A Charlottesville staple if I've ever seen one. I remember coming here as a kid. Same exact restaurant as it was then. It was pleasant coming here as an adult. I got to see what I assume was a regular reading a newspaper at the table next to me. I don't even think he placed an order. The waitress just knew what he wanted. My friend and I went here for brunch! We decided to sit outside since it was super nice that day. Inside the restaurant it looks like a cute old timey diner. My friend got the Irish coffee that looked very sweet with the whipped cream on top. It was pretty strong! I started off with regular coffee which was typical diner coffee. Our waitress was really nice and attentive. We ordered and the food came out maybe 10-15 mins later. I got the Eggs Chesapeake breakfast with a crab cake, potatoes, choice of bread (I went with a biscuit) and choice of how you want your eggs (I said over easy). My crab cake was good but had lots of fillers. Potatoes were pretty tasty with some sauteed peppers and onions in them. My friend enjoyed her crab benedict as well. My friend and I came here for breakfast. They're located on the downtown mall so parking can be tricky but if you park at Market Street Garage it's right there which is nice. They have indoor and outdoor seating which is dog friendly. We decided to sit outside since it was nice out. They don't have any speciality coffee drinks or espresso so I just got water. They do have mimosas though and speciality cocktails. I tried the power house bowl which was okay. They were out of the basmati quinoa hash so it was pretty much just spinach and eggs which I didn't love. Thankfully I added the avocado slices so that gave it flavor and it did have some sweet potatoes in it which was good. I would come back and get something else though like try the omelette. We were on a fall colors drive and decided to pop in for a quick bite. Bad timing for us because it was the busiest part of their brunch rush. Food was delicious, staff was wonderful - the efficient hostess took our name and within 20 min our table of 4 was seated. All of is agreed the food was delicious and served quickly and hot. The tomato bisque was heavenly. If I had one quibble, it would for the hash. If I am paying $14-17 for a dish with "hash" in the name I am expecting more hash than the few dribbling of hash I was served. Maybe it was a portion control issue and it's normally a larger portion. Arrived at the nook around 11:30 on a beautiful fall Saturday and the down town mall was very lively! The nook offers both indoor and outdoor seating, (outside is dog friendly). There was about a 25-30 min wait but we were able to get seated much quicker. The inside is cute and quaint nothing extravagant. The wait staff were all incredibly friendly and attentive. We started with the spiced apple mimosa which was to die for, the cinnamon sugar rum was amazing and I was able to catch a good little buzz off of it before our food arrived. The menu offers lots of different options breakfast and non breakfast. We decided to go with breakfast items. The food was solid, nothing spectacular but satisfied our brunch craving. We were able to park in the market street deck and only paid $2 for about 2 hours of parking. This is a great little spot to grab brunch at on the down town mall! read more

This is a classic stop when on the downtown mall. The service was quick on a busy Saturday morning and the food was good. When visiting home it's hard to fit in all the good food places and I'm so happy I was able to make it here. The egg and cheese biscuit looked great along with the power bowl (both I couldn't get pictures of before they were devoured), there was a 45 minute wait for our party of 6 but we didn't mind because of the time of day (11:00am on a Saturday). We gave this place a try, and all three of us walked away with the same reaction: just not good. The food is marginal in quality, the dishes feel uninspired, and their "homemade" potatoes were greasy and cold. With so many great spots for breakfast, you're better off spending your time and money somewhere that actually delivers on flavor. read more

My hubby ordered the BLT, I ordered the napa salad with grilled chicken (addl $5), my former boss ordered the mahi mahi tacos, and her bf ordered the meatloaf sandwich. My salad was fine, but nothing special. It was a pretty basic salad. My husband had to ask for mayo on his BLT as it was inadvertently omitted. First off - I love the quaint town of Charlottesville. Everytime I visit my sister, I take a moment to reconsider where I want to end up living after college. I love small town feels and cozy cafe ambience. Downtown is especially entertaining with the different artsy shops & delicious coffees! My sister recommended us take a look at The Nook. First things first - you gotta add yourself on the waitlist ASAP or make a reservation because it is always PACKED... which is a good thing because it means the food is TOP QUALITY. I shared their seasonal pancakes with my mom as well as the breakfast plate to try their blueberry pancakes and get some protein in. Their batter is indeed famous. And their portions are HUGE. You will be enjoying them for a day or two moreso (trust me - I eat A LOT as a super active person and I still could not finish half the pancakes!). Excited to go back further explore their menus... Here's the deal...we had to wait 10 minutes for seating...not too bad. We had to wait quite a while for our server to take our order. They were out of a number of things...not terrible, but disappointing. The El Dorado cocktail was a treat. Quite excellent. Floral on the nose, and sweet and refreshing- just needed more of it ;-). The omelette was properly cooked, but the breakfast potatoes were soft and looked boils not baked, so that was interesting. The Reuben was pretty darn good, and the Poutine Tots were plenty for 4 people to enjoy. My Fiancé and I walked in and waited by the host stand. Keep in mind this is a random Tuesday morning and it is not too busy. This woman comes up and we tell her there are just two of us and he asked if we could have a booth. The woman told us "sorry, we only do sections", so he again asked if we could be placed in a booth (I'm pregnant and we just prefer booths) and she said no again, and said they take turns (we have both worked in food service so this is something we understand). Well third time was the charm, because she said "Fine. You'll get a booth" very angrily, stormed over to the booth (which there happen to be 5+ open) and quite LITERALLY THROWS our menus and silverware onto the table and without speaking or sparing us a glance. She then goes to her ONE of two tables and cheerily says "HEY YALL how are we doin?!". I personally am very confused, I am pregnant and was just excited to eat and sit down. Never have I ever been treated with so much undeserved disrespect or shame for wanting to sit at a booth. We ended up not even sitting down, handed the thrown menu and silverware to the other waitress and explained the situation before we left. Also shoutout to the other waitress who was so sweet and genuinely baffled by the other woman's behavior. read more

Brunch with my lady. On our way there, we realized their website says they take reservations so I thought we were screwed. Oh contrare! We walked up and asked for a table for 2, FIFTEEN MINUTES. Yes I spelled 15. On a packed Sunday morning with good smells coming out of the kitchen, it was meant to be. We went with a savory and a sweet item from the menu: western omelette and berries and cream stuffed French toast. They did not disappoint. Western omelette ($14) is described on their menu as "Black Forest smoked ham, red & green bell peppers and onions, cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses" with breakfast potatoes on the side. Omelettes are fool proof. The fillings were great. It's what you expect from an omelette. The breakfast potatoes were good, wished it had more of a crisp to each bite instead of it feeling soggy. Berries and Cream stuffed fresh toast ($14) was GOOOOOD. It's LOOADED dude. Thick pieces of their "Classic artisan bread French Toast stuffed with sweet Mascarpone cream cheese and macerated strawberries topped a blueberry-strawberry medley" is the bees knees. Now add their "Vermont pure maple syrup" on top and it's just chef's kiss. A lot of anecdotes to a great sweet dish should convince you to try it. Did I mention yet that they have Kona coffee? It's coffee from the big Hawaiian island. It hits different AND taste like I'm back in Maui. It literally transported my wife and I back to Maui, a place we miss so much. It has a deep taste and reminds me of cocoa and brown sugar with a nice hit of acidity out in front. Bottom line: this spot on the downtown walking mall is great. If you call in on a busy morning (which I would assume it is mainly on the weekend), then you might not get answered. Instead, go in and place your name for a spot in line to dine in. While I'm sure there are places that competes with The Nook, they will hold a place in my heart for the Kona coffee [that I'm sure you can get at the grocery store] they serve in a cool diner. Service was good. Setting was nice. But our breakfast was just plain bad. Ingredients seemed low quality. Potatoes tasted frozen--not fresh. Omelette needed seasoning and flavor. And $17 for a basic breakfast. Way too much. But even if pricing was lower, I wouldn't recommend. This place needs to rethink some things. It's a good breakfast place and they are thoughtful in having outdoor heaters for those that don't want to sit indoors (they do currently have indoor seating available). The outdoor seating area is blocked off and perfect for a meal out. In this current climate it's nice to know that you have many options for dining. The breakfast platter is perfect for when you are hungry... I added the single blueberry pancake on the side of the Chesapeake breakfast platter. I was a bit hesitant about ordering crab cakes at a breakfast joint but was given a recommendation by the wait staff. I enjoyed every bite and really loved being able to sit with my wife next to the heater to be as careful as possible during the pandemic.
