Excellent. BBQ sauce is perfect amount of tangy and sweet with a deceptive spice on the back end. Had the perfectly-fatty and rich Burnt Ends with hearty smoked beans (a combination of textures and flavors), roasted sweet potatoes and simple, no-bells and whistles Mac and Cheese. Delicious comfort food. They offer fresh baked cookies and cornbread individually wrapped at the register. Cornbread was moist with whole kernels and the Chocolate Chip Cookies were a great balance of salty and sweet. They also carry Virgil's sodas, Jamaican Ginger Ale, and craft beer in bottles and cans. It's an unassuming place that offers some of the best barbecue on the island. The service was friendly and hospitable. I am so happy to find this place. My husband and I used Maple Tree Catering for a casual post-wedding reception in October on the water in Long Island. We wanted an upscale BBQ atmosphere with seriously good food. We do not live in the area and planned the event pretty quickly so we could not do a pre-tasting of the food. The food turned out fantastic. I would not have changed a thing. As guest arrived the got walked onto a patio where they had set up a raw bar with the freshest, tastiest oyster, clams and shrimp. Our guests really didn't know what kind of BBQ they were going to get so this set the scene as they all realized they were in for a night of great food. We could not have been happier with the service. Both Kevin & his wife were so professional and accommodating. They made sure everything was taken care of and all our needs were met. Leading up to the party they were extremely responsive, taking care of all requests and were not phased by anything. They came into the venue that we picked and arranged everything so beautifully. The bartender and staff were extremely pleasant and made our guests feel like they were at a 5 star restaurant. Now back to the food. WOW, as good as it gets! The BBQ was insane - so fall off the bone, lip smacking, my mouth is watering right now delicious. We had brisket, pork shoulder, ribs, & chicken. They were all exceptional. The baked beans were off the hook and they made them vegetarian for our guests. That with cornbread, grilled veg, and potatoes made them all very happy. For desert we went with their pineapple upside down cake which we heard was really good. It was excellent. I can't say enough about how happy we were using Maple Tree. Wow Wow Wow that's sums it up.I been to maple tree BBQ maybe 8 times now and the food is always been excellent ,but tonight wow I probably had the best pastrami on rye that I've ever had.It was phenomenal, if you've not been to Mapletree BBQ you need to get down here ASAP. also the barbecue beans are great, the beef brisket excellent and great ribs everything he has is excellent. read more

Ok, so I need to try this place again I'm sure. First off the bat, if you park across the street at the riverside be careful crossing that road - it's ridiculous - people drive pretty fast and the pacing of traffic seems to never end! I came with a friend and we were waiting nearly 10 minutes (seriously, it was a bit absurd) to run across. People who can't hustle might want to be sure to park on the same side of the street as the restaurant. I don't hold this into my rating, but just to be aware. Inside, it's very eyes-on (as good BBQ should be) where you can really check out your meat before selecting your options. When we went, there were only a few other people inside eating and a few staff but it seemed a little unorganized. We weren't greeted (after spending a while in the front) and had to ask about sitting down. There are some great specials here on the chalkboard, including seafood! I think it would have been a much better experience if the staff had invited us over to check out the selections and discussed what to get, but instead it was all semi-awkward as if their server was off that day and the dude behind the counter simply had to be there. Ended up getting the pulled pork, and I realize North Carolina is tart and tangy but this was also somewhat dry. The cornbread was good but I don't think you can make bad cornbread (or if you can, you have no business being behind the stove) and the honey butter definitely helped. Baked beans? Meh. I don't know, I must have been missing something... I want to like this place so much more than I did. Really I want to order every single thing they have available because: BBQ - but I can't and when the stuff I get isn't that great, it's a bummer. It's a drive, so hopefully when I'm back in the area, I'll make another stop and update with a +2 correction. Learn from my mistakes, Yelpers: hang out at the meat-counter and force them to talk to you even if nobody seems particularly forthcoming at first. I was actually on my way to another deli located through my gps when a big sign that said BBQ caught my eye and made me stop (yes, if you ever need me to pull over, just hold a sign that says BBQ in front of me). The deli appeared to be just an average Long Island deli, except that they boasted a small selection of BBQ smoked meats alongside the normal deli fare. Always looking for good BBQ, I ordered the pulled pork on a hero with cheddar and onions. *Warning - unless you've got a HUGE appetite, if you get a hero, ask to have the halves wrapped separately* They provide riverside picnic tables across the street from the deli to sit and eat at. The sandwich was very smoky, but I still enjoyed it, both for lunch and dinner. It was also much messier than I anticipated, and I was glad that I had nowhere else to go after eating there because my shirt was a mess after eating half the sandwich. Parking and having to walk across the busy street is tough and takes forever, but it's well worth the wait. Eventually drivers will feel bad and let you cross. When you do get in, you're immediately hit with the smell of smoke and you know you made the right decision. I honestly don't think you could go wrong with anything here. We came here to get some take-out to feed a bunch of us, and Maple Tree BBQ worked out perfectly. We ordered a slew of things, the pastrami, brisket, ribs, mac-n-cheese, creamed spinach, cole slaw, and of course the corn bread. Overall, food here was really good. The meats were nice and tender, and the au jus that they add with the meats really adds to the flavor and moistness. The pastrami was tasty with the addn of the horseradish sauce, and the brisket worked well with the bbq sauce. The ribs may have been a touch overcooked. Out of the sides, the highlights were the creamed spinach and corn bread. The mac and cole slaw were good. If you are looking to feed a large group, go to Maple Tree. read more

The food at Maple Tree is excellent. Portions are very generous and the staff is friendly. The pulled pork is one of my favorite dishes. They do catering around the island at events like the North Fork Beer Festival. The cornbread and homemade butter are scrumptious. I try to stop by the deli every time I head out east. I'm going to review the food, because we got take out on Sunday. Wow! This was the best Bar-B-Que food that I've tasted in a long time. The meats have excellent, succulent smoke flavor without all the sugary syrup bar-b-q sauce. I got a combo-meat platter and the meats were big portions. I couldn't finish it all. The mac-n-cheese is fantastic, creamy and cheesy. You can't go wrong with this side. We had the Southwest salad with Chipolte dressing. Again, this was a home run, with fabulous tastes and crispy lettuce. We all had corn bread (3 of us) and there was none left afterwards. It was so good, light and tasty (not sticky and thick), that we wished we had ordered more. The prices are reasonable, the owner and staff are very nice and helpful when placing an order. So nice and accommodating too, this was a custom order not on their menu, but they didn't hesitate and it was very inexpensive. Maple Tree BBQ catered a recent event that I attend at Martha Clara vineyard. I made myself a pulled pork slider with caramelized vegetables. The pork at the bottom of the pan was juiciest and very tender. The veggies were soft and sweet but were a bit cold. I think the vegetables should have been serve in a heated tray like the other items. I also tried the Mac n cheese, but I found it to have a bit too many bread crumbs for my liking. read more

Stopped here after a Yelp search driving back from golfing with 5 other buddies. I could make a strict case for a 4-star review but I'm sticking with 5. The owner was very friendly, the place was clean and comfortable and the food was on par with some of the best BBQ I've tasted (Fette Sau, Mable's, Hill Country, Mighty Quinn's, Briskettown, etc). Not better than those places, but in the discussion. Tried or tasted with great approval - brisket, North Carolina pulled pork, smoked wings, smoked chicken, smoked chicken and vegetable soup and the killer pastrami (went home with 2 pounds of it after dinner). Baked bean side was different but delicious. Strangely enough, the Mac n cheese was mediocre. Lots more on the menu to try so if I'm ever near Riverhead, I'm coming back without a doubt. read more

No stars. I used to eat here all the time last year. Spent the morning telling my co-workers how good it is - and was EXTREMELY let down when we went for the lunch. We all got different sandwiches... Came on stale dried out rolls. One piece of cheese on an $11 sandwich. The chicken didn't taste like the Alabama sauce. The brisket sandwich has a few scraps of brisket. The corn muffin is dry and unflavored. Overall disappointed and won't be eating there ever again. Used to be my favorite. Not anymore. Also, they didn't give me my side of pickles. I've been a dine-in customer for a year or two at Maple Tree and have always loved the fresh options in the store and how incredibly delicious the food was. The staff has always been friendly and accommodating. At one point, we were even offered to try something "they were working on" that wasn't on the menu yet -for free! We recently decided that we wanted to share our love for their BBQ with our family and friends and chose to get some items catered for our 4th of July bbq. Dennis who handled our order was very helpful and guided me toward making menu choices which we truly loved. We had the perfect amount of food with his reccomendation and our guests all raved about how amazing everything was. We chose the ribs, smoked chicken wings, mac n cheese, crushed potatoes, baked beans and corn bread. The food was hot and ready when we picked it up and stayed hot in their provided catering box for hours. They provided paper goods for no cost too. We waited a bit too long to serve the mac n cheese and much of the cheese sauce had been absorbed. That was disappointing, but when we spoke to Dennis about it the next day, he was already proactively figuring a better way to avoid that in the future. We also had a bit of a spill of some of the juices from the trays in the car we used to transport the food, but that was likely due to placement of the catering box in the car. The following review is for wedding catering! Maple Tree BBQ made our wedding unbelievable. The perfect rustic wedding caterer. If you want something different, something that will wow your guests and something that the bride and groom will make sure to carve out time to sit down to eat... It is Maple Tree BBQ catering! My husband and I were so bored of the standard seated dinner menu. We wanted a comfort food buffet, items that were familiar but not traditional for a wedding. From the beginning of the process Kevin made us feel very comfortable. He is intense at first, but you quickly realize that this is an excellent trait when you need a job well done. He knows the event and catering business like the back of his hand. The Maple Tree restaurant in Riverhead is small, but always crowded and you can tell that patrons love the food. Read some reviews and go there! I stopped in the first time with my parents (after giving Kevin a call) and Kevin made time to sit with us and discuss ideas. He also gave us sample plates of dishes he would recommend. From there, we corresponded via email and telephone to come up with the cocktail hour menu and buffet dinner. Kevin was very open to our ideas and how he could help customize things to make everything perfect. Of course, please defer to Kevin on the food... he is an excellent Chef. Not only is Kevin a Chef, but he has years of experience running high end banquets and affairs in NYC, so he gives you guidance on timeline, setup and everything in between. Couldn't have been a more knowledgeable resource during the planning and execution. I was doing a number of DIY projects and picking up different decor items that I wanted to incorporate such as platters in our colors to be used as passing trays, rustic elements for displays, and bamboo plates for cocktail hour... Maple Tree was happy to incorporate and bring other rustic elements to the table as well. You don't often find that in a caterer, they were flexible and it streamlined the process. The food was very important to my husband as well, so we went to visit Kevin again to taste the items we discussed. My husband, of course, loved everything and recognized how helpful, organized and intuitive Kevin was during this meeting. We were sold! Drink a Dixie beer, serve it at your wedding. It was a crowd favorite and works so well with the food. The day before our farm wedding in Calverton, Kevin and Sharon met us at the venue. We walked through all of the details and I could not have felt more confident that everything would be seamless on the day of our event. Sharon has an eye for design and for details. She came up with some great ideas for our layout... even things that didn't have to do with the food. Where to put our signage, lanterns, etc. She just asked ALL of the right questions and knew exactly what help we needed to make the day amazing. She checked every detail off of my list. And boy do you make lists when you are a bride!! Sharon is such an asset to the Maple Tree operation. I received many compliments on the food and trust me, people were having seconds. I also heard wonderful things about the staff and how attentive they were. I had a lovely "helper" (as Kevin referred to her) that made sure that I had hors d'oeuvres during cocktail hour, a glass of rose in my hand at all times, a full plate of dinner waiting for me when I got back to the sweetheart table from making rounds to greet guests. It was great to be taken care of in this way. So many people say that they didn't have time to enjoy their wedding, but we were able to experience our wedding thanks to the phenomenal Maple Tree team. My only regret is that the night didn't last forever. Or at least 1 more hour! :) I recommend Maple Tree BBQ for event catering 100%. Would work with them again in a heartbeat. After a long day of shopping, why would you treat yourself with crappy and overpriced garbage from the Tanger food court? Just 10 minutes away from the mall, you'll find Maple Tree BBQ tucked inside a little house. Upon entering, you'll be greeted with MEAT and then more MEAT. A platter, which includes a meat and two sides of your choice, is more than enough to fill up one person. I would personally recommend the pastrami or the brisket. As for the sides, the Mac N Cheese is a bit underwhelming, but the smoked beans were great. read more

I think I found a slice of heaven on earth. I'm not exaggerating. I thought I knew barbecue. I've had it in the South & Midwest, but I'm not sure I've had it this good. I ordered a half-rack of St. Louis style ribs & the wife had the Beef Brisket. I can't really tell you how the brisket was. It seemed good, but the ribs were so damned good that it overshadowed everything else that I had. The meat slid off the bone & the flavor was excellent. I think the Mac & Cheese & Baked Beans were also very good, but as I said, I was focused on the deliciousness of the ribs. My wife & signed up as members of the Long Island Aquarium, but now we're looking forward to making regular stops at Maple Tree whenever we come out to Riverhead. read more

Had the smoked chicken , brisket, chicken wings, with baked beans, sweet potato, Mac n cheese, collars greens, and pickles. Everything was incredibly well done including the service. Shaq behind the counter knew his BBQ, was super helpful and a good dude to boot. If you're in and around Riverhead or the north fork you've gotta stop in to maple tree. The St. Louis Ribs were very good. They were meaty, tender and fell off the bone. They were also juicy, but not dripping with fat. Both the sweet and the spicy BBQ sauces were very tasty. I would definitely go back for the ribs. I would have given four stars, but the corn bread was small, dry and sad, and the mac and cheese was tasteless, bland and runny. Finally, the bread pudding was fresh, fluffy, and had a great texture. The caramel sauce could have been better, as the pleasant sweetness was overpowered by the bourbon reduction, which gave it a strong bite and alcohol aftertaste. Overall, I had a good experience and I look forward to learning the menu so I get only the good stuff next time. read more
