    The Vegetable With Fried Tofu
    Steve A.

Another hidden place for Asian cuisine. It's amazing what can be found when you look in some interesting places. Zen's Noodles is an overlooked place in Naperville, in the Hmart Asian supermarket. It has a counter to order at. This is a no frills place but it's a great value. Hmart is a good place to get Asian food and supplies for cooking. It has a food court featuring authentic items. They have a few stalls. In the middle are tables so you can eat right here. This stall has a counter to order at, so there's not much to it. Mostly meaty but there's a few vegetarian friendly items. The item I usually get is the Vegetable With Fried Tofu. It's about $8 for a good amount. The vegetables are a nice variety of a mix, and the tofu is plenty. For sure it's recommended to come to this big Asian market. It has many great things about it but the food court is the best part. The only bad thing is the market needs to clean tables.

Never had any issues with the dishes I've ordered. This time got the salt and pepper fish which are so crunchy with every bite. Also the walnut shrimp with the right amount of mayo. The size of the shrimp are pretty decent too. This is the spot to get some decent Chinese food.

Overall (B) It's your run of the mill Chinese food place. Note I got the Chinese lunch special - Sweet and Sour chicken. Did not try the pho. It was okay. Safe bet place if you work or go to school close by and want some Chinese food that is relatively inexpensive. Didn't have any left overs which I normally do. Feel like the quality of this food would be better suited in a college campus environment. Might have gone in with high expectations since the chicken place and the cup-bop place next to it are awesome. Like I'm never going to eat at this place ever again. The lunch special comes with 1. Main dish 2. Rice - the fried rice was pretty good 3. Crab Rangoon (cream cheese) or egg roll 4. Free drink It was around $11 with tax

Yum!!! What a little gem! I'm so glad I tried this place. I ordered pat thai, which was not very traditional but still super delicious. And my husband got lo Meir which was a hit as well! Fresh, not and huge portions. I can't wait to go back and try some other dishes!

I actually waited in the Korean line right next to Zen's for about 10 minutes before I realized something. 1) I hadn't checked Yelp to see what I was getting myself into and 2) The older ladies taking the orders were mean. I saw only two of them running back and forth, yelling at really confused customers before disappearing to their kitchen for minutes on end. But I digress. At Zen's I ended up getting the beef stew over rice with Chinese broccoli and for the most part, I really enjoyed it. This is one of those, the-food-taste-a-lot-better-than-the-service/atmosphere-kind of restaurants. They had some tea they made that was terrible and all of their sauces they offered were both low and just plain filthy. The kid was on his phone and earphones while he talked to you and the other customer standing in line. When I asked him for more chili oil, he filled the dirty bucket with just enough chili oil for me. BUT...The beef was incredibly tender. And while the rice tasted old, the beef was tender. Seriously, there's nothing worse than crappy beef. The Chinese vegetable that it came with was not cut into bite size portions. It was the equivalent as eating a full-size carrot. BUT...the beef was tender.

My parents and I come often to the Hmart food court whenever we are shopping there. Zen's Noodles is one of the options we constantly frequent. The most recent time we ate there was Sunday, Christmas Eve. There was lots of people in the food court but thankfully we were able to find seats right in front of the stall. We ordered the Pork with Szechuan Cabbage Noodle Soup as well as their fried rice. We were not informed by the cashier that we would have to specify that we wanted flour noodles in our noodle soup so they defaulted into giving us rice noodles. The flavor was pretty good but would have liked to have the flour noodles than the rice noodles. There was a good amount of toppings with the noodles but it would have been better if they soup was a bit less watered down than we were given. As for the fried rice, the flavor was very good. A bit oily but that really helped add to the taste. There was a good amount of toppings in the fried rice and we would definitely order this in a heart beat the next time we come! We also have tried their bbq duck over rice which is very delicious and a must try! The main issue we have with the restaurant, is that apart from the noodles which is served in a plastic bowl all of the other plates and small bowls are all styrofoam , it would be better if they could use plastic plates and small bowls as well.

A wide variety of noodles to choose from, and from the noodles of Vietnam, Taiwan, to Hong Kong. We had the Pho, Beef noodle, and fried kway teow and they were all tasty, big in portion and full of flavors. Each of the noodles were all good and flavorful, but they lack the distinctive local flavors of each noodles, such as the Pho broth is not as light and with a hint of zest that brings you to Vietnam. Theirs is more of a Canton burst of flavors version. This pretty much describes most of theirs dishes. I guess that's the down side of trying to provide everything to everyone. That said, we really enjoy this restaurant and their noodles and wide selections. A solid 3.5 performer but I cannot justify a 4 stars.

Very good red bean bun with egg yolk. Hard to find out here! Much more to my liking than the more sweet kind.

I'd rate it on par, or even better, than San Francisco's Burmese options. Service was much friendlier here, that's for sure! Tawk was a delightful host...making jokes along with dish recommendations. Sadly, we gobbled up the food before I remembered to take photos. D'oh! I highly recommend the Tea Leaf salad--a Burmese staple and a real treat if you haven't had it before. Very flavorful and just a hint of spice (don't eat the sliced peppers if you're spice-adverse, but we devoured them). We also had Shan Noodles (B8). I also recommend that. A mild to medium spice level and very tasty. Generous portions. Two dishes was enough for two though I wish we had tried the spring rolls or samosas too--we might have had leftovers if we had! The restaurant itself is inviting and clean. They did a good job considering the location in a strip mall. The lighting looks nice, and the textured walls add to the inviting ambience.

Pretty quiet for a Saturday night, however with nice music playing in the background I felt right at home. Rare to find Burmese restaurants outside of the West Coast. Naturally, the first thing I ordered was the tea leaf salad, followed by moh-hin-gar and nangyi dok with beef. All 3 dishes were delicious and I would order them again. There were a lot of vegan options too. I don't often think of the suburbs as a dining destination, but this was certainly worth the stop on the way back the city from West Chicago.

I was sold as soon as I saw that they pull their own noodles. Review done!…read more All jokes aside, my lunch was great today. I had dan dan noodles and soup dumplings. I was initially thinking about getting mala xiang guo a.k.a. dry hot pot, but thought I'd start with something I'm more familiar with. The place is adorably tiny, shoehorning 10 tables tops. I can see how some people might feel super claustrophobic, but I happen to like snug places. It was super charming imo. It was super weird when I walked in though. There were three tables of customers dining, but no staff to be found for a good couple minutes in the hall. I had to stand around, snooping behind the curtain to see if I can grab someone's attention from the back. A couple bus boys came out to grab drinks, but didn't say hi, or any sort of acknowledgment. Some folks would have thought this to be a red flag, but if you've been to enough traditionally Asian run places, this is nothing new. Doesn't bother me much. I ended up succeeding in grabbing the waiter's attention, who I think was in the back, packing a to-go order. C'est la vie. As I already mentioned, I sat down and ordered dan dan noodles and xiao long bao. I knew it was too much food, but the intention was to take home some leftover dumplings. So. Naturally, the noodles in dan dan were great! I generally love the chewiness of noodles and pastas when they're made fresh, and this wasn't any different. People generally expect the noodle to be medium-thin to medium, and this version was definitely more on the thicker side, which I didn't mind at all. Also worth mentioning is that Katy's version of dan dan is soup-based, not the traditional dry-tossed version. Personally, I enjoyed this version very much, especially because it was a very chilly, windy day in Chicagoland. The soup definitely helped warm me up. What I liked about the soup was that even though the brightly red nature of the soup's look gave me the impression it was going to be uber spicy and oily, it really wasn't. I found their mala profile to be greatly balanced to enjoy the slight numbness on my tongue, but without overpowering rest of other spices. The xiao long bao was good. I personally thought it could have used a tiny bit more soup filling, but I've definitely had my mouth burnt by scorching hot soup filling before, so it's a wash. I personally liked the slightly thick nature of the skin, but I can see how some people might not appreciate it. What I appreciated most was the taste balance of meat fillings. Whatever ingredients went inside did a great job of nullifying any meat stink, as well as elevated slight sweetness and savoriness. All in all, it was a great first impression. I'm definitely looking forward to coming back to try some other items.

We got the dumplings, scallion pancakes and the Dan Dan noodles. For the dumplings, the filling was juicy and full of big chunks of pork. I prefer the boiled version vs. pan fried. The skin was a little on the thinner side but still good. The Dan Dan noodles had a nice numbing spice and had a lot of ground pork. The scallion pancakes were cut into perfectly snackable sizes and were crispy and fragrant. Would highly recommend getting takeout from here or dine in. The takeout bag had sauces for the dumplings and lots of forks and chopsticks. There were no napkins in there so that was a bit disappointing. Lots of parking around the strip mall area.

We started with the triple delight pan fried dumplings and these were definitely a highlight. The bottoms had that perfect golden crisp while the tops stayed soft and chewy. Each one was juicy and flavorful, and you could tell they were made fresh. The chicken mini juicy buns were also really good. The wrappers were soft and delicate with a nice burst of broth inside, making them super comforting and easy to keep going back for. The pork belly gua bao was another standout. The bun was soft and fluffy, and the pork belly was tender and savory with a nice balance from the toppings. It was simple but really well executed. For noodles, we had the beef shank noodle soup with both beef shank and braised beef, and this dish was packed with protein. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the broth had a rich, savory depth that made it feel really hearty without being too heavy. We also tried the biang biang noodles. On their own, they were a little mild in flavor, but once we added some of the seasonings from the table like chili oil and sauces, it really brought the dish to life. I actually appreciated that you can customize it to your taste since they give you plenty of options. We got bubble tea as well, which was just okay. The flavor was good, but the boba itself wasn't as chewy as I usually like. Overall, everything felt fresh, portions were generous, and the pricing was very reasonable for what you get. The cozy atmosphere and variety on the menu make it a great spot to come back to and try more. Definitely a solid go to if you're in the area and craving dumplings and noodles.
