Potatoes au gratin
Jennifer L.

I treated myself to a fancy French dinner on my trip to Montreal and this place was recommended by a local. And it did not disappoint. I had the grilled octopus and it was amazing and a nice green salsa that reminded me of the green sauce. They provided Indian restaurants. The octopus was grilled to perfection. I also ordered the duck on feet and potatoes au gratin, which were all delectably rich. I tried the tequila and grapefruit cocktail that I'm forgetting the name of that very refined and delicious this place provided excellent service. I didn't need a reservation and was able to sit at the bar in the brasserie. Definitely recommend this as a great date spot or for special occasions. The service was attentive and prompt.

Overall: A // 5 stars Pricer side of restaurants for lunch where the atmosphere seems to be primarily business meals. That being said, the dining room is impressively long and expansive split into a more lively brasserie style offering and a more fine dining pre fixe of options. The food reimagines classics in a new light, which servee as a pleasant rebirth. (Bluefin Tartare: B) - Love the fattiness of the fish that carries; the olives add a beautiful acidity while the cheetos style puffed rice adds a crisp; normally tartare dishes have some height and I think that wouldve helped out with the presentation here. (Lamb Chop: A+) - Beautifully executed lamb dish that plays to the Brasserie heartiness, but elevated in a lighter and coursed meal way. The abundance of vegetables on the plate brought a lot, from the tender leafy pea shoots, to the squash to the quenelle of egg plant. The lamb was crisp on the outside with a pink interior, and the sausage was intriguingly seasoned with a refined cumin-forward blend that complemented well. - bone marrow snail: was ok. The snail was okay but tasted a lil harder than usual - octopus: good - bouillabaisse: my favorite part of the meal. The bread was covered in something that was so good. Soup was refreshing and seafood was fresh. Great dish - Black Forest cake: fantastic

Last dinner meal in Montreal...not too far from our hotel. Monarque named after a butterfly, is tucked away in the middle of the block and you could potentially miss it (next door to Spinella Italian restaurant). Monarque is also a Michelin rated restaurant. We had the pork chop (Côtelette de porc de Beaurivage courgette, amandes fumées, parmesan, sauce au poivre japonaise) and Bouillabaisse de poissons et fruits de mer pommes de terre au safran, rouille. Yes all in French! Fortunately, our server translated nicely. The pork chop was moist but a little too aged, The bouillabaisse had fish, mussels, shrimp and scallops (nice flavoring). Great selection... Our server, Terry, was fantastic! We had dark forest cake and a Canadian praline. The cake literally melted in your mouth. The praline looked and tasted like a chocolate doughnut. The restaurant was dimly lit and had a romantic vibe. Overall, great dining experience.

A great lunch. Casual French bistro atmosphere, friendly service. Started with the pate special but the real star was the bouillabaisse, full of fresh seafood with a great sauce. Very nice place to visit.

Signature cocktail "Monarque"

I first came here 13 months ago and remember having at the time what I thought was the greatest cocktail of my life and quite the memorable lobster thermador. So when I found out I had a medical conference planned in Montreal again, the Monarque immediately came to my mind. I had been dreaming of this meal for MONTHS now and the second time around it was even better. The serving sizes for this American were wonderful, tremendous service and the vibes/ambiance were very welcoming and comforting. Their signature cocktail the "Monarque" is truly sublime. You would never think that a drink including ingredients such as brown butter carrot juice , white vermouth, pisco, and egg white would be good, but the warlocks behind the bar truly made the most magical cocktail. I had to get a second.

Out of all the dinners I had in Canada, this was definitely the best! The bread was just good--sourdough isn't my fave for restaurant bread (would've loved a warm baguette instead). But things picked up fast after that. The tuna tartare was fire--super flavorful, and the creamy, salty foie gras underneath added a whole other layer. Stacked on the sourdough, suddenly sourdough isn't so boring anymore. I tried some of my veal, which was super soft and tender (also burned my tongue a little, but worth it). Not my top choice of meat, but it was well done. I got the halibut, which was really soft and flaky, but I wasn't in love with the sauce underneath--it kind of clashed with the fish. The random green vegetables were actually amazing juicy and flavorful but one of them hit me with a sneak attack of spice. For dessert, I shared the tarte tatin, and it was so good. The crust was flaky, salty, and the apples just melted in your mouth. Paired with vanilla bean ice cream. We also got the passionfruit pavlova, which had a strange taste at first but ended up being light and zefir-like. Overall: 10/10 dinner. Cozy, elevated, and full of unexpected hits.

Ribeye with bernaise sauce, side of fries.

We definitely planned and made a reservation for the bar/brasserie section via Resy again as we spent a few hot days in Montreal for St. Jean Baptiste. This time the weather was hot and humid, with temps at 36C, so we weren't going to muster more than nice shorts and t-shirts, but we didn't feel too out of place, but you should probably under normal circumstances dress up just a little bit. Do pay attention to the fact that the Salle de Manger (the hall of eating; yes, I know it means "dining room" but it's fun to play with the translation) is a different menu and experience. We haven't done that one yet. For this return, we had a table in the bar area, and it was fun to watch the bartenders performing their mixology off the mirrors. The staff were all super friendly and attentive in all the right ways, blending into the background and letting us focus on our evening together. I had the rib eye again, and of course had a side of the Quebec mushroom. These are seriously, hands-down, the best sautéed mushrooms in the entire city, if not the entire province. The steak quality this time was much better than last time. It was more tender, still very flavorful, and cooked to the perfect temperature. The fries were good, but I didn't eat so many as I was focused on my great steak and the mushrooms. Did I mention how amazing the mushrooms are? If you like mushrooms, you need to order these. For dessert, we both had the Earl Grey creme brûlée. It had hints of Bergamot and tea, as you might expect, and it was an interesting take. The Earl Grey was not overpowering or ruining the dish but added a fun flavor to it. Will definitely keep it on the list of places for future trips. You can see why it is a Michelin recommended locale, where you should definitely order the Quebec mushrooms.

Definitely make reservations, we made reservations a little before we came on Open Table and while we were waiting to be seated two other groups came and were turned away since they didn't have reservations. The wine collection on shelves over the bar was very impressive. I normally don't see that much wine in a restaurant. I got their special appetizer of the day with tuna, and it was fresh, delicious and plenty for me to have as an entree with the addition of the potatoes au gratin/scalloped potatoes side. It was enough to share and had paper thin slices of potatoes in a delicious white sauce. It was even better than mom's! We were at a table across from the bar, and they are pretty close together. There is another bigger dining section in the back. Really good food but it was a bit noisy with the packed bar and restaurant. The host and waiter spoke English fluently.

Excellent cocktails and best steakhouse per the local couple seated next to us, said this was the best place for steaks. I guess it explains the glass walled room aging racks of steaks. And while I did not come here for the steak, my friend ordered the ribeye and it was really tender and flavorful! I had gougers, marrow and halibut! I also had the Monarque cocktail with the logo sprayed on a stencil to create the butterfly-this drink was a bit sweet but not bad. Overall a nice time chatting with professional bartenders and friendly locals. Restaurant has two types of reservations, brassière and fine dining. You can order ala carte at the bar which we did and the portions are larger than we'd expected. My fav was the halibut and I tasted the steak-it lived up to its reputation! Place was rectangular adorning the bar seating and standard tables. It also has the glass walled room housing the steaks being aged. The bar was long stocked well with wines and well drinks, which I thought had the best seats for lively conversation and great dining experience!

Wow. This restaurant has two options. Whole table cloth reserved tables and a bistro bar option. We didn't have the reservations so the bar and bistro was the option - and I was delighted! The steak tartar made spicy with house made Tabasco was excellent and pared perfectly with a white wine chosen by the bartender. My favorite was the fiddle fern, morel and asparagus side dish that showcased the fresh local produce of Montreal. It was generous serving of morels that really stole the show. My friend had the ricotta ravioli that was as light as it was savory. Delicious! I will be back for more and next tome I will try an expertly made cocktail.

Overall really enjoyed Monarque! We opted to do their more "casual" option (I.e not the 5 course menu), and had a wonderful experience. We started with the oysters, which were fantastic and very flavorful. The complimentary bread we received wasn't my favorite - the bread wasn't warm and the butter was cold too, which wasn't ideal in my opinion. We also got the mushroom gnocchi dish for an appetizer which was divine - a must for anyone who loves mushroom. Our mains were the lamb and the duck . I'd say the duck was the more delicious of the two, but both were excellent. The duck meat was amazing and melted in your mouth. For dessert, we chose the Black Forest cake, which wasn't quite what I expected. The actual cake part was bit dry, but the flavors meshed well together. Our service was really great, and we were well cared for. I would come back to this restaurant if the opportunity presents itself. A solid introduction to what Montreal has to offer!

Bone marrow and escargot
Jillian B.

Monarque was my favorite meal during my travels in Montreal. The service was perfectly attentive and the food absolutely delicious! My partner and I walked in and were lucky enough to get a table right away, with a view of the kitchen! We opted to share a bunch of appetizers along with an order of steak frites. The bone marrow and escargot were our unanimous favorite, though all the dishes were excellent. Octopus perfectly cooked, generous portion of tartare. Steak was cooked perfectly medium rare and the butter and fries it was paired with complimented the meat nicely. We weren't originally planning on dessert, but the chocolate and tea creme brulee looked too good not to get... and it was so worth it! Would absolutely recommend Monarque to anyone looking for a special meal in Montreal.

Got to try some delicious food during my short weekend trip to Montreal Quebec…read more A friend organized a lunch for everyone before we all headed to the airport and funny enough this restaurant was in the hotel my friend and i stayed at. The restaurant was super quiet when we went as it was a Monday afternoon when most people were probably at work. The interior was quite elegant very clean and royalty looking. The service was 10/10. Waiter was very attentive and we could tell he paid attention to detail. He gave great food recommendations and definitely had knowledge of what's on the menu. Now as for how the food and prices were? Prices i'd say are pretty standard and reasonable. The squash soup was so yum and comforting. It had a puree texture to it. Good serving size. I would order it again! We obviously had to have some mimosas and yes we paired it with orange juice. The duck confit may have been a bit too much for me. Large portion and i couldn't even finish half of it. But it wasn't dry and the veggies had a nice crunch and the lentils were very filling and healthy. The flavour notes all went together but i'd definitely say the dish was more on the healthier side. The chicken supreme on the other hand .. although healthy it was still cheesy and buttery. Considering it was chicken breast it didn't even taste dry so i definitely appreciated that. The risotto paired with it was the star of the show! The restaurant takes resos online and they do have brunch on the weekends, happy hour menu looks promising. If i'm ever in town again and in the area i'd want to try their happy hour or chacuterie spread!

(Hotel restaurants, can be good/bad) We were definitely not dressed up which I was worried about but it wasn't an issue, we started with beef carpaccio and charcuterie, the pate was absolutely amazing as were all the cured meats. The beef carpaccio, was for me a little bland, I would have hit it with a touch of salt, but once you got a piece th at had balsamic drizzle it really opened it up and changed my mind. (I wish there was a little more of the balsamic. My husband had the Cornish hen, and I had the filet mignon, both were absolutely amazing, I even stole a little of his Bleu cheese for my steak. Steak was cooked perfectly, the sides were amazing. Our server was on point, his name was Pedro, I had asked him to send out a dessert privately and it was our 1 year anniversary, even though we were not dressed for the occasion as we were both exhausted from travel, We will probably be in for lunch tomorrow!

The octopus is impressively tender and could not be cooked nor seasoned better. The potato component was omitted due to dairy, but the dish is already perfect to me.
