauces, or incorporate flavors that no one at the table thinks work together, or aren't cooked properly. We sadly realized after the last bad meal there that it's not just a matter of a kitchen coming up to speed after recently opening, but that it's the taste and palette of the chef that is at the core of the issue. Unless those change, the recipes and hence the food are pretty much doomed to remaining mediocre. That is a real shame. So, no more dining there. I only gave this place 3 stars because I will return only for the occasional $14-$15 cocktail (they're not bad) while there are tables still outside. read more

The view is nice... the service is terrible. The food is mediocre at best. Disappointing. We waited for almost 2 hours for our food and when it came out most of it was cold. It's a beautiful restaurant but that's it, all the reviews about the sound is accurate, we literally had to yell at each other to hear each other. Enjoyed our dinner at Mare very much. I had an excellent pasta that was huge with more than enough to bring home. We sat on the outside patio which was very pleasant on a nice evening. We had sarah as our server and I kid you not in all 21 years of my life she is the most friendly upbeat and positive server I've had in my life. She was extremely attentive and made sure we were always pleased. She told us she would take pictures of us (and as a big Instagram fan I was pumped). Atmosphere: 4 Really nice choice to use this rooftop location; great views. Unique on the East Side. Traffic flow around the bar and out to the balconies can be a bit awkward (admittedly, some of this has to do with the fact that they are busy at the moment). Host staff and management were not very impressive - nobody checked in at the table, no acknowledgement at all on the way out (though we passed three host staff talking to each other). Service: 3 minus Server was nice, but obviously new and relatively incompetent. Didn't know the menu. No salt and pepper on he table; seemed put out when asked to get some. Disappeared for stretches of time. Had no idea what a cappuccino was. Food: 3 minus This one is a bit baffling. We know the chef de cuisine has experience and cred, but the kitchen missed on almost every meal. Frutti de Mare was full of over cooked shellfish (2 at the table, true for both). Scallops were fine, but accompanying corn salad was not good at all. Filet was on menu but 86'd for the evening - replaced with a Ribeye. The ribeye came 1/2 inch thick (seriously) and cooked medium well despite the medium rare order. To the servers credit, she did ask and was informed of the problem. The fix was a comped beer - not an acceptable response. Summary: Good potential, but this place needs to step up. We get that this is a hot place at the moment and that the rooftop space will always be a draw in the good weather. If Mare wants to make it long term, however, particularly in a city with a restaurant scene like Providence's, they really need to work on the details. read more

Well lit, could read the menu easily. The food was delicious, and priced well. Our server, Sarah, was fantastic. She made the dining experience that much better. Love roof top restaurants and this place has a nice ambiance but it is not good for dinner. Hostess refused to seat us outside even though there were plenty of tables. Table was dirty. A ton of black specks in the water. Terrible service. Bunch of kids for waiters and waitresses. Long wait for drinks and food. Waiter didn't check in on us except to take our order. Never got a 2nd drink. Had to ask for the check 3 times from different waiters. I might consider going back for drinks at the bar only. Pizza was good. Swordfish was only ok. Mixed drink was good. The one star is for the very nice waiter we had. Our experience at this establishment was short lived today. It was our first time at the restaurant. We went to check out their brunch menu. I Walked in with my son and husband and my brother in law whom both were wearing hats. They were asked to take them off and they did. What's strange was when we were seated there was a gentleman at the bar and at another table both wearing hats. So my husband and brother in law put their hats back on. A little later another man comes up to us and asks my husband and brother in law to take their hats off. And they did. We watched the man walk by in hopes he would do the same with the other two gentlemen, but what was baffling was the man did not go up to neither the man at the bar nor the man at another table to have them take theirs off as well. So we ended up leaving. I would never dine at a restaurant where they pick and choose who and how they enforce their rules. Have a blessed day. read more

I didn't find much else that met the bar that the visuals set when one arrives. Oysters were $36/dz. None detached from shell. Loads of crumbled shell bits swirled in with oyster. Guess no one ever shucked before. Suggested this was not so great to the roving manager or table greeter or powerless toddler. No sure who he really was. Cuz commenting resulted in no attempts to improve that really pricey and mediocre presentation. Skip the oysters. Should I have been bellicose or rude, and demand they toss the oysters? Staff in general are lost in the fog. I asked for a wine recommendation - just don't do that. Asked about specific and unfamiliar ingredients like Oreganata Persillade. (Persillade is a sauce or seasoning mixture of parsley chopped together with seasonings including garlic, herbs, oil, and vinegar.) Our server was clueless. Our server kept using We - as in: how are We, are We having dessert. Is this person off her rocker, having a delusional break? Somebody (that means you: management) needs to professionally call this out and stop it. I'm not in a dementia-care ward or under the age of 2, are you? Food - some hits. Spare ribs were good. Beet salad was ok, but not very flavorful even though the ingredients ought to ring out in your mouth. Pasta sauces were either overwhelming or under seasoned. This was one of my favorite places to come for dinner with my family, however when I tried to bring my boyfriend I had such a bad experience I felt compelled to write a review. We were treated so poorly by the waitstaff, our salads didn't come out for 45 minutes, and our dessert didn't come out for another half hour (we ordered pizza too but that arrived promptly). At that point I felt trapped in a rooftop restaurant purgatory where all I wanted to do was get the check, but our dessert would only take "two more minutes" (he said to us for the third time). A family of four next to us were able to arrive after us and leave before us after a full dinner. When I asked for my peach cobbler to go and requested the check, it finally arrived (burnt). It tasted of chemicals. They were gracious enough to take it off our bill, but I still feel as though this is a place one should only come for drinks. read more

So first off let me start with saying this place is beautiful and it will be a bit come summer time when everything is opened up . Our waitress Sara was the best and was very attentive. I ordered the chicken piccata and my date order one of the pizzas- I just ate his pizza. I mentioned that the chicken was not my cup of tea- just didn't like it and the manager immediately came out and tried to rectify the situation, taking it off the bill. That impressed me as I could tell it was really important to them that I was a satisfied customer. I would come back and try something else since the experience was actually really positive. I stopped by Mare for a couple of drinks to check out the location. I did not eat but the food looked good. The space is fantastic. The bar service was great despite it being fairly busy. There is free valet parking which was quick and efficient. I think Mare has a lot of potential and look forward to grabbing a bite to eat next time. Went there twice. The food is OK, but the service leaves much to be desired. Not very attentive. On the first visit there were 2 of us. Service was very slow even though it was not busy. Food was cold. When coffee was served, there were no spoons, sugar, cream. Had to ask for it all. When it finally came the coffee was cold. On the 2nd visit we were 5. Water glasses came with fingers in the glass. Drinks were made wrong and given tot he wrong person. Oil and bread brought and when we asked for a spoon for the oil we were questioned as to why we needed it. My drink was made wrong TWICE. Not very attentive, we had to search for the waiter again even though not very busy. The place is beautiful, the food is good but the service stinks. I would be weary. read more

We arrived to Mare to celebrate a friends birthday. The atmosphere was great. John and his team are fantastic. We sat inside but felt like we were outside with the doors open and the view of Providence in the background. The drinks were the perfect accompany to the wide array of appetizers. The cheese board is a must~ the chutney on the board is just phenomenal. Our entrees were amazing~ the paella was enough for 2 plus a take home for lunch the next day. The seafood was yummy with just enough crunch of rice on the bottom to make it irresistible. After dinner we went out to the patio for drinks. We sat on a comfy couch and chatted the night away. Here's my review. They are newly opened so they have a few kinks to work out. Overall the place is pretty esthetically with some nice views of the upper bay. Their bartenders are slow and rude. We heard others complain about the wait and the skill of bar staff. Our wait was half of what was quoted, not bad and our table was on opposite side of bar and outside. That was perfect for the weather. Menu selection is heavy seafood, usually since the place means ocean in Italian. Good selection of starters, pizza, salads, appetizers and entrees. Our waitress Jessica was funny, informative and liked us as we wre her favorite couple of the night. Her words. Entrees were delicious: seared scallops ffor D and pasta with seafood for me. Both were well prepared, tasty and worth their price. No dessert for us. We also didn't order more drinks due to earlier experience. Overall I liked it. D thought the volume was very loud which at times made it difficult to hear one another both at bar and table. I'd go back and grab another meal. We went on Saturday night. It was a busy night, they don't take reservations but somehow fit our party of 4 in. Cool. I saw the pizza oven as I walked in so I already knew I wanted to have pizza that night. We ordered a bottle of white wine sea pearl that our server Amber recommended . It was a crisp white, very good. The other two in our parties got a mixed drink and a martini. Ordered a calamari to start. Came out hot and fresh very good. I ordered a pizza with arugula, prosciutto with a balsamic glaze on top, hubs got a steak ordered med rare, others got a chicken dish and a pappardelle pasta with meat sauce. All came out hot. Pizza was good, great char on bottom, pasta dish very good, chicken was average and the steak came out med well. Server offered immediately to take it back after he told her but my hubs refused as he would have to wait for a new steak to cook and we all would have been finished before he got it. He just said to her to tell the kitchen that it happened. To Mare's credit, the manager came over and did offer to recook it again but my hubs didn't want to wait the at least 10 minutes to recook so again he refused but ate it anyways. They at least took it off the bill for us. Thank you. Only con is the noise level is extremely loud due to the acoustics in the restaurant. read more

We had a great experience at Mare last night. The decor is fantastic. Octopus and short rib apps were excellent. Pizza was very good. I had the pappardelle and a meatball app as a main. Fantastic. 2 people loved the scallops and the fourth enjoyed the swordfish. We only had 2 beers and 2 wines. If you like cocktails the bar seemed to be well enjoyed. On my last two visits, the service was not good. On the first visit, the assistant server got us water and bread and olive oil right away, but then we waited for ten minutes for someone to take our drink order (we were seated outside). Even then, we had to flag down a random server to send our server our way. This was also true for the party of four that had been in the elevator with us. On the second visit, our server was inattentive. I asked for a six-ounce pour but was brought a nine-ounce. They charged me for the six-ounce and told me to keep the nine-ounce, which is fine, but the bill had my friend's wine order wrong, and not in his favor. The server corrected it without a problem, but they were inattentive generally, not just with the drink order. Once again, the server assistant did a better job than the server. I like the food, but not enough to come back given the service issues, especially with cooler weather--the inside dining area is too loud. read more
