We went for lunch and ate dinner. We arrived at 2p, waited long for our drinks, we waited long for our apps and then our meal did not arrive until 3:45pm! Almost TWO HOURS! This was after complaining to the managers twice. We ate our meal (which was good) and received the check. The manager apologized but then nothing was even comped! In addition, they actually charged us $2 for ice in our drinks. The restaurant was not full. We will not be returning to this restaurant....and will advise our friends not to either. My husband and I had our 23rd anniversary dinner here. I was hoping to get an outside table but it was seated in a tiny bistro table instead. Seeing that it was Restaurant week I decided to give the selection a try. For appetizers we had the Calamari. I felt it was undercooked and too soft unless thats just how it is supposed to be. I then had the tomato soup as a starter which was great. For the entree my husband had Linguine Vongole with the white wine sauce-Disappointing...he said it tasted like pasta with chicken broth. For myself I had the chicken scaloppine dish. Best item on that dish was the cooked spinach. I felt like I was eating Thanksgiving dinner. It was a small thin portion of chicken breast with some gravy on top. The mashed potatoes did not taste buttery. For dessert I opted to fry the Vanilla Flan. I never was a big fan of this dessert but everyone always raves about it. I found it to be bitter. The place and food presentation itself looked great, the atmosphere, the decor, but the food I wished I would have liked better. Food was good- Attention to service was fair at best. Once it got busy, our waiter did not check back. My wife and I were disappointed that the Lobster Manicotti were no longer available but still on the menu and until ordering it, would have not known. Portions are quite small. We started with the calamari which was golden and tasty. My wife ordered the Paccheri pasta dish. This is an unique dish made with butternut squash. I had the Baked Gnocchetti. My plate was tasty, although the portion was very small. For the hearty eater, Mare Rooftop may not be the place to dine. Mare Rooftop advertises as proper dress required, which I do not quite understand. Dining is casual everywhere these days. Certainly Mare Rooftop is not near the shore, where flip flops and bathing suits would be concerning. I also find it interesting from past reviews, there is a 'strict no hat policy', as stated by the manager Victoria C. Yet the hostess tonight was wearing a black winter hat with pom pom all night. Stylish perhaps, yet contradictory to restaurant policy. Walk the talk or drop the policy, can't have it both ways to your own convenience. However, $20 for a glass of wine is pretty ridiculous. so in essencetwo people paid $40 for a half bottle of wine. It was terrible and they knew it was overcooked and mushed (mash potato consistency) and they still packed it up. They clearly do not care about quality. Rhode Island foodies will check out Mare because it's new, but I doubt they will be back for a return visit. This place put all its chips on the fact that it has a rooftop location, but that's really all it has going for it. And the view from the rooftop is pretty lackluster so even that isn't enough of a draw. The real issue is the below average food and the poor service. We had interactions with hostesses, bar staff, and servers and all of them seemed like they couldn't care less about tending to patrons. To top it off there is just absolutely no personality to this place. No ambiance outside, no discernible "vibe". Much like the overpriced food, the atmosphere is completely "meh". I have mixed emotions. Setting great, view interesting, accustics atrocious, food 50-50 Entry via elevator at Waterman and Elmgrove. Security guard at desk obviously enjoying himself and a great intro. Upon entering the restaurant, two things hit you, the modern, stark yet inviting decor and the incredible blast of noise coming from a full house's talking bouncing off a tile floor and a glass ceiling through which one could see the sky. So, yeah, really nice but this old man will never eat here in the winter when he can't go to the incredible outside dining area to the north or the bar/ lounge area overlooking Providence harbor to the south. Both appropriately quiet. Almost forgot there is a large bar in the corner of the indoor dining area. That's where one expects it to be loud and raucous. Drinks appropriately priced, i.e. 9:00 for top shelf Gin and Tonic, and promptly served. Menu interesting with lots of seafood and Italian offerings, more than the usual red gravy items of traditional R.I. restaurants. Wine list incredibly extensive and a high point with multiple offerings for multiple varietals from France, Spain, Italy, California, Oregon, etc....by the glass ; 6 oz and 9oz and by the bottle. I found the prices fair and covering anyone's level of wine taste. You can tell I was impressed? As for food, here's the 50/50 aspect. I had the", Bolognese over al dente pasta, which was wonderful. Another had a shrimp dish and reported it was excellent. Her husband had a clam dish which was just so-so. The real issue, and I credit it to circumstance and new opening issues, was a simple salad with steak on it. Shortly after ordering, we were told there was no steak and offered a Ribeye. When it came there was no meat and it took some time to flag down anyone who could help. Seems there was no Ribeye either and we were then offered a chicken breast. We were finished with our meals when the chicken came with the notice that the grill had had to be restarted. An odd domino effect caused by new waitstaff /cooks, new restaurant procedures and a mandatory closing time to boot. The restaurant was top notch in how they handled the situation by comping the salad and the glass of wine. Restrooms are also well thought out, separate M&F, Large area, "four holer" ( You know, how else could I have said that?) Double sink, double soap dispenser and, get this, double "Excelerators" with paper towels if you want them. Quite impressive. They obviously did more than the minimum requirements met by most new construction. Plenty of on street or parking lot space in the evenings and a fine Washington Trust ATM on the first floor. So, in short, noisier than "G-Pub" on a Friday night, well spaced interior tables, great outdoor dining and drinks, interesting menu, great wine list, fair prices both food and drink. I'll be back this outdoor season and leave the winter to the youngsters who don't mind background noise. I don't think it would be appropriate for children but, Lord Knows, you could have had a screaming baby there and nobody would have known. read more

I have been here a couple of times, but my most recent visit will absolutely be my last. It was extremely disappointing and embarrassing. My date and I were treated really poorly by Matt while his colleague watched and barely controlled her laughter. When we explained the unfortunate events to the manager they did not seem concerned, and actually gave us the impression that she didn't believe us. Then, when I left a review of our experience on their Facebook page their response was not to apologize and ask me to come back, but to further escalate the situation by telling me I'm not welcome back (as if I would go). It wasn't what I expected from what I thought was a higher end establishment. It was very disappointing overall. I recommend heading over to Al Forno or the rooftop at the Providence G. My boyfriend and I came here last night for a date night and everything was great! The place offers complimentary valet parking but if you don't wanna spend extra bucks tipping the valet guy, you can just park around the corner! When we got there, we asked to sit outside but apparently they have a different menu so we chose to just dine inside. No regrets bc the food was really good! I got the Linguine Vongole and my bf had the prosciutto and arugula pizza. I also got a glass of rose! Soooo when we checked out, I found out that glass was $19.50! It sure tasted good but didnt think it was worth that much lol but it was my fault for not checking the price!! Our server was really really nice when we asked him about the price just to make sure it was right. At the end, he hooked us up some free drinks! My friends and I wanted to have a surprise birthday party for one of my friends last birthday in MA. From the moment we started planning, Rob was fantastic, so welcoming easy going and very easy to plan with. They printed out costumized birthday menues for us and took care of us so so well. I'm so happy we had the opportunity to do this and we had rob as our guy to help us every step of the way. The food was amazing and the staff was too. Here is the problem, the food product is high quality and the presentation is excellent, but the Chefs do not taste there food and nothing is seasoned properly. All the dishes at the table for four people were bland and unseasoned. That is a real shame. If you are the manager of this place, start tasting your food and be sure it is seasoned properly. I'm so torn on this review. I really wanted to love this place. I can't quite figure out what it's trying to be. We stopped in on a weekend afternoon for some cocktails. We went to the bar, I got a drink really quickly, but my friends stood for a solid ten minutes without anyone even looking at them or acknowledging them. The place was empty and there was a ton of staff so this was really inexcusable. The cocktail menu is fun but pricey and once you have your drinks, there isn't really any space outside to mingle or stand to drink them. I think I'll try to come back for dinner since it seems much more like a sit down restaurant than a fun place to meet for cocktails or hang out with friends. The menu looked good, hopefully once I try it it can bring my review up a star. read more

Hostess was on phone (what millennial today is not), but as the first impression of this gorgeous location - one would expect more. Sat at the bar and it appears the bar-tenders do not know the basics: - Ensure Water is offered / refills are offered. I understand this is Wayland Square and we need to be environmentally conscious, but offering water is not too much to ask. - Inquire periodically, as to how our meals taste / do we need anything else. - Professionalism - Employees socializing w/ friends at the bar and engaging w/ the bar-staff, while customers are awaiting attention / opportunity to place an order. Overall, this place will do well with a professional wait-staff, but will NOT survive w/ the current staff. My hypothesis, is that due to the timing of the opening, all of the qualified / well-trained staff were already employed. Management did not inquire once, as to how things were, much like other restaurants in Wayland Square. Will I go back - "Yes." Visited a friend in Providence and she made a reservation for Mare. Of course we are all late 40's, early 50's, so we were a little more "mature" than most of the crowd. It was busy, but not so loud that you have to shout at your friends. Place was hopping-inside and out. Our waiter was sweet, and pretty attentive. We decided to share a few apps and a couple pizzas, as well as a couple of bottles of wine. Everything tasted great, and the check didn't drain our wallets. I'd love to experience an igloo with a group of friends, but the price seems a bit extreme, so for now...I'll just stay indoors. If I'm in the neighborhood again...I'll be back! read more

The place looks great and the view is beautiful. Hostesses are always friendly. The drinks are yummy and the bar staff is awesome! Aliya and Matt are the best! When I've gone I've only sat at the bar. However, this past week I went on Friday and sat at the bar, then I sat at a table with my date. That's where things took a turn. Our waiter Andrew was terrible! He was confused by simple orders and asking for some easy alterations, such as sauce on side. We had to flag him down like 15min after we ordered because he hadn't checked asked us if we needed drinks. Also everyone around us had bread except for us. The poor service is bad but the kitchen takes the cake. Although the octopus is yummy the steak was horrible! The food came out with the wrong side and sauce on the steak rather than on the side like requested. Andrew apologized but seemed clueless. He took the food back and said another steak will be out quickly. My date had cut open a piece of his steak and it was medium well/well done versus a medium rare that it should have been. Literally less than 5min go by and the steak comes out. We thought we were getting a fresh steak. Instead they literally wiped the sauce off the steak and replated it, the same over cooked one he had had!! The manager came to our table to apologize, had them re-fire a new one, and took it off the bill. For $28 the steak wasn't anywhere near worth it. If I could score things individually it would be this: Bar staff & drinks= *5stars Ambiance= *4 stars Waiters & kitchen: *2.5 stars I suggest going early on a nice day before it gets packed and you can't get a seat at the bar. Beware-They charge for ICE!!! Unfortunately something is very wrong with this establishment. The food is terrible, I'd rather stay home and eat top ramen, the management is under qualified and the manager is totally condescending and shouldn't be in a customer service position. My husband and I were out with friends there and we were charged for ice. Yes ice, nothing special about the ice. We asked for the manager to discuss further and he was down right rude and said we could tell everyone we know but he wasnt taking off the charge for ice in each drink! It's principle here people. Now when is the last time you went out for a drink and were charged for ice....that's right never. Hear my words. NEVER AGAIN. Now this I say respectfully, mare you need to change your attitude from top to bottom and serve edible food or you will need to leave because eventually you will not get the business you were hoping for.
