My husband and I have not been here since we've moved but I was in town so I decided to surprise my husband with some carry out Mapo Tofu. Oh my gosh, they did not disappoint. Having it be during a pandemic I didn't know what to expect with carry out- but omg the taste was top notch! I think it's even better than when we had it a years ago!!! Portion size was great and everything was packed with great care. (They even packed the noodles separately from our soup so they don't get soggy)! We ordered the Mapo Shrimp, Beef Noodles, Schezwan stir fried green beans, silken egg with ground beef. Oye the bag was so heavy! We ordered Happy Marriage beef ;P, Mapo tofu, Tianfu tofu and Boiled beef. They are tasted good but not very impressed. It is probably because my hometown is sze chuan and my expectation is high. I would suggest Mapo tofu and Tianfu tofu if you have two people or more to share. My least suggested dish is boiled beef, the favor is not strong enough and tasted plain. The whole China knows "DongPo ham hocks" are sweet flavor, when I got home and look at the food, it was cooked in hot Sichuan pepper sauce with a lot of red oil and taste nothing like how it supposed to be, I dumped them in garbage because no one like it! I would not recommend any of these dishes. In terms of service and atmosphere, the tables are very close together which makes it quite crowded even though most of the restaurant was empty. This review is for the service. It was a Saturday night. The restaurant says it closes at 10 pm on its website. We also confirmed the hours posted on their door before entering it. It was 9:20 pm when we entered the restaurant. There was one table of client's who were still eating and the chairs of all other tables were put on the table. The staff told us that the kitchen was closed. They usually clean the kitchen 30-40 minutes before closing time. I've been to many restaurants and it's the first time that a restaurant rejected clients 40 minutes before it's published closing time. If your kitchen closes at 9: 20 pm, you should just put 9 pm as the closing time. We made a detour to go to your restaurant. It was a waste of our time. read more

I went there for lunch the other day. Both the dishes & the silverware was dirty. I understand that this happens sometimes. So when I asked for clean set I got such a nasty response from the waiter. After that it was all down hill from there. It took 20 min to get anyone's attention to get glass of water. Food is decent... however, don't have so many options with the salt & pepper squid and the salt & pepper squid (without the egg one) should actually have salt and pepper and not be bland. When we pointed it out saying that it was bland and needed salt and pepper, we were given salt only... wtf? Also, when dishes are coming out to the table, to serve it with more manners instead of just plopping it practically on top of the customer who you choose to put the dish near and instead try to rearrange room for the dishes and be more polite and set it down. And when I just finished signing and writing down the tip, it was quickly snatched away in less than a minute . And on the way out, we weren't thanked by the hostess and the cashier who saw us leaving. These people should change their attitudes and stop making my people look bad. I've been here before a few times before, but this Mother's Day experience was horrible. I should've left less tip, but didn't want karma coming at me. I find it difficult to trust people's opinions after this experience. My boyfriend and I were so excited to go to our favorite Joy Yee Noodles in Naperville until were drove up and realized it was closed. So we looked at asian restaurants in the area, and according to the reviews, this was the best place around. We walked in, and immediately, the place was not impressive. The hostess seemed very bored and uninterested in us. After we requested a table for two we had to awkwardly stand there because the lady just walked off, did not say ANYTHING. Ok. So we get seated and the table is dirty... there is a piece of rice laying on it which the hostess takes with her hand and throws on the floor right in front of us.... all righty then. We order our food from a menu what was NOTHING compared to the options you get at Joy Yee (i miss that place so much). Our food arrived and it was nothing exciting our authentic looking. It did not taste special, in fact, it was all very boring. The noodle based dished very VERY heady on noodles, which are cheap but also extremely plain...go figure. All I could say is that after we finished eating, I wished we had never started. There is nothing worse than paying money and forcing your body to digest something less than enjoyable...nothing makes you realize more that life is short, and every meal should be enjoyed, especially the ones you pay money for. The interior of this place is plain gross. FYI- it does not take much money to patch up the holes in your walls and give them a fresh coat of paint. Call me picky- but I consider my time and money to be precious, I do not ever want to waste it on businesses like this. The ones that treat me like they are doing me a favor by seating my at a table that's not clean and serving me food that I later regretted eating. No thanks. Really bad food and customer service. We ordered vegetable tofu and it tasted rotten with a very bad smell. We have had this dish at many restaurants before and know how it tastes. So once upon a Monday night....I was craving Asian food. Usually, I opt for Panda Express, but I wanted something more traditional. As it turns out, most authentic Asian places are closed on Mondays (I guess it's their slow day?) And frankly, I went with Mapo's not because they were my first choice, but because they were OPEN. lol. Many of the Asian restaurants I saw on YELP, that did have better reviews, were closed. I ordered the following for take out: -Lo mein Noodles w/Shrimp -Broiled Lamb -Cashew Chicken Let me start with the Lo-Mein. This was probably the best thing out of all three....it was actually edible. lol, And cooked the way it was supposed to be. But that's about it. It's kind of ironic that the only thing I thought was halfway decent was the cheapest item (by far), for only 7 bucks. Now, with the Cashew Chicken (which I usually ADORE), the Chicken was not thoroughly cooked. This just made me want to gag. And the broiled lamb.....it was BEEF. But what would make a simple mistake forgettable, turned out to be the reason I will never go back to Mapo again. The next day (because after I got home with the food the restaurant was already closed) I called the restaurant to let them know they had given me the wrong thing. I usually don't do this, but the lamb was substantially pricier than the beef (it was about 20 dollars), so why pay for it when all I received....was beef? My boyfriend wouldn't even eat it, it was left untouched and ready for us to take back. But what was unacceptable was that the manager, who was not even present when I picked up my order, insisted that it was lamb and that I was wrong! Now, instead of an apology, I got a lady telling me that we don't know the difference between lamb and beef! She even kept stating, "Well, one can't tell the difference anyway....." Uh, I don't know if this is how you get by selling beef advertised as lamb, but you're wrong Mapo! Finally, after arguing for about 30 minutes, the manager said come in for a refund. Once we got there, the manager was not present and apparently there is no one else in charge. We waited for an hour in there while people who can barely speak English kept telling us "One minute, one minute."......after about 60, we had enough. We came back a few hours later, and a server who previously said she couldn't do anything about it, gave us cash (when we had paid wit credit card......which is odd). All in all, I might have given you another chance.....mediocre food sometimes gets by with excellent service......but shitty food, AND shitty service---No thanks! read more

Well I just ordered take out from this place seeing that it was close to work and had good lunch specials and a descent review. As I was picking up my order I did happen to witness the pleasant staff (Not) in what they do best from all the reviews I have read (that is be RUDE!) in my 5 minutes in this place I was cut in line to pick up my order by a waitress who reached in front of me to place her bill to be paid as well as witnessed her literally run to the door to customers leaving and demand more tip! I have never seen that in all my 30+ years it was shocking and amusing at the same time! "WOW" this must be the Chinese version of Ed Debevic's if so bravo! Won't give it one star because we haven't eaten here, but we arrived at 905 and we were informed it was closed. All of the chairs were already put up and they were cleaning which means they had closed up at LEAST 30 minutes early. We would've happily taken the food to go at 930, but saying it's closed at 905 when it's advertised as closing at 930 is terrible restaurant practice. Definitely won't be returning. The dishes are too salty. The place might be good for vegetable dishes, but the non-spicy meat dishes I ordered did not taste good.

If you want authentic Chinese, and none of that PF Chang's or Panda Express crap, you will love this place. Ambiance is OK, place is clean with lots of employees visible all the time. About 90% of the people that come here are Chinese, so you know it is good. The food comes out within 5-10 minutes after they take your order, much like any authentic Chinese restaurant. 4 stars for the food - love their Dry Chili Chicken, Kung Pao Beef, and their Spare Ribs. I love spicy Chinese food and I think this is really what they do best. 2 stars for the service - I asked the lady waiting on us if she could provide a recommendation, to which she replied, "Just order from the menu!" No asking if everything came out great, if you need napkins, or anything. Eat yo food and get the F out! Most Chinese restaurants value the food at a restaurant much more than the ambiance and service so the focus is really more on just how the food tastes. I'm not sure why this place has a 4-star rating but my experience was completely different. The food is mediocre at best and the service is even worse. The portions are big but the quality of food isn't any good. They seem to use a lot of oil and the food has no flavors to it. The service was awful, it was 9:30 on a Friday night and they started mopping the floor and removing chairs when there were still guests eating inside. Intense flavor!!! I have no idea if this is "authentic" Chinese cuisine or not, but it is a revelation. This is so different from the blandly sweet Chinese-American food all over the suburbs. A few favorites: 901. Mapo's Spicy Beef Noodle Soup. How can this broth be beefier than a fine steak? The spices are intense, but not overpowering. The noodles are rich and tender, but save room for... 824. Yu Shan Eggplant. This has a bit of that Chinese-American sweetness but with bold ginger and peppers. The eggplant melts in your mouth. 708. Country Style Smoked Pork. Imagine tender, smoked pork belly, thick sliced and tossed with leeks and the occasional thin slice of jalapeño. A bacon-lovers dream dish. This is only after exploring a tiny fraction of their menu. If I find more gems I'll post an update. read more

So we went back to Mapo which we have been to many times and ordered our sons fav dish the garlic chicken and it came out and was a completely different dish then we have eaten many times. Apparently the server said there's a new owner and the menu is not the same. Also everything on the menu is more expensive. I unfortunately want to like this restaurant, but fortunately I will not return. ATTENTION PEOPLE WITH FOOD ALLERGIES!!!!!! My 3 yr old daughter has allergies to egg and milk, so we frequent alot of Asian restaurants because unlike many other ethnic foods, Asians do not use cream, butter, milk, yogurt, etc. Occasionally, they marinade their meats in egg in order to tenderize them. When we asked the waitress if there was any egg in the meats, she said she didn't know and called the manager over. The manager said EVERYTHING was marinaded in egg. I said, C'mon, all the meats? She said yes without even checking with the kitchen. Every other Chinese restaurant I ever visit will make us some chicken fried rice without the egg, or vary the recipe as to not cause us to need an epipen. Don't tell me in the whole restaurant there is not a single unmarinaded chicken thigh or piece of beef. I've worked in them before. She just didn't want to go and get bitched out by the all-knowing Chinese chefs who would have told her to go to hell. I've worked in many Chinese restuarant kitchens before. I am Chinese and I like to eat, so you listen very carefully to what I am about to say- "MAPO RESTAURANT IS AWE~SOME!" No, I don't work for the restaurant, I am just someone who likes to share the good news with hungry people. Went there for the first time two weeks ago after I read about it on Yelp (thanks, Yelp!) My friend and I got the Mapo tofu with fish fillets, stir fry green beans, and the beef/scallion pancake rolls. The flavors were distinct and bold, thanks to the liberal use of garlic, chili peppers, and other spices. The services were good and the portion were generous. I brought home a Taiwanese lunch box for my parents and they loved it. Being an Asian American in the Midwest is not easy, most of the time I wish I am in LA feasting on authentic Chinese and Taiwanese food. But Chicago is definitely getting there as more and more authentic Chinese/Taiwanese restaurants are coming onto the culinary scene to answer the growl of our hungry stomachs. And with Mapo being so close to my work place, I know my cravings will never go unfulfilled again. read more
