Always a great visit! Spice for my catfish is American medium. It wasn't hot but I use the extra spices provided! I would had like some real fish sauce, but was very happy! My bride love the shrimp hot pot! Service can be slow and the phone can ring often! Ambiance was very chilled ! We enjoyed the food and just got water!

Did takeout. Waited only 10 mins as I placed order when I got there. Very friendly staff. I had Thai dumplings, sate (curry chicken with peanut dipping sauce), and bah-mee Tom yum soup. It was all delicious!!!!! I am in town for a conference and almost went back again but wanted to try another place. If I'm back next year, I will be back!!!!!

Review from 2017. Got their thai curry when I came. It was alright. Nothing to complain about but nothing stellar. It was pretty empty when we came. Server didn't check on us a whole lot but since it was so vacant, it was easy to wave them over. This is located very close the the UVA campus. So parking is street parking.

Normally I get food from here delivered and it's consistently delicious. We had a buddy visiting so we popped out to eat dinner at the restaurant. We had the combo appetizer platter and it was solid with three different types of sauces. The green curry w/ chicken was clucking good! My beau had the panang curry w shrimp (hot) and he loved the spicy goodness. The service was quick, attentive, and amiable. The ambiance was casual and broken up with the faux roof and varied floor height. I probably won't come back often, but will continue to order for delivery

Thai 99 II is tucked away in a small strip mall off 29. There was only one other table taken at 5:30 on a Thursday evening in March. They did appear to have quite a few takeout orders. The interior is no frills with plain tables and chairs and a few wall decorations. Service was perfunctory. There was one guy seating, taking orders, delivering food and clearing tables. As we were leaving, another lady came out and started helping with checks and dirty dishes. At this point, it was 6:30 and four tables were taken. We ordered drinks first. The glass of Frei Brothers merlot was a decent size and tasted fine. The Tanqueray and tonic consisted mostly of tonic so I can't recommend this. When the Jasmine rice is the highlight of the meal, something is amiss. The panang curry pork sauce had an overly peanut butter-y taste. I typically order panang curry and have never had the nut be so prominent. The fairly tough pork came with zucchini and peppers. While the shrimp mango had a nice presentation, it was disappointing. The plate came with sliced tomatoes, cucumbers and broccoli that had a bit of a crunch. The sauce was more on the side or underneath, not on top. The shrimp were awful. They either had a very fishy taste or a distinct watery, flavorless taste, and we could not finish them. All in all, not a good experience for us. We will have to give this restaurant a pass.

I am absolutely BLOWN AWAY. I haven't had such incredible pad Thai in YEARS. It was fresh, fast, and the flavors were explosive in every amazing way possible. I selected the spiciest option, and for the first time since I've been in Charlottesville, Thai '99 delivered. The spice hit me in all the right places and left me wanting more. This is the BEST thai place in Charlottesville. It is truly a hidden gem, but with the FLAVORS and prices, it is unbeatable. As for aesthetic, the inside offers a quint, cutely decorated interior that brings a familiarity. I can't not rave about this place enough. I haven't fallen in love with a restaurant so quickly before. Go give it a try; your life will be changed.

Thai 99 was a solid restaurant as a first timer. The Thai style pho soup was dark and very rich compared to the usual Vietnamese style pho. For certain people, the sauce might seem a little too saucy, but I was fine with it. Thai fried rice tasted like any other fried rice, but I surprisingly didn't get sick of it. Customer service was fantastic and everyone seemed glad to serve and help. Quick additional note also, the napkins were VERY GOOD QUALITY. One of the best quality napkins I've seen thus far. Very thick and very large. Would come again!

The wonton soup tasted extremely salty and looked dark as if someone put soy sauce in it. This is the first time in my entire life where I tasted bad wonton soup. The won ton itself was great. It was just the salty broth. I make this at home, and it is not that difficult to make. It is supposed to be a simple broth (partly the reason why I ordered it because I wanted something simple). I told them about the saltiness. They tried to make it right by bringing out another soup with a better broth. The pho was just okay but was not as fragrant as expected. I am Vietnamese and make this at home as well. Otherwise, it had everything it was supposed to have. The fried rice was a large portion and tasted better than the other two dishes. Overall, it was a good experience. The service was good. We got seated quickly. The ambiance and decor was vibrant. The bathrooms were clean. I will try other dishes later and update this review.

We were sat promptly as there was only one other table at the time there but once we were sat about 5 more tables came in. Our server brought waters to start and I had a Thai tea, which was good, not too sweet- which I like. I order the dumpling as an app, they're pretty small but you get a good amount and the sauce was really good. In order the red curry and my husband ordered the Thai fried rice. Both were really good. I liked his dish a bit more, it was very savory. The red curry had fresh vegetables in it and still had a nice crunch to it, which I like. If we're back in Charlottesville we'll def go back.

This restaurant and owner deserves all the recognition and appreciation in the world. I really cannot emphasize enough how much I love this place. I ordered takeout, and a smooth process had been implemented allowing me to quickly grab it. I liked that their online ordering system had a lot of checkboxes to customize things, but was nonplussed when I pulled out my vegetable soup with the "no cauliflower" option (which they clearly wrote on the container to remind themselves) but which did in fact have a bunch of broccoli and cauliflower that imbued the soup with a sulfurous foulness that I was hoping to avoid. Setting that aside, the rest of my food was quite good. Oddly, their curries are more vegetarian-friendly than some of their stir-fry dishes. I ordered my green curry Thai hot, and they delivered a ferocious dish with no questions asked, and a small sachet of extra dried chili that I didn't need to use for this and so saved for other food. The curry with some aromatic Jasmine rice hit the spot. Some vegetable rolls with very fine noodle threads made for a good snack later. I could certainly see coming back, ordering something different, and getting high quality food.

No Thai food at all....and thus is my review. Food (3 out of 5): We ordered the Chicken Panang Curry and Pad See Ew beef. The panning curry was my favorite of the two entrees. The chicken itself was tender and good, the broth was far too thin to be a good curry, but the flavor itself wasn't too bad. It was unfortunate that it did not look like the photo, it was missing the red peppers and the basil leaves. The Pad See Ew beef....well, I am a huge fan of this dish and get it every possible moment. This one was definitely not my favorite - the sauce itself was a bit too "fishy" for my taste. The noodles were pretty mushy by the time they arrived and they seemed to be the dry rice noodles (not the fresh ones.). The beef itself, which is a $3 upcharge, was good, though.. So, I would order the curry again and perhaps order a non-noodle dish next time.... but I would order again, with my expectations in check. Also, I would ask for chili paste, soy sauce and chopsticks!
