I had a very positive experience. The valet, Charlie, was pleasant upon check in. The staff at the front desk made the checkin and check out seamless. They even offered bottled water at the end of the experience; that was a very nice touch. The room is tidy and neat. I had a good night rest and would come again in my travels!

Bottom Line: Comfortable hotel in a great location with nods to Jefferson. My husband and I both really like the boutique and unique feel of Marriott Autograph Collection hotels so whenever there is one where we are traveling we stay in it. The Draftsman has all of the comforts of a modern hotel with decor inspired by colonial America and Monticello. We stayed in a basic King room but we found it to be very comfortable. The bed was comfy, the smart TV was a decent size, the room was quiet, the lighting provided a nice ambiance and the bathroom was well appointed. I liked the spa shower, large vanity and the C.O. Bigelow toiletries. The bathroom has a sliding barn door which is very stylish but doesn't afford as much privacy as a privy should! I really liked the decor of the hotel including in the rooms, lobby and library. It is definitely inspired by colonial America and Monticello but does not have an old or stuffy feel about it. In the lobby I especially liked the wallpaper and how the settee is accessible from multiple sides much like Jefferson's bed in Monticello. In the hotel room I really liked the two fabrics used on the curtains as well as the bathroom sconces. Also, its neat that each room has a draftsman table which I think makes a great bar or vanity. I appreciate a hotel with a nice gym and the Draftsman's is more than adequate. There are about 6 to 8 pieces of cardio equipment, a cable machine, medicine balls and open floor space. The gym is located on the top floor and you can also see UVA's Rotunda from the windows. One morning I saw two hot air balloons floating over the Rotunda which was neat. We also enjoyed a meal at the hotel's restaurant - Renewal. We enjoyed the bartender, our meal, the service and the decor. The Draftsman has a good location. There are lots of good restaurants within walking distance. The UVA Rotunda, The Corner and the Downtown Mall are also within walking distance. It was nice to be able to valet the car and then just explore on foot. Note that the Draftsman only offers valet parking. To explore beyond the immediately vicinity we retrieved the car and it only took the valet a few minutes to get it from the adjacent garage. The hotel is named for Virginia's three draftsman - Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence, James Madison drafted the Constitution , and James Monroe drafted the Monroe Doctrine - a policy document opposing further European colonialism in the American colonies. Of course all these guys wrote lots of other stuff too! Overall I really enjoyed my stay at the Draftsman and would stay here again.

I will start with the positives: staff is extremely friendly and welcoming. The restaurant attached to the hotel, although not Marriott owned, is excellent. To call this hotel part of the Marriott "Autograph Collection" and charge Autograph prices is a bit of a stretch. The suites are quite small/inconvenient layout and furnishings are on par with Fairfield Inn properties. The room had a layer of dust on the dresser and night stand. No luxury towels or bed linens. One of the days during our stay there was no valet on duty, but we were still charged for valet parking. Along with a few other minor inconveniences added up to a not worth the price experience...meaning not memorable. Next time we will probably stay at the Courtyard Marriott. To date, Marriott does not have a Lucy property in Charlottesville, VA.

As someone who is always traveling for work and staying in multiple hotels a month, I was very impressed with my stay here at the Draftsman. The front desk provided excellent customer service and my room was incredible. I loved the view of the mountains and the proximity of this hotel to the corner. The lobby was decorated beautifully for the holidays and there was a bar at the bottom floor that was incredibly lively. I love this hotel and would come back in a heartbeat!

My Wahoo daughter brought me here during Family Weekend, and now I totally get why this place is a UVA favorite. The building itself is part of a beautifully restored historic industrial complex off Preston Avenue. It's an adaptive-reuse space (formerly part of the old Coca-Cola bottling works), and the design keeps that industrial character alive: tall ceilings, exposed materials, and a layout that feels open, social, and easygoing. The outdoor area is especially smartly done. They've got roll-down fabric walls and overhead heat lamps that keep the patio comfortable even when the temperature dips. It's basically an all-weather beer-garden vibe, and it works. Here's how our meal went down: * Shared starter: the Jumbo Bavarian Pretzel. Warm, soft, perfectly salted, and killer with both the mustard and the cheese sauce. * My entrée: the Local Steak Salad -- gorgeous presentation, tender grass-fed beef, and those pickled turnips, radish slices, and greens in herb buttermilk dressing absolutely tied it together. * My daughter's entrée: Bratwurst, which disappeared quickly, so that tells you what you need to know. Service setup is counter-service for food with table drop-off, and drinks are ordered directly at the bar. It's efficient, friendly, and gives the whole place an easygoing "European beer hall meets Charlottesville neighborhood spot" feel. Kardinal Hall is one of those places where good food, good architecture, and good energy all line up. If you're in town -- especially visiting UVA -- this is a must-stop.

Squeaky clean hardwood floors all over. Tasteful old furniture. Every staff member I spoke to was polite, courteous, and happy to help. The self serve stations for hot coffee, tea, and cold water was a convenient resource outside of the door. This inn appears to be made of several former homes that were turned into a campus of buildings making the Oakhurst Inn. It's not a single building. The small lawn in the center of the complex has benches, hammock, and a fireplace that seems welcoming and nice, but I wasn't aware of them until I left. There were a few problems during my stay. The inn requires guests to use valet parking which is $40 per night, not disclosed before my stay, and often required a long wait for the valet to return. This makes it hard to retrieve anything you need from your car. The front desk staff are often missing from the front desk - I had to wait 15 minutes for someone to come back and check me in on arrival. Likewise, the bartender is often away from station and you might wait 10 or 30 minutes for the bartender to return. There is no mini fridge or microwave in the hotel rooms. The pool area was extremely dark at night, making it tricky or dangerous to navigate. The pool water was lukewarm, not warm at all. The sauna was out of order and the doorway was small and obscured by chairs. Not accessible and difficult to find. This inn has no gym. The lobby is very small and has no seating for guests or places to hang their luggage, although the nearby lounge has a few leather couches and a fireplace that doesn't appear to be working. Not the most welcoming or convenient. Overall I don't think it's worth the hefty price tag and would stay elsewhere when I return to Charlottesville.

We learned that this location has more service than the one we're familiar with. They'll fill your water for you vs self service. There are two floors to work on and a rooftop. We chose to work in the kitchen space on the second floor. The design and decor here is gorgeous. I found myself wishing I could take some of the artwork home. Just like our Common House back in Richmond, they offer member events. They sounded so fun I considered driving back to Cville just to experience them. While we were there, we ordered some food. The food we got was beyond delicious. I'd argue even better than the RVA food. The menus vary based on location. I got a delicious miso salmon bowl. My body was craving something like it and I was thrilled when I found out how delicious it tasted. My boyfriend got a grilled cheese and loved each bite. When you're a member you usually get a $25 credit for your birthday (which we used towards lunch), however this location went above and beyond and brought Richard a complimentary chocolate cheesecake without blinking twice. The service and food here are immaculate. I cannot wait to return.

However, this past year things really started going downhill. There has been a huge staff turnover, including several staff members who were really the life and soul of the place. Common House has not been able to keep a chef for more than a few months, which has lead to a lot of hit or miss dining experiences. The free coffee, which was a big perk during coworking days, is no more. There have also been several private events that caused full house closures to members. The final nail in the coffin for me was having my membership fee raised not once but twice over the course of a year. The first time ($25 increase) I was given ample notice. The second I was given no notice and just saw an additional $35 on my credit card. When I inquired about why my monthly membership fee had been increased I was given no response. With this, I decided my time at Common House has run its course and canceled my membership. This has seemed like the perfect "third space" for remote young professionals like myself, but it seems that in the last few months several others have had the same thoughts I had and decided to leave. It will always be a cool space, but the current management leaves a lot to be desired.
