Because of the incoming winter storm, this place was not busy so we were seated quickly. The service was quick, however, it seemed like the one of the waiters could not be bothered to get us a knife, or explained why we couldn't get fried rice. There were a few tables near us that still had plates and food left from previous parties that were not cleaned up. I'm assuming they were understaffed. The food was great! Thai 99 II is tucked away in a small strip mall off 29. There was only one other table taken at 5:30 on a Thursday evening in March. They did appear to have quite a few takeout orders. The interior is no frills with plain tables and chairs and a few wall decorations. Service was perfunctory. There was one guy seating, taking orders, delivering food and clearing tables. As we were leaving, another lady came out and started helping with checks and dirty dishes. At this point, it was 6:30 and four tables were taken. We ordered drinks first. The glass of Frei Brothers merlot was a decent size and tasted fine. The Tanqueray and tonic consisted mostly of tonic so I can't recommend this. When the Jasmine rice is the highlight of the meal, something is amiss. The panang curry pork sauce had an overly peanut butter-y taste. I typically order panang curry and have never had the nut be so prominent. The fairly tough pork came with zucchini and peppers. While the shrimp mango had a nice presentation, it was disappointing. The plate came with sliced tomatoes, cucumbers and broccoli that had a bit of a crunch. The sauce was more on the side or underneath, not on top. The shrimp were awful. They either had a very fishy taste or a distinct watery, flavorless taste, and we could not finish them. All in all, not a good experience for us. We will have to give this restaurant a pass. read more

Really sweet family owned restaurant (classic giveaway: young son seated at one of the tables on his ipad all night). I wish I could give this place a higher rating but the food was underwhelming (though maybe it was just the night we went? Extremely busy and they were understaffed). My kids liked the pad thai we ordered them and I was feeling like some noodle soup since it was a cold night and tried the pho, which was pretty solid. We also tried the shrimp hot pot which was not very good. Overall more expensive than I was expecting and with dishes that were lacking. I selected the spiciest option, and for the first time since I've been in Charlottesville, Thai '99 delivered. The spice hit me in all the right places and left me wanting more. This is the BEST thai place in Charlottesville. It is truly a hidden gem, but with the FLAVORS and prices, it is unbeatable. As for aesthetic, the inside offers a quint, cutely decorated interior that brings a familiarity. I can't not rave about this place enough. Thai 99 was a solid restaurant as a first timer. The Thai style pho soup was dark and very rich compared to the usual Vietnamese style pho. For certain people, the sauce might seem a little too saucy, but I was fine with it. Thai fried rice tasted like any other fried rice, but I surprisingly didn't get sick of it. Customer service was fantastic and everyone seemed glad to serve and help. Quick additional note also, the napkins were VERY GOOD QUALITY. One of the best quality napkins I've seen thus far. This was definitely my least favorite Thai spot so far in Charlottesville. They messed up my takeout order and when I called to let them know, I had to ask for a refund on the item because they never offered. Then it was a huge hassle to get said refund (they wanted my card number over the phone) so it never ended up happening. The food was very average. The soup and curries we got all had an overpowering ginger taste and the spring rolls were burnt. Definitely better Thai options at a better price point in the area! read more

We ordered $50 of takeout from Thai '99 II last night. It was delicious; we loved it. So why 3 stars? Because MSG. My partner's MSG-induced migraine was so bad the next day they had to take off work. Unlike most modern establishments, there is no mention on their online menu or website that they use the additive. Even if we could request they hold it next time, we would hesitate to order again in case there is MSG in the pre-prepared sauces or if it's mistakenly added to the dish. The Thai steamed dumplings were quite good, as was the Mango Shrimp. The SP6, Duck with Tamarind was awful. The duck tasted like it had been in a freezer for way too long(freezer-burn taste). I didn't say anything to my wife, when she tried it. She took one bite and put the rest on a side plate, saying it tasted bad. We've eaten plenty of duck, so we're familiar with how it's supposed to taste. This is the first time I didn't finish a dish and didn't want to take any home. Atmosphere is ok, though some seats have a dangerous drop off without a rail. I know a bunch of Thai places in C'ville, and cook Thai at home with home grown spices, including lime leaf, galangal, lemon grass, etc. Sorry, I can't recommend this spot. I've never had Thai food before this so I'm not sure how this place compares to others but as a man that loves spicy the angry chicken (Double Thai hot) hit the spot. I think next time I'm going to go triple Thai hot. The potstickers are also really good. The staff is extremely friendly and I look forward to coming back and trying other things on the menu. Recently went again and got the vegetable fried rice w/ chicken (Triple Thai hot) and it was WAY better then the angry chicken and drunken noodles. I've started coming here literally almost every week with a friend to eat the N--5 special noodle soup. It is SO GOOD and perfectly balanced sweet, salty, sour with just the right amount of meatiness and peanutty flavor in one heartwarming soup. You have to try this. On top of that, service can be a little slow since there aren't a ton of servers, but it's never been a problem and everyone has been so sweet and kind. Definitely recommend!! read more

We really wanted to like this place, but issues arose immediately. 1) The restaurant was quite warm and humid. We did not get our drinks for 15-20 minutes. Only one waitress was on the floor taking care of everyone so we are not blaming her. 2) The mens bathroom had a lot of issues: no paper towels in the bathroom and the soap dispenser was broken, but soap was made available and the urinal was completely out of order. 3) I have to preface this by saying that we live closer to Washington DC and a good assortment of Vietnamese and Thai restaurants with more authentic dishes. This was not good Vietnamese pho or good Thai; the food was exceptionally bland, the pho broth was flat, and the chicken satay (sate) had no flavor. Was dry and disgusting. Even the mops and brooms were sitting out on the floor. We do not recommend this place. read more
