    Beef patties
    Denise K.

We were looking for Caribbean food downtown and the pictures seemed promising, so we headed to this third floor walk up in a stately, historical building. Beware: This is not Caribbean, it is Jamaican. Everything seemed copacetic as the decor was lovely and colourful. Then the very brief and succinct menu arrived and we were faced with chicken, chicken and more chicken. There were only two other main courses on the menu, which consisted of highly overpriced fish dishes. This being the case we opted for two appetizers and the soup of the day. The soup was good with hand rolled dumplings. The cod fish cakes were also good but somewhat spicy. The beef patties were way too spicy considering that a spice sauce was served on the side with both appetizers. My Mexican friend sharing the meal with me is an eater of all things spicy, but it was way too spicy for even him! The plates were not garnished and a sprig of wilted lettuce hung off the small plates. This is NOT a Caribbean restaurant as advertised; it is strictly Jamaican!

Oxtail is the closer one and the jerk chicken is the further one

Two words: jerk chicken. Best jerk chicken I've ever had! Unlike most Caribbean joints, this is a full service restaurant instead of a take out joint and it is pricier than other Carribean places but I must say that it's worth the price. The restaurant was completely empty for dinner but that didn't stop us. The waitress was also extremely kind and friendly. We got the oxtail (approx. $19) and the jerk chicken (approx $16) but the jerk chicken was the definite winner. Every bite was like an explosion of flavour and I enjoyed every moment of it. I was secretly contemplating if I should order another plate just to take home. The oxtail was a bit average in comparison and a large portion was just bone but it was still good, albeit maybe not worth the price. 5 stars for the mind blowing jerk chicken and excellent service. Hopefully this place gets more business cus I truly believe they deserve it! Check it out!

Came here with a friend that likes Caribbean food. She had wanted to try their Acke and salt fish since this summer's Caribbean Festival in the old port, they made her wait for 2 hours, promising that it was on it's way from their downtown restaurant. For some reason if they were to cook it on the spot it could be dangerous...?! So she gave up and ate something else which wasn't great. Our visit to their restaurant wasn't much better. The cook/owner/waiter/DJ...seemed bothered by our presence, my friend asked for the achy and salt fish and was told they were out! They were sold out for the day! They just opened up one hour earlier and there was 6 people in the dinning room! Wow! Sold out in an hour! After about 10 minutes he returned to tell her that they had just enough for one plate! I guess they must have found some through the garbage or on the floor? Oh wow! Thank you so much! Ridiculous. This is Kitchen Nightmare candidate! I ate a tiny and tasteless chicken roti. Ambiance here sucks. Staff sucks. Climbing up the stairs sucks. Never again. Boom J's in Lasalle will always be my favorite place to get a HUGE juicy spicy jerk chicken roti. Sorry but when you feel unwelcome by the staff and their food isn't any better, it's hard to give more than 2 stars.

We didn't have a reservation but the sweet man who greeted us found us a table very fast. This is a family owned business and you can tell how much pride and love they put into it. Both of the owners explained all the dishes to us and were so helpful in making our decisions. We started with the lemonade which is house made by their own mother every day. It had a different type of sweetness to it, almost like it was made with honey instead of sugar but I really enjoyed it. We also got the Trio of Salads which were so good! A few of them were a bit spicy but nothing we couldn't handle. They also kept the bread coming which I never hate! We also split the Tuna Brik and it was amazing! For our mains we had the Honey Lamb which was covered in pistachios. The lamb fell right of the bone and was so tender. We also tried the Ojja which is more of an elevated Shakshuka - dipping the bread in the sauce was a highlight at the end. Overall, this was such a unique meal with wonderful flavors. The owners service was the true stand out of this meal. They really do provide a wonderful experience for all of their guests.

Should've trusted my gut Food took ages, Courtney was STARVING and getting emotional. Her pasta was crunchy (sorry but that means RAW) and my burger tasted like it came from a packet. She sat there saying the "vibes were off" which as her mother I could immediately tell was TRUE. Staff were friendly but a bit too laid back if you ask me. This isn't a festival, it's a RESTAURANT. Won't be rushing back. Courtney says she's "never eating here again" and honestly I stand with my daughter. DO BETTER. -- Sharon x

Our waitress introduced herself right away and took our cocktail orders. When she delivered our drinks, she explained how the chef's tasting menu worked and left us for a few minutes to decide which option we would like. We chose 'tier 3' which included a pasta course and extra caviar. Everything we had was amazing, from the seafood tower, to the beef carpaccio, to the hanger steak. It was so much food, we thought we would all burst by the end. The waitress was outstanding and was completely engaged with us throughout the evening. She added so much to our experience. We opted for the wine pairings and she gave us 3 wines as well as an amaro at the end. All in all, it was a meal to remember with a price tag of just under $2,000. Well worth it. While the food was delicious, the overall experience fell just slightly short of what I would expect from a restaurant of this caliber. Service was the main area that didn't quite meet expectations. After being seated, we waited about 10 minutes before receiving menus and had to ask for them. Throughout the meal, interactions felt a bit rushed - several staff members who stopped by the table were somewhat brief, and on a few occasions, items like bread or water were dropped off while we tried to ask questions, but the busser had already walked away. That said, the restaurant was quite busy during lunch, so it's possible the pace and attentiveness were impacted by that. As for the food, we ordered the albacore tuna appetizer along with the strip loin, butcher's cut, and duck for our mains. Everything was well-prepared, though the duck portion was noticeably small. Desserts were a highlight - especially the pavlova with maracuya, which was excellent. Our server Laura was professional, though not very engaging until the very end of the meal when we were settling the bill. I would still return, as the food is strong, but I have to say that Bar George left a more lasting impression on us in terms of both food and service.

It is very satisfying. One caveat though, the oysters tend to have shell bits in them so be careful. I ordered the risotto as my appetizer even though it was listed as a main. My main dish was octopus. The risotto was perfect, the rice was just right, mussels, tiger shrimps, calamari and lobster tail. it was well proportioned, you could have seafood in every bite until the last bit of rice, just perfect. The octopus, came with onions, capers and olives, not my favorite combo but I did enjoy the tanginess at the end, it did grow on me. Dessert was lava cake with ice cream. We asked to have it with ice cream and it was amazing. Already planning my return...

Always get excited when a new restaurant opens its doors but was very disappointed by this place…read more There's was nothing exciting about this place decor wise or even food wise. First when I had to reserve at this place they wanted credit card information which is fine because some restaurants do that nowadays but what I didn't like was that the cancelation should be done minimum 2 days in advance if not they charge you 25$ for each person, I find that ridiculous because last minute emergency do tend to happen sometimes. Second when we got there the hostess asked us if she could seat us at the bar saying that the bar is beautiful and all. The brings us to the bar section upstairs and seats us at a tiny little bar which seats 4 ppl(nothing amazing)... The 2 other ppl that were already seated at the bar had taken 1/3 of the space leaving us a very tight area to sit and we were not comfortable sitting there. We asked to be seated elsewhere, the place looked packed but there was a table available on the floor but they told us that the only other table they had for us was a table downstairs, we agreed because we didn't really mind where to seat as long as we had more space to breath. Also something that we didn't like was that the bartender asked us if we only speak English, so we weren't quite sure why he did that remark because he was able to converse with us. When we went downstairs we realized that our table was next to the open kitchen and also we were the only ppl from the restaurant that were seated there. Which we found really odd and felt like the outcast of the restaurant. We didn't want to complain to much because we always try to give the benefit of a doubt especially when it comes to new restos. I have this place a 3 star because of the drinks, they were very well made. I definitely recommend to get the east and ivy if you like lychee and also the guilt and ginger if you like ginger. For food we got the oysters, these were really good and opened by a girl just next to entrance by order. The oysters were fresh and I love the dill mignonette, which was different then other places. For mains we got the mussel and fries. Which was okay eatable, nothing amazing. We got the new York strip and asked for medium rare but the steak came medium. The pepper sauce was too thick to my liking. We also got a side of onion rings and mushrooms, the mushrooms were good, the batter of the onion rings were have any flavor and it was bland. The waitress was nice but not really attentive, like I said before we got seated alone downstairs and we were isolated from everyone so I'm guessing she wasn't really reminding herself to come check up on us more frequently I guess. The food was average nothing spectacular about the food here. Also we didn't really like the atmosphere. I don't know if we just went on a wrong day or this place is always like this. Overall it seems like this place is good for big groups and I also heard that this place is considered a superclub. The music we were hearing was mostly techno. I give them the benefit of doubt of they moving us to a bigger space and also the men that moved us I think it was the owner checked on us twice to see if we were okay which we appreciated. Personally I would not recommend this place nor I will go back. For the price the food is not worth it.
