The ambiance was great and it was well-decorated. The service wasn't as good, the food took awhile and no one checked in while my water ran out. The food looked visually appealing but the crispy chicken was so crispy that it was tough to eat - dry, rubbery. The heat level was pretty good, and I unfortunately ate around the chicken. As I was leaving, the waiter noticed I had food left on the plate and asked if I needed a box. I told him my honest review of the meal and he said he would comp the meal. However I paid for it, in order to support the business, because it's never easy to run a restaurant. I hope it was just a bad meal and maybe an off night. Who knows?! read more

Brought my wife for Mother's Day Breakfast as we both love Thai food, but have never had it for breakfast. The atmosphere was perfect. Very clean and well lit and they have outdoor seating. We had a lovely time trying the food here. I love Asian brunch, it's the perfect mix of healthy veggies and protein. A plethora of vegetarian friendly options here and beverages to accompany meals. I wasn't enthralled with the iced lychee coffee, but I still drank what I could. Otherwise our food was lovely. Our breakfast French toast was sweet because of the fruit, not overly saturated with sugars. I loved my egg and veggies platter, I would've liked it more if they had put on more jalapeño though, since I'm a spice lover. The only downside was the space was crowded from two large parties. Okay I think now I have tried every Thai place in town and can say that maple pine is my lowest choice. Sorry. As far as Thai goes in cville, this is the bottom of the barrel for dinner. TO BE CLEAR - the food is still completely edible and passable for dinner but every other Thai place in cville just has better versions of the same dishes. We ordered a lot of dishes off their menu so we could get a full idea of what they had. I will say their apps were fine. The curry puffs came as two pieces and the inside was VERY sweet. It was more sweet potato than a samosa. I've never had them like this before. Overall, they tasted good and were well made but this particular style was not my favorite. My partner loved them though. I'd give them a 7/10 The potstickers were great - the only problem was there weren't more of them. 9/10 Now to the entrees. This is where they just did not do a good job and unfortunately I would really not eat dinner here again unless I can confirm this was a fluke of some sort. I would not want this experience again. Pad Thai - this was so mid. Worst pad Thai I've had in cville. Boring bland sauce. Measly portion of mung beans crushed peanut and chicken. Just a big pile of bland noodles. I will say it is completely edible and tasted fine to eat like it wasn't BAD. Just so aggressively average. 4/10 Pad see ew. This was also the worst pad see ew I've had in cville. The sauce was really watery and bland and the noodles felt like they didn't know how to cook them correctly so they were a mushy mess. The worst part though was there was maybe 2 noodles in the ENTIRE container. Literally I got an entire container of chicken and Chinese broccoli... pad see ew is a noodle dish but the way maple pine makes it you would not know. 3/10 Lord of noodle - I have never had this before and was pleasantly surprised. Good portion of noodle (which is weird bc it's the same noodle in the pad see ew...) but same issue with the texture being way too mushy. There was an excessive amount of minced chicken on top and the shrimp was flavorless. The flavor was kinda fine it was mushroom and green onion or scallion and so the flavor was simple and kinda fine. The texture issues though were not good. Mushy noodles and it was swimming in a watery sauce. Best dish but that's a low bar considering the others. 5/10 When I spend this much on dinner and try 3 entrees that are all misses, I hope the restaurant is having an off day. I am hoping I can update this review in the future but for now they completely missed the mark. Worst Thai I've had in cville - sorry. Hopefully their brunch is better. read more

The portion size was good, although the pricing was a little higher than I would prefer. The menu is wide and includes breakfast items, as the name suggests. we ate here on a Friday evening and, even though we've had some good experiences in the past, this was not one of them. the restaurant was full and they only had one primary waiter working all the tables. service was extremely slow and disjointed. the gyoza and shrimp apps were great as usual, but one of our co-diners got the grilled chicken fried rice and the chicken was strange and rubbery. my pad thai chicken was great and it's a generous helping. also, the heat wave in Charlottesville requires all places of business to have A/C going and it was either broken or not turned on at all. very hot and stuffy. hoping next time is better as I really enjoy this place generally. read more

Unique hidden gem that serves American brunch with a Thai twist as well as Thai brunch dishes. If you prefer a Thai lunch/dinner, there's a menu for that too! Beautiful open space with Insta-worthy opportunities. Food presentation is delightful. I ordered the Kai Ka Ta and Lychee Coffee. Both were delicious, and prices are reasonable. Okay...out of towners here spending the weekend in Charlottesville to check out the wineries and cideries. On a random Sunday the wife and I couldn't agree on where to eat, and then we found Maple & Pine. She can get brunch and I can have Thai Food? Sounds odd...but heck yeah! Let's do this. Wish I could say it was everything we wanted it to be. Okay...it was everything my wife wanted it to be. She had the Salmon Benedict and was really happy. My Thai Food one the other hand (beef noodle soup) was fairly bland and featureless...the beef was super tough, lacked flavor, and really chewy...and the soup itself lacked any of the nuance and vibrant flavors of good Thai food. And when I asked the waitress any question at all, she just couldn't be bothered. I was an inconvenience at best. Everyone in the place who was having a Western-style brunch seemed really happy. But if you're going for good Thai Food, I'd personally steer you toward Monsoon for a much better experience all around. read more

I ordered take out from Maple Pine and was delighted with our food. I had brunch with my mother as she recovered from surgery and the freshness and quality was outstanding--exactly what we needed! My poached eggs and salmon on English muffin was perfectly prepared and tasty. My mother's crab omelette was the best crab she's had in years (her words) and she's a real seafood connoisseur! Paid Charlottesville a visit with my family as a previous UVA alumni and wish this spot was open while I was a student! The food was excellent, quite literally every dish we ordered had its own wow factor. Came for brunch at around 10 AM and it was relatively empty, but service was incredibly quick. We got our drinks and food after only 10-15 minutes of waiting. Our waiter was attentive, kind and we passed along our compliments to the chef. We ordered the crab omelette, kai ka ta, chicken and waffles, ka pow crispy pork belly, pad see eaw and papaya salad. Everything hit the mark - from spice level, complexity of flavor and generous portion sizes. The standout dishes were: 1. Kai ka ta - unique flavor with the sauce and toasted bread to scoop up the chicken, veggies and fried eggs. 2. Crispy pork belly - sweet, savory with a side of rice and generous amounts of pork! 3. Papaya salad - refreshing, crunchy and we could tell it was made fresh that morning. Added bonus were the sizable pieces of shrimp on top! 4. Mango sticky rice - MUST ORDER!!! One of the best I had, perfect sweet treat to end the meal. Honorable mention goes to the Thai Iced Tea. Ordered one for myself and it was finished within minutes upon sharing. Highly recommend their brunch but am sure their lunch and dinner menus can't disappoint. Service was excellent, friendly and left us wowed. Good Thai Food, Nothing Incredible I'm a firm believer that Thai food must be exceptional to warrant repeat visits. As time has gone on, Thai food places in the Charlottesville area have become more and more common, making up just over 15 restaurants. The competition in this town is fierce. Therefore, it's I've been going to Maple Pine for quite some time now. Each time, I've tried something different so that I can get a variety of items on their menu and not judge the place off of one sole dish. I've tried their Thai Hot chicken fried rice, pad thai, fresh spring rolls, chicken satay, red curry, and potentially other dishes that I'm blanking on. The best thing I've had was their Thai iced tea, which shouldn't be the highlight of your meal. The bottom line? The food is okay. You can get a better Thai meal in Charlottesville, and you likely won't have to look far to find it. The ambience here isn't anything special either. The service is honestly the real problem. I once arrived for take out to pick up two orders. The first order was ready 25 minutes before the other order, and they were ordered pretty much back-to-back. One order was cold when I got home. My family has even commented on the lack of friendliness we feel from the wait staff. Overall, Maple Fine is fine, but you deserve better and can find better elsewhere. read more

This restaurant is located on Stony Point Road (off of Route 250) in the Riverside Village residential community. You would miss it if you didn't know it was there because it seems to be part of the residential development. Nevertheless, there is adequate parking in the lot, especially because there are designated spaces for patrons frequenting the restaurant. This restaurant has a covered outdoor patio as well as indoor seating with booths, chairs, high tables, and bar seating. With the restaurant being less than moderately full, we were seated within just a few seconds. We sat there and stared blankly for about 5 minutes before I got up and approached the host stand to request menus. Despite all the empty tables, we were seated directly beside two people. Like, very close. Uncomfortably close. That type of arrangement only works when restaurants are full, and even then it's not ideal. (Think about those half booth /half chair tiny tables at the Cheesecake Factory.) We requested to be moved to a different table and they happily obliged. (We noticed more people came in later and were seated at the same crammed table, and they eventually moved too.) My guest had to ask for replacement silverware as there was a sizable piece of food on the fork and the spoon contained crusty food bits. They swapped it out with no problem. We decided to give this place a try for restaurant week. The prix fixe menu offered three courses for $35, but we also ordered an add'l appetizer as well as drinks: -- Thai Lemon Ice Tea: a combo of Thai tea and fresh limeade. Smooth and refreshing. So good. However, it contained a ridiculous amount of crushed ice. -- Limeade: it's less sweet than other limeades I've tried, but instead of being overly tart, it simply tastes fruity and refreshing. Again, too much ice. -- Coconut shrimp: crispy, perfect amount of coconut flavor, complemented nicely by the side of sweet Thai chili sauce. Served on julienned cabbage. -- Thai samosa: curry potatoes in a deep fried pastry shell served with cucumber relish. The filling was unexpectedly sweet but good. Overall delicious and fried to perfection as the pastry dough was light and flaky. The cucumber relish was sweet and fresh. I thought the sweetness of the samosa filling paired with the sweet relish would be overkill, but it was a good match even though I still dipped mine in the hot sauce that came with the sun-dried beef. -- Sun-dried beef: not part of the prix fixe menu. The beef, mildly flavored but well-balanced with the right amount of salt and pepper, is served atop a bed of julienned cabbage and with a side of sriracha sauce. -- Spicy crab curry: delectable, delicious, and divine. Although there is lumped crab in the curry itself, the curry is garnished with a small soft shell fried crab which somehow remained crispy while floating in the broth. My guest did request that they make it less spicy (the server explained that with 3 asterisks beside the dish on the menu, it's one of their spiciest items, so my guest asked for a medium two-asterisk level of spice). I personally would've appreciated the extra spiciness to balance out the sweetness of the curry, but it was amazing as it was. The accompanying cumin rice topped with crispy onions is so flavorful and tasty. I could've eaten that by itself. -- Beef rib yellow curry: amazing! With only one asterisk beside this dish, I asked for level 2 spice but could've gone even spicier. Again, the broth was sweet but balanced by the other earthy spices and flavors in the thick broth that covered the short rib. The portion was huuuge. As someone who loves having leftovers, I greatly appreciated the big portion size. This dish was also accompanied by that bomb cumin rice. -- Chocolate lava cake: served lukewarm which is a no no for lava cake. I could've tolerated it if the flavor wasn't so deep and dark. I prefer milk chocolate over dark, and this cake was really intense. Served with coconut ice cream and garnished with grapes and strawberries which were sweet and juicy. I don't want to undermine how good the ice cream was; I'm not sure if it's made in-house, but it was perfect all by itself. -- Croissant bread pudding: incredible! Temperature-wise, this dessert was served warmer than the lava cake, go figure. This was also served with sweet and juicy grapes and strawberries along with the coconut ice cream which I loved. The bread pudding is less sweet than I've ever tasted but it allows you to appreciate the butteriness of the croissant even more. Because it was so uniquely different from traditional bread pudding (which I do happen to love), this was one of my favorite versions ever tasted. And, no raisins, thank goodness. Lastly, service was a bit slow, but they're a small establishment with only a few employees serving freshly made-to-order dishes, so this was understandable. The restaurant was 90% empty and they wanted to seat us at a small table, I requested for a larger booth. She obliged but looked annoyed. I mean why? We were not stingy customers, he had 2 beers and I asked for a papaya salad to go so we ate and then some... I truly liked my drunken noodle with beef, the proportion of beef was generous and it was a good cut. The 1 star though is for the smell of rancid liquified grease that permeated the air. For this we will not return. I used to be a industrial chemical rep and was more than familiar with the cause. It's a improperly cleaned water sump with the layer of grease of fat on the top of the tank for much past due. So much so that it is now rancid. The fix is easy, but doing so is not a priority. I don't want to spend nearly $70 for a meal with take home and be obligated to sit in a space that permeating with the smell of rancid grease... Do your upkeep! read more

Liars. I asked for tofu basil and they brought chicken. I ate a bite and realized it was not tofu it was made out of chicken thighs. I told the server (possibly the owner that l was served the wrong thing and instead of admitting a mistake was made she lied and said it was a tofu and wheat mix. I'm sorry, shouldn't the menu say that if that was the case? People have celiac disease and allergies. I'm a cook and a vegetarian and I have never in my life seen tofu that looks and tastes exactly like chicken thighs. A mistake was made, they happen. Best Thai in Charlottesville, just like its sister restaurant Pineapples. Everything is delicious here, and I'm so happy it's now conveniently located in our neighborhood. My favorites from the menu are kao soi, red curry, and ka pow kai dao. My husband's are the crispy duck and crispy basil. My picky father loved the mama drunk noodles, which I tasted and liked much better than the traditional wide noodles. Service is slow when they are busy (understandable since they are still pretty new), but the food is 10/10, and the ambiance is cute, bright, and clean. There is plenty of parking.
