Massaman

Visited Mao Mao while on a recent trip to Brooklyn to visit some friends. Mao Mao has such a unique vibe that I think exists only in Brooklyn. In an old school converted movie theater, this bar/restaurant utilizes old movie seats and continues to play stuff on the big screen while you eat. The ambiance is just so unique, it alone is worth a visit. Their food options are really good focusing on Southeast Asian cuisine. There are plenty of options to try including the massaman curry which I thought was delicious. We also ordered several appetizers to share which I highly recommend. The portion sizes are decent but coming from the Midwest, the prices in Brooklyn are always steep! This place was no exception, but was well within normal range for Brooklyn. The servers were all very kind and offered us helpful recommendations for what to order in terms of both food and drinks.

Quirky restaurant in Brooklyn made up like a movie theater with a big screen playing Asian movies on the main wall and theater seats at the tables. The food and the service were good. We ordered several dishes like the noodles and curry as well as appetizers like the fried chilis. Kudos for having unique dishes. Everything we ordered was good. The place was a little dark which I get being a movie theater but it made seeing what you're eating a little hard. Cool place to go with a few friends.

Second time coming back here purely for the vibes and convenience. Confirming the seating is as uncomfortable as all the other reviews mention unfortunately. I recall leaving my first visit a little disappointed with the food's taste, and this time was no different. Wish these palettes showed up with the bright and bold Thai notes I love. I did ask for additional spice to plus up my dishes--they didn't have chili oil but I settled for green chilis and red chili flakes. Super fun interior but wish the food matched it.

Overall rating: 4.8 Price: $24 pp w/ tax & tip (total of 2x) I saw this place pop up on my TikTok and have been wanting to try it for awhile.Admittedly I thought they had like movie nights but realized it's just old Thai movies. It's a super cute spot, but wow the seats are so uncomfortable. They serve on paper plates which is fun. I really like that the menu is easy to understand. And when you don't drink, it's actually pretty affordable. Items my friend & I ordered: - Curry Puff chicken: 5/5 very good, def recommend - Sai Krok Isaan: 4/5 not sure what I was expecting but nothing special - Khao Kaprow Moo: 6/5 so simple, yet so good. A tad spicy, but not too much. There were a few large parties here & I don't know how they do it. I could only come here on a date or with a friend. The seats are not comfortable, but that shouldn't stop you from grabbing a snack.

Shrimp tempura

Decor is absolutely amazing. Very uniquely decorated, small inside with unique seats with low tables. Definitely a more casual spot though. Food menu was small but unique dishes. I had a pork dish over rice. Sauce was not my favorite but still good, paired with cucumbers. Small serving of pork. But would definitely recommend the shrimp tempura. Good friendly and fast service. The best thing about this place is definitely the ambience. Suggest making a reservation.

Broadway is one of the few truly interesting streets left in Brooklyn. I never fail to find surprises when I get off at a new station along the J-Z lines, it has brought me such finds as Masquerade, Santa Panza, and Ornithology. Add to that mix the vintage kitschy (perhaps gaudy) Thai restaurant-cum-club-cum-cinema you didn't know you needed in your life. I'm no expert on vintage Thai cinema, but the soundtrack appears to be the Thai equivalent of Nazia Hassan and 80s Lata Mangeshkar. The vegetarian options are not that plentiful. And you come here more for the vibes than the food. But I did enjoy the snacking peanuts, and the chive dumplings - for pak mor, one of my favorite sweet-savory Thai snacks, the version at Chiangmai Diner is more delicate.

Mao Mao has a really cool atmosphere. You walk through the door and down the stairs to be seated. The seating is eclectic and it is hit or miss if you get a comfortable seat or not. One time we were sat in the theater seats and those were comfortable but not within good reach distance to table for eating. The second time we were sat in uncomfortable metal chairs. The food isn't anything special to me but I think that might just be my personal preference. It is all cooked well and authentic - but I am not a seafood lover and most of their food tastes like it is cooked in fish oil or fat. The stars are mostly for atmosphere and the staff is super friendly and attentive. I don't plan to go back.

Mao Mao is a fun bar in Brooklyn that transports you to Thailand! From the decor to the smell, it felt authentic. I came here with a party of 6 and we squeezed into one of the corner tables downstairs. I loved the giant projector that played various vintage videos of Thailand and the music was on point. We only ordered drinks since we already had dinner down the street. We got the Ma Kratheup Long to share, which had about 10-12 shots worth of alcohol in the glass flask. The taste of that was a lot better than the smell! I also ordered myself a cocktail with soju, but can't remember the name of it. It was pretty good and I had a good buzz by the night we left. All in all, a fun bar to check out!

Such a COOL restaurant. It prides itself in its authentic thai food and eclectic aesthetic. All the tables are mismatched retro chairs, which is really what the place is about. Theres an array of lights all over the walls and a movie that runs- adding to the vibe. The food itself had big portions for a reasonable price with super fun unique drinks (i.e., the soju coffee one was delicious!) The service was quick and casual. Don't come here looking for the fanciest dining experience, but it is definitely an eccentric one!

The food is delicious! I love all the fun medicinal shots. The names are all iconic. I also like the cinema atmosphere and overall theme of the spot! My one feedback is - if you are charging so much for a drink - I'd love it in a glass cup and with delicious garnish. Cheers!

I ordered the green curry with beef from the lunch menu. The curry is very watery but tasted really delicious. The beef with boiled texture and lots of peppers were in the sauce. It came with white rice and I loved it. The crispy tofu add on was good if you like tofu! The sweet peanut sauce went perfectly with the fluffy tofu. The beef pad see eww was one of the best I've ever had. From the texture of the noodles, to the sauce, to the veggies and beef. It's a must have here! Tom yum soup came in a huge tower and was perfect to share. We ever had some leftovers. Good amount of shrimp and veggies inside. Quick and attentive service! And the worker's little son helped her bring the check for fun. It was adorable

Lunch in Brooklyn during in-between meetings of my professional duties of a Wednesday afternoon…read moresummons Thai cuisine. Pad Kee Mao (aka Drunken Noodles), chicken $15.00 Stir-fried flat rice noodle, bamboo shoots, garlic, basil, fresh chili, onion, carrot, string bean, bell pepper, long hot chili The flat rice noodle quantity was sufficient, but minimal and there were too much onion, insufficient string bean, two paucity pieces of carrot. I dislike bamboo shoot which is not a standard ingredient for this particular entrée. I think the bamboo shoot tainted this entrée. I am a traditionalist conservative which bean sprouts is a good substitute variation for bamboo shoot vegetable including string bean. This entrée is my favorite default and as a caveat, if any Thai restaurant or cafe do not offer on their menu I refuse entry to patronize. This entrée enticed my interest and embedded the lunch meal menu for the reasonable price. I personally despise and do not consume spicy hot foods, but occasionally consume mild or very mild in the smallest measurement of the Scoville scale which I specifically requested, but received medium hot spicy. The waitress forewarned me the intense heat level on the Scoville scale as Thai cultural spicy with two or more bird's eye chilies for a high level of spiciness. The spiciness of chili peppers were, in my opinion, medium spicy. Despite the intense medium heat spiciness, the stir-fried noodles lacked flavor with, tender chicken, minimal vegetables, and Thai basil in a bland taste. I wish I chosen shrimp as the protein. Pad Kee Mao sustained my hunger pangs and ate my fill. When eating Thai intense heat spicy foods, I visualize to think of the TV segment "Niall Horan & James Corden Take On Hot Wings" on "The Late Late Show with James Corden" in March, 2020. High heat spicy foods! Thai ice tea, large $3.00 This was a delight and neutralized the heat spiciness because it contains milk. It was served chilled in a large highball glass. Samyan is a Thai cafe located in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, NYC and accessible via MTA NYC Transit C local train at Clinton-Washington subway station. This cafe is a independently owned and operated, thankfully. The waitress did check-in with me during my meal for attentive customer service. The atmospheric conditions were a simple small dine-in cafe. There were many paintings, portraits hanging on their walls of white subway tiles. Gold metallic metal chopsticks and fork are provided. If utensils are gold then the interior cafe should contain these "gaudy" feature extensive gold elements, including gilded moldings and furniture. Peony rose are very simply and made pretty table centerpiece decorations. Takeout menu and business cards are available for grabs. I did received my sales receipt. At the bottom of the sales receipt there is a suggested gratuity in intervals of 18%, 20% and 22% where customers do not have to perform math calculation. I paid $23.00 in cash as the waitress' informative knowledge of the ingredients and preparation of the heat level on the Scoville scale.

Love the masala and green. Like them so tried with different types of proteins. My only draw back to this place or gets too rowdy at times. Also the place is too small . Call it suffering for beauty, in a culinary wrapper. Ugly Baby took this S&M theater to its logical conclusion in all regards: tuck it in an inaccessible corner of South Brooklyn; use tiny chairs and brusquely inform diners they have an hour start to finish at their table. The more inconvenient it was, the better. I held my applause after my single visit to Ugly Baby, which closed amidst wails and lamentation last year from people who liked rough treatment. But something drew me back to this reincarnation, started by the same people. Maybe, I thought, they'd found a way to bring us that magnetic authenticity, and hold the ball gags and chain flails? The answer is no. I should have known from the name alone: another mysterious two-word phrase (both of whose words again end in -y) that sounds like it could be an overly literal translation of some ineffable Thai concept. I should have known when it opened in the same godforsaken corner of ... what is that? Gowanus? I should have known from the protracted negotiations for a suitable table that followed when my husband, mom and I arrived punctually for our 5:30 reservation and were primly informed we'd be squeezing onto a two top, then were refused an obviously empty three-top ("it's reserved"....oh you mean by a party of three with a reservation like us?), and then grudgingly seated at a four-top, half of which was literally in the kitchen. I should have known after being apprised that "you have one hour at the table." I should have known when there were no appetizers or desserts, and only two vegetarian entrees. This is the same thing as before. We're so back, baby. The mushroom curry, with its single fire emoj, was nowhere near the spiciest thing on the menu, but gosh was it still spicy. How do they make food with such complex flavors that's still hot enough to have emanated from the bowels of hell? It has to be one of the best curries I've had. It's a talent, special even, but it could easily coexist without Hungry Thirsty's other downsides. But I think all those inconveniences and discomforts are the point. They serve to reinforce the specialness of the special parts, counterintuitively increasing your mental investment in internally extolling Hungry Thirsty's virtues. They are to each element what spice is to food: it hurts, and you're proud that it hurts. It all adds up to the second coming of Ugly Baby, and why wouldn't it? Enough people liked being slapped around; maybe they felt like they deserved it. You know if that's you or not.

I enjoyed the food and the event so much that I've returned and told others to go as well. What I like the most is that Chiangmai's expansive menu showcases aspects of Thai cuisine that you're probably not getting at your neighborhood spot. Many items are Northern Thai style dishes. I'd never had Khao Soi before coming here and I was blown away. The chiangmai sausage is also delicious. The roasted duck curry boasts deep flavor while also maintaining the crispiest duck skin. For appetizers, we started with the crispy salmon belly bites and the moo ping. Frying salmon is risky, but the fattiness of the belly keeps it from drying out. The moo ping is nicely grilled and served with a sweet sauce. You just can't go wrong ordering meat on a stick. As an entree, I tried the Gaeng Awm Nur, a soup-like beef dish served with a side of sticky rice. Our server had been really nice and welcoming, so I felt ok asking how I should eat my meal. She advised that I make a ball of some sticky rice with my hand, mash it a bit, and then dip it into the soup. Thai food achievement unlocked! Now I know what to do next time I'm served sticky rice. There's so much on the menu it can be hard to choose. This is encouragement to go with someone else who enjoys food so you can choose things to share! You won't be disappointed and in fact may find that your regular Thai spots could step up their game in comparison.
