Today I had an experience I've become accustomed to when shopping at Maple Leaf ACE Hardware. I was greeted within seconds of walking in the door. (I think I made it 30 feet and about 20 seconds before being greeted once right before a storm.) I needed 5 items for 4 different projects that were all on different aisles. The staffperson walked with me to each aisle to help me find the first 3 items. When she wasn't sure if they had the 4th, she passed me off to someone who knew that part of the store better who was able to help me find what I needed. He was also able to help me pick out the correct type of grease for my project. The parking lot was nearly full, but since they had all the cash registers working, I was able to pay for my items very quickly. I got home less than 15 minutes after I left the house. The only time I ever go to another hardware store is when they don't carry an item that I need, and that's very seldom. I wish more businesses provided the same consistently outstanding level of service that these folks do. read more

Wow, I'm surprised I haven't reviewed Maple Leaf ACE before now. I love this store. They are all about service, service, service. The staff are very knowledgeable and often advise me how to do whatever project I'm doing. And for the size of the store it's remarkable how often they have what I need. Occasionally they don't and they tell me I need to go to Home Depot or Lowes, and then I am sad because I feel depressed just walking into one of those places. Whereas I feel happy when I walk into Maple Leaf ACE. Because of that I absolutely don't mind paying the slightly higher prices. Because the whole point of living is to be happy. read more

If you have shopped at the big box stores and *tried* to find an employee at some point to ask a question, only to get a shoulder shrug or a blank stare in response. This is your place! There is an abundance of incredibly helpful employees who actually APPROACH you and ask if you need help! The great part is that, when you ask that question, they have a good answer! I recently went there while in the middle of a project putting up outdoor lighting and needed a fairly specialized tool. This tool would have been $25 - $30 and I probably would only have used it once in my lifetime. They did not have the tool to purchase, but had one that they rented me for $6! Doesn't get any better than that! I always like to support neighbor hood establishments anyway, but Ace Hardware on Roosevelt makes it easy! I've been shopping here for years, but finally just needed to say, "you guys are absolutely fantastic!" The generalities: EVERY time I have come in staff are available, friendly and knowledgable. If someone's helping me and doesn't really have an answer for me, they readily admit it and call for someone who does. They have never attempted to sell me anything but what I actually need for my project. In fact quite the opposite, they regularly talk me out of buying something more expensive than I need, explaining how I can fix something rather than replace it. The specifics: For example, just today I went in to replace a malfunctioning mechanism for the toilet and an employee (Brian) helped me by showing how rather than replace the piece I could fix it simply. He opened one up for me and walked me through how to repair what I had back at home. Just one of many examples of why everyone in Maple Leaf (and surrounding areas) should always come here first! And a shout out to the owners/management that take such amazing care of their employees that they stay around and are able to share years of wisdom and expertise with customers. read more

Yes it's more expensive than the big stores over on Aurora but it's so convenient to have this option in the neighborhood. And I hardly ever have to wait for someone to be available to answer questions. They're also very dog friendly. read more

I come here once in a while, usually things are great. I have no idea what the young man's problem was who called me over when I was standing in the check out line. Nice not to wait another 30 seconds, but really I should have said "no thanks" to this kind of help. He told me he would help me "around the corner." Which, I don't work there, I don't know what corner he is talking about & thought he might have walked to a register because he then ducked out of sight. I started to walk down the counter - thinking the corner might be *gasp* some place in the sight line of the other 10 cash registers. He then yells "AROUND THE CORNER." I laughed ok, wrong corner I guess. Stone faced & snotty, he snapped that there was only 1 corner here. Imagine that! A building with only 1 corner. Truly a miracle of modern construction. Seriously, I did think yelling at me & then giving me a snotty & sarcastic reply was out of line. It was embarrassing. He is either too socially impaired to deal with the public, or he was being deliberately nasty. I did call & speak to a manager. Colossal waste of time. Made it clear that I was complaining about nothing, and then asked "Well, did anything ELSE go wrong with the transaction?" Apparently telling a customer off & smirking at her foolishness at not knowing the layout of the employees cashier area is just fine. Then he told me that this sort of thing just doesn't happen at their store, I am not sure if he meant typicall,y or if he was telling me I was making it up. I have no idea if this really was a manager or the young socially inept & arrogant young man involved in the incident. One thing is certain, if the manager sets the tone of the store & expected standard of customer service - it's no wonder the bar is set so low on what is expected in basic courtesy towards customers. read more

The staff at Maple Leaf ACE is top notch, knowledgeable and are great teachers. I recently had the best experience with Ron, who has been working there for decades. He taught me how to hang a picture on my plaster walls- explaining the reasons why not to pound a nail, what to feel for when things were going right or wrong...so much detail. So much valuable education for buying just a few nails and a drill bit. He asked me to send some pictures of my success and so I have attached them for him. If you wanted to build and decorate your own unicorn, the unbelievably helpful and knowledgeable people working at this store would be able to cheerfully assist you in the process. I'm not kidding. They'd be all like, "Well, first you're going to need to know if you want to make a pneumatic or a hydraulic unicorn. I can tell you the pros and cons of each, and then send you over to the paint department where Jane will help you choose which sparkly color to use for the horn. You'll want to consider an outdoor, weatherproof paint for that." And then, they'd collect all of the pieces of your project, package them neatly, and meet you at the front register with helpful pamphlets called "The Plus Side of Rechargeable Unicorns" and "Weaving Realistic Unicorn Fur By Hand". Sure, you'll pay about 15% more for your unicorn components here, but it will be worth it because of the knowledge and "can do" attitude you'll receive from every single person who works at this store. I lurv this hardware store! I can't help it. Not only do the rows and rows of well-organized doo-dads, gadgets, widgets and tools (not to mention actual hardware!) sing sweet come-hither siren songs to the little tinkerer I usually keep buried deep in my belly, but the staff here is always, always, always really friendly and unconscionably helpful. It actually makes it a little difficult to wander the aisles fingering said doo-dads, gadgets etc while daydreaming about that tool bench I could put in the basement - you almost can't turn a corner without one or sometimes two employees smiling at you and asking "finding everything you need?" "Yes, yes, so far... I'm just wandering around now trying to figure out what I'm forgetting." They understand. read more

I spend as much time in hardware stores as I do in bookstores, so I'm always keeping an eye out for locally owned hardware stores. I'm glad these mom and pop hardware stores are still around in Seattle. I was only in here to make an extra set of keys, but I walked the store while my keys were being made. Looks like they're already gearing up for spring time. The store is stocked wall to wall with anything you may need to work on your fixeruper or your garden. The prices are on an average a bit higher, but I rather fork out the extra bucks here than save a few at Home Depot. The store is only a few blocks from my house, so I'll soon be making many trips for my veggie and herb garden. More updates to come soon. read more

Hardware stores are scary to me. Put me in one and I'm as lost as I would be on Mars. A recent move required me to visit several hardware stores in search of paint supplies and ACE in Maple Leaf is by far the best experience I've had. I was in search of Clark & Kensington paint (highly recommended by Consumer Reports) and the Tweedy & Pop in Wallingford didn't have it, even though the websites say that ACE carries this brand. Upon entering the store, I was greeted by several customer service people all lined up like the welcome wagon. The guy knew exactly what I'd wanted and seemed genuinely concerned about my painting project, when I asked about filling up holes in wood doors and window frames with spackle. (I'm a cut corners kinda gal and he wanted me to fill with spackle, sand AND prime, as well as wash down the trim well with TSP beforehand, when I thought maybe the viscous paint would be enough to fill the little holes, so I wouldn't have to do any of that.) After the personable service clerk, I went to the check out stand which was staffed by a personable cashier, who proceeded to print out a receipt that was as long as my arm, even though I'd only purchased a gallon of paint. Apparently there was some survey about their service I should answer. I'll definitely give it a glowing review. read more

Since 2003, when we had our Koi pond put in and after losing some fish to raccoons, I have been trying to figure out the best way to keep raccoons away from our garden. The automatic motion / heat sensing, sprinkler heads called Scarecrows keep house cats away but don't do much to keep "pole cats" away other than warn us they are at the pond. I've since done extensive research and I found Shake-Away Deer Repellent on the Internet. It is made of crystallized Coyote urine. Coyotes are a predator of the raccoon and raccoons won't hangout in their territory so, it works like a charm. But where to get some around here so I can use it right away? Ace Hardware, of course. Now, for people not old enough to remember when milk trucks delivered milk and other dairy items to houses, when service stations had uniformed attendants that filled your tank, washed your, windows, checked and refilled your car's fluids, and when family owned grocery stores and hardware stores were the norm, Maple Leaf Ace Hardware will give you a taste of what customer service was like then. They are very friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and down-home. Furthermore, they have more of a select but thoughtful array of items than say a Lowes or a Home Depot. I mean, items that I actually need and wouldn't normally think of in one of the major hardware stores because, who has the time to traverse the huge super stores to see what is available there? I know I don't. The Bottom line is simply this, next time you need a hardware or household item, check out Ace Hardware. walk down each aisle. If you are like me, you think wow, Lowes or Home Depot doesn't even carry this, and I guarantee, you will leave the store with at least one item, you will be happy you experienced Ace Hardware, their friendly staff, customer service with a smile and, you will be back. read more

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Maple Leaf Ace. This place is absolutely one of the best hardware stores in Seattle, if not ever. It's been our go-to hardware store for just about everything since we've lived in the neighborhood nearly five years. Our most recent experience was just yesterday with the paint department (which we hadn't worked with before). We are re-painting one of our bedrooms from a hideous shade of gold to nice light blue. LInda (who has worked there as long as I have lived in the neighborhood) was a HUGE help. She not only helped us pick out a white, she also suggested some excellent pro painting tips, including excellent suggestions for painting over a darker color, which have helped us immensely. I also am very pleased that Ace carries the Mythic paint brand. It's really nice to get non-toxic, no-VOC paint from your neighborhood hardware store, rather than having to drive 30+ minutes to Ecohaus (which is also great, but let's face it, their staff just aren't as helpful). I highly recommend ACE for paint. I have used them over the years and received constantly good service. They treat you personally, do great color matching and are always quick to offer service. I seldom get through the door without being directed or escorted to the product I am looking for. Its not the biggest store around, its not for supplies for your whole remodel but its the corner store of hardwares that I can drop in on 5 times a weekend and always get the "little thing" I am looking for. I have enjoyed every visit I have here. Staff is helpful, the aisles are clean and well-organized, and I have generally been able to find what I need. Sometimes they might not have every widget or weird thing in stock (50-lb mirror hanger clips were a no-go) but they can special order or tell you where else to go. Maple Leaf Ace is my local hardware store and I absolutely LOVE this place. Any time I have a little project around the house, I go here. The staff immediately greet me and ask how they can help. They always have the answers I need, and make my trip an in and out, (though I often prefer to browse all the aisles, you never know what you can find!) A little pricier than the big-box stores, but it's totally worth it for the amazing customer service. Plus, this is a family business. It feels good to support small local businesses!! The NICEST hardware store folks in the area. Maybe even in Seattle. I go here to ask questions and get glass cut and every single time I am greeted by friendly, helpful staff. Ace Hardware stores tend to be more local, but Stephenson takes the cake in terms of feeling pretty neighborly. They have a housewares section, Dremel bits, plumbing stuff and more. I don't feel intimidated because of my lack of knowledge, either...and no one talks down to me cause I'm a woman (you'd be surprised how many hardware stores are like that!). read more

We love this hardware store. Most notably- we purchased an electric trimmer that just never worked right. After about 9 mos of struggling with it, I went to the store for some new parts, thinking I'll try and fix it. The sales person told me they'd had lots of problems with that particular model, and so he gave me a brand new trimmer, at no charge. You can't beat that for customer service. The staff is friendly, available, and they know what they are talking about. You can hardly get one of those traits at the big bog stores, much less all three! The store is dog friendly, has an ample treat supply. When they don't stock what I need (which) is rare, they are able to refer me to a supplier who does. Thanks you guys! read more

5 stars! Whoo hoo!! Like many people here said it, I love this store. This place might be smaller side but it has everything you need! I almost cry with joy when I found "Ove Glove" which I couldn't find anywhere. I bought for my lovely hubby so that he doesn't get burn when he BBQ. I don't want my lovely hubby to gets hurt. Nobody does. I like the neighborhood feeling. People there are really nice. They are always willing to help you especially when you look lost in the store, and if I have a heavy stuff in my shopping cart, someone always come and wants to assist you to the car. If their help was little too late, they even apologize that makes me want to apologize. You guys are too nice! You can bring your doggie to the store that is a big plus because when you are walking your dog, you realize you needed buy something. One request though...I wish if they are open little longer. I love it. They have sweet printed keys in the key cutting department and about 1,000 key ring options. At xmas time they have loads of weird decorations and candles and things with angels painted on them. Got a put-together-yourself candle burning christmas decoration that spins for $3.99. Yes they have it - and if they don't - they'll order it for you. I've gotten bolts, painting gear, tool chests, sanding blocks, glue, anything I need for the infinite parade of tasks at my house. When I want help, I get help, they know where *everything* is in a moment, it's quite impressive. Plenty of parking, and a good location - it's not the closest hardware store to my house - but they have everything I need. I'd rather shop here than anywhere else. read more

Dog friendly, people friendly, locally owned and great sales. We are here every other weekend in the spring and summer and maybe fall. Oh well, there are worse things to do with part of your Saturday. You couldn't pay me enough to spend my Saturday at Home Depot unless I needed a sink or something. They always have the ball blue book, canning jars, the cool rectangular freezer containers that your grandma would have used to freeze stuff and marked with a wax pencil. Good place for stocking stuffers as well. I think I'll be there this weekend. Oh yeah, they did a great job rescreening our front screen door and they cut glass. read more

Employees here are really helpful and Im always pleasantly surprised by the variety of things they have in the relatively small store. As much as I have enjoyed this store in the past few years, the final impetus to write a review was because of the interaction I had recently with one of their employees: Ash. I don't know what I'd do without my Maple Leaf Ace Hardware store! I wouldn't describe myself as a talented fixer upper, green thumb or creative, but the staff at this store helps me fake it very well. Walking in with pictures from Pinterest recently, I was approached by one of the employees and asked if I needed help. I flashed a picture of an outdoor project I wanted to try and he laughed "Pinterest, right? Ok, let's see how we can make this happen." I found the tools and other supplies I needed, and with the opinions and tips of many other employees I went home and worked on my garden project with fun and ease. What makes this store so special is the atmosphere of the employees. When I walk in I feel like I'm walking into someone's home, surrounded by helpful family members. They're not just warm, but funny and help me remain in my budget. They're also honest--if they don't have something that will work for my projects, they'll apologize and brainstorm together, so I can find what I need. I've visited a number of ACE Hardware stores around Seattle, but this one is the best. So happy they're in my neighborhood! read more

HOLY COW, is this a great place. I walked in and was greeted as I walked in; I asked where I could find an item and was walked right to it. I dithered around a bit for my next item; and voilá, I was asked by another helper if I needed to find something. He led me to that. Snagged it, & asked a third helper where something else was. Bam! Led to it, and up to the register. I haven't had service like this since I was in Japan in the 1990s!! My whole visit took 10 minutes. Unbelievable! read more

I'll start out by saying that my customer service expectations are high. Very high. Astronomical, even. I feel if I'm going to hand over my hard-earned dollar, I'd better be happy doing it. That being said, I can not find a way to express my level of elation the first time I experienced this Ace location. Customer service euphoria!!! We all know if you want to pay the least for your items, the big stores are where you go. This Ace is not only competitively priced and well stocked (especially considering their limited square footage,) but I would be happy to pay QUADRUPLE the big store's prices to shop here. I have yet to stump their staff with any request, from where is such-and-such to what would you suggest I use to do X? They always know. ALWAYS. They also have a PHENOMENAL fastener section. Being a mobile auto mechanic, sometimes I need a really oddball fastener, and I have never left that store without what I needed or a comparable substitute. Keep up the good work, guys! I've always loved the service here. The staff are very attentive and often get you right when you show up. Although this place isn't as big as Home Depot, you also don't have to buy as much. What I find most useful is their huge selection of screws and bolts, which you can buy bulk or individually (can't do this at Home Depot). I've fixed many things that require only a new screw or two and this place has been wonderful for that! read more
