ANCIENT CHINESE SECRET Terrific takeout is often the result of magical MSG. MSG (monosodium glutamate), or 'make sh*t gooood', is a flavor enhancer many restaurants use to amplify savory dishes to a level generally only experienced by eating Chinese takeaway. Most kitchens of this ilk are stocked with plenty of this miraculous white crystalline powder, and I doubt Garden China is any different. This small spot on Route 53 in Bolingbrook offers carryout, delivery, and dine-in, although I can't picture a single soul who'd opt to stick around here instead of bringing home their haul of Hunan chicken. I've placed online orders and they've been ready at or before the scheduled time. The appetizer combo ($17) is a good value: 2 crab Rangoon, 2 fried wontons, 2 beef teriyaki, 2 fried shrimp, 2 chicken wings, and 2 egg rolls. The wings didn't get eaten, but everything else was consumed with haste and they reheated splendidly in the air fryer the next day. I would've liked hot mustard or duck sauce for dipping. My wife loved the wonton soup ($8 for a large) even though she grouses about it heating unevenly--the broth gets scalding hot while the wontons are still cold. Their egg drop soup ($8 for a large) is maybe the best I've ever had, plenty of whirled egg and green onion without any nonsense like corn or mushrooms. They keep it simple and it's quite literally perfect. The kung pao chicken ($11) is also one of the best I've had in recent memory, due in part to the overall flavor but also because of the ingredients. Sometimes kung pao chicken means 90% crap and 10% actual chicken. Not the case at Garden China; they add proportional amounts of celery, carrots, onion, green peppers, water chestnuts, baby corn, peanuts, and plenty of white meat chicken in a tasty sauce. And to top it off, it was much cheaper than other places nearby (Zen House charges $17!) * TL;DR * It's unfortunate that Golden Chopsticks closed in late 2022, but I'm thankful to have Garden China as our new go-to. Garden China has some sneaky-good menu items, notably the egg drop soup (which HAS to be loaded with glorious MSG) and the kung pao chicken, which is just spicy enough and loaded with a great variety of veggies. Fast service! Great prices! Average food. I ordered eggrolls and a small chicken lo mein. Somewhat commented that the egg rolls were about the size of spring rolls. Not true. Average egg roll. Crispy and stuffed. The small chicken lo mein was enough for anyone. It was a good size portion. I went in and ordered at the restaurant. My food was delivered in five or six minutes. The service was quick and courteous. I will go back. There's only a couple of booths if you think you're going to eat in. This is a pick up and go type of restaurant. read more

I have been looking for a good Asian spot since I moved to the area 7ish years ago. Of All the places I have tried in Bolingbrook/Romeoville this is hands down the best tasting. Orange chicken doesn't give you heartburn and has flavor. The pineapple chicken, beef is not chewy, hot n sour soup and ragoon on top of many many others dishes I've tried. I have absolutely no complaints and let me tell you with Asian food the bar is set high. The place is small for dine in but I prefer pickup and dine at home. read more

Ordered 2 dinners total was $31.00, paid and extra 2 dollars for chicken fried rice and it had maybe 3 mini pieces of chicken in the plain, tasteless, hard rice. 2 spoonfuls had a crunch in it another spoonful had a long strand of something so I was done with the rice. The general tso chicken was very hard and not edible. Totally disgusting, I threw the whole tray away as it gave me the same impression as the nastiness of the restaurant. First time I ate here it was so good. lots of meat on the combination fried rice. Second time not so much meat, specially chicken and the pork. barely pieces in there. Shrimp was ok but not as much as the last time. Third time just got worse. This time not only not enough meats but also the rice was tasteless. Not too long ago, I had a massive fight with the mister about how the area we live in has no good Chinese food places. Now, in my defense, I'm from California and good Asian food is on every street corner - I told him I had desperately been looking for "my Chinese takeout" place - one you call and order from again and again and again. Well, after years of looking, I think I've finally found it!!! We ordered on a whim from this place, and boy, it did not disappoint! So here's a breakdown of what we ordered. Crab Rangoons - these arrived incredibly hot and fresh, and boy did they taste amazing. Little triangles of goodness; usually I don't like my foodstuff to be too sweet, and these are definitely on the sweet side, but they are oh-so-good for whatever reason! Hot and Sour Soup - I ordered a small size of the soup, and I'm glad. Although the tofu in the soup was perfect, and the other ingredients seemed to all be there, the actual base of the soup had too much soy sauce. It wasn't an awful taste, but the soup was mediocre at best. Vegetable Chow Mein Fun - oh boy, this may have been one of my favorite items we ordered! Soft, slippery, well seasoned noodles tossed with egg, and various veggies. Wonderful flavor, and cooked to perfection! Shrimp Fried Rice - these tasted good, but again, tossed with a tad too much hot sauce. The texture of the rice was good, and you could tell it was freshly made, but the addition of the soy sauce detracted from the fresh flavor. Hunan Shrimp (Spicy) - my absolute favorite part of our order. The sauce was delicious, and tossed with snap peas, baby corn, water chestnuts, green onions, broccoli, carrots, celerity and onion...this dish was absolutely delightful. What I loved best was that despite all these veggies being added to this entree, there were still plenty of shrimp, and the veggies weren't all soggy, and each had its own texture and crunch which was preserved during the cooking. The celery still had the crunch, the snap peas still had the bite; all of it had a delightful mouth-feel. General Tso's Shrimp - ahhh, the dilemma. Here's the thing, the actual sauce was amazing, and the flavor of the shrimp and the breading on the shrimp were absolutely scrumptious, however, there was way too much breading/coating on each shrimp, making it almost impossible to enjoy the taste of the actual shrimp. Despite the objections, this was a pretty big hit with both the mister and me. Lastly, I'd like to conclude that it's clear that they aren't perfect - but the delivery took place before the projected time, the food was all fresh and tasted pretty darn good, and the order taker (and the delivery guy) was really courteous! Where to start... ordered take out here a week ago. Had the shrimp Lo mein. Woke up early the next morning feeling like I was dying. After 4 agonizing days of explosive bloody diarrhea, excruciating headache, fever and the most painful stabbing cramps and abdominal pain... Stool samples submitted.... campylobacter jejuni. For those of you who don't know what that is... It's a bacteria that is found in contaminated food like meat poultry and seafood. It is also a bacteria that the lab is required to report to the CDC for contact tracing. After losing a week of work, and ruining my Christmas, I am on my 2nd round of antibiotics. Please do not eat here. This was one of the most awful painful experiences. read more

Great food at a great price. The pot stickers and crab rangoon are super reasonable and fresh and tasty. I've tried a few of the normal stuff that you can expect: Sweet and sour pork, beef chop suey, pork fried rice. Everything is hot and great. Big whole pieces of meats and perfectly cooked vegetables. The lunch special is a must-try. For about 5 bucks you get a big bowl of pork fried rice topped with an entree with either a soup or can of soda and an egg roll. Some other places use a cheaper variation of the fried rice for the lunch special, but not here. I usually get the Mongolian Beef lunch special with wonton soup. Most times I throw in an order of crab rangoon! They're super fast too. I walked in once to order and the guy in the kitchen started cooking my order seconds after I finished ordering. read more

Portion sizes are smaller and less of everything in the dishes. Went there twice since new owners thinking was just a bad day but the second time was worse. hi! I hate being rude on yelp, BUT when I ordered my Chinese food a week ago, I didn't order a pubic hair in the bottom of my dish. 1. I repeated my credit card number to her 6 times, and she repeated it to me multiple times as well. I asked her to charge the card $7 and she continuously charged it for $25. I only had $10 in my card and so I asked for $7 to be on it for the tip only. the total was $18 for the meal and she expected a $25 dollar tip. that's not how it works. 2. I got general tso's chicken and it tasted like fish. 3. the lady on the phone was so rude, it made me feel uncomfortable. 4. I started eating my food, rolled the 'chicken' to the side and found a short, curly, pubic hair. no one in my house has short dark hair. and I know what a pubic hair looks like, and that was it. SO, with that said, don't eat here. if you have any issues, they won't hesitate to throw a pubic hair in your food. never gonna order from here again. next time just gonna go to golden chopsticks. read more

I randomly found this restaurant through my Yelp app, it's not too far from where I work and I am so happy with my decision to try them out. I ordered from here at least five times. I have not been disappointed. The food is tasty, hot and well packaged to take home. A few times I have eaten inside at one of the small tables. It was fun listening to the crew working and communicating in Chinese! Had delivery one time. Was super fast, I was surprised when the driver rang my door bell. I like the house egg foo young, egg drop soup, crab rangoon and egg rolls are real good. I did not like the fried rice though, it was kinda dry the time I ordered it. Overall.. Being in the neighborhood, and seeing four stars, I thought it worth trying. While we were unaware the restaurant was primarily a take-out place, it doesn't impact this review. We'd planned for takeout anyhow -- though readers should note it's not a dine-in sort of restaurant. I give it two stars primarily because everything we ate was unremarkable. All the food was okay, but not much better than that. "Okay" is oddly the right word. The Mapo Tofu wasn't authentic, but it filled a stomach. The Szechuan beef was similar. The fried rice was good. I felt a bit misled by the reviews without any specific complaints other than the food is fine, passable, forgettable. You can do better. read more

So glad I happened upon this place through Yelp last night! The restaurant is mostly it's large, open kitchen, designed primarily for take-out. The food was clean and fresh. THEY CHANGED HANDS!!!! THE FOOD IS GARBAGE NOW!!! I ordered $61.59 worth of food. The pork egg foo Young USED TO BE full of chunks of bbq pork, vegetables, light fluffy & you got 3 large patties for $4.99. They're now $5.99, you only get 2 and there are SPECKS of pork, no veggies like carrots or peas, just that watery tubelike stuff with egg. It was cold and wet and the most disgusting thing I've had in years. The spareribs are microwaved!!!! The sesame chicken is a sliver of chicken that's surrounded by 5 layers of coating. The coating is so thick only the outside cooks and the coating closest to the sliver of chicken is mush!!! The beef & broccoli was a damn shame. The beef was tender, the broccoli was nice......the gravy/sauce had zero flavor. The quart of wonton soup had 5 wontons in it. It was super salty. The spring rolls were so dripping with grease & oil, we had to wrap them in 3 papers towels just to get most of the oil out. The rest of the food was horrendous. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS!!! They used to be a great place, they are HORRIBLE now. I'm heartbroken over this. read more

The food is pretty good at a great price. Its a hole in the wall located in the same strip mall as wal-mart but don't let the outside fool you. 3.5 stars would be my rating of this place. Mongolian beef is great but they could use a little more meat in the dish. Sweet and sour Chicken is good and fried rice is pretty decent here as well (both chicken and vegetarian). Kung pao chicken is probably the best chicken dish I've tried from them. I would NOT recommended the orange chicken. read more

I'm not really the kind of person to make a review about food service, but as someone who works in the customer service industry, I was extremely disappointed by how they treated a paying customer. I called to place an order for my lunch break. Was told that the lunch special had expired by about 20 minutes and couldn't match the price for the lunch special. So I said I was okay paying the extra 2 dollars for pretty much the same meal. All was well at this point, then the girl asked me if I knew the delivery charge would be 5 dollars because I was on the border of their delivery range. I said yes that's fine. Then this is when I started getting upset. The girl was speaking to another person working there (I assume a manager) and said to me that she was being told they don't even want to take my order because it's not a bigger order. She went on to explain that they only have one driver at the moment and they didn't want to upset other customers who were ordering bigger plates than I was by making the driver travel further away and making the other customers wait. I was livid by what she was saying to me. I went on to say that I am still a paying customer and was paying for the same service as everyone else. Which she then said they would rather make more people happy by not having them wait for their food then to make one person happy that isn't ordering something big and making the driver travel further away. At this point I was disgusted by how they were treating the situation and said I didn't want any of their food for the fear of them doing something to it even if I did buy more. I don't know if these were new people working there or not but I have ordered from here before and didn't have this issue but this experience left a bad impression and I will no longer order from here. This user to be our go-to place for Chinese, but recently the food has been different. My standard of excellence has always been Yu's, in Schaumburg. I'm soooo picky about Chinese food, so it was fabulous to have a terrific place so close to us with great prices. It's not horrible, but it's not what we were use to getting from here. We will be looking at the other local joints to see if we can find something we enjoy more. Such a shame. read more
