Second time around with a large group on a Friday night. This time went much smoother. We were seated promptly. An interesting flower based martini was poured for us, not too sugary. Martinis aren't my thing really, but it was nice. We once again enjoyed a warm seafood tower. This is a winner! Have yet to see it on a menu elsewhere in town, so definitely check it out on your visit. We split most items as a group this time. The other highlights were the 28 day dry aged ribeye, sliced to share. It's rare that I go back for more steak, but that was amazing! I do love lamb, however, & the lamb chops did not disappoint. Cooked to perfection & served warm. We also tried the wedge salad, chateaubriand (with a garlic sauce made to make your mouth water), asparagus, mashed potatoes, & more mushrooms. Don't leave without getting those mushrooms! They are made in heaven. Mason was our server this time. He was terrific! Polite, prompt, funny, & attentive. Happy to have experienced a better time around! Maple & Ash is definitely still a hot spot in town. If you feel like dressing up, or going out to one of the trendier places in town were a good number go to "be seen", this is your steak house! If you want a quieter evening where there isn't a crowd, don't come here on the weekend. It's a hot spot for a reason, and once you try the seafood tower & mushrooms, you'll be hooked for good! My god was this place good. Went for a business dinner and had a great time. The service was impeccable, and a great ambiance- with the exception of the extremely loud and beating music. The food was great- seafood tower is a heavy recommend, and definitely grab a steak. My steak was just a bit below my asked medium rare, but I didn't mind it, because the marinade and sear was incredible. We got a ton of sides and they were enough to share with our 7 person table. And the desserts- wow! Grab the bombe for sure- so excellent and an amazing table service show! Would definitely come back again for a visit to Chicago. read more

I've been gathering my bearings to write this review, because this was one of my favorite meals of all time (and I dine out A LOT, like way more than I should). I should preface this by saying I was here for a James Beard Foundation/Young Winemakers tasting event, so I cannot speak to a regular reservation. That being said, the service, the space, and the food was all Maple & Ash. AMBIANCE: 4.8/5 The space is stunning - it's romantic and moody and straight up sexy. The private room we were in was enclosed by tinted glass doors that looked on to the rest of the dining room, which I thought was decorated tastefully and elegantly. My only gripe is the noise level - with a full restaurant (and you best believe it's usually full), it can be difficult to hear the people you're with. FOOD: 5/5 Oh. My. God. You guys, I seriously couldn't calm down for 48 hours after this meal. Each course was better than the next, I was just blown away. For the 1st course, we got a fire roasted seafood tower, which was absolutely delicious. The manila clams and scallops were to die for, and I wanted to lick the platter. The 2nd course was my favorite, by far, which was the housemade ricotta agnolotti with a winter truffle conserve. Oh yes, there were shaved truffles on top with some light truffle oil infused into the pasta. The pasta was somehow al dente yet soft and pillowy simultaneously, and I'm drooling thinking about it. On to course 3, we got 28 day dry-aged ribeye with a bone marrow au jus and a side of whipped buttered mashed potatoes which I legitimately did lick off the spoon... the steak was cooked nice and medium rare, but the cut of meat itself was a little fatty for my taste. And finally, the dessert. I don't particularly have a sweet tooth, but this apple galette with honey & earl gray ice cream was incredible. I finished every last bite even though I was filled to the brim. SERVICE: 5/5 The service was excellent with friendly hosts to greet and say goodbye, water and wine was always filled promptly, and every server was very pleasant. This has become a tourist trap. Our last meal was accompanied by the hostess squirting our table (of 20) with a Champange machine gun. This was a classy place that is now not much better than Carlos and Charlie's. Additionally I had asked for a different side dish, our waiter said he selected for the table, and was old "you should find something that I selects acceptable" in other words I did not get what I wanted. My steak was chewy and not done right. All this for a dinner that cost us (20 people) $175.00 per person. This appears to not be enough money to get what you want served to you. Didn't even eat there but I'm still giving it one star. Went to book a birthday dinner for 6 people and they wanted a $600 deposit. If we only spend $400 they keep the extra $200. Please note, after I gave a bad review, Maple & Ash commented acting like they cared and would do something. I sent an email to them as they requested. I do not get any response back. Only after I sent another email almost 2 weeks later another person responded stating they were "picking up the ball where they had left off" and said sorry and hopefully I will patronize their restaurant again. I went here recently for a patio dinner. The food was delightful from start to finish. Unfortunately, it did not feel like their covid protocols were being followed by all the staff. We had a busboy come over multiple times with a his mask half down his face. We ate at their patio restaurant and had a great experience, so we were excited to make a reservation at their main indoor venue the next time we were in Chicago. To make reservations, they required a $100 deposit per person, which was higher than any deposit for a reservation for a restaurant that we have done, but we did it knowing we'd inevitably spend over that anyway. We arrived at the restaurant and it was beautiful and filled with ambience. They told us to wait at the bar while they prepared our table. The bar area was very energetic, but a little too energetic. Music was so loud we couldn't hear each other talk. It wasn't necessary. There was a large buzzy crowd that kept the atmosphere up without high volume music. It felt more like a club than a restaurant. After 30 minutes passed, we checked on our table. They said some people were just taking a while to leave their table but they should have us back any minute now. Well, after an hour and a half, we were debating leaving. But, we'd paid $100 deposits each, so we were trapped. They finally took us to our table, and they did comp us an expensive appetizer, so we were ready to move past the long wait. The table was beautiful with the stunning candelabra. And the meal was good. But it wasn't great. And it was one of the most expensive meals we've ever had. We travel regularly and like to try Michelin starred restaurants, and would have been okay with an expensive meal had the experience lived up to it. But nothing really wowed us other than the candelabra. It wasn't a first class experience. It was loud, over the top, and overpriced. We won't be back and won't recommend it. Upon arrival we were impressed with the decor and atmosphere. We ordered several dishes to share: foie gras pate, scallops, salmon tartare, cowgirl steak, the volcano, and sautéed broccolini. Foie gras pate had good flavor but it was not as good as seared foie gras. Scallops were cooked perfectly. Salmon tartare lacked some seasoning. The steak was cooked perfectly medium rare. The volcano was rich and flavorful. Sautéed broccolini was very tasty. For the dessert, we had a macaroon with vanilla ice cream and it was so delicious without being very sweet. Four of five meals were placed. No news about the last meal so we waited and waited. Eventually an apology with no real explanation. Probably happens routinely. The restaurant eventually delivered and then comped the missing meal. A manager apologized and was attentive for the remainder. We went for their Sunday brunch and were blown away! I was a little irritated at first because we'd made a reservation and were seated almost 30 minutes past our reservation time. That was a major strike. In the interim, we had drinks at the bar and although the bartender wasn't particularly helpful or friendly, the drinks were excellent. We were looking forward to celebrating my son's graduation this past Friday for lunch (a reservation I had booked over a month in advance). We arrived to an empty restaurant and the news that the restaurant was closed due to a plumbing issue. There was no phone call or direct communication about this sudden closing. I was only provided with a solution upon demanding one. The manager gave the unsatisfactory excuse that the restaurant did not have a phone and communication should have been made through their call center. I've been privileged to eat at many 5 star restaurants across this country and I just found my favorite at 8 West Maple here in Chicago. Like the guest to service ratio like five star resorts this place has significant professional help that are pleasant and well-trained. They are all a first rate team. I used to like the place: nice ambiance and good food. Until yesterday. They pour complimentary cocktails for each guest. However, the coupe glass my husband had was broken, FEW MILLIMETERS PIECE OF GLASS WAS OUT. I did not have my phone to photo that and for some reason i haven't ask the restaurant to somehow document this fact. My husband took a sip when he noticed the glass was broken. He said it felt like margarita cocktail salt. When I tried to touch the glass, it felt like the glass was crumbling. My husband feels some pain in his stomach today and I am really scared it may be connected to small particle of the glass he might have swallowed. The trouble is, if it a very small piece of glass it is not even noticeable on x-ray. I wonder, how the staff could not notice such a damaged glass while setting the table. read more

GAH. I want to give this place a five star so bad. I really do. My girlfriend and I came all the way from LA and I know there's a big steak scene going on in Chicago so I definitely wanted to try the best of the best. There's a very nice bar downstairs with some IDGAF hats for sale by the entrance, and when you walk all the way to the end there's a coat check station before you take the elevator to the restaurant on the 2nd floor. We were seated immediately and a very nice hostess greeted us and asked for our names, which made the dining experience personal. Moments later, she came back with a menu printed with "Happy Anniversary" with our names on it! Super smart idea and very good advertisement by the way. She was very helpful and explained each section of the menu with great details. Needless to say, service was ON. POINT. I was telling my girlfriend that I love watching them work because of how smooth the service was running. Everybody was just efficient and super effective. When my girlfriend left for the restroom and the food came, they had a food plate cover on the ready. Service and atmosphere was out the world. Perfect. Food on the other hand was... okay? We started off with the oysters in half shells, which was very good and fresh. No complaints there. Foie gras was good, smooth and melt in the mouth but.. bland? I haven't tried too many foie gras before so I can't judge if it's suppose to be that way, but I know if I came again, I probably won't order it. We got the 28 day dry aged rib eye which I was super excited about, but to be honest, I didn't taste that big of a difference between dry aged or not. I feel like the cut of the steak wasn't well marbled or wasn't fatty enough because that's where all of the flavors come from for dry-aged steak. When we do get the one/two small pieces of fat in the steak, BOOM, explosion of flavor. But most of the time, it just tasted..kind of bland? The sides we ordered were mushrooms and asparagus which were also just...okay. Did the sides stand out from other sides in steak houses? Not really.. Coconut pie for dessert was impressively...long. But did the flavors really wow me? Not really either.. I feel like all of the dishes were good, but when you're paying "$$$$" at a steakhouse, the flavors should POP. I should be able to remember what I had after coming back to L.A. To be honest, this is the first time I've remembered more about service than the food. And that's the part that makes me sad, because I wanted to love it, but I couldn't. Honestly no idea what the big deal is, went there for a birthday dinner with daughter, very standard and in some cases sub standard food. Had the bone in dry aged strip, good not great, especially for $80, daughter had a filet, trimmed down to the size of a quarter. Sides were mediocre too, Brussels sprouts were meh, Mac and cheese was nothing special, fries were good but a small cup of fries were $10. Desert was nicely presented but again kind of standard, considering a slice of chocolate cake was $30!!!! Absolute worst experience I've ever had. This place has gone downhill since when it first opened (was one of my favorite spots) and the management is completely inept. They are trying to be a bar and a restaurant at the same time and need to pick one or the other because they clearly can't manage being both, and don't have the space for it. Trying to eat dinner with 100 people standing around your table is idiotic. Maybe reduce the number of people you let in? Seems like common sense, but this place is run by people without any sense at all. Went for my birthday and my birthday was ruined by incompetence. We were not seated for over an HOUR after our reservation time, had an entire pitcher of water poured in our laps, never met our waiter or was told his name, didn't get introduced to what food we would be eating (it was a preset menu, and they just plopped it on the table), and then we're served a $3000 bill with 20% gratuity added and not a single discount even after the manager "Johnny" said he would "take care of us". Then, some aggressive dude comes up to the table and says "how can I help you????"--like I was being a burden. I told him Johnny was helping us and he literally said "he doesn't have the authority to help you." The dude is a manager, so I'm lost. Also as a business leader, undermining your own colleague to your customers... terrible idea. We finally got the gratuity removed and a semi-reasonable discount on the meal, but it took about 45 minutes of back and forth to get it accomplished. As if it couldn't get any worse, the food made half of us sick--I spent the rest of my night almost bowled over in agony. We ended up losing our table at the club we went to after because we were TWO HOURS LATE (thanks to wasting an hour waiting for the table, and then dinner taking 3 hours because of how inefficient it was) and nobody had a good time. Wasted thousands of dollars and an entire night on these clowns. My brother's girlfriend is in the industry and contacted the owner and we never heard back. Guess they didn't care that they collectively completely failed at their job that evening. Plenty of other restaurants in Chicago, you guys are a joke. A gem in Chicago! Maple and Ash is an experience, the atmosphere, the decor, the drinks and especially the food are all awesome. The staff really go above and beyond to make the experience something to remember. I regularly bring clients here for business dinners and they are blown away every time. I love the grilled octopus and meatballs on the apps list, any red meat on the menu is out of this world, my personal favorite is the short rib strogonoff.
