This place is awesome! My bf and I stumbled upon it by accident last Sunday night, and wow, am I glad we did! We were in the neighborhood looking for a bite and a drink before the Les Savy Fav show at The Market Hotel and the place we'd planned on had closed. Maomao is like its own tiny universe. You walk in thinking you're in a scooter garage and then a very friendly host/hostess dances and sings while escorting you downstairs into what looks like an outdoor drive-in theater. The space is decorated with vintage Thai posters of actresses/beauty Queens, twinkle lights, tiki torches, and what seems like whatever else they've collected from bins on the street over the years, and a giant screen playing kitschy vintage Thai movies. We ordered wine and a couple of the small plates to share. Lukchin Ping (Beef) (meatballs with a spicy tamarind sauce) were probably our favorite. Kung Sam Rod (fried shrimp with sweet/sour sauce) were awesome, too. We were in a little bit of a hurry to get to the show, but agreed we would totally come back to try more dishes and enjoy the fun atmosphere. read more

We came early at about 5 before they had too much going on, and by the time we left they were jumping. The ambiance here is just unbeatable. They had a DJ, nice lighting, and the famous movie screen. The food was also delicious, we got the pork sausage skewers and the wonton soup. Overall we spent about $120 here for small plates and maybe 5 drinks. A couple points of issue though, a can of beer was $15 and after we'd had two drinks they started taking things away before we were done. They clearly wanted us gone to get the table back in circulation, but I'm confused about why because we were getting plenty of food and drinks and we started getting the brush off about 45 minutes in to our evening. I've never spent so much money somewhere only to be rushed out! read more

Mao Mao - Movie screen! - Thai Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

Probably the most unfortunate and uncomfortable dining experiences I've had in a long time. I really wanted to love this place because the space has so much potential and is actually pretty cool. It has two levels and has all kinds of interesting lighting, big tv projector etc. The various seating here just makes you feel like you're being made fun of LOL like the owners are playing a cruel joke that you're not in on. They sat us down at a table that was very close to the floor and the seats were so high in comparison. Basically your knees hit the table, super uncomfortable to the point we were going to leave but we decided to stick it out. Maybe the food would be amazing we thought and it would be worth it to sit like hunched giants with no leg room. Nope. The food was so disappointing and pretty small portions for the price as many others have said. We ordered pickled mango which was probably my favorite thing. Then tried the chicken wings and fried dumplings which were just okay. The saddest part of this meal with the massaman curry. I was truly sad. They serve this on a plastic plate with a huge scoop of white rice, 4 pieces of dry chicken and 2 pieces of potato. The "curry" was basically a little bit of sauce on the plate. Really disappointing and we left so dissatisfied that we went for a 2nd dinner after. They won't be seeing us here again, there are many many better places to spend your money. read more

I wanted to love this place so badly, but it just fell short. I'll start by saying I love the vibe! The inside is dark with red lighting, and looks like an old school movie theater in Thailand. They also have the Thai fermented alcohol in various flavors. The waiter recommended "perfect husband," so we ordered a bottle of that and took shots. As for the food, we ordered a variety of things. While all the flavor was good, the entire meal left more to be desired. Importantly, none of the dishes arrived to the table hot. The wings, pork neck/spine soup, braised pork leg, and dumplings all arrived to the table at room temperature. They were pretty busy that night and the service was slow, so we didn't even bother sending them back as we had already waited quite a while. The yum talay (spicy seafood salad) arrived at the table hot which was odd Bc this salad was supposed to be room temperature, lol. Hot food could've made the experience exponentially better. At the end of the meal, the waiter apologized and said they had been unusually busy that night. I would give this place another try if they work out their service kinks. read more

Service was good and attentive. The atmosphere was a throwback vibe with old Thai films playing via projector and vintage memorabilia. Table perhaps a little too short to eat comfortably but it's about the ambiance. Wonton soup was flavorful, loaded with book choy and a generous amount of dumplings. Chicken was Amazing. The dumplings app was the same wonton served in the wonton soup. Overall a great place to eat at. read more

I walked by this place with my co workers a few times during are lunch break and we finally all agreed to go in and try out this place for once. It's very dimly lit with a very vintage feel. If you walk past the restaurant you would not believe it's actually food served there. As you come in you see vintage piece items and a giant movie screen as well as recycled wood as table tops and movie theatre and old assembly room chair as the choice of seating which wasn't that comfortable. My friends ordered The curry chicken with jasmine rice and a vegetable soup. The food look pretty decentralized and was very flavorful but the portion sizes weren't t enough for the price. Staff was pretty helpful with helping them decide what to eat which I appreciated. This place is moderately priced. I'd your into vintage and want to really experience THAILAND CHECK this place out. The bathrooms are amazing. read more

Ambiance: impeccable. You feel like you're at a Thai outdoor theater. It feels other worldly. Cons: if you're someone who's big or tall seating might be uncomfortable because a lot of the seating is in old movie theater seats. And it can get crowded and a little loud. Food: small plates were good but were a little pricey for what they were, large plates on the other hand were INCREDIBLE. Really delicious and giant portions so if you're hungry please go for the large plates. Drinks: they have a very large drinks menu with interesting Thai drinks too! I tried the medicinal Thai spirit which was definitely STRONG and also the plum wine which was so sweet and delicious. Overall: a really cool and fun place if you have ever wanted to experience thai street food style eats or drinks in Brooklyn! read more

Super cool vibes, that transports you to an evening in Bangkok - in a run down theater type space. It's dark, moody and the seating is literally movie theater style (red scratchy material) seats. I would suggest to come for drinks and some apps - enjoy your time and go for dinner elsewhere. There just isn't enough room (physical table space) to really enjoy your meal. But it's certainly a cool experience - if your in the neighborhood, go! read more

This place is truly awesome and authentic. It's the vibe for me, we loved it. The food was super good. The appetizers were really really small but they were still delish. And the price for a 3.5 ounce bottle of soju is 16.99 which is a lot for something so tiny so your going to end up buying 3 or 4 which I'm sure is the point... anyways I digress.. the service was really good as well. I loved the movie projector on the wall and all the fun decor, they had a dj too which was nice, I wish he would of played some Thai music instead so we could of had the full experience but it's ok. We spent 185$ for 2 people. Like I said those bottles were small. read more

This is tough. I thought the food was outstanding and I would normally rate this place five stars... if only the meal had taken place under normal restaurant conditions that is. The setting of the restaurant was just too much to bear. The seats are mostly cramped seats with very little leg room (think the worst airplane seating you have ever experienced, just like that), as the restaurant is trying to replicate a movie theater experience. That would be good if there was something interesting being shown on the big projector in the center, but we saw an unsubtitled, no sound, blurry thai film. Food was also served on paper plates with plastic utensils; which would be fine except for dishes which require cutting or the soup which was hard to drink with the small plastic spoon. Just overall unpleasant experience! On the other hand, the flavors presented here were amazing! Definitely lives up to its predecessor Lamoon from Elmhurst. My favorites were the Laab Talay and pork rib soup. read more

This place is such a vibe! Once you walk in, you're immediately taken aback by the atmosphere; it transports you to another world. It feels like you're dining in an old movie theater in Thailand. They have lots of unique drink options. The Gai Saam Yang ($12) was a great pairing with some drinks; it's an assortment of nuts, dried shrimp/sausage, etc. We also had the shrimp tempura, Goong Sam Rot ($12) and minced pork rice, Khao Krapow Moo Sub ($16). Everything was delicious and service was quick. We stopped by on a Friday night during peak dinner hours without a reservation and had no problem getting a table. read more

A very unique spot. Coming here feels like stepping into a different version of reality for a bit. It's moody, there are movies playing silently while the Beatles play out loud, and the decor is part movie theater, part street market. We didn't realize 2 hours had passed. The food felt simple yet authentic, and I appreciated that this wasn't the same Thai food you can get at the many other Thai spots around. We got the veggie curry puffs, laab talay, and khao mun gai, which were all great! I'd never had medicinal libations, which we split between the 2 of us and had 4-5 shots each. They went down smooth! The only things that can be hit or miss are 1) the seating, we were seated next to each other facing the projector, 2) it took time for the food to cook so this prob isn't the best spot if you're in a rush, 3) they can invest in tableware besides paper plates read more

Great food and ambiance! The beef larb was so spicy I went through three waves of crying and sweating through all my pores - but I kept going back for more. The dishes are reasonably priced, served on styrofoam places reminiscent of quick snacks. In the background you can find old Thai boxing on a projector screen. Maomao is off the beaten path (if you're not in Bushwick) but you won't regret the old school Thai vibes and hip crowd. read more

Mao Mao - Indoor - Thai Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

I'm obsessed with Maomao, and so happy that it's within walking distance of my apartment! I've been a couple times since they opened earlier this year, and have never been disappointed. There are so many salty, sweet, spicy, and sour flavors in all of their dishes that I've yet to taste anywhere else. I definitely recommend going with a group and sharing a bunch of plates. Their Thai drinking snacks are so good with a beer (or their Thai medicinal drinks) - I order the pickled mango with chili sugar every time. The ma nao dishes are super spicy but really delicious. If you're looking for something less spicy, their khao mun gai and bamee moo dang are both excellent. The space itself is also really cool - it feels like you are in a movie theater, and there are so many cool decorations. Thai movies are always playing, and there are actual theater seats to sit in. Very unique Thai bar in Brooklyn New York. I saw lots of people posting about this place for a while and today I'm glad I come. I love the decoration of this place so much, very artistic, classic, local, bring back to 60-70s in Thailand. The bar has very interesting drinks and names. Food is also good, many small plates and snacks. I have luk chin ping: beef ball, tod mun pla: fried fish cake, sai krok isaan: Thsi north east style sausage (I like this dish the most) and I also have Two som tum plara and som tum Thai salad. Food come fast and service is very good. The waiter is so friendly and comes to check if my friends and I want something else. It is so nice to bring friends and hanging out here. read more

The 3 stars is only for the food . I actually had a good time here & the food was good but what ruined the experience was the waiter strongly suggesting I give him a bigger tip. Read: He told me that I need to give him a bigger tip because anyone who comes there to dine do not give a tip less than 18% and if I couldn't do that calling and picking up my food was an option . Outside of that we got the steamed and fried dumplings, chicken wings, the pork and noodle meal and the Hard D--k drink . they were playing a movie but the screen was grainy, no subtitles ( it was an Asian movie ) and if you sit on the lower level prepare to be looking up at the screen. Am more upset by the waiter's behavior . read more

Mao Mao - Thai Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

This is an EXPERIENCE!!! It's like stepping directly into another world, not Brooklyn but Thailand - a complete vibe. Perfect for an intimate date night or drinks with friends. The space is dimply lit with red lighting as you enter, you take stairs down to the main seating area passing a huge screen playing vintage Thai movies, absolutely chic! I truly enjoyed my time here, a friend saw an ad on Instagram and she couldn't believe it was real. We decided to check it out and the menu did not disappoint. I love Thai food but I've only had true authentic Thai in Queens so it was a delight to taste the sensual flavoring of all the dishes. We decided to try a ton from the menu. We started off with drinking snacks which include tasty peanuts Tuo tod sa moon pra these flavorful nuts are cooked with lemon grass, lime leaves and salt - I could not stop eating them. We also tried taro krab, imagine chips paired with a spicy sriracha and fish sauce this was just as equally delicious. Plus the chive dumplings! And of course, you have to start this meal with a delicious beer from Thailand, Leo may be my new beer. It's flavorful and you won't have that full beer feeling in your stomach if you know what I mean lol. For our mains we shared the khao moo dang, which is a roast pork dish served over rice, incredible! Just incredible. Added an authentic Papaya salad, this is important! Get the authentic version and taste the difference. There's less sweetness and it just has a delicate taste, more vinegary which was great. Since we were going big, we added khao kha moo, it's a slow roasted pork leg, like yes please! The meat fell off the bone!! I'n addition to the handmade sausage....craziness! I also must mention you have to try Ya Dong, it's a Thai traditional medical cocktail which is largely infused with herbs and alcohol. We decided to try several including the Perfect Husband, the Hard D_ck and the Moaning Mistress! Such a cool concept, I love herb infused anything so each was like a little treat but my fav was the definitely the Moaning Mistress! Service was great, our waitress was knowledgeable and had great suggestions. She also encouraged us to try things out of the box which I really appreciated. My friend ended up leaving her shopping bag and she reached out to coordinate a pickup. Like how sweet!! Be daring here, try something new! read more

Loved Mao Mao! It's a vibe for sure. A group of 4 of us dined in at Mao Mao a few weekends ago and upon arriving around 7:30 we were able to be immediately seated. Before we ordered drinks we noticed a table on the lower level had opened up and they let us move there which was great because the seats were a bit more spacious in that section. The food is street food style and if you're going with a group I highly recommend just ordering for the table and sharing it all. I especially loved the chicken wings and the table had to order a second plate of dumplings. Add some of the larger dishes with rice and papaya salad and you've got a great meal. We all enjoyed one of the specialty cocktails and the group favorite was the spicy mango one. Service was friendly and quick and collaborative as different folks were helping to run food and drinks and clear our table. There was a DJ which was a bit louder than we preferred but that's bc we were all excited to catch up and chat with one another. Great spot and worth the trip to bushwick. read more

Mao Mao is a place to go if you want a really unique ambiance to hang out in. Positives: The food was pretty great, a few unique options that I don't see on mainstream Thai menus. Everything was tasty. The decor is very cool and old Thai movies play on a big screen. Negatives: The seating, made up of movie theater seats and stools, is unique but not the most comfortable. The music got too loud after 8:30pm on a Thursday. The food is all served on paper plates and plastic cups. Worth trying once and seeing if it speaks to your soul. (not sure it spoke to mine.) On the recommendation of a friend who shall remain nameless, :cough: Louis, my friends and I, minus ironically Louis, came to Mao Mao after a rather rude Uber ride. The place is sort of hidden around the corner of desolate and graffiti riddled storefronts. Word of warning: it's a super dark place like literally. It's like they haven't paid their light bill and are relying on dim candlelight. It's a lot like in the movies where the main character visits an opium den. It's the Thai restaurant version of a movie opium den. The interior was what I can only describe as eclectic eccentricity. The seats were a mix of bar stools, darkly painted children's chairs, and plush movie seats. The tables are so low, there is basically no space between it and the floor. Our group was originally 10 but only 5 came. Perhaps those 5 knew the real deal about Mao Mao. We kind of had 2 servers, a male and female, both faux friendly and full of polite and insulting condensation. Props to authenticity because the menu was in Thai, the descriptions were in English, and there were no pictures. Actually, the descriptions and no pictures were all rendered moot because there was NO LIGHT to read it properly! To the food, we all had various plates of white rice and pork. I had minced pork with basil sauce and rice. I asked them to make it spicy, they didn't. Also, I barely tasted any of the sauce. Then again, I probably couldn't see it because, you know, no light! The plate was small for a "large" plate and my other friend, who only got a "small" plate, was very surprised when she got hers on a plate usually reserved to be placed on the bottom of teacups. It cost $11. Mine cost $15. Perhaps this a Thai thing or maybe they're afraid of a violent uprising because of the miniscule amount of food and their abhorrent behavior but what the hell is up with the plastic plates and forks with no knives? Like, dudes, I'm in a damn restaurant not a backyard barbecue! Wait, let me take it back, in every backyard barbecue I've been to, I was given a plastic fork AND a KNIFE. It wasn't worth it. My food was very lackluster. As of right now, about an hour and a half later, I'm hungry. I wish I gotten pizza. To make matters worse, they added gratuity for our group of 5. According to the cold and condescending waitress, they do that with everyone including solo diners. Really? For one person? To get charged 20% gratuity? And have the audacity to ask for an additional tip? Sorry, I'm not about that life and neither are my friends. Overall, I think this place gets cred for being authentic Thai and gets to treat its patrons however the hell it wants. Mao Mao isn't worth the trip, isn't worth the money, and isn't worth the time. read more

Takeaway- stop by for drinks in a cool, or rather interesting, ambiance but skip the food. I enjoyed both the lychee cocktail and spicy mango cocktail. We tried 3 dishes but only enjoyed the chicken wings. The pork in chef's special spicy sauce was spicy like the title, but the texture was a little dry and chewy. We also paid $15 for a plate with unseasoned nuts, and diced ginger, onions, chili and lime. I assume it was meant to be mixed together like chaat or trail mix but the diced lime still had the rind on it. Definitely overpriced for the food. Warning- the difference between the male and female bathrooms is comical. read more

I absolutely love Mao Mao. It is like stepping out of Brooklyn and into another world! I have not been to Thailand myself, but my friend told me it is very authentic in the feel and ambiance as well as the food & even how they serve it like street food. Everything I have tried here is absolutely delicious! I usually order a bunch of things and share with whoever I'm with. It is one of my regular and favorite spots. I would note it can be a bit noisy as it is a cinema and they play loud music, so if you are looking for an intimate spot, this may not be it. Also, the chairs are like small stools and movie seats low to the ground, which I find to be a fun design choice, but I could see why some people may not prefer this. read more

I really really want to like this place ....... atmosphere is a lot of fun, would be great as a bar, with it's dark and loud environment, but not good as a restaurant. -drinks $8-12 beer -$12-16 for sojuo- no liquor apps salad soup $9-21, entrees $16-20 -- (prices on website are wrong) food is meh if you are kind, ( cutting food cost corners, understandable, but noticeable) and paper plates and plastic forks..... wtf? now it just feels like they are rubbing your nose in it you dumb fucking hipster. seating is awkward at best- cash only- that's fine, we all hate taxes. This is not a condemnation of the business, just what they need to work on. 2/25/2022 I really want to like this place, and as other reviewers stated it is worth the trip, but only for novelty. Maybe I am being harsh because of so many blindly glowing reviews, but I wish they were better. I would love this to be my goto Thai restaurant, but I just can't..... to many issues. I was exploring Bushwick and I find this cute place. It's a really interesting set up. Love the vibes! Two starts for the vibes. However, food is mediocre and honestly I think it's expensive for the portion size for that part of town. They also don't respect your spice level request which is a big NO for me. If "authentic" Thai means being treated somewhat condescendingly and having to endure uncomfortable seating where your knees are bashed against a table and hiked up to your shoulders, then I guess I will put up with Maomao for its tasty drinking snacks served on flimsy disposable plastic dinnerware. After the third dish where the server made me repeat the Thai name instead of the English ingredient, he clarified, "I'm going to make you say the proper name for all of it just so you know." Aggravating, but fine. I had the tod mun pla/fish cakes, pik gai zapp (fried chicken wings), sai krok isaan (thai pork sausage) and a pork sparerib soup that I don't see on their online menu. The pork sparerib soup was $18, and it was a hefty portion with probably 3-4 spare ribs worth in there. I loved the sweet/sour/spicy flavor of the soup. Lots of lemongrass, calamansi, and cilantro. The meat was tender as well. The pork sausage had a great snap and was tasty. I didn't really care for the fried chicken wings which were a little soggy, and the fish cakes were okay. I wish they were thicker. Maomao is obnoxious and uncomfortable but I guess the food is worth the schtick. read more

Mao Mao - Thai Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

I woke up to find my self in a hole in the wall restaurant in Bangkok, Thailand. No wait, surprisingly it was in Brooklyn. This place has it all. Inspired by vintage cinema, the restaurant/bar has a movie theater set up with seats and all. Vintage Thai movies are playing in the background as you enjoy Thai beers, sake/soju infused cocktails, or some wine. I came here with a party of 4 and was sat at a table within 5 min (the only thing good about covid is that awesome undervalued places aren't too crowded on a Saturday night). I instantly fell in love with the aesthetics and vibe. We ordered some of the cocktails. My wife got the perfect husband (hopefully not a jab at me), while I went with a Leo (Thai) beer. Hoping they serve Chang and Singha soon! While combing through the menu i started noticing dishes I hadn't seen in a Thai restaurant (within Brooklyn) in a long time. Legit authentic dishes ranging from Kao Mahn Gai (hainanese style chicken and rice) to ba mee moo dang (roast pork style noodle soup). I was in heaven. Feeling nostalgic about my dozen visits back to my home country, this brought back wonderful memories. I ordered the chicken and rice instantly and my wife tried the seafood laab. Everything was amazing. Not sure if they just hired the chef straight from Thailand, but it was every bit what I remembered. Also the price was a steal for the area with dishes ranging from $12-$20. I will be back 100% and recommend this place to anyone in NYC or visiting. read more

It's legit fun and there is loud Thai music playing and everything is decorated in a perfectly cluttered way The only real question is why am I moving to greenpoint when my current place is 2 blocks away from here Smh Recommendations: - Get any of the laabs extra spicy and fuck your shit up - don't get any fancy wine or beer and just get a beer Leo, it rules and is better than some gose read more

Mao mao is a fun place you want to be at, that's the consensus. More divisive is whether it is a restaurant you want to eat at, that I am not confident. We were served in paper plates and forks. The menu, table/chair, and cutlery are all trying to mimic an authentic Thai street food vibe. Sadly, the food was overpriced and lousily made. For example, we ordered the Thai street snacks, which was $8 (ish??) a plate of tiny peanuts, bad quality Chinese sausages, and tiny diced eggplants and ginger. I could probably throw together a plate like that for $3. The minced pork main and the Chinese-Thai stew pork main had its ups and downs too. The pork was flavorful but tasted like cheap, fatty pork. Rice was very mushy. I've had better street food in Thailand than Mao Mao, which isn't a fair comparison because street food in Thailand has set the bar way too high. All in all, this is low quality thai street food with Manhattan prices. I would come here for drinks and the fun vibe, but definitely lower my expectation on food. read more
