Almost everything at J's Kitchen could improve! The only reason I gave it two stars is for the sub-par but acceptable service. This was our first time here. Our first choice was House of Emporer, but quite fairly their prices are higher (see review and photos). We walked in and the restaurant was totally empty. We were walked to the seat the server assigned, but it was right by the window with glare. We asked for a table towards the back, and he said no, because he needed to stay up front. So we sat there. The menus were so stained and filthy that I would not touch them. My husband had to read me their very limited vegetarian options, which at other place is easily made vegan by the omission of eggs. I wanted a simple fried rice, with mushrooms and bean sprouts, and was willing to pay an upcharge. Now, the part that no Chinese food lover will believe. THEY HAVE NO MUSHROOMS OR BEAN SPROUTS! I was in disbelief and we got up and left.
It's not a pretty joint. There were boxes stacked near the entrance, the tables and chairs were pedestrian at best, and the decor wasn't (if you get my drift). In my experience, this signifies either the place was going to be a shithole to pass up, or it was a serious place to eat, then get out and go somewhere with an atmosphere. Happy to say J's (IMHO) is a serious place to eat. No-nonsense, direct and to the point. When I walked in, all those common chairs I mentioned were stacked upside down on the tables in the way that places do when they are closed. The taciturn fellow who worked there assured me they were indeed open, and explained they had just finish washing the floor. Please dont read any of this as negative-the best Chinese places I've ever been have looked like this-and if you've paid attention to the Travel/Food shows on the TeeVee, the joints in China itself are pretty much the same. On to the food, know this place is a Serious REAL-DEAL Chinese resto. I didn't notice if there were "Occidental" Chinese-type dishes on the carte, (primarily 'cos I wasn't looking for them). What I saw looked yum, and had a hard time making choices, even though I had read the menu multiple times and thought I know what I was going to order in advance. Confessionately, this is a chief feature for my tortured dining self-It's a wonder I even get fed in restaurants (especially the great ethnic ones), due to option anxiety. I zeroed in on "Street Noodles" for starters-wouldn't you? Then went to "Cold Beef Shank" for entreé. The Noodles were fab as was the Shank. The noodles were in a broth. with some hunks of bok choy and ground meat on top. Hearty, still light. The shank had a thin sauce complimenting but not obscuring the beefiness. One bugaboo: the Shank needed a bit of seasoning, and I wasn't going to use soy sauce, as I believed that would have marred the subtle flavors of the Beef. I asked for a salt shaker. It arrived, and I was a little taken back, 'cos it appeared it hadn't been washed in a while, and the salt inside was caked. It occurred to me this condition was present due to the non-use of said shaker. I don't think I've ever asked for a salt shaker in a Chinese resto. I pulled a toothpick out of my "Murse" and broke up the caked NaCl. Applying same to the pieces of Shank, the flavor bloomed and I was a happy boy. Bring some salt packets along when you visit "J's", maybe. The fellow who was waiter and cashier was a "western" fellow, whom I engaged and turned out to be quite an experienced foodie. some pleasant conversation indeed. Throwing 4 for this excellent establishment, with a few grains of salt separating it from 5...
I'd give this place 10 stars if I could - I can't believe it's taken me THIS long to eat at this joint! We ordered SO much food because I just could not decide what I wanted. So here are all the things we ordered: Lamb Soup with Handmade Bun - the broth is clear, and mildly flavored. This is NOT for the folks who are looking for the fiery sichuan peppers. This is a comforting, homey type lamb soup that shines in its simplicity. The radishes in it add a nice bite, and the herbs it's garnished with add a fresh pop of flavor. The handmade bun is bland, but soft and chewy, and what you're really supposed to do is pull the meat off the bones, stick them inside the bun with the chilli crisp provided and you have a xian bing!!!! It was DELICIOUS! Chicken in Sichuan Sauce - for those looking for the fiery kick of sichuan peppers, this one is for you. Even then, it's relatively mild. But EXTREMELY flavorful. The sauce is not so much a sauce as it is a poaching liquid that pairs REALLLLLLY well with white rice. This was a delight to the mouth. Pepper Chicken Fry - this is more along the lines of the commercial Chinese food we ordered in its look and consistency, but the flavor was amazing and unique. My husband I absolutely loved it. The egg fried rice we ordered with it was simply divine! We also ordered the chicken dumplings, the filling is very plain but flavorful. And we also ordered the crab rangoons - the filling is delicious, not too sweet just perfect! The BEST part of the meal, for me, was the pot of green tea we ordered. It was the PERFECT accompaniment to our meal. Our server was super helpful, and answered all our questions with a smile! Please keep in mind that this is a Northern Chinese joint, I believe (correct me if I'm wrong), and the food is meant to be flavorful, not overly salty and spicy. This is exactly what I would expect out of a northern Chinese restaurant! Loved it! Definitely coming back over and over again!
The food here is so good, highly recommend trying this restaurant. The beef lo mein was our favorite, we also tried the stir fry pepper chicken and the meat was so tender and soft. We had the general tso chicken that just tasted okay but wasn't bad. The lunch special is only $15 for a huge amount of food, drink, and a starter (half size of a normal starter). Food came out super quickly. The restaurant is clean, spacious, casual, and they have high chairs available too.
Affordable lunch special at this location made it a good place for office team lunch. Clean with open kitchen concept. I got chicken lo mein with crab Rangoon and peach ice tea. The peach ice tea is the reason for an extra star in this review as it was extremely refreshing with lychee jellies on a hot summer day! The Lo Main was okay as the noodles could have done better with a little extra seasoning. The crab Rangoon had a soft center and crispy cover as expected.

We started off with the cucumbers and spicy wontons. The cucumbers were topped with a delicious savory garlic sauce. The wontons were yummy as well not super spicy but nonetheless delicious. My husband got the spicy beef noodles. The broth was so good. I can't remember what I got but it was beef on a bed of stir fry noodles and veggies. The beef was so good and tender. The noodles weren't that great. I stole some of my husbands broth and it helped. My daughter got the noodles with beef broth and it came with a spring roll and a side. She really enjoyed her meal. Overall it's definitely worth a stop.
The spicy beef noodles is my favorite and it's the best beef ever. I come for this noodle at least once a week. Highly recommended!
It's so nice to have a place where I can get spicy beef noodle soup not too far from home. Their noodles taste very fresh. I was impressed by the level of spice. It was hot enough to keep the dish interesting but not so spicy that my nose ran. We also had wings and some dumplings, which were tasty as well. The restaurant was clean and inviting. The staff was attentive. I am looking forward to going back. I would say I would try something different next time, but I'm a realist. I'll be going back for the soup.
Family drove like 40min here to try the noodles - J's Kitchen is easy-to-find and park in a small cluster of stores. Upon entry, there's a sign of 5% off using cash. Service-wise - J's is excellent. They offered hot and cold water and were amazing at refilling it throughout the meal without interruption. They explained anything we asked, and honestly, they're ridiculously efficient and professional. Food-wise: Mom got the spring roll and tofu noodle soup. I couldn't try because I didn't want to chance her getting sick, but she said she liked it. My brother and I got the classic Spicy Beef Noodle soup - and it was pretty dang good. Mom remarked that it seemed like a small portion, and it kinda was but it was still enough. The noodles were thick and had the perfect chew - amazing! We wished there was more, but there was an adequate amount for what it was. The spicy beef noodle soup came with two pieces of beef - they're a little smallish but still adequate. One of my pieces was really good - tenderized and delicious. The other was a little too fatty (but honestly expected). The broth itself looked a little oily, but I didn't mind. And the spice level was good enough for me - nothing crazy if you like your throat on fire but definitely approachable by anyone who likes spice. We also tried the seasonal taro duck buns. I honestly didn't see that there was taro in the description so I was surprised to bite into the potatoe-y texture. So the outside bun is gorgeous - slightly sweet and crispy. The taro though, I think was good but doesn't work well with the duck. It makes the dish half-dessert/half-entree, and it's confusing to the tastebuds (at least mine). I would have definitely preferred just duck and buns even if it was smaller - and if they could alternate-layer the duck and dough, that would just be amazing. I can't fault them though as the quality of the food was good, and the value is also good. Just the concept itself may not be for me. Overall, really like J's Kitchen! It's far for us to come more often, but glad we got to try. The lunch special looks realllllly good, but yeah, we live too far to take advantage (lucky for you folks who do!). We realllly appreciate the service again, and hope everyone gets to try the spicy beef noodle soup!
It was pretty inside, but we were able to be seated right away for 2 ppl. Got the fried dumplings with chili oil sauce to dip. The chicken was more like mince chicken, so it had a smooth texture like paste. It was a bit bland by itself, so definitely need to dip in that chili oil, which wasn't that spicy. The beef fried rice was really good and was stir fried well. Wasn't soggy or overcooked. Had great flavors. Had the N2. Signature beef noodle. At first it seemed like there isn't enough noodles, but there was a good amount. I think you can request for extra noodles. Flavors were great and I actually dipped the beef in the chili oil for the flavor. Noodles had that handmade texture and a bit of chewiness. It is a bit hidden and never knew it existed, until I was searching online for asian food in Naperville. Also there are plenty of parking spots.
I thought this place was good. Signature beef noodle didn't disappoint. Nice flavors and fresh made noodles. Beef was tender and easily pulled apart. Also tried the Traditional Chongqing noodle which used very fine and thin noodles which I didn't care much for. For the little one, we did an order of the chicken lo mein, which was very good and I also enjoyed as they use fresh noodles. Probably the biggest disappointment was the smashed cucumber salad. Essentially just chopped raw cucumbers topped with a garlic-y sauce. I love garlic but it'd be nice if the cucumbers were marinated for a bit opposed to being served raw. Anyways, come for the beef noodle. It won't disappoint. 'Til next time, cheers!
Ordered Chicken Fried Rice Spicy... Got the order see lots of Chilli Oil but it was Bland... Pinch of Salt would have made it better... Chicken was burnt and food was too oily
The food here was unique and tasty. Having smaller portions for the appetizers made it easier for me to try different ones from the menu. The restaurant itself isn't fancy and lacks décor. Tasty Tofu $6.25 - Crispy on the outside and silky on the inside. I would order these again. Crab Rangoon (4) $5.50 - Small but delicious. Pan-fried Chicken Dumpling (6) $6.95 - Tiny delicious dumplings. Sichuan Style Diced Beef over rice $16.25 - The beef were lean, tender and full of flavor! Shrimp fried rice $14.95 - Flavorful fried rice. Kung Pao chicken - $18 - This didn't taste like your normal kung pao. The chicken was breaded, deep fried and covered in a sweet sauce. I do not know what happen to this restaurant I took my other son because he loves Chinese food and I order the lamb soup again but with different noodles. He order the beef and rice with broccoli and the meat was COLD and very hard the chew. The only thing that he liked was the rice which was hot. He love the beef won tons because of the spicy chile. It was so upset that the soup had no flavor I put so much salt and also a pack of soy sauce which I never put soy sauce on anything I even Added the chile it look Like the cook took a bucket full of dirty wash water and served it to me the noodle had no flavor. The server was always on her phone. I asked her so many times to removed the dirty plates from the table and she completely ignored us. The ambiance was empty just a few orders to go. I feel SAD that I took an hour drive to be so disappointed at the horrible tasting food and also the bad service read more

J's Kitchen is in a strip mall which makes it easy to park and locate. They are small/locally owned and halal certified. I had a craving for wonton soup and thankfully J's has it. I ordered online for carry out and the platform was easy to navigate. Once my husband and I arrived at the resto we were greeted by a very kind staff member. Our food wasn't ready but within 5 mins of us being there it was good to go. We tried the wonton soup and chicken dumplings app. Both were on the bland side. Normally I'm used to wonton soup also having noodles and theirs does not. Flavors were OK, felt like both dishes were missing spices. Everything was cooked perfectly though. Maybe we ordered the wrong items from here and need to try others instead. read more

It's so nice to have a place where I can get spicy beef noodle soup not too far from home. Their noodles taste very fresh. I was impressed by the level of spice. It was hot enough to keep the dish interesting but not so spicy that my nose ran. We also had wings and some dumplings, which were tasty as well. The restaurant was clean and inviting. Another great option for delicious noodles in the Naperville area. The restaurant is a pretty good size inside a fairly busy shopping center though you'll get served pretty quickly when you dine in here. Like much of Naperville, prices are a bit higher than in the Northwest Suburbs but it's in line with other Chinese restaurants in the area. The J's signature spicy noodle soup is pretty similar to the Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup that you'll find elsewhere. It is a flavorful broth that's not too spicy with fairly generously sized chunks of beef. Though there is Chinese greens, cilantro, and scallion inside this doesn't do too much to temper down the spice if you can't handle hot food. With that said, the mix is just about right for anyone with a low to medium spice tolerance and the noodles have a nice bouncy and slurpy texture to them. The sichuan diced beef stir-fry is probably a better option for those who can't handle too much spiciness in their food. Without a broth and mixed with lots of vegetables on top, this is more like the Vietnamese rice noodle salad except with a more savory sauce and noodles that are the same as the ones you'll find in the noodle soup. I found the beef in this one to be a bit more tender though it was cut into smaller pieces. On this visit I also tried the crispy chicken strips which I was hoping would be similar to dry chili chicken, but it was more like chicken karaage instead. It wasn't the best nor worst appetizer, but I was hoping for a bit more flavor. Overall, good choice for delicious noodles in a casual setting. read more

Yummy yummy! I haven't find any place would serve that much meet and rice and everything else for such price. Taste really good too. I didn't think of taking a picture before we started to eat. The bowl was full filled and we enjoyed the meal. read more

Food was great, small whole in the wall places are usually good food and this was! The spicy wontons are living rent free in my mind since. The chicken and broccoli was tender and flavorful with the sauce I concocted. I'll be back! Oh and the lunch special is $15 for these dishes also. read more
This was unexpectedly delicious! I stopped by for a weekday lunch special and everything was absolutely great. I asked the waitress what she recommended for the lunch special, and she did not steer me wrong! I got chili oil wontons and for the entree, I got the dry beef noodles. Both were amazing. You get a drink on the side too, the lemon iced tea was delicious. read more

Went back to J's kitchen for lunch specials. Forgot to take photos this time. My husband tried Y2-lamb soup with handmade bun. Lots of lamb with bones(similar to pork neck bone style), turnip, and noodle(sweet potato glass noodle), came in a heavy pot to keep the food hot. He was very happy with his disk. He also had marinated tofu. Tofu was very good but looks very different from our last visit. I had braised beef shank slices and Chongqing traditional street noodle. Both were very tasty. Service was much improved than our last visit. Ambiance is still the same. Few more photos of the dishes or nice photos on wall would be helpful. There were several tables when we arrived after 1pm and good amount of take outs while we were there. Lunch special is one starter, one main, one drink for $15-great deal. Definitely will go back to try different dishes. read more
I stopped by Monday but they were closed. Came back on Wednesday to sample their dinner entrée. The Lamp Soup was super hot in a clay pot and the base was full of flavor and not salty. You can add amount of chili sauce to your preference. The bun is used to dip in the soup to absorb the rich flavor. Not so impressed with Cucumber Salad since it was not smashed to absorb all the favor from the garlic sauce. The Tasty Tofu was good but lack of presentation. Compared to the photo displayed at the dinning table, they almost look like different dish without the top garnishing. Super excited that the Naperville area is opening more Asian options!! J's doesn't look like too much from the outside (it's in a strip mall) but you won't be disappointed when you try it. I highly recommend The Spicy and Non-spicy Beef Noodle Soup options and the Chongqing Noodles. Theyre super delicious, and a good spice level. The food is fragrant and seasoned really well. I also love the beef and pork burgers. Honestly I haven't ordered a dish I didn't like yet! The staff is always friendly and I always enjoy eating here. The lunch special is a great deal. read more
Signature Spicy Beef Noodle: Solid noodle dish. Beef was tender and broth was good. Not amazing, but pretty good. The noodles taste hand-pulled and have a great chew to them. Over $13 for this dish is $1-2 more than I'm willing to pay. Chashu Ramen: The ramen is okay. This isn't really a Japanese restaurant, but their chashu is decent. It's tender and tastes legit. The noodles are pretty disappointing. $13, standard ramen price these days. You can get way better ramen, but maybe not in the Naperville area Sichuan Style Beef Burger: These beef rolls are pretty good. The dough tastes really... doughy. You know, that bready aroma? So good. The meat isn't the most tender, but it's well-seasoned. It's also $9 for two. Kind of pricey. The restaurant is very clean and well-kept. The waitress was very nice, and the staff seemed efficient. She asked us whether we wanted iced or hot water. read more

I really liked it. I really really liked it. There hasn't been a soup this close to what I wanted in Chicagoland since I've moved here. And for that I give it 5 stars. NOT BECAUSE ITS PERFECT but because its the best I can find in this category. Overall, I think its a solid bowl of heart warming, soul filling noodles that has a great texture and a decent broth. Let's get to the review: Food: 5/5 The spicy beef noodle soup is the star here. The meat is a great piece of shank (leg meat) that has some tendon, has some meat, has some gristle that is very much what you should get in a bowl of noodle soup. The noodles are super chewy and flavorful. The broth was....just okay. I wanted more there. If I could have some more of the schezuan spice in the bowl + a deeper broth flavor it would be awesome. I think they need to add a bit more bone broth to it so that it thickens a bit but other than that, it was a great bowl of soup. Wontons, rangoons, and others: All solid and definitely worth getting. A bit small for portions for the price though imo. Beef schezuan noodle soup: This was unexpectedly tasty. The beef was a bit tough though and I think it could've done better. If i mixed this broth with the spicy beef noodle broth and got the meat and noodles from there, it might be exactly what I want....not sure. Service: 4/5 They missed my wings :( I ordered it and they forgot. It's okay though because otherwise they were pretty attentive and I know I can lose some weight :D Ambiance: 4/5 It's not fancy but its good enough. Won't impress your date unless she's chinese and you're not asian and you want them to like you i guess? Oh their boba tea tasted so sweet and the boba was hard. I went because of the Yelp reviews. I wanted to try a few things so I got a few appetizers. The waitress was nice but thats where the good ends. I should have known being the only one in the place. I have no idea where all the good reviews came from. The pork belly burgers were VERY dry. After 2 bites I was done. The pork belly tasted old and leftover. The dumplings were fine but expensive for only a few. The wings are whole wings but had absolutely NO flavor...none...it was strange. The leftovers actually got thrown out. We need more places like this in the area. Traditional Chinese cuisine is served here instead of the typical Americanized Chinese stuff you find. Service was friendly and I ordered at the front and was able to sit anywhere. I love the noodles. They taste outstanding! Whether you order the spicy beef noodle soup or Beijing noodles, you're coming out on top. Quantity seems to be just right, but prices are a smidge high. Choose from noodles or a rice dish from the slim menu (definitely not flooded with options like other Chinese places). There was a free dessert with entree promo going on as well. The cheesecake was the winner. I'll be back and hope that some more things get added to the menu! read more
So happy to see this noodle shop popped at Naperville. Just opened about two months ago. I visited a couple of times already. This place offers various noodles from Asian countries and rice dishes as well . you can definitely find one thing you love If you have been a beef noodle soup fan, you may have visited Katy's dumpling house at Westmont. For beef noodle soup, they are delicious. Subtle differences - J's is more Taiwanese taste with more original beef flavor; Katy's is more like northern China flavor, stronger and spicier. All good... I'm happy to have either. Kids love Raman noodles as well as teriyaki over rice. Complimentary desserts were awesome too. Services were great too. definitely will be one of our lunch places in Naperville. read more

The service was quick and good. I heard the white server speaking Chinese with some of the other people who were eating. The food itself was ok, I got the lunch special which comes with a main dish and a smaller portion appetizer, and a drink. For the main dish I tried the sichuan beef noodle. They weren't particularly spicy or that flavorful, the beef itself was tender and the the flavor wasn't bad, in fact the more I ate, the better it was, but it just wasn't what it was expecting, maybe they don't use tons of msg, salt, and sugar, like other restaurants and that might be the reason. The appetizer, I tried the ny style chicken wing which came with sweet and sour sauce. It was good, it was deep fried so it was oily, but not too much. Because it was a wing, it didn't have that much meat on it. The drink I tried was the plum juice, it was smoky and sweet, and kind of salty, but not bad. The ambiance of the place is fine, it's quite spacious. read more

After coming here 8 times in less than 3 weeks (yeah, I really do love this place), I've eaten so many things that I already feel I should update my review. Sliced Pork: One of my favorites. The pork slices are so tender. Easy to eat with chopsticks. Served cold. I've ordered this for groups a couple of times and it was loved every time. Braised Beef Shank: Similar flavors as the pork. Served cold. Very good quality beef. Easy to eat with chopsticks. Another favorite. I always order either the pork or the beef starter. Fried Chicken Wings: My family absolutely loves these. My daughter is sometimes not in the mood for Asian flavors and asks for this as her meal. A whole plate of fried chicken wings for herself. Smashed Cucumber Salad: I just ordered this for the first time yesterday. Really nice garlicky taste. I like the cold crunch of the salad. Chicken Soup: Sometimes I order two of these and make it a meal. It's simple, but really good. Without any noodles, it's also an excellent choice if you're avoiding carbs (or gluten) as I often am. Pro Tip: Ask for chili oil to stir in. They have excellent chili oil. Ground Pork Soup: My favorite of the soups. Hard to call it a favorite when I still love the chicken soup, but I do tend to order this one more often. I definitely stir in chili oil. Yum Marinated Whole Egg: I'm addicted to these. With the faint taste of star anise, I could eat a bunch of these in one sitting. I order extras to put in my chicken or pork soup. Spicy Beef Noodle Soup: My go-to if I'm splurging on carbs and eating noodles. The beef is really tender. Easy to eat with chopsticks. Really great broth. Beef Noodle: All the same flavors as the spicy beef. Minus the spice. Perfect for a child or adult who can't handle a little heat. In my family, we can all handle the heat though. I start them young on chili oil. Teriyaki Chicken: A perfect choice if you're not brave enough to order the non-Americanized choices. It's really the only thing on the menu that everyone would be very familiar with. No matter your exposure to Asian food. The chicken is really tender and flavorful. Garlic Pork Rib: While the flavor is great, you have to be okay with eating the small bites, all with bone to eat off of. Asian is my favorite food by far, and this is the only Chinese restaurant I want to go to. I never feel sick after eating here. No fat laden greasy foods with sauces full of sugar.
