The first few times we ordered from here, the food was great. The butternut squash curry, the spicy eggplant, and the brunch were all great. However, tonight I ordered drunken noodles, spicy eggplant, and tom kha all with a two pepper spice level, as I usually do. The spicy eggplant wasn't spicy at all and the other two dishes were almost inedibly spicy. Wayyyy more than "two peppers". I included a picture of the visible chili flecks throughout the drunken noodles. So, I had to deduct points for a lack of consistency in spice, because I truly can't finish this meal. read more

This place was busy on a Sunday afternoon! Overall experience was good. Service was a tad bit slow but they did their best and were very friendly. French toast: not too sweet which was good. I wish there was a little more fruit that it came with. The pandan coconut sauce was good but I think I prefer regular syrup. read more

We ordered breakfast carryout from here, and it was excellent! My favorites were the thai iced tea pancakes (so delicious and unique!!), and the potatoes that came with my partner's egg and toast breakfast. The eggs were cooked perfectly too when we ate--something particularly impressive to pull off since we picked it up and drove before eating. The restaurant itself is very cute-- decorated in kind of a citrus theme. It's small, with not a lot of seating which adds to the cozy effect. Our food wasn't ready until awhile after the estimated time, but it was a weekday and seemingly not at full staff, so not a huge issue. Wow! We checked out this place on a whim and were so impressed. Service was fantastic - the staff was so friendly, accommodating, and informative. Food came out quickly, and was really tasty and high quality. There are plenty of interior tables as well as a handful of outdoor seating options. You can get grapefruit juice, Thai tea, sparkling water, and a coffee in the same order. It's table service with ample parking. Seating is four top tables or booths. Pro: big parking lot, clean interior, friendly staff, clean bathroom. Con: none. While using the yelp app I happen to see that this new restaurant open weeks ago so, I save it for a later future visit and here I am. The restaurant is next to a food lion so the parking lot is big so no issue with finding a parking space. The inside is bright, clean, and modern which make for a great ambience for eating. After being seated for appetizer, we ordered the chicken satay and for the entree I had the pad see ew. The satay came out in four pieces and they were hot & juicy with every bite. My entree was decent but could a bit of an improvement. The pad see ew was a bite over seasoned. The staff was very fast and check in on us frequently to make sure everything was alright. All in all, I would recommend anyone to come and try this new restaurant. read more

Updating my review: the food is amazing. I am quite picky with Thai from cville and tangerine is in my top 3 now. The owner, Kitty Ashi, has owned and operated multiple Thai places in cville (monsoon, pineapples, maple pine, coconut Thai). All of them are good. I've found them all to be solid choices for Thai in cville. My two favorite Thai places here though are chimm and Chang. Chimm because it serves northern Thai, which is rarer in this area, and bc their Pho is my fav in Charlottesville (I know pho is viet but I find chimms to be just sooo good). Chang is my other favorite because their menu is so extensive and covers some more seafood dishes and they are incredibly consistent. Tangerine is going to be my favorite stop for we known dishes Thai like pad thai, pad see ew, and curry. Their menu is much shorter but focuses on well known classics. And they do them SO WELL! The pad Thai might be my favorite in cville (Thai fresh downtown was my fav for this for a long time but I haven't been back in a few years). Tangerines pad see ew is AMAZING! They totally nailed this dish. The red curry tastes exactly the way I want it to. 5/5 on all dishes. This is THE stop for well known staple Thai food. Inside the restaurant is cozy, the theme is simple and casual. Kitty said in an interview that she recognized the lack of Thai on this side of town and filled that need, but also played into the neighborhood vibe by keeping the experience lowkey and relaxed. It's located near Monticello high school and mill creek, so expect it to be family friendly, comfortable and casual. I'm saving one star to gauge tangerines consistency over time. My first review I found the food to be average, this may have been due to them opening that week and working out some kinks. The food I had today was easily some of the best in cville. We live an hour away from any place decent to eat and this was worth every mile. My BF and I have lived in a lot of major cities for decades so living out in the country now, has had some challenges, so we raced over after work for dinner because they have specific hours for service. We first tried the Curry Puffs, three came with the order, dumpling sized. They were delicate fried potato filled little pillows with a buttery crust with a light curry flavor. These are definitely bookmarked in my brain to always get these in the future. Maybe two orders because I might not want to share. I ordered a chicken Tom Ka Soup, and it was just simply amazing; the flavors were perfect, sweet, sour, creamy, and it had big slices of shaved young coconut. Very few places will go the extra mile to do that. It's like a tender noodle, even my BF tried it and loved it. He dislikes coconut and was in shock how much it doesn't resemble the artificial coconut smell and flavor. I could go on, but we have more food. My BF had the Pork Belly Numtok, it's a bright vinegar based dressed spring salad topped with a bold peppery grilled pork. So yummy and went well with the soup balancing out the meal so far. For our entrees, we had Chicken Massaman Curry and Chicken Drunken noodles. They ran out of the flat chewy noodles (bummer), but I really wanted to try it, so it was substituted with the Pad Thai noodle, and honestly it didn't matter, it was so darn good and a great spice level. The curry was definitely the star of the meal out of the two, thick, rich, creamy, nutty and perfect. It had so many layers of flavor and balanced. I've been searching for years trying to find a perfect Thai curry like this. I'm so happy to finally taste one like my friend's mother use to make. Very warm, homey and filling. Yeah, it's in a strip mall, but I'm finding out that a lot of amazing food in VA are hiding in plain sight. Service was attentive and kind. I don't really write reviews because I feel like I've eaten great food in a lot of places and I don't get moved too often, but I seriously NEED this place to do well. They have American Breakfast/Brunch for early service hours and then switch to Thai food for dinner service. They are closed between those hours. Bonus points: they are vegan and veg friendly which is marked on the menu. I've also recently become lactose intolerant, and this place is a great if you're tired of trying to figure that part out. I've lived in Charlottesville for 25 years, and this is the best brunch I've ever had here. Don't let the unassuming location or Thai/brunch combo throw you off. According to our resident expert, this newly opened restaurant is one of several Thai venues operated by the same family. It's tucked away in a shopping plaza down from the Food Lion. The interior is bright and welcoming, and several other diners were present on a Monday night (always a good sign). We tend to lean on our local Thai place, and stick to known favorites: green curry, red curry, and if those options are claimed by family members, then I default to yellow -which is good, but not at the level of the first two. Here, Khao Soi showed me that yellow curry can really shine. The curry was the star, for sure, floating a bird's nest of crispy fried rameen, and enveloping "normally prepared" ramen. They're convenient to all the apartment complexes on and off of Fifth st., so locals, check it out! read more

In a recent local article, owner and notable Charlottesville restauranteur Kitty Ashi described her vision for Tangerines Kitchen to fill the need for a high quality casual eatery in this part of town, and I think Tangerines Kitchen is definitely well-poised to do so! I visited during their soft opening and really enjoyed the breakfast food offerings. It came quickly and hot, and the service was great. Such a cute, quaint spot! Not the ideal location for a Thai restaurant, but it's location makes it a hidden gem, if anything. Service was quick and speedy despite there being only two servers. Food was AMAZING!! We got the: - Thai Ice Tea 5/5. You can never make this wrong, unless your proportions are drastically off! - Coconut Shrimp 5/5. Really like the dipping sauce it came with. It was coated very generously with breadcrumbs. Good to eat with the greens it was plated with. - Duck Taco 3/5. Comes with three! My cousin really loved this one, he considered getting it next time again. IMO there could definitely be more filling as the flour shell was too large for the filling and slightly overpowered the taste. The duck is really tender and doesn't have an odor to it. - Pad See Ew with Beef 4/5. Perfectly seasoned, just wish there was more to fill the plate! - Pork Belly Entree 5/5. SUPER YUMMY! Wow! This restaurant is a hidden gem. The food was fantastic. The eggs were light and fluffy, the potatoes were crispy and well seasoned, and the Tangerine's bacon is not to be missed. Definitely the best pancakes I've ever had! Pancakes were fluffy and didn't even need syrup, which is surprising. We also got the crab omelet which was very delicious.
