All frills, no thrills! My partner and I wanted to get away for Valentines Day weekend, so we decided to book a room at the Oakhurst Inn. We assumed the stay would be luxurious and worth the price (after all, the Inn is more expensive than most other lodging facilities in the area). Unfortunately, what they woo you in fancy gimmicks, like champagne waiting at check-in, doesn't measure up to the comfort of a hotel like the Graduate or an Airbnb. The Oakhurst Inn comprises of different satellite locations on a singular property, and we booked a room at the Café. This made check-in and parking confusing, but we finally figured out the location after speaking to the front desk - and drinking our beloved champagne. Related to this point (re location), do note that if you're staying in the café, you need to walk to the main office to access the bar (these amenities are not within the same building). This also means that there is no immediate access to water, food service, etc. In 30-40 degree weather? Kind of a bummer. Speaking of which, the room is freezing! You can tell there isn't much insulation in the bathroom, which faces the outdoor patio behind the café. Everything is cold to the touch and the bathroom windows are filthy. The room could really use a deep clean, especially during COVID. There are some tasteful details, like the coffee station (although there is no tea, despite hosting a tea bag coaster). You could tell there was no effort to restock the sugar or the shampoo (nearly empty). The alarm clock was not working, but was surely gosh darn cute, sitting above the bed. I found the artwork quirky, but fun. The bed was a dream - spacious, breathable fabric and bedding, and lots of pillows with adjustable night-side tables that pull down from the frame (and/or can be stowed away). This makes for convenient storage. I would like to note that the phone in the room did not work. We tried to call the front desk, but the phone kept ringing (even after we dialled the phone). No worries, we have wifi for our cell phones! Accessibility: We climbed a steep staircase to our room; at the top, the stairs curled in on an angle and I found them incredibly awkward and difficult to navigate. I would not recommend this stay for someone with limited mobility and/or disabilities. Fortunately, my partner and I are both young and agile, but I assume some people staying here might find the situation uncomfortable. All in all, there are some exciting amenities and features, like a huge bed and plenty of cable television. However, I was not impressed with the stay. The food is overpriced, the staff is disorganized (we tried ordering room service in the morning, only to be placed on hold and forgotten about; the number to the café was incorrect and forwarded us to the main office), the location is subpar, and the price is simply not worth the (supposed) elegance. Sorry, but better luck next time!

The Oakhurst Inn is well maintained and has updated, clean rooms. The front desk was extremely helpful and responsive throughout our stay. The only downside is that the building has very thin walls and we had people staying next to us who we heard talking, closing doors and walking around all through the night.

A beautifully furnished inn with excellent, friendly service. Lot of space as well. Love the common area in each cottage. They offer coffee, tea, and cold drinks. Lots of books. The whole place has a homey and library ambiance. Retro-chic is the word. They offer valet parking (it's required and free)

We had a completely magical stay at the Oakhurst. The Inn has a vintage chic vibe and the staff were kind and helpful. Our room also had the most beautiful bathroom I've ever seen in my life. I can't recommend the Inn highly enough!

This is a charming boutique hotel with a huge "but". We were told the owner of the inn also owns the college apartments in front of the houses where our rooms are. The two don't mix well. This is the second time since 11 PM that I've been awakened by the young voices just outside my room on this summer night. Maybe winter would be quieter but I won't be back to see. The hotel staff, especially Jess, were nice but they can't fix the noise. I've been awake nearly an hour now with the noise. There was just a loud outburst of screams and laughter which apparently awoke the person above me because I heard him get up. When I'm paying this much for a hotel room I expect to be able to sleep. Edit: In the morning as we checked out I reported the lack of sleep. Jake apologized and asked how he could make me feel better. He removed that night's charge and made us coffee. The cafe and the lobby don't serve coffee until 8 on weekends.

My Wahoo daughter brought me here during Family Weekend, and now I totally get why this place is a UVA favorite. The building itself is part of a beautifully restored historic industrial complex off Preston Avenue. It's an adaptive-reuse space (formerly part of the old Coca-Cola bottling works), and the design keeps that industrial character alive: tall ceilings, exposed materials, and a layout that feels open, social, and easygoing. The outdoor area is especially smartly done. They've got roll-down fabric walls and overhead heat lamps that keep the patio comfortable even when the temperature dips. It's basically an all-weather beer-garden vibe, and it works. Here's how our meal went down: * Shared starter: the Jumbo Bavarian Pretzel. Warm, soft, perfectly salted, and killer with both the mustard and the cheese sauce. * My entrée: the Local Steak Salad -- gorgeous presentation, tender grass-fed beef, and those pickled turnips, radish slices, and greens in herb buttermilk dressing absolutely tied it together. * My daughter's entrée: Bratwurst, which disappeared quickly, so that tells you what you need to know. Service setup is counter-service for food with table drop-off, and drinks are ordered directly at the bar. It's efficient, friendly, and gives the whole place an easygoing "European beer hall meets Charlottesville neighborhood spot" feel. Kardinal Hall is one of those places where good food, good architecture, and good energy all line up. If you're in town -- especially visiting UVA -- this is a must-stop.

I had hoped that it would offer a high class experience, but it was just okay. The room had some minor aesthetic touches, but in substance was pretty standard. The entrance to the hotel felt a bit cramped, and the building seemed centered around the restaurant that didn't have much for me. The sheets caused some skin irritation, and I wish all hotels used the most hypoallergenic detergent available. From a service perspective, it was quite good. I was offered an early checkin and also took a late checkout, so I got a ton of time with the room. They also stored my luggage, including various baked goods, after I was done. So I got a lot of value out of the room. The question to me was how this hotel would compare to the others that are in downtown Charlottesville; would the experience be worth a bit more than the more standard Marriotts or various others. I was not convinced that it would be worth spending the extra money on.

We learned that this location has more service than the one we're familiar with. They'll fill your water for you vs self service. There are two floors to work on and a rooftop. We chose to work in the kitchen space on the second floor. The design and decor here is gorgeous. I found myself wishing I could take some of the artwork home. Just like our Common House back in Richmond, they offer member events. They sounded so fun I considered driving back to Cville just to experience them. While we were there, we ordered some food. The food we got was beyond delicious. I'd argue even better than the RVA food. The menus vary based on location. I got a delicious miso salmon bowl. My body was craving something like it and I was thrilled when I found out how delicious it tasted. My boyfriend got a grilled cheese and loved each bite. However, this past year things really started going downhill. There has been a huge staff turnover, including several staff members who were really the life and soul of the place. Common House has not been able to keep a chef for more than a few months, which has lead to a lot of hit or miss dining experiences. The free coffee, which was a big perk during coworking days, is no more. There have also been several private events that caused full house closures to members. The final nail in the coffin for me was having my membership fee raised not once but twice over the course of a year. The first time ($25 increase) I was given ample notice. The second I was given no notice and just saw an additional $35 on my credit card. When I inquired about why my monthly membership fee had been increased I was given no response. With this, I decided my time at Common House has run its course and canceled my membership. This has seemed like the perfect "third space" for remote young professionals like myself, but it seems that in the last few months several others have had the same thoughts I had and decided to leave. It will always be a cool space, but the current management leaves a lot to be desired.
