Pros: Location is great as well as design/decor.
We arrived early in the evening so service times for food was fairly quick.
Cons: Our server made the experience at Kamuy not worth visiting again and double check your bill.
Our party was a pan Caribbean group and we were celebrating two birthdays. Our server on suggesting drinks, berated one country's rum over another, in favor of his home country. He was unable to take any hints to stop his tirade.
For appetizers we had the griot, fritay, and lambi gratin. Portions are quite small, but they were okay. Pikliz is different then we are used to, more cooked than a traditional pikliz, low on heat.
For dinner we ordered steak and most ordered the chicken, which was labeled as a traditional jerk chicken. There was no taste of jerk seasoning and a separate sauce was provided (more of a creole sauce) to pour over chicken. Though the chicken was okay (a bit dry) there was nothing Caribbean or authentic about it, could have been roasted chicken from anywhere. The rice was probably the best thing on the dish. Portions fairly small.
Drinks: drinks were fine. Honestly, on the small side, few sips and done (15.00 per drink and upwards).
Dessert: we had the pain patate. It came out overdone and hard. Tasted like it came out of a freezer then heated in a microwave. No soft consistency, stale.
When the check arrived we were charged for each small serving of hot sauce and pikliz. To be clear, cost is not an issue for our group when dining out and celebrating an occasion. Our displeasure was the nickel and diming (and server not being upfront). When asked about it, the server was matter of fact and unyielding stating each serving of hot sauce and/or pikliz was individually made (what a joke), and we should know to ask. The way they charged (almost 30.00 for hot sauce/pikliz), this might as well be a fast food chain rather than fine dining. It felt like desperation with pricing and portions. Basic customer service is that you provide something complimentary to remedy a grievance or delete an item, especially if celebrating an occasion. None of this was done, instead server kept going on about everything staying on bill but we could order more as a replacement.
Always great to try new places. Although we had a good time being with family and friends, the restaurant experience here does not warrant another visit. If you are looking for some authentic flavors of the Caribbean especially in their signature dishes, you will be disappointed. Sadly, they missed the mark of the Modern, Caribbean-fusion culinary experience they try to present. If you are not going for an authentic flavor profile or middle of the road, than the meal may live up to your expectations.
If you are celebrating a special occasion, I advise you go elsewhere to avoid disappointment. read more
