Came here for restaurant week! Very cool spot, very modern, the bar was stunning! Service was good throughout but it took about 30 minutes for our waitress to get us the check, but it was busy! To start I got a dirty martini. This was great! I like how they leave the shaker to top it off as well! The bread service was okay, nothing crazy. The French onion soup was great and it was a big portion. I like when it doesn't have a ton of cheese and this one had the perfect ratio. I got a 8oz filet cooked medium rare. This was cooked perfectly! A very good filet. We added on the lobster mashed potatoes. Sadly these were not for me. It was heavy on shells, I really didn't like the mashed potatoes texture and having to pick shells out. For dessert I got the cheesecake. This was great! I gave Mastro's Steakhouse Chicago three stars solely because the service was good. We ordered the filet, a twice-baked potato, and dessert. The filet was cooked correctly and was tender, but overall, the food was average and bland. The sides were decent, nothing memorable. For what is widely considered the most expensive steakhouse in the city, the food simply did not deliver the level of quality or execution I expect from a true five-star steakhouse What really ruined the experience for me, however, was the complete lack of ambiance. Mastro's publicly states that it prides itself on offering an elegant, memorable dining experience and clearly outlines an upscale dress code meant to maintain a sophisticated atmosphere. Unfortunately, that policy was not enforced at all. Guests were dressed in sweatpants, extremely revealing outfits, baseball caps, and clothing more appropriate for a casual chain restaurant. The disconnect between the stated dress code and what was actually allowed in the dining room was shocking. When you're paying premium prices, ambiance matters just as much as food and service. Instead of feeling refined or special, the room felt chaotic and cheapened by the lack of standards. It genuinely detracted from the entire experience and left a bad taste in my mouth. I had been wanting to try Mastro's for a long time, and this visit was a major letdown. At this price point, expectations are high, and unfortunately, Mastro's Chicago did not meet them. The space feels luxurious, visually appealing, and the service aligns well with that expectation. From a vibe standpoint alone, this is easily a 5-star setting. Unfortunately, the food itself was quite underwhelming given the hype and price point. Here's what I ordered: * Calamari * Spicy Mambo Salad * Dry-Aged Bone-In Ribeye * Wagyu Tallow French Fries * Lobster Mashed Potatoes * Garlic Truffle Cauliflower The calamari was disappointing -- honestly, I've had better at Carrabba's. The Spicy Mambo Salad was fine, but be prepared: it has a strong horseradish-style kick that really hits your nose. The Dry-Aged Bone-In Ribeye was simply okay. The kitchen nailed the medium-rare temperature, but flavor-wise it felt flat. It seems like you need to add one of the topping enhancements for it to really shine, which shouldn't be necessary at this level. The lobster mashed potatoes were fairly generous with the lobster, but overall bland. The garlic truffle cauliflower felt overcooked and could really benefit from some sort of sauce to elevate it. And lastly, F is for Fries -- extremely overpriced. Yes, you get a bucket of them, but I honestly would've rather had Chick-fil-A fries. Overall, while the atmosphere and service are strong, the food didn't justify the cost for me. I likely wouldn't rush back anytime soon. We sat in the bar area so we were able to watch some sports games. I went with the tuna sashimi followed by the filet and ended with the cheesecake. Each course came out on schedule which was nice. Sashimi was spot on with a great sweet sauce and jalapeño. The filet was a perfect medium rare and very tender. It comes out on the plate it was cooked on so be careful it's super hot. I came to Mastro's on Thanksgiving Day for an early meal and to watch the football game at the bar. The bartender was friendly and on point, and the Assistant GM Che came by and was super cool. The staff was extremely attentive and accommodating. My friend and I requested to share the lobster bisque and the waiter was quick to say that wouldn't be a problem. They served it to us in separate dishes. Additionally, I requested a cocktail to be made with a different liquor and they were able to do that as well. Reservation for 9 was cancelled because the credit card was declined. The mistake was quickly fixed by the Maitre'd (that's why you need them). Live music that was incredible. Food including complimentary bread basket and soft butter was amazing. Tuna sashimi was high grade tuna in a spicy brown sauce. While the tuna didn't need the peppery sauce, soaking up the sauce with the bread made me happy. Medium rare steak filet was great. Easy to cut, although knife wasn't dangerous just effective. My husband and I went to Mastro's for Christmas service. We were able to sit in a somewhat secluded spot upstairs. We started with their tuna tartar. They're also featured on their happy hour and my favorite. My other favorite are the oyster Rockefeller. They're so cheesy and deluxe. Omar was able to ask chef to make them and also offered to bring me a small salad alongside (not included in RW or asked for) so I wasn't just sitting while my mom had her 1st app. RW came with dessert and my mom didn't order any dessert. Everything was good - only changes we would've made is instead of clarified butter being served with the lobster is that we had butter with some of the cream still in it. This was our second time dining here. The first time we visited this restaurant was on our first official date back in 2021. Then we were supposed to mark our 4 year anniversary (est 2020), here last year but couldn't so we moved it to January this year. Prior to visiting we had a conversation with another couple and they expressed some disappointment here but that didn't discourage us, we knew what we had experienced in the past so we went still. And we did not regret it. In fact they upgraded their service, from the door in to the door out, Valet, EVERYTHING was on point. We were sat where we wanted to sit, the food was PHENOMENAL! Gosh! We started with one crab cake and it was delicious, very little breading. For mains...I had the aged bone in rib eye, small lobster tail and my guest had the sea bass (blackened, medium well). What an amazing experience! My boyfriend and I were visiting Chicago and had to go to one of our favorite restaurants! Mastros steakhouse never disappoints! We sat in the bar area since they have live music every night and that really makes the experience for us! Both John and Joe the managers stopped by our table to make sure we had everything we needed and were having a good time, which obviously we were! Wen was our server and she was great! Some of my favorite appetizers that we got were the perfectly crisp and lightly battered calamari. It was server with a sweet chili type sauce which complemented the calamari. The roasted bone marrow was incredible on the toasted bread, so full of flavor in every single bite. The Wagyu beef carpaccio was also incredible! Bottom-line, this place is a great time. Yes, you may need to sell a kidney to get in, but I feel you get a lot for that hemorrhage of cash. So, if I paid full freight, might my lighter wallet have bumped this review down to a four star? Perhaps, but either way I think I'd leave with a big smile on my face. A few points: -- The 8 oz filet was cooked to perfection. Menu price was $70... -- We ordered a cocktail - the Dream Berry - and it exceeded expectations. Delicious! I thought it was a nice touch they give you a 'little extra' in the martini mixer. It felt like we got two drinks for the price of one. -- The appetizers were mixed. The lobster bisque was AMAZING and portion size generous. The tuna sashimi was 'just okay'; it had a little too much going on for my taste (admittedly, I am a tuna purist!). -- Side dishes are absolutely enormous. It looks spendy on the menu, but man, do you get a lot of bang for those considerable bucks. I was a little disappointed the Brussel Sprouts weren't more flavorful, though... -- Dessert was good -- the butter pound cake in particular was top notch. Sorbet was plentiful (3 generous scoops). Very nice restaurant, but like all restaurants of this type, it has its downsides. First, the service was great! I could not be happier with our server and the very personable attitude she had throughout dinner. The layout of the dining and bar area was nice, as it separated the two. The stairway/elevator to the bathrooms was different. Not good nor bad, just different. All that said, it is quite often when I patronize these "high end" chain restaurants, I find that the meals aren't anything to write home about. The portions are small, and overpriced for the sizes you're offered. They often taste no better than a small hole in the wall, mom n pop that I love so much! Don't get me wrong, I would throw any of it away, it's just when you're paying high end prices, you should get high end meals. Then, at no fault to Mastro's, a table of about 12, or so, nearly drunk, college boys sit right behind my daughter and I and acted like they were the only ones in the restaurant. Maybe those types of parties could get their own rooms. Again, don't blame Mastro's for that. All-in-all, would I recommend someone eat there? Yes, depending on the occasion. This place used to be the vibe, like back in the day. Now every time we check it out (and we've done more than a handful of times) it's literally a dead vibe inside. We post up at the (empty) bar and typically order something to feel the vibe out and enjoy the live music, but the bartender for the most part ignores us and is too busy making drinks for the the waitstaff. Okay, so finally we arrived and my first impression was great the place is totally old school Chicago style steak house with very attentive formally dressed staff. Actually, the staff was great including our server who went above and beyond to make our experience memorable. We even enjoyed the live music in the bar area after dinner. Sorry, I didn't take any pictures because after a nerve rattling drive; I made the mistake of leaving my telephone in my car that was dropped off with the valet service. The food actually all tasted delicious. The bone in filet was very tender with good flavor. The west coast oysters were very fresh tasting. The oreganata Chilean sea bass was also delicious with the addictive side sauce. The drinks also Everything about the experience was classy except the music playlist. I would have much better preferred some very good jazz or Frank Sinatra crooning than a top 40 pop songs. This is not a big complaint, just a recommendation. Then why the rating? Well, the next morning my stomach felt uneasy. I am the only one that had the sea bass and the only one that felt uneasy the next day, so, I believe it was the sea bass? I've been here twice in the past few months and both times have been exceptional experiences. Definitely one of the best steakhouses in the city. The bar atmosphere is fabulous and the dining room elegant and cozy. We've tried almost all of the appetizers and love the crab cakes, calamari, bone marrow and shrimp so much but everything was delicious. The Caesar salad is perfectly done. I always get seafood and love the salmon, sea bass and brazino equally. Family loves the porterhouse and tomahawk as well as the filets, rack of lamb and pork chops. Mastro's is always a great experience. On my latest visit, our party enjoyed drinks at the bar before being seated at a table in the bar area for dinner. Everything was fantastic, and I must give mad props to the bartender whose French martinis were out of this world. Service was excellent at every touch point. For appetizers we enjoyed the crab cake (very good) and the wagyu meatballs with burrata cheese (excellent). There was a filet for two special that my husband and I shared, and it was excellent, although I think it was prepared more medium rare than the medium we requested. We also enjoyed sautéed spinach, garlic mashed potatoes, and mac and cheese as sides, which were all great and were washed down with a lovely Pinot Noir. Sadly, we were too full for dessert. I want to start off by saying that this place is beautiful, the service is amazing, and it's definitely where you would take someone you want to impress. My cousin and I heard rave reviews about their Butter Cake so that's the main thing we went for but got a couple other things as well. We started off with the bread service and our waiter asked us if we wanted truffle butter, my cousin obliged. He didn't, however, tell us it was $15 which is something you should disclose before your customer finds out when they get the bill. The calamari was probably the best thing I ate. I could've personally used a little more seasoning but the sauce the drizzle on top helped. My cousin got the sauteed shrimp, as she had heard good things, and it was just 4 pieces of shrimp with a lot of bread. She said the shrimp itself was flavorless and the sauce didn't really help. I then got the chopped iceberg wedge, minus egg, and I don't know how a restaurant that charges so much can't even make a good salad but that was are signal that we didn't need entrees. Finally, we got to the long awaited butter cake. Save your time and money, it's better at California Pizza Kitchen if you're looking for a really good one. Decided to give Mastro's another try and I'm glad I did. Last night's experience was a complete 180 from my last one. To start the service was spectacular! From the hostess, to our waiter, and all employees we interacted with. We felt welcomed and taken care of from start to finish. For a starter we went with the Calamari that had a light sauce in it that gave it a tiny kick. It was flavorful and perfectly fried. For dinner I went with my favorite, a Ribeye. It was perfectly cooked and so juicy. My boyfriend ordered the sea bass and said it was one of the best he's ever had. He got it Cajun Blackened and enjoyed every last bite. For our side we shared the twice baked potato. A generous portion with a delightful bacon taste. To end the night we shared their signature warm butter cake. This was mouth watering! From the moist cake, to the vanilla ice cream, to the whipped cream, and the pieces of fresh fruit...it was a perfect ending. My thoughts about this restaurant started off very rocky. We came on a Saturday night we had a reservations at 8:30. We arrived at the restaurant 15 minutes early the valet service for this restaurant were very rude and would not park our car. They would look at us and walk away. One of my friends had to get out the car and flag valet person down. We were told misleading instructions that caused us to drive around the block several times. It took a total of 30 minutes for them to finally park our car. Another one of my friends went inside the restaurant to make sure we didn't lose our reservation and she was very rude to her because she didn't believe that we couldn't get the valet people to park our car. When we finally made it into the restaurant we were informed that our table was upstairs, and asked if we wanted to take the elevator or the stairs, one of my friends have a bad knee so we decided to take the elevator with her the hostess had an attitude when we said we will take the elevator. we were seated at our table with no menu so we just sat there for several minutes staring at each other wondering what to do next. The restaurant was dimly lit, and there was supposed to be a dress code, but it did not look like anybody was really following it. Our waitress came up to our table and she made up for the frustrating experience we just had. She was so nice, attended to our needs and answered our questions about the menu. It was a restaurant week so there was a separate menu with a deal of great options. The lobster mac & cheese was my favorite and the Butter Cake was a great dessert to end the night with. Went to Mastros for Restaurant Week 2024. I visited last year for this fun Choose Chicago event and it was fantastic. A lot less so this year. And for just under $115 for one person, it should have been SO much better! (And no alcohol..I drank water.) Last year, mid-week dinner with a larger group, and everything went fabulously. Yesterday's visit, hardly anyone there (and one guy was in his hockey jersey... and I'm judging, it looked classless. Where was the dress code??). So, regardless of the lack of dress code, MY meal was a bit disappointing, IMHO. Pretty much same menu as last year. $59 starter/main/dessert...no veggies. We were greeted by the hostess who sat us. Blake was our waiter. We joked a lot and he was super nice. I explained my tree nut and sesame seed/oil allergy. I left off the bean allergy (which includes soy) because I was not planning on anything that could have been a issue. I ordered my appetizer/starter: Tuna Sashimi. Blake brought it to me and I asked if that was soy sauce on the tuna with jalapeño. Blake, the waiter, specifically said (and my tablemate heard it) said "no." He said sesame oil was removed and that was some sauce used in its place. I again asked "soy sauce?" He assured me no. So, I took a bite and sure as shootin' it was straight soy sauce. My allergy is not deadly but I have milder affects so I avoid it, but especially when its just plain soy sauce poured all over thin tuna pieces. Blake went to the back and returned to me confirming what I knew...it was soy sauce. They replaced it with French Onion Soup. Good, but salty. A bit too. The filet... how can you get this so wrong???? Jeepers. Its a STEAKHOUSE. I was specific. I wanted medium, Blake said so a little pink and I said error to the side of medium-well, and I said to Blake how much I detest the bloody steaks. I also ordered the lobster mashed potatoes for half the price of the normal order, so $20. Potatoes.... the portion was half the size or less of the normal serving, and watery/thin mashed potatoes. My table mate was also served some and said the potatoes were ridiculously thin! And it was like one large piece of lobster tossed in. I did not take photos of it. I wish I had. I actually ended up eating from the bowl because they had to take my steak (with bone marrow butter as an extra -NOT WORTH $8 FOR A PAD OF BUTTER) back. But when our steaks were brought out to us at first, I touched it with a fork. Softer under cooked steaks feels so different from medium medium-well. I said to Blake, "wait." I cut it opened and he said something about they need to cook it a bit more. It was RARE. Great if you love it like that, but disgusting to those of us who prefer it more well-done. Blake took the steak away swiftly, probably to "kill the cow" this time. Clearly he knew they screwed that one up badly. He returned with my same steak cooked further and another pad of (tiny) butter. This time it was perfectly cooked. The manager did come by asking if I had an allergy issue. I explained I was fine, but I should never had taken a bite of it to start as I asked if that was soy sauce and Blake confidently said no. Trust but verify... I did, and Blake trusted his own gut, but never verified. Not good practice. What angered me was when Blake said I never told him I had a soy allergy. I told him because its not deadly, but I asked what was on there and he told me NOT soy sauce. THAT was my point. I asked. I should not have had to bite into it. I get sushi a few times a month from The Evie and skip soy sauce and soy-soaked fish. They get it right every time. The dessert was the warm cake with ice cream. It was good but I only ate half. I did photo that. Really an excellent dessert. Overall, it was a 5 out of 10 cheers from me. I won't return anytime soon. For the price I paid... I didn't feel it was worth it. The pad of bone marrow butter really was bad for $8. Oh well. Maybe I'll return for RW next year. read more

What a delight! Best service I've ever had in my entire life! All the dishes we had were super good. Make sure you get the bread. Had 5x diff kinds including pretzel bread with pretzel salt. Such a wonderful night. The Best Food and the Best Service.The Waiter and assistants were beyond AMAZING!!!! I'm not used to that kind of attentiveness to detail and delight. read more

I booked the dining room a day in advance. My special friend and I were celebrating. This place is a like a different dimension, in a bad way. People all over the place. Can tell everyone was frustrated, like lots of people left or something. We got sat in the loud music bar with hi-top tables, I was not happy. They sold me on the stone crab. Was not prepared right for us to eat and we both were flinging crab, forks and cut myself 3 times. For just under $200 for 2 claws which had one bite of meat it's definitely not worth it. The bacon steak appetizer is pointless and not special. Big whoop. Cocktails suck and boring.. The steaks were not cooked to perfection. 2 stars because the lobster mashed potatoes were good. I know my steakhouses, this place needs help. Sadly it ruined our vibes for the evening as well. Thanks for nothing read more
