What their fried shrimp looks like. 2/3 AIR and 1/3 flattened shrimp. :(

Do you like paying for air? This is the place! My shrimp was 2/3 air and roughly 1/3 flattened shrimp! The chicken fried rice had ZERO chicken in it and was mostly filler of peas, and a ton on onions plus others. Shrimp egg roll had maaaaaybe 3 shrimp in it altogether. Mostly cabbage filler, yuck. Sesame chicken was tough to eat. It seemed microwaved and disgusting. Was swimming, and I mean swimming in sauce. A TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT!! Usually hit China Garden but wanted to try someplace different and this place was just awful. Definitely a ONE AND DONE restaurant. Only positive were the almond cookies.

This is what $53 of Chinese takeout looks like: fried rice, potstickers, pepper steak, egg drop soup, crab rangoon, egg rolls....

GENERAL TSO-TSO This spot in Bolingbrook has underwhelming Chinese takeout, but it'll do in a pinch. Upon moving to the area earlier this year, I did a quick search for businesses nearby and the results included a Buona Beef (hooray!), a landscaping supply company, and this neighborhood takeout place. Zen House is in a dinky strip mall off of Lily Cache & Weber Rd; they're carryout only, even in non-covid times. We called in an order on 12/4/20 and picked it up about 30 minutes later. Wonton soup ($3.25) and egg drop soup ($3) were fine, hot & sour soup ($3.25) was an amalgamation of the latter plus a bunch of mushrooms and didn't sit well with me. No more of that for this guy. The crab rangoon (8 for $7) were a tasty ripoff--100% cream cheese, 0% crab. Potstickers (8 for $7) come with a ginger soy dipping sauce and can be steamed or pan-fried by request. If you're feeding a group of 3-4, the Pao Pao combination is a good deal for $16 (2x each of egg roll, crab rangoon, bbq spare rib, beef teriyaki, chicken wing and shrimp toast). My Szechuan chicken ($11) was alright, nothing too special. My wife's pepper steak w/onion ($12) looked like it came from a different part of the same creature as my entrée, disguised in a dark sauce. You can upgrade white rice to fried rice for an extra $2. Some takeout places give out almond cookies with bigger orders, sadly ZH is not among them. Zen House does, however, hold the distinction of being the very first restaurant we ordered from on moving day (coincidentally, leftover Chinese was also the first thing my wife threw out of the new house's fridge). * TL;DR * For the money, you could do worse. You could of course, do better--Golden Bowl (Westmont) and New Star (Elmwood Park), par exemple. Sure, half of the pork/chicken/beef entrees here are mercurial in nature, and the unnaturally vibrant sweet 'n sour sauce is nothing more than corn syrup + red dye...... but aren't those things part of the reason why Chinese takeout is so timeless? Zen House is average in that regard, they're not shattering any barriers. We'll likely order from them at a point in the future, if only because of the convenience of proximity.

ANCIENT CHINESE SECRET…read more Terrific takeout is often the result of magical MSG. MSG (monosodium glutamate), or 'make sh*t gooood', is a flavor enhancer many restaurants use to amplify savory dishes to a level generally only experienced by eating Chinese takeaway. Most kitchens of this ilk are stocked with plenty of this miraculous white crystalline powder, and I doubt Garden China is any different. This small spot on Route 53 in Bolingbrook offers carryout, delivery, and dine-in, although I can't picture a single soul who'd opt to stick around here instead of bringing home their haul of Hunan chicken. I've placed online orders and they've been ready at or before the scheduled time. The appetizer combo ($17) is a good value: 2 crab Rangoon, 2 fried wontons, 2 beef teriyaki, 2 fried shrimp, 2 chicken wings, and 2 egg rolls. The wings didn't get eaten, but everything else was consumed with haste and they reheated splendidly in the air fryer the next day. I would've liked hot mustard or duck sauce for dipping. My wife loved the wonton soup ($8 for a large) even though she grouses about it heating unevenly--the broth gets scalding hot while the wontons are still cold. Their egg drop soup ($8 for a large) is maybe the best I've ever had, plenty of whirled egg and green onion without any nonsense like corn or mushrooms. They keep it simple and it's quite literally perfect. The kung pao chicken ($11) is also one of the best I've had in recent memory, due in part to the overall flavor but also because of the ingredients. Sometimes kung pao chicken means 90% crap and 10% actual chicken. Not the case at Garden China; they add proportional amounts of celery, carrots, onion, green peppers, water chestnuts, baby corn, peanuts, and plenty of white meat chicken in a tasty sauce. And to top it off, it was much cheaper than other places nearby (Zen House charges $17!) * TL;DR * It's unfortunate that Golden Chopsticks closed in late 2022, but I'm thankful to have Garden China as our new go-to. Garden China has some sneaky-good menu items, notably the egg drop soup (which HAS to be loaded with glorious MSG) and the kung pao chicken, which is just spicy enough and loaded with a great variety of veggies. We will absolutely order takeout again from here!

Fast service! Great prices! Average food…read more I ordered eggrolls and a small chicken lo mein. Somewhat commented that the egg rolls were about the size of spring rolls. Not true. Average egg roll. Crispy and stuffed. The small chicken lo mein was enough for anyone. It was a good size portion. I went in and ordered at the restaurant. My food was delivered in five or six minutes. The service was quick and courteous. I will go back. There's only a couple of booths if you think you're going to eat in. This is a pick up and go type of restaurant.

Tried this place for the first time on Jan 2nd. Ordered a take-out online. The first thing I…read morenoticed was, during the checkout process, the form asked for a tip, and had 20% checked as a default. 20% for what??? Handing me a bag? I got kung pao beef and a couple of other things. The "beef" in the kung pao was so fatty and chewy I could literally not eat it. I kept trying, but it was EVERY PIECE in the container. A total loss. I called to let the restaurant know. The woman who took the call assured me my card would be credited the amount of the item. This was outright FRAUD, as my card was never credited for this food I could not eat. She also said the manager would call me back, which also did not happen. Bad enough the food was inedible, but blatantly lying to me was way over the line. The rest of the items were on the bland side, and I'm not sure if I would have come back. But after what happened, I'm avoiding this place like the plague. I cannot afford to literally throw my money in the garbage.

It's across the street from Arby's in a small strip mall. You'll definitely have to make a U-Turn because getting into the lot is weird. Plenty of parking since it is a shared lot. We decided to do two combo meals plus the aristocrat chicken. When dining in, there are about 4 tables so it can be limited if there is a rush hour. The owner was very pleasant and he explained about the items before we looked at the menu. Lumpia was crispy and tasty. Garlic rice was a little oily but still good. Overall, it's about a 4. I would have given them a 5 but that rock hard crispy kare kare is hard to forget. However, I'll return to try other items. -crispy kare kare with garlic rice and lumpia 3 - I wanted to like this but the crispy kare kare was a huge let down. It was very tough to eat. I've had Filipino food many times and it was never this hard. It's a shame because the peanut sauce with the veggies and eggplant were delicious. -bbq pork belly (liempo) with garlic rice and lumpia 5 - I really liked the BBQ pork belly. Very easy to cut with a spoon. Meat was well seasoned. It is fatty, so it's best to eat it with rice. -aristocrat chicken 5 - highly recommended. Chicken is extremely flavorful even for leftovers. Meat is very moist and juicy. Nice balance of sweet and salty. I should have gotten the 10 pieces.
