If you like creaky floors, rickety stairs and dingy hallways this is the place for you. I know it…read moreis old and historic but that is no excuse for dirty doors carpets and furnishings. Furthermore the room appointments have seen better days and would be improved by a good cleaning and a coat of polish. The inns landscaping consists of indigenous weeds snd spent drink containers. Frankly the whole area would benefit from a beautification program. Crumbling sidewalks, patched asphalt and overgrown brush is not very appealing. The street reeked of that sweet pungent nauseating smell of mary jane. Perhaps that is why the place is so uninviting, the population is too stoned to care. Last, but certainly not least, the toilet in our room is so low that you feeling like you are squatting over an open pit ( and the flush mechanism is malfunctioning). The two stars was awarded to our waitress Kristan and delicious all included breakfast at Farmbell kitchen.

Breakfast was amazing The staff was so warm and inviting, and has great recommendations for surrounding wineries/activities. My fiancé booked a night stay and made a reservation for dinner here (must book 1 night stay for Wine Cellar Dinner) and it was worth it. Check-in was breeze with mobile key. Hospitality was just. amazing. We stayed in the Blush room. Chef communication was great and verified via email to accommodate food allergies. Food: every course is paired perfectly with wine. Everything was fresh, farm-to-table, and locally sources.

I also debated not doing a review as I would love to keep this treasure a secret! That's how lovely our experience was. From the ease of check-in to the beautiful room to the exceptional wine. She was creative in both her food preparation and her plating. Flavors were exquisite. A really wonderful experience due to Stephanie's expertise in the kitchen and Courtney's wonderful hospitality. We will definitely go back...so you probably shouldn't try ;)

My mom and I spent four nights at Glass House Winery & Brewery for a mother-daughter trip around…read moreCharlottesville, and it ended up being one of the highlights of our entire trip. Glass House is in Free Union, about 20 minutes outside downtown Charlottesville. The location was perfect because it felt peaceful and tucked away in the country, while still being close enough to explore Charlottesville, Crozet, wineries, orchards and hiking. The hospitality was what really made the stay special. Kristin, the chef at the B&B, is incredibly warm and welcoming, and breakfast at 9 AM each morning was something we genuinely looked forward to. She personalized meals around our likes and dislikes and used fresh, local ingredients. During our stay we had blueberry ricotta pancakes, peach and Brie cinnamon bread pudding, latkes with breakfast meats, and an egg quiche with sausage and vegetables. There was also yogurt, fresh fruit, smoothies and coffee available throughout the day. The B&B has a very personal feel, with cookbooks throughout the house, unique Nicaraguan tropical decor and themed rooms such as the Chocolate Room, Wine Room and Under the Stars Suite. The bedding was comfortable, with both communal spaces and areas where you could have some privacy. The attention to detail was wonderful. We had a chocolate surprise, and a complimentary glass at the winery for being guests. I'm not much of a sweets person, but the chocolates were somehow exactly what I wanted all weekend, especially with a glass of wine. You can also purchase bottles and chocolates after hours, and they recently launched a wine club. I also really liked that the owner is actually around the property and winery. He was happy to answer questions, talk about the area and share the history of the vineyard, which made the experience feel much more personal. The winery is about a five-minute walk from the B&B and is open Wednesday through Sunday. The glass house itself is beautiful, almost like a greenhouse, with water elements, accent lighting through the greenhouse plants and vineyards located directly behind it. There are places to sit and watch the sunset with a glass of wine or enjoy coffee in the morning. The sunsets were incredible. On a clear night, the colors over the vineyards seemed to change every few minutes, and it was incredibly peaceful. We also saw wildlife around the property. The winery offers chocolate and wine pairings, reasonably priced wine, live music and food trucks. The live music was especially good and covered different genres throughout the weekend. We even had a seafood boil from one of the food trucks. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. The brewery is another three-minute walk from the B&B and is currently open Saturdays. Having both a winery and brewery on the same property is something I didn't see anywhere else during our trip. We tried the pineapple sour and coconut stout, and they have a light beer coming soon. The brewery itself is also really unique because it was made using leftover wine bottles. There is plenty to do without leaving the property, including a saltwater pool, jacuzzi, live music, food trucks and plenty of places to relax. We also used Glass House as our home base for exploring the area. Carter Mountain Orchard was fun for apple cider donuts, cider and other treats. We visited Pippin Hill, Hark Vineyards, Eastwood Estate and Knights Gambit, each with a completely different atmosphere. We also hiked Humpback Rocks and Crabtree Falls. Humpback is definitely strenuous, while Crabtree was more manageable and had beautiful views. We spent some time in Crozet and downtown Charlottesville as well. We had a delicious meal at Smokehouse BBQ at Piedmont, and downtown Charlottesville's Downtown Mall was fun to explore. Vita Pizza was delicious and very accommodating with our food variations. One thing future guests should know is that most restaurants outside of Glass House are about 20-30 minutes away, so keep some snacks on hand and make dinner plans earlier. Most wineries also close around 5-6 PM, which actually worked well for us because we could enjoy the wineries during the day and get back to Glass House in time for the sunset. Our four-night mother-daughter trip was exactly what we wanted, and Glass House was the perfect home base. What made it even more memorable was the people we met and how genuinely welcomed we felt. There are plenty of beautiful wineries in the Charlottesville area, but Glass House felt different. You get wine, beer, live music, food, hiking, a pool, a jacuzzi, beautiful sunsets and a truly personal B&B experience all in one place. I genuinely think it would be a missed opportunity to visit the Charlottesville area and not experience Glass House. We will absolutely stay here again and recommend it to anyone visiting. You get the peaceful small-town feel along with beautiful, friendly amenities, and we truly can't say enough good things about our experience.

I called the inn concierge to ask a few questions, but they didn't respond, and never retuned my call, although I left a clear message. I tried calling again on another day, but again went to voicemail. It was easy to locate and parking was fine. The landscaping around the inn was lovely. My room was at the top of a narrow, steep staircase. No offer of help to get my bag up there until I got to the top, and then one of the housekeepers kindly helped me with my bag. The room was what I expected, given the inn is old. The bathroom was okay and the hot water was fine. It was clean, but there were ants around the coffee maker, as well as larger bugs- I woke up to find a medium sized black bug under my back and in the bathroom , another larger one on my shoulder. I didn't find anyone at the desk at 5pm or at 7am the next morning to answer questions or check out. I had been given a number to call if you needed them but I didn't want to bother them, as it wasn't an emergency. There were no snacks or drinks available in the afternoon or overnight, and they recommended I either go to a gas station nearby, or go to the beautiful winery down the road, which I did, but they were full and did not offer a take-out lunch. There was a nice new Nespresso machine in my room, and I enjoyed the coffee immensely. I did not stay for breakfast, as I found my stay an unpleasant experience overall. It was not a place I would want to visit again.

An absolutely beautifully renovated historic structure was constructed into a well appointed accommodation. This is a one bedroom standalone cottage with a sizable wood deck off the bedroom. It has a full kitchen, perfect for extended stays. Our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer. Ginger, our point of contact with 1804 Cottages, set us up with a well stocked refrigerator and a precooked omelette and bacon breakfast for the following morning including croissants, yogurt, juices, milk etc. She literally thought of everything. After a long day of travel, this was a huge benefit. The 1804 inn and cottages is a 'must do' for couples, families or a group of friends that appreciate wine and beautiful settings to share together. My wife and I agreed...this is a magical place. So much so, we would travel again across the country to stay here. See you in 2023 Barboursville and 1804 Inn and Cottages!

My new husband and I rented out all the cottages for our wedding this past weekend. The cottages…read morethemselves were absolutely beautiful. With that being said, the Inn Keeper, Jo, left a lot to be desired. She was very difficult to work with and added a lot of unnecessary stress to our wedding. For example, we were never told (looked back through every email) that the Pinot Grigio cottage (which is the only two bedroom cottage) had a different price if you planned to use both bedrooms. So on the day of our wedding, the second bedroom was dead bolted and was not accessible. I called the lady at the 1804 Inn who kindly told me she would come unlock it. Then another woman immediately called back and rudely told me we hadn't paid for the second bedroom. I told her that was never told to us by Jo. And her response was that she didn't know what Jo had told us, but if we paid another $100 she could unlock it. I obviously had bigger things going on that day, so we said fine. And they unlocked the bedroom but did not put out a second bottle of wine (a bottle of wine and breakfast is included with each cottage set for 2). She also charged our credit card for twice the amount her email (sent a few days before the wedding) had stated it would be charged. There was no invoice sent when we were charged. No breakdown in the charges. I had to email her myself for further information. And 3 days later (very typical of communication with Jo... usually took longer) she finally responded with pictures of the blurry screen of an iPhone showing us various things (like a fire extinguisher used, which she states was our cottage but looking at the virtual tour it is not, but she said "I'm not going to argue, it was your cottage"). Out of all the stress wedding planning brings, Jo was at the top of our list. I'm very glad I never have to communicate with her further. When I told Jo she caused the most unnecessary stress for me while planning my wedding, she told me that our group of friends were the worst guests. When I inquired as to why? She said because the furniture was slightly moved around in one of the rooms. And there were cigarette butts on the ground of one porch. For being an older woman, her maturity has not come with her age. I loved barboursville as a venue and do not regret getting married there. And the cottages were beautiful. It just seems like Jo is very separate from the actual venue and is less than accommodating. If they change Inn Keepers I would absolutely recommend staying in the cottages. But for now, we won't return until that changes. For reference I'm adding the blurry picture she sent us of the fireplace. And then the picture of the actual fireplace where we stayed. But again, she said she wouldn't argue with me (she clearly does not know her own cottages very well)
