He order the beef and rice with broccoli and the meat was COLD and very hard the chew. The only thing that he liked was the rice which was hot. He love the beef won tons because of the spicy chile. It was so upset that the soup had no flavor I put so much salt and also a pack of soy sauce which I never put soy sauce on anything I even Added the chile it look Like the cook took a bucket full of dirty wash water and served it to me the noodle had no flavor. The server was always on her phone. I asked her so many times to removed the dirty plates from the table and she completely ignored us. The ambiance was empty just a few orders to go. Our food wasn't ready but within 5 mins of us being there it was good to go. We tried the wonton soup and chicken dumplings app. Both were on the bland side. Almost everything at J's Kitchen could improve! The only reason I gave it two stars is for the sub-par but acceptable service. This was our first time here. Our first choice was House of Emporer, but quite fairly their prices are higher (see review and photos). We walked in and the restaurant was totally empty. We were walked to the seat the server assigned, but it was right by the window with glare. We asked for a table towards the back, and he said no, because he needed to stay up front. So we sat there. The menus were so stained and filthy that I would not touch them. My husband had to read me their very limited vegetarian options, which at other place is easily made vegan by the omission of eggs. It's not a pretty joint. There were boxes stacked near the entrance, the tables and chairs were pedestrian at best, and the decor wasn't (if you get my drift). In my experience, this signifies either the place was going to be a shithole to pass up, or it was a serious place to eat, then get out and go somewhere with an atmosphere. Happy to say J's (IMHO) is a serious place to eat. No-nonsense, direct and to the point. On to the food, know this place is a Serious REAL-DEAL Chinese resto. I didn't notice if there were "Occidental" Chinese-type dishes on the carte, (primarily 'cos I wasn't looking for them). What I saw looked yum, and had a hard time making choices, even though I had read the menu multiple times and thought I know what I was going to order in advance. Confessionately, this is a chief feature for my tortured dining self-It's a wonder I even get fed in restaurants (especially the great ethnic ones), due to option anxiety. I zeroed in on "Street Noodles" for starters-wouldn't you? Then went to "Cold Beef Shank" for entreé. The Noodles were fab as was the Shank. The noodles were in a broth. with some hunks of bok choy and ground meat on top. Hearty, still light. The shank had a thin sauce complimenting but not obscuring the beefiness. One bugaboo: the Shank needed a bit of seasoning, and I wasn't going to use soy sauce, as I believed that would have marred the subtle flavors of the Beef. I asked for a salt shaker. It arrived, and I was a little taken back, 'cos it appeared it hadn't been washed in a while, and the salt inside was caked. It occurred to me this condition was present due to the non-use of said shaker. I don't think I've ever asked for a salt shaker in a Chinese resto. I pulled a toothpick out of my "Murse" and broke up the caked NaCl. Applying same to the pieces of Shank, the flavor bloomed and I was a happy boy. We visited J's Kitchen expecting a Chinese dining experience, but our visit started off on an uncomfortable note. Upon arrival, the hispanic cook greeted us by saying, "I'm going to try to understand you guys," which came across as an assumption that we didn't speak English. That interaction felt off-putting and set a negative tone right away. (Very strange that a wanna be Chinese restaurant has never encountered an Asian person before and didn't know that one might be American and can speak perfect English.) We were also surprised to find that the restaurant didn't match our expectations of a traditional Chinese establishment, and the dining area was empty (no customers) during our visit. Given the initial interaction and overall impression, we ultimately chose not to stay. Highly would NOT recommend this FAKE Chinese restaurant. Family drove like 40min here to try the noodles - J's Kitchen is easy-to-find and park in a small cluster of stores. Upon entry, there's a sign of 5% off using cash. Service-wise - J's is excellent. They offered hot and cold water and were amazing at refilling it throughout the meal without interruption. They explained anything we asked, and honestly, they're ridiculously efficient and professional. Food-wise: Mom got the spring roll and tofu noodle soup. I couldn't try because I didn't want to chance her getting sick, but she said she liked it. My brother and I got the classic Spicy Beef Noodle soup - and it was pretty dang good. Mom remarked that it seemed like a small portion, and it kinda was but it was still enough. The noodles were thick and had the perfect chew - amazing! We wished there was more, but there was an adequate amount for what it was. The spicy beef noodle soup came with two pieces of beef - they're a little smallish but still adequate. One of my pieces was really good - tenderized and delicious. The other was a little too fatty (but honestly expected). The broth itself looked a little oily, but I didn't mind. And the spice level was good enough for me - nothing crazy if you like your throat on fire but definitely approachable by anyone who likes spice. We also tried the seasonal taro duck buns. I honestly didn't see that there was taro in the description so I was surprised to bite into the potatoe-y texture. So the outside bun is gorgeous - slightly sweet and crispy. The taro though, I think was good but doesn't work well with the duck. It makes the dish half-dessert/half-entree, and it's confusing to the tastebuds (at least mine). I would have definitely preferred just duck and buns even if it was smaller - and if they could alternate-layer the duck and dough, that would just be amazing. I can't fault them though as the quality of the food was good, and the value is also good. Just the concept itself may not be for me. Overall, really like J's Kitchen! It's far for us to come more often, but glad we got to try. The lunch special looks realllllly good, but yeah, we live too far to take advantage (lucky for you folks who do!). I thought this place was good. Signature beef noodle didn't disappoint. Nice flavors and fresh made noodles. Beef was tender and easily pulled apart. Also tried the Traditional Chongqing noodle which used very fine and thin noodles which I didn't care much for. For the little one, we did an order of the chicken lo mein, which was very good and I also enjoyed as they use fresh noodles. Probably the biggest disappointment was the smashed cucumber salad. Essentially just chopped raw cucumbers topped with a garlic-y sauce. I love garlic but it'd be nice if the cucumbers were marinated for a bit opposed to being served raw. Another great option for delicious noodles in the Naperville area. The restaurant is a pretty good size inside a fairly busy shopping center though you'll get served pretty quickly when you dine in here. Like much of Naperville, prices are a bit higher than in the Northwest Suburbs but it's in line with other Chinese restaurants in the area. The J's signature spicy noodle soup is pretty similar to the Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup that you'll find elsewhere. It is a flavorful broth that's not too spicy with fairly generously sized chunks of beef. Though there is Chinese greens, cilantro, and scallion inside this doesn't do too much to temper down the spice if you can't handle hot food. With that said, the mix is just about right for anyone with a low to medium spice tolerance and the noodles have a nice bouncy and slurpy texture to them. The sichuan diced beef stir-fry is probably a better option for those who can't handle too much spiciness in their food. Without a broth and mixed with lots of vegetables on top, this is more like the Vietnamese rice noodle salad except with a more savory sauce and noodles that are the same as the ones you'll find in the noodle soup. I found the beef in this one to be a bit more tender though it was cut into smaller pieces. On this visit I also tried the crispy chicken strips which I was hoping would be similar to dry chili chicken, but it was more like chicken karaage instead. It wasn't the best nor worst appetizer, but I was hoping for a bit more flavor. Overall, good choice for delicious noodles in a casual setting. read more

He also had marinated tofu. Tofu was very good but looks very different from our last visit. I had braised beef shank slices and Chongqing traditional street noodle. Both were very tasty. You can add amount of chili sauce to your preference. The bun is used to dip in the soup to absorb the rich flavor. I think they need to add a bit more bone broth to it so that it thickens a bit but other than that, it was a great bowl of soup. Wontons, rangoons, and others: All solid and definitely worth getting. A bit small for portions for the price though imo. Beef schezuan noodle soup: This was unexpectedly tasty. The beef was a bit tough though and I think it could've done better. The food itself was ok, I got the lunch special which comes with a main dish and a smaller portion appetizer, and a drink. For the main dish I tried the sichuan beef noodle. They weren't particularly spicy or that flavorful, the beef itself was tender and the the flavor wasn't bad, in fact the more I ate, the better it was, but it just wasn't what it was expecting, maybe they don't use tons of msg, salt, and sugar, like other restaurants and that might be the reason. Service was friendly and I ordered at the front and was able to sit anywhere. I love the noodles. They taste outstanding! Whether you order the spicy beef noodle soup or Beijing noodles, you're coming out on top. Quantity seems to be just right, but prices are a smidge high. Choose from noodles or a rice dish from the slim menu (definitely not flooded with options like other Chinese places). There was a free dessert with entree promo going on as well. This place offers various noodles from Asian countries and rice dishes as well . you can definitely find one thing you love If you have been a beef noodle soup fan, you may have visited Katy's dumpling house at Westmont. For beef noodle soup, they are delicious. Subtle differences - J's is more Taiwanese taste with more original beef flavor; Katy's is more like northern China flavor, stronger and spicier. All good... I'm happy to have either. Kids love Raman noodles as well as teriyaki over rice. Complimentary desserts were awesome too.
