We got take out from here. It was ready for pick up on time. The thai iced tea was as expected. The portion size was on the larger side. I got the shrimp pad Thai. The noodles were wider than I am used to. The taste was ok. The shrimps were over cooked. The beef pad ki Mao was better but odd that it was served with baby carrots. I don't think I've ever seen that before in a Thai dish. Shredded carrots yes... but a full on baby carrot that you buy to snack on uncooked in those prepackaged bags. My coworkers and I visit "Thai Cafe" pretty frequently for lunch. The staff is pretty friendly, the menu is affordable, and the food is pretty spot-on, it's a win all around. My vegetarian pal is a huge friend of their mock duck. I've never tried it, but it looks delicious whenever she orders it. The fried tofu is also pretty delicious. Don't pass on the veggie dumplings. It was just sooooooo good! I have no idea why there are some bad reviews for this place. It is as fantastic as I remember it to be when it just opened and I lived in the neighborhood about 25 years ago and it was just a tiny sliver of a steamy storefront with a long narrow counter, a line out the door, and the best Thai food I had ever tasted. It hasn't changed at all - big plates with fresh veggies and perfect combo of fresh and fragrant flavors. I had told so many people about this place over the decades, never dreaming it could still be there, and just as fantastic tasting. It is still my all time favorite Thai food which I have sampled generously across the country. We even got some take-out after we finished eating and will continue to make it a point to come back when I'm in Brooklyn again, or craving their food again! I had the Pad Thai, my boyfriend had the garlic chicken, and if it wasn't for some food allergies I would have had the green curry- the dish I still dream about that after two and a half decades later, that still haunts me! We headed to Thai Cafe last night for some takeout. They are cash only, but there are ATMs nearby. The prices of entrees are very reasonable; none are more than ten bucks. The two women working were extremely nice and served us water while we waited for our food to be ready, and for that we were grateful because we had just finished up a run. My boyfriend had been here before and always orders the curry, while I opted for classic Pad Thai with chicken. When we got home, I busted into the grub. The portions are reasonable, and the food was still piping hot. In my experience, a lot of Thai places either do curry or noodles really well and not both. This is one of those places. The red curry was awesome--not as hot as we would have liked, even after requesting make it as hot as you can! The Pad Thai was just so so, I've definitely had better Pad Thai at other places. Really bland & boring. We ordered take out, it came quickly & was not terribly expensive, but not good. I got the pad kee mao, which is suppose to be spicy and full of flavor. It tastes like slightly spicy cardboard. I also got the veggie version, it had one big piece of tofu & a weird array of veggies that you don't usually find in the dish. I don't understand how there can be any stars over 3 on this page. Maybe it was very different a few years ago? But I just had it today, and it was so atrociously bad food it was inedible. The meat in my pad Thai was frozen and thawed out, based on how chewy and dried out it was. The vegetables were not fresh. Some were just flat out dried out. The papaya salad had overripe, or maybe nearly spoiled papayas. I think they added extra spice to mask its turning. And the mussels my lady friend ordered were bland and not fresh either. I ordered a large plate of plain steamed broccoli -- no sauce, no meat-- and with tax they charged me $15.19 (!!!? A single side order of broccoli is listed at $6.00 on their menu. If I had ordered two side orders it would only have been $12, plus tax. Chicken and broccoli is listed on their menu at $13.95 (plus tax)- a very reasonable price for chicken and broccoli. But why they would charge more for plain broccoli than for a dish with that includes chicken is a mystery. I called to speak with someone at Thai Cafe about this, and she justified her pricing. Solid, standard Thai cuisine - with one exception! The Pad See Ew is some of the most flavorful I've had! Doesn't mean it's necessarily the highest quality, but there is something to be said about the perfect amalgamation of sodium and richness. I'm all about it, whether it's beef, shrimp, or chicken. Even the dessert is surprisingly tasty -- fried bananas which is essentially bananas wrapped in spring roll skin. Sooo good!! I'm surprised by all the rancor people feel for Thai Cafe. Yes, the place is drafty in winter; I suspect they do most of their business via take-out, although I live too far to order from them. Yes, the art is often terrible; at least they HAVE art. And yes, you sometimes have to flag down the waitresses, who don't speak great English (but seriously, what do you expect?) but are always really nice. But Thai Cafe's food is great. Its renditions of Thai restaurant standards are routinely very fresh and simple; they're not oily, sugary or overly umami-laden like the dishes are at many places. The incredible spicy noodles with seafood (basically pad kee mao) are topped with a generous scatterings of many kinds of still-firm veggies (eggplant, carrot, zucchini, peppers, tomatoes, cabbage...), cilantro, sprouts and an unusual sauce. The basil dishes are heavy on the basil, and the curries are finely flavored. The mussels are actually steamed well -- and awfully cheap, considering. (The appetizer portion is really generous.) Nothing seems like it's been artificially thickened, and no dish skimps on protein. Some of the appetizers leave something to be desired; the salads and spring rolls need better lettuce than iceberg, and the shrimp appetizer is laughably small (I guess that's why it's cheap). The accompanying sauces are better than average, though. Still, this place's food is consistently way better than that at any of the places I've been to in Williamsburg and Greenpoint (Cheers, Lily Thai, all of the places along Manhattan and Bedford Avenues). After reviewing the local thai restaurants in the area on here, we decided to give this place a shot, mainly because it was the closest. First, the waitress completely forgot about us. I mean, there were only a couple other tables occupied but come on! I actually think she may have even left for a period of time. When our orders finally came, things did not get any better. My food was well below mediocre. There was absolutely no flavor, so much so that I was amazed that they would even serve it. My boyfriend's food actually had a lot of flavor but in combination with the stretchy miscellaneous chunks of beef that had tons of huge mutated fat bubbles attached to them it was hard to eat. We even tried to take pictures of the alien meat but all of the sudden the waitress decided to tend to us and snatched it up. It's safe to say, we will NOT be going back there.
