We tried Mami's Empanadas after noticing several food trucks on the street outside our hotel - this being one of them. The experience was just okay. The empanadas weren't fresh, they had been sitting in a warmer. We tried all 3 varieties of empanada and all 4 sauce options. The empanada's tasted good, but they were luke-warm on the inside. If they were hotter I think I would have enjoyed them even more. The meat filled empanadas were very good, but we found the domino (bean and cheese) to be a tad lackluster in comparison. The truck was a block or so from the southern end of Waikiki beach; so a fairly quick walk for a beach day snack!

We loved these! Pleasant surprise. Reasonable prices--we got these & went to the resort & made rice & cut up a pineapple! Delish! We had chicken, beef & potato & bean cheese. Beef & potatoes was our favorite. Masa was perfect! I love how a lil cutter marks which empanada has what filling in it!

Off to watch sunset at Waikiki & fun thing to do with that is have something to munch while enjoying the sun setting in for the day. Got myself some empanadas to go and glad I did. This food truck was conveniently located on Hyatt Place's side street. Along with other food trucks (which I'm gonna try next time) Mami's Empanadas humbly offers 3 flavors ftm (beef & potato, chicken, vegan potato). Food: Chicken Empanada - filled with chicken meat, tasty and seasoned well. A bit dry but for quick eats like this, not bad. Beef & Potato - more on potato and less beef meat. Kinda dry filling and would probably skip this one next time. I'm not sure but the empanadas looked like air-fried. I'm so used on deep fried empanadas way back home and it's always hit differently. These empanadas are small too so don't expect too much from it. Other than that I enjoyed my sunset viewing with my empanadas. The guy who's also a cashier and at the same time preparing the food was very nice and helpful. He even suggested the garlic sauce on it which I agreed and t'was actually a good idea for dipping sauce. Mahalo for reading and happy juandering fellow yeeps!

Great empanadas and decently priced. Tried three flavors- chicken, beef and potato, and domino (beans - cheese). My favorite flavor was the domino, but they are all tasty and filling. Bonus that they are gluten free since they're made with corn masa.

Quick eats. Amazing service. Really nice owner of this place. His truck is parked on a side street with a few others. We got 2 beef potato empanadas and requested for a few sauces and he was so excited to share sauces and let us try a bunch. Highly recommend. We actually walked out of our way to try this!

I was excited to try these because it's the only Colombian food I was able to find in Hawaii. I ordered the chicken, beef, and Domino empanada and tbh they were pretty mid. The dough was bland/flavorless and they didn't really have much meat in the inside. The temperature was okay, could've been a little warmer. Overall, I wouldn't go out of my way for these again. I've had better empanadas in other places (I'm Colombian so I know a thing or two about empanadas). However I do need to say that the guy working the food truck was very friendly and helpful. He provided great customer service.

    Chicken and beef empanadas nice!

It is great ti have latin flavor in Hawaii, service was great! Spot is convenient and available parking

Got a beef empanada and chicken soffrito empanada. The empanadas were ok but definitely worth a try. The prices a bit steep for one empanada. It's still worth a try though if you are in the area. They are in Waikiki near where all the hostels are. Parking can be a bit challenging but if you are on foot in the area then you should check it out.

I was staying at the Hyatt which is right next door and wanted to try this food truck. After reading all the great reviews and recommendations on calling/texting your order in advance I did just that. I ordered beef and chicken empanadas and the arepa de chocolo. The food takes awhile so you need to order in advance, my order took about 40 mins. The beef empanadas were good but the chicken ones were amazing. I'm usually a more of a beef eater but I was surprised how delicious the chicken ones were. The arepa was also amazing. It was really nice to find a Colombian place in the middle of Waikiki.

Flavorful empanadas. I had the beef empanada with mild salsa and it was a nice snack. I would love to come back and try the other items as well! There was no line and it was quick and easy to get my food.

Charging $4 for an empanada that's literally 3 bites is expensive. I had the black bean & cheese empanada & it was okay at best. I've had some very good empanadas & these didn't even come close.

Okay, so the ordering process is complicated and tedious...we basically got the lecture from owner to text him first before ordering....if he has the item you're ordering then cool otherwise wait until the next day...!?!? We tried both the Cubano sandwich and empanadas. IMO, Cubano sandwich was decent but too salty for me. Empanadas were kinda dry. But I still think others might like it they were it is, to each his own.

The location off the beaten path is what originally drew me in. The exterior patio seating with blue umbrellas made me curious. Once I walked inside, I instantly knew the Cuban food was going to hit. Not only did it hit, it exploded into space and I returned 4 times on my vacation and recruited family members to go multiple times as well. On my first solo visit, I was going in to strictly get coffee and then decided to give a main dish a shot which was the traditional cuban. Let me tell you - I wish my husband was with me as the portions here are out of this world. This dish came out on a colorful dish on top of a bamboo board with fruit galore! It looked like a painting that I shouldn't touch but rightfully did. Needless to say, I had a leftover box on day 1. I then returned more times and want to highlight the Monte Castro sandwich which I fortunately or unfortunately split with my husband. Unreal!! It was drizzled in honey, served on the bamboo plate, had double decker bread and a plethora of fruit and some picked veggies on the side. I don't want to say more because I want everyone to go and split this meal with a loved one. It is award winning deserving. For my 3rd visit, I had the papaya bowl and once again - it was fantastic and required a to-go box as well. I'm so sad to know I'll never get to try the tres leche French toast as my vacation is coming to a close and there are so many more items I wanted to try. Castro's knows how to do it and I really think all restaurants should take notes from this establishment. From the water guns to spray the birds away to the dining service experience to the quality and taste of the menu item - chef's kiss. Thank you, thank you!!! Best meals in Hawaii hands down. First, being Hawaii, decent means not using pasta sauce to replace pico, not using shredded processed cheese, and not using refried beans from a can. Don't think of comparing this to that "authentic ethnic" spot in LA or the over border drunken stint in TJ. All the requisites from tortas, burritos, tacos, enchiladas, fajitas, sopas including pozole and menudo, on offer. Complimentary C&S, just OK. Kinda soggy chips and the watery salsa doesn't much depth despite being fire roasted and not much spice heat. No complaints on the basic rice and refried beans that accompanied the large, stuffed trio of chicken empanadas (usually comes with two, add an additional for $5). Flavorful enough but not that complex mole. They are finished off with some sour cream, raw onions and crumbled cotija. Solid. Fast, friendly service with servers who seem to know their regulars well. Fair pricing with almost everything sub $30. It is what it is. Not bad for Hawaii and works to scratch the Mexican itch.

Side note, the last time I ordered the stew/rice combo, it wasn't enough for the Mr, and since there was rice at home, he ordered the stew separate. I was in a meeting, and would enjoy my food after I was done. As I stepped out of my home office, I see hubs hardly at any stew, and I asked him if he was waiting for me to eat. He said no, and told me "if you want the stew, you can have it". Oh no, I know exactly what that means, so I offered him half of my pastele plate. He said no, and he looked bummed out. I knew I would need to reheat my plate, as it sat for 20 minutes before I got to eat it. While I was reheating my plate, I took a bite of his stew. I had to stop and look at the stew and it looked different. So I took another bite. The taste was ok (not like the amazing stew in the past), but the meat had a different texture. One more bite.....that's when I realized and then asked hubs, "Is that ground pork? Is that why it's different?" And he agreed, "that's what it is! ground pork!" The flavor was a bit off too, but the meat made all the difference. My reheated #5 plate was fine, a little bit salty, but just fine, no complaints. Finished up with the pastele lumpia, which was greasy (usually is unless its fresh) and asked hubs about the bill. Well, I understand inflation is a terrible thing for small businesses and consumers, but my jaw dropped when he said it was $50. And he wasn't a happy camper about the price or the stew. -Sigh- I don't give up easily on places I've enjoyed for years, so I will be back, eventually.
