Maomao is better as a bar, not a restaurant. The music is super loud (you can't talk in there) and the chairs and tables are super uncomfortable. It is also so dark inside and you'll have to use flash light to check out the menu. We asked the manager if he can turn down the music a bit (it was like at 6pm) and he said he would rather die than turning it down. The cute set up feels more like a gimmick and pretentious if it' does not make me dine comfortably. The food is good tho. read more

Every single seat in this place is no higher than 16 inches off the ground. It's like they raided a kindergarten classroom when they set up the place. I was looking forward to trying the food here, but we left immediately after the server informed us there were no seating alternatives even remotely comfortable for fully-grown adults. I don't know anyone who wants to eat curry in a dark, dirty room in the fetal position. Another commenter described the place as "Chuck E Cheese for hipsters" and that nails it. Bushwick deserves better. read more

Really good food and friendly service. I've only ordered takeout from here, but enjoyed the dishes. Chicken with rice dish, the spicy pork dish, and the chicken in curry sauce. read more

Cool vibe, it's a nice social place to hang out and get some unique cocktails with some delightfully spicy food.

This place gave me mixed energy. For one (on the positive side), the vibe is immaculate. The setting combines hole in the wall, antiques full of nostalgia, and an old movie theater setting complete with theater style seats, a projector, and even working arcade games (lost in street fighter while paying the bill!). This is sometimes a bit of a detriment though; we were originally seated in movie theater seats that were comfortable but positioned awkwardly such that sitting at them while eating would have been inconvenient. The food was quite good and the 3 stars would have been 4 if the prices were a bit better. A friend and I shared the Kao Moo Dang and Khao massamun gai curry. We both thought the Kao Moo Dang was okay but that the curry was quite good. As far as drinks go, the main thing we were encouraged to try was the Ya Dong along with a beer. Our server was incredibly helpful in giving us advice on beer pairing. I had the Hard D*ck (yes, that's what it's called) with a Singha. Unlike the food prices, I found the prices for drinks fairly reasonable and even pretty good compared to bars around the area. Overall, I would strongly recommend this place for both drinks and food. If you and your group are quite hungry, you might have to spend a lot to get full, but the drinks and experience are plenty worth it. read more

Mao Mao - Top: Kao Moo Dang, Bottom: Khao massamun gai curry - Thai Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

Food was ok but service was even worse. Had a birthday dinner with a large party and the host took my bottle of rum which was a birthday gift. We had no intention of opening the bottle and was going to put away since we understood that no alcoholic beverages were allowed. Staff was rude and shouldn't be in the hospitality business with that type of attitude. My friends and I had such a horrific experience and NEVER going back. There's many other places worth going to with good service. read more

I really wanted to like this place. Its a cool space and decorated well. The food was ok/good but a little on the pricey side for what it was. But by far it was the most uncomfortable dining experience I think I have ever had. My back, literally hurts from trying to position myself to eat the food in the peculiar dining set up they have. The chairs a very small, and not set up very well with tables. I had very little legroom, and I am pretty short myself. My friends were miserable because we couldn't relax and enjoy themselves. read more

Awesome atmosphere... A really cool casual spot to go to if you're looking for something different environment wise. Food is decently priced and drinks are really good. read more

Filthy, loud, hot, poorly ventilated, dark, crowded, uncomfortable, expensive, plastic forks, small paper plates to match the small food serving sizes, chicken bone shard found in food, lukewarm soda in can, no desserts, indifferent service, mandatory (unmentioned) tip added to bill for a party of five. If I wasn't somebody's guest, I would have walked out. A Chuck E. Cheese for hipsters. read more

This is my first ever yelp review and this place is the only reason I wanted to write one. We got two drinks, and order of the curry puffs, which we totally had to get another order of. The best staff, amazing ambiance, and the music really impressed me. Me and my friend felt totally welcomed and comfortable the whole time and decided it's an absolute return. The staff also brought out an order of chive dumplings on the house. Love you guys so much. Truly a sweet staff read more

amazing place with, in my opinion, the best dumplings i've ever had, period! staff here is really friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. these items are quite unique compared to other thai restaurants i've ever been to. most importantly, this is one of the most thematically sound places i've been too-- vintage everything with lots of traditional thai elements. and their alcohol selection is fabulous! read more

Mao Mao - steamed chicken dumplings - Thai Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

An opium den! Almost no light, greasy pricy food on cheap plastic plates. As a great foreign film fan, I found the movie shown here is completely lacks of artistry, even idiotic, to be frank. Space is interesting, but the execution is terrible terrible. read more

Walked in, saw a mess in the entryway (looked like a swap meet) walked right out. They were ready to seat us as if this was normal

A true culinary gem! The food is behind and its one of a kind atmosphere almost makes you forget you're in the United States. Back to my point, the food is delicious, you just need to try every item on the menu, what we like to do is order a few appetizers to share and then of course entrees. Perfect place to drink and hang out with friends. I love the vintage Thai films playing on the big screen. We loooove this place! read more

Mao Mao - Vintage Thai film - Thai Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

It was a quick trip back to the streets of Thailand in Brooklyn with a twist of old school cinema + junk yard vibe. The seats were theater style and you're surrounded by so many random crazy old school gadgets like a vintage hair salon chair in one corner plus some records, video-games, old school shelves filled with Asian spices and beverages, a giant wooden makeshift shelf they put together filled with jars jammed with medicinal spices and random vintage posters along the walls, and of course old school Asian film projecting on the wall. It's dark inside but it's a whole mood like you stepped into a Wong kar wei movie set similar to In the Mood for Love. There's nothing fancy about this place though so if you're looking for a fancy schmancy dining experience look elsewhere. Food is street style served on plastic or paper plates and you eat with plastic utensils. Cocktails served out of plastic cups and shots were served in little medicine cups. I loved the vibe and the feel of it all, but I just didn't like how low the dining tables were when you're seated. I was eating off of my lap practically, but I'll definitely be back to hang some more!! read more

Only one vegetarian main dish option. It's small and mediocre. They screen Muay Thai on a huge screen so you are forced to watch violence and blood as you eat. A pity because the place interior design is freaking awesome. read more

They don't always agree to offer takeout and the last-call times are inconsistent. Furthermore, if you're placing an order on the phone do not expect to get any questions nicely answered. They're rushed and it's loud...someone will likely hang up on you--it's happened to me more than once. read more

Great vibes, good drinks and yummy food. The dishes were extremely spicy even when we had it at medium spice. But good vibes everywhere. Love the aesthetic of the inside and loved how there's places to sit downstairs AND upstairs. read more

i really really really wanted to like this place. thai food is my favorite in the world and i love nostalgic vibes, so it seemed to be right up my alley, but the food just missed the mark :'( pros: the vibes are impeccable. even though i thought the food was pretty mediocre, i would still come again just to hang with some friends. they put so much immaculate effort into decorating and the details do not go unnoticed! i love antiques and nostalgic nick nacks and this place is FULL OF THEM and the projector showing old thai movies was such a nice touch. it's dark and crowded but oh so fun and i love how there's two levels to the space! will also be back to get some vintage thai movie posters. music is kind of loud, but our table was right next to a FUNCTIONAL arcade game!!! which was so fun since it was also free!!!! a great place just to pass the time away with some drinks and neat things to look at cons: the food :'( i love spicy/fermented flavors and really really love thai food for it's freshness, spice, and funkiness. however, even tho the menu had a bunch of super exciting offerings, everything was just WAYYYY too sweet in my opinion. this is also coming from someone who really hates sweet things in savory foods, so im sure plenty of people would find the food super tasty, but it just didn't meet my expectations! we ordered the pickled mango, pik gai zaap (chicken wings --small and too sweet), luk chin pla jaew (fish balls --very bouncy but again not super flavorful/ not sour enough), and khao kha moo (braised pork leg --almost so swee tthat it tasted like candy :'() i think if i ever do go again, i would ask for less sugar in everything and more salt. read more

Heard good things about this spot but when my roommate and I walked over at 2pm not a single staff member was in sight, not in front or back of the house. Absolutely bizarre since they put so much energy into their space but to have no one apparently working to seat us is wild. We left and came back, same deal. So we just walked out Hire more staff. read more

Love the old school/vintage Thai decor. The food and alcoholic beverages are just as amazing. A little on the pricey side but definitely justified because of the amazing quality. I can't wait for indoor dining to be open back up so I can come back. read more

Been wanting to try for awhile. Trying to try all the local places near my apt. Anyways the place was cute. I was alone and got seated in an old movie seat facing the screen. Then I saw people eating on TINY PAPER PLATES AND PLASTIC FORKS !!! I was like for these prices which are high I can imagine what kind of portions they serve. They were small of course. I had some kind of chicken wings which were good but served in a plastic cup!! So weird. I got a tiny cup of water. I even asked why are they serving this in plastic making more trash for landfills? Didn't get a good answer. The main dish was Almost 20 bucks. It was not even hot. Kinda warmish. Idk what Eater and Infatuation NYC saw in this place. My knees were killing me and so was my back when I got up. I had a slender bench to eat on and had to hold my plate under my chin to eat. The music was SOOO LOUD and annoying I wanted to get out fast. I left hungry and pissed. Also CASH ONLY of course. I had to VENMO to pay. Annoying. Place was filled with the typical annoying white Bushwick types. Anyways. I shoulda gone with my gut and PASSED ON THIS ONE. read more

Mao Mao - Pork dish. Tiny for 19$ - Thai Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

Came here on a Sunday night and the ambience was so awesome. Nicely themed with a vintage Thai cinema vibe, the food, drinks, and friendly staff really made my last night in Brooklyn memorable. I would recommend coming here to start your night off with some great food and cocktails. Definitely coming back the next time I'm in town read more

This place is UNREAL! You must go. I lived in Thailand for a year, and this place truly transports you there, its a great experience in addition to the most delicious and authentic thai food you may ever eat. Be warned, this isn't pad thai and spring rolls thai food, this is real, spicy, thai street food. don't forget to order something of the drink menu !! And buy some thai groceries on the way out. Cool staff too. read more

The most fun restaurant experience I've had in NY in years, from start to finish! The hostess was giving serious Main Character energy and I was living for it. Their style was spectacular. The decor was fun, the music a deLight, and the projected movie a visual joy. The food was amazing!! It was definitely loud and crowded so not great for an intimate catch up but great for a night out with friends. 10/10, would recommend. read more

Super authentic Thai food and an awesome dining experience. The atmosphere is definitely one of a kind. It feels like you're transported to a bustling corner of Thailand. Food is served on paper plates, and drinks in plastic cups, giving it a real "Thailand street food" vibe. The food here is no joke - juicy, flavorful and perfectly spicy. Not the place to come if you're looking for pad Thai, but definitely the place to come to if you're looking to try something new and authentic. It definitely isn't the most comfortable, with small tables and stools for seating, but it enhances the experience. Menu could be a bit daunting, if it's your first time here, so ask the servers for recommendations. Go here. read more

This place is absolutely incredible. I spent some time in the Isan region while living in Singapore, and I have to say this is the closest any restaurant in America has ever come for me. Honestly the decor and vibe is super cool. I really wanted to love this place but the food just wasn't great. Everything was okay, good, but not "I need to take my friends here" good. Which was a bummer. The flavors were underwhelming and spice wasn't strong. We ordered about 6 different things, so we did try, but it just wasn't our place. On to find the next "spot"! read more

Love this place...a gem in New York, beautiful ambiance and amazing family who runs it (they started the restaurant during the pandemic). It has a feel of being in Thailand with the Thai cinema and Thai pantry. All the dishes are authentic street food and more (no Pad Thai on the menu, and that's a good thing because it'll challenge you to try something different). I had the pik gai zapp (fried chicken dish) and the tom yum goong soup (lemongrass broth). Warning: The soup is on the spicier side. Everything is an incredible price for what you get, especially for New York. read more

This is some of the worst Thai food I've had in NYC. Extremely disappointing. I'd give the food 1 star but it gets 2 because of the atmosphere and because I was able get drunk during dinner since the service wasn't bad. We shared the larb, and papaya salad, it was all meh. My entree was the bamee moo dang which was some plain ass noodles with pork on them, minimal sauce drizzle. I would expect this type of food from a budget mall place in Flushing but not for this price. I will not go back. Do your self a favor and go to Zaab Zaab if you want authentic Thai cuisine. read more

Came here twice for the vibes, snacks, and drinks. I wouldn't come here for dinner food as much
