We had an opportunity to check out the brand new Mare on Memorial Day. What a beautifully designed rooftop restaurant! We sat at the bar and ordered some drinks and appetizers. Great menu! I always get fried calamari as a starter to compare to other restaurants, so we ordered the Crispy Point Judith Calamari. The batter was light, crisp and tasty and the calamari was very tender. Mare's calamari ranks among the best I've had anywhere, including in the Mediterranean. There were plenty of specialty drinks to choose from, but I put my trust in our bartender to prepare a hot coffee drink for me. I was not disappointed! I also sampled the Lavender Lemonade Mojito, which was visually appealing and very, very good. We sat near the pizza oven and the pies coming out looked amazing. Next time! I went to Mare on a Friday night during restaurant week. It was busy, but my party of 7 was seated quickly. I ordered the vegan bisque for my appetizer; it was sweet and smooth, so delicious! I ordered the salmon filet for my entree and I was blown away by its flavor and its pairing with several sauces and green lentils. Other members of my party ordered the filet mignon and had nothing but good things to say about it. For dessert, each member of my party ordered the flourless chocolate cake option. It was sweet and smooth and was paired with delicious cappuccino ice cream, whipped cream, and raspberries. Overall, the food was outstanding, the prices were reasonable, the wait staff was attentive and professional, despite the large crowd, and the overall atmosphere of the restaurant was beautiful. This is a tough one, so I'm going to be wordy. I was hoping I liked it more since it's in my neighborhood and rooftop/outdoor places for drinks (etc) are in short supply for Providence. So, the vibe, it feels like a big hotel rooftop bar in every way. Ambiance wise, I like it. Service was ok, overall. Food was premium priced, but not premium quality. Definitely higher end dining priced. Simple salad (really lettuce) with chicken added was $19. Oysters, etc premium priced. Just a few of things, apps that is, non entrees, was $80 with tip (no alcohol at all). I've been eating a lot of fish recently when out, and this was much more fishy tasting (older tasting) with the octopus and shellfish than most. Beer list is absolutely atrocious; really hearkening to a hotel bar again, the best you'll get is blue moon or a sam adams offering (see why we didn't have alcohol). Really a two stars deal with an extra star for the open air and decor. read more

Mare Rooftop is a perfect atmosphere to enjoy weekend brunch. We loved the sunshine pouring in and expansive view of the city around us. They have a limited number of classic breakfast items available (omelette, eggs benedict, eggs other ways), and a few special sweet items (Belgian waffles, and brioche French toast) and pretty good coffee to accompany them. The food was well prepared and a bit fresher tasting than your usual breakfast fare. The four of us really enjoyed it there, and will definitely go again. read more

I tried Mare Rooftop over the weekend with a few friends. I was blown away by the food. We ordered the Mare Paella, Short Rib and Prosciutto Pizza. It did not disappoint! Our server, Sarah was very friendly and gave us great recommendations for cocktails. The La Forma was my favorite. She had a great sense of humor and constantly checked up on us. The manager, Victoria introduced herself to us and was very kind/ personable. Overall, it was a great experience and I will be back!! read more

Let me start off by saying that I have never given out a 1 star review before because I know how damaging it can be for businesses but this one is well deserved. I initially tried to come here Friday night for a drink but evidently they make their own business hours. We tried to come a little before 12AM and they were already closed when online it states they are open until 1AM. My group of friends and I tried to give them a second chance on Saturday night and I can assure you that none of us will be returning. There was an error made with one of our dishes and instead of apologizing for the delay the manager was very confrontational. I then watched him yell and swear at the server in front of the entire dining room. He was pacing through the restaurant talking to himself. We didn't seem to be the only ones to notice this questionable behavior because the guests sitting next to us made a joke about it. The server apologized for the managers behavior. It was extremely uncomfortable and pretty scary to be honest so we quickly finished our meals and left. There will not be a third chance. read more

One of my favorite new restaurants to eat at! My boyfriend and I & another couple checked it out a few months ago and just loved it! Great food/drinks and our wait staff was very professional and nice. I went back for my birthday dinner with my family about a week ago so they could check it out too and they were very impressed, as well. I was there for dinner last night with three friends. Our server Kassidy was amazing -friendly, knowledgable, helpful and pretty amusing! The food was excellent! Crab cakes were delish and the handcut fries were perfect crisp on the outside and almost creamy inside. And they had the best lobster ravioli I have ever had! Spent a wonderful evening with friends at Mare Rooftop last week and have to say that for a restaurant that had JUST opened it had virtually none of the hiccups you expect to find at a new business. Location! Cuisine! Service! Atmosphere! Mare Rooftop has it all. As a couple for Saturday night dinner we grabbed a drink at the bar and relaxed on the couches available on both decks. Our table on the deck rail was ready before finishing the drinks and we enjoyed the great views of Fox Point, the Seekonk River and of course sunset over College Hill. Our Servers were friendly, classy, and professional. The food was excellent! We had the Calamari, Seared Scallops, and NY Sirloin. Mare may be the newest restaurant in Providence but they have quickly claimed a foothold at the top! read more

My partner and I recently dined at Mare Rooftop. This was our second time visiting, and originally dined with them for Valentine's Day. We had a wonderful experience in the past so we were exciting to be back and to enjoy the venue in the warmer weather. We ordered the octopus to start. It was seasoned just right and was one of the best dishes we had ever had. Kudos to the chef. We had hoped to stay for dinner but the service was so slow that we were unable to. For starters, the waiter looked like he had not bathed in weeks and just looked uncleanly.. Not the type of server you would expect at a $50+ a head restaurant. He lacked minimal knowledge about the restaurant such as what they offered for specials and when they opened.... It was just bad service. The couple next to us had been complaining about their experience as well. They were given a Menu with drinks they could no longer make. What????? Not one, but two managers came over to our table which I just found to be overwhelming and uncomfortable. They both insisted they would get our waiter but clearly made no effort to reconcile my problem as he never returned back to the table!!!!! To make a long story short my partner and I left without ordering dinner and went around the corner to Waterman Grille. It's a shame because the food was great but obviously they do not know how to run a restaurant. read more

I went to Mare Rooftop last Friday night. I started a tab with a bartender at the outdoor bar and then transferred our tab over to a table to eat. Service was ridiculously slow and when we were ready to pay the bill to leave, I had to actually get up and go find a bartender to find our server and check us out. Another 20 minutes went by and I had to again go find the bartender - at which point they asked what my credit card looked like and asked me if I was sure I had given it to them. Turns out they had lost it! They took care of our tab, which was the least they could do, but at the end of the night, the bartender texted me that they had actually given the card to someone else - for which my credit card was charged that person's $200 bill! They assured me that the person who took my credit card home would return it the next day and that management would be reaching out to me. No call from anyone - I called back two days later and when I began to explain the story to Ron the manager, I was hung up on. I called back and let it ring for a good two minutes before he answered again. I reexplained what had happened and he acted surprised and upset, and said that the bartenders did not relay this story to him. He assured me he would get to the bottom of it and call me back. I never heard from him, even after leaving a voicemail on his personal cell the next day!! Despite it being a good scene and fairly good food, I will not go back ever. I've been to Mare a few times and enjoyed myself. Drinks are good, food is decent, atmosphere is great. This past Saturday, my parents were visiting from out of town. We had eaten dinner elsewhere on the East Side and thought we'd have a nice night cap at Mare around 10pm. I was excited to show them the great views from the rooftop. I valeted my car and entered the lobby, prepared to take the elevator up. The bouncer behind the desk laughed and said that he could not let my father in with a hoody. For clarity, my father was wearing Sperry's, khaki shorts, a collared shirt, and a hoody over top as it had become a chilly evening. I was mortified. The bouncer, still laughing, pointed to a sign that said "Proper dress required." I understand restaurant dress policies in dining rooms, but disallowing a sweater with hood on a cold evening is ridiculous. Especially considering we were simply looking for a cocktail to end the night. Berating the 60+ community for being cold isn't a good look. I'll be sure he brings a sport coat next time we go out in Providence, though it won't likely be this establishment. read more

I went last night for the first time. Was with a good friend. I'm in my fifties and she's in her thirties. We both felt out of place immediately with preening, glammed up, early twenties selfie-takers surrounding us. We were dressed nicely but not-clearly-fashionably enough to be treated decently by the hostess and front desk staff within the restaurant nor by any server during the entire time we were there. The service is snobbish, condescending, rude and negligent. We could not find an open seat at the bar nor on the rooftop so we returned to the hostess to ask where we could sit and have a drink and she told us to stand. There were no chairs. Eventually we wanted to sit. We took a corner of a (dirty) empty table in a completely empty section of the inside restaurant and at the extreme end, so as not to be in the way. With great speed, another waitress or hostess flew at us in a rage telling us to move immediately. This space (at 10:50 pm) was reserved for large dining parties only. I explained we just wanted drinks but could not find any where else to sit in either location we'd been directed to. She told us to stand and move immediately. No attempt to locate an alternative for us. We moved. The 10 dirty tables in the center of the dining room stood empty for the next hour and a half. The person who addressed us was hasty and rude, no kind or considerate niceties. Our server later was a young man with zero personality or warmth, and who made a sarcastic comment when we did not order a second round of drinks. We were not welcomed by even one employee, but rather, treated with a tinge of derision. We felt like country bumpkins. I actually felt bad about myself later, having been looked down upon, ignored, moved, then derided. We are nice ladies looking to have a drink. Bad customer service and attitude all around here. The only good thing was the gentlemanly security guard in the lobby who greeted and said good night to us with more courtesy in his little finger than any of Mare's awful employees have in their whole body. To redeem themselves, they'd have to replace and train all new front of house staff. I've dined at wonderful places in the world, and this was one of my most negative experiences, solely because of the universally bad attitude of the restaurant staff. read more

OK so here we go- We've been 2 x now. Let me start by saying the atmosphere is beautiful and trendy. Overall, the food is good. We are foodies and we cook a lot and go out to many different restaurants. Our first experience was very good. Our second experience was on Valentine's Day and we were not as impressed; but still good. 1) The valet area at the curb was slick with ice and not shoveled well. My husband had to meet me down he street where there was a clearing to get into the car. I commented at the concierge upon arrival. When we went out to the car 2 hours later - no change. 2) There was a Valentine menu as well as the regular menu- we were not offered the special menu which I didn't remember until we left. 3) The first time we had the margarita pizza it was great- the second time, it was soggy in the center. 4) We also ordered the olives. They were marinated in very aromatic flavorful combination of spices- however, they were very very very salty. 5) The Caesar salad had a lovely egg on top- But over cooked. An added egg is for the luxurious texture and flavor of the yolk. In this case, the yolk was solid. The dressing lacked flavor. 6) We ordered the Clams in Zuppa. The clams were tiny tiny- a little bigger than periwinkles. The sauce was good but very heavy and overwhelming for the little clams. The clams were not the star as they should be. The Crustini was too hard -- they could not absorb the thick Zuppa. Also, the tiny clams were very difficult to eat with the large dinner fork This dish should have been served with a cocktail fork. The experience was messy- This dish was a failure all together. 7) The shrimp cocktail was disappointing. The shrimp were very small. Thus, the dish lacked presentation and not worth the money. 9) The 9 ounce house wine was expensive at 18$ a glass. 8) After all the Apps, we shared the scallops which were delicious. Nicely seared on one side and and cooked perfectly and not over done. Over all good- the atmosphere pulls it together. The food is good but mediocre among all of the top Providence venues. read more

We tried to reserve - no reservations allowed. Not on Open Table either. So we went early and decided - hey, no biggie we will drink on the patio until we get a table. We were told 35 - 45 minute wait. Views great, drinks OK. VERY VERY noisy as all hard surfaces. You have to get your own drinks from the bar. Wait staff were only for tables - not good - to carry 6 drinks all the time. This meant I had to make several trips. Bar tenders helpful and friendly. After almost $100 with tips - one hour 32 minutes later and three requests for our table!! The front hostess and her manager clearly did not care - no apologies. No explanation - kept telling us 15 minutes. We saw several tables of 2 and 4 next to each other - easy to do. All tables movable. Front of house staff did not give a damn. In the end we all left really fed up - especially at their attitude. BEWARE Mare - bad reps get around fast in this town. Lack of interest in your customers cannot be made up with good views! BAD BAD management and don't care attitude. read more

this resturant is amazing! its a must to go to!! i highly recommend it. as a gluten free person it is hard to find a resturant that has food i can eat. Mare has a list of gluten free food and is fantastic. the staff is amazing and very polite. if your in the area you must go! read more
