My Friendsgiving contribution: chicken empanadas and chimichurri. I went home with an empty platter!
    Cindy B.

Papi's chicken empanadas are wonderful little pockets of deliciousness! I needed a meat dish to bring to a Friendsgiving potluck, and thought EMPANADAS! My ex-sister-in-law who lives on the mainland (affectionately known as my outlaw) married an Argentinean fellow, and learned how to make empanadas. Since moving to Oahu, I've been on the lookout for empanadas. I found my spot. If you haven't tried Argentinian empanadas, you need to go see Papi. Like...right now. Ok, maybe not right now, but whenever they set up shop. Not only is the chicken empanada delicious, their chimichurri is KILLER.

Happiness does come in small packages. Papi's empanadas are fried little pockets of flavor. We tried the Crab, Chorizo, and Corn. The Crab was filled with a cheesy filling that would also be a good dip. The Corn had bell pepper and onions and was fresh and sweet. The Chorizo had the perfect spice. Find some shade, top everything liberally with their Chimichurri sauce, and wonder why you didn't buy a few more.

I was walking by this stand at the Honolulu Farmers Market (Wednesdays 4-7p in front of Blaisdell) and wasn't feeling a full meal so paid $5 for a beef empanada. It came with a little cup of green sauce (similar to a chimichurri sauce) on the side. It was bursting with flavor, spice, and juice. The outside was nicely crispy. The sauce was the perfect punch of herbs and garlic and acid. I inhaled it then immediately went back and paid another $5 for the chorizo empanada and $3 for the tastiest alfajores cookie I've ever had. You have to try this place!!!

These little dough pockets are packed with so much goodness you can't help but smile. Papi's Empanadas is found here at the Honolulu Farmers Market on the Blaisdell grounds Wednesday evenings 4pm-7pm and with parking close by makes it an incredible convenient after work pit stop for dinner or just that craving you had no idea you needed like I had when I saw this here lol!! Papi's offer a fantastic choices of filling from beef, pork, chicken and even some veggies with some special empanadas of crab and lobster...how bougie!! They also have a healthy green smoothie and the most beautiful quinoa salad which is tossed in a lemon vinaigrette. A little bit of naughty and a bit of nice Papi's Empanadas was a delight that I'm so glad to have given them a try. Where can you find Papi? Follow them on Instagram @papisempanadas and check them out! Thank you!

Business is located at Honolulu Farmers Market on Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. They are located near Ward Ave side of Blaisdell Concert Hall. I asked owner what was the popular flavors for empanadas. He recommended beef, fungi, and lardon. His daughter was helping him. The empanadas were prepared. This is my first time eating empanadas. At home, I cut them open and ate them with the sauce. Batter is thick with little crisp. ,

That all changed when i tried Guaiqueri maybe a month or two after my mouth healed. Their empanada's weren't oily and hard (even if you air fry it later if you even end up with extras). They are mostly pop up and you'll have to check their instagram for their schedule. Most of the time they are at some kind of farmers market somewhere. Their empanada's start at about $8 and don't forget the sauce! my favorite is the beef and it's always sold out before i get to it. LOL. Tip is to go early and order if you can. Service is always wonderful as usual and her kids love playing with simba all the time. I think Simba want's to work there part time and supervise the food, lol.

Empanadas were yummy! 4 minutes to fry so wait was quick. The dough/crust was tasty, but a bit greasy. Fillings were also tasty. Shredded chicken had great flavor. Seafood consisted of chopped up large pieces of octopus, shrimp, and calamari. What's even better was they were surprisingly still good when microwaved the next day (was too lazy to heat it properly). Definitely dip with lots of sauce! Unfortunately the tres leches was just ok - cake with frosting. Will definitely be back for the chicken and seafood empanadas!

She's also from Argentina originally, so they were the same type. The prices are the same, but they did adjust the discount structure a little. They used to offer either a discount, or a free empanada when ordering a certain quantity, but apparently no longer (understandable). They also used to provide a free serving of their amazing chimichurri with a quantity order as well, but either they forgot, or they discontinued that practice as well; and unfortunately, I forgot to check my box and order one before I left. They seem to be doing well, because several items were sold out, but they do have a wide variety, and there are enough choices to satisfy any tastes. I really must remember to come more often.

With that being said, we have been to a few modernized empanada shops on the mainland so we were excited to try this spot. We found the dough to be softer than what we're use to from both Mexican & Colombian empanadas. The dough on one side was soggy while the other side was slightly more cooked. We got the ossobuco & corn empanada and while the filling was good, it wasn't anything special.

The pastries weren't bad by any means -- the texture was decent and the ube flavor was present -- but nothing really stood out. There wasn't that rich, nutty depth or vibrant sweetness that makes ube desserts memorable. It felt more "middle of the road" than crave-worthy. Not disappointing enough to regret the visit, but not exciting enough to rush back for seconds either. That said, the people who work there were genuinely kind and welcoming, which definitely made the experience more enjoyable. Great service always goes a long way. While the pastries themselves didn't blow me away, the friendly atmosphere was a highlight.

The ladies there are very nice but was trying to sell me a lot of items that wasn't displayed in the front area and just stared at every movement I make making the vibe feeling uneasy though with just so much to choose from I just made a quick decision for the Pineapple loaf and Puto I haven't tried the loaf but sounded like a great shareable item while Puto is something that I do love and decided to give them a try...though one thing I didn't like is I didn't know any of the prices so it was all a surprise. Another thing you do need is bring your own bag...they charge for everything a single plain brown paper bag was $0.26 aiiiiii! They do conveniently open early at 4:30a and with a few parking stalls right in front it's a great stop for some local favorite treats at any time of the day. Thank you!

This food truck hit the road and I was so lucky enough to enjoy their crafted empanadas at the latest Art + Flea in downtown Capitol Modern as this event was just amazing showcasing local artist and businesses of all kinds and here was Tango Argentinian empanadas and yes I knew they'd be there so you know I was excited. I brought my bestie as well on this perfect planned night and we wound down on this chill Friday night as we glanced at the menu listing the featured flavors of the night where you can get a single for $6 or three for $15 so you know we got the three and two chimichurri sauce for $1 each she chose the Beef while I chose the Asparagus & Mushroom and Pork though no chimchurri fries sadly. As it takes a few minutes for our order we browsed and shopped more as I got a drink from La'a Kea Wellness Bar we then went downstairs which there was lots of indoor seating to get cozy and just dove into them. The traditional beef was a flavor explosion beyond what we expected as all the empanadas was filled perfectly and cooked to a light and crisp shell yet totally hot on the inside. I wished I got the pic of the cheese pull it gave as we both didn't expect that and enjoyed it all especially with the chimichurri sauce and glad that we got one for ourselves. I need to give their chimichurri fries a try and make the drive to their food truck cause as these guys was so amazing describing it all to us...great service and food! Thank you!

They're located on the corner and once you see a tent & smell bbq, you're at the right spot. This restaurant gave karinderia vibe to it! Karinderia is basically like those food stalls they have in the Philippines, where they have a bunch of dishes and you sit out to enjoy the food. Home cooked & affordable eats. They have everything from bbq sticks, adobo, lechon, kilawan, lumpia and more. I got the bbq stick & chicken inasal plate. The bbq stick was packed with so much flavor! The chicken inasal was more on the huli huli side & was served with Filipino dipping sauce. They also offer free sabaw with your meal. Ordering was a little complicating, they have a menu outside with food and also more food inside. The bbq items were cooked by order and the inside food had more of the Filipino dishes like (adobo). But next to the cashier, you could also find other fried dishes as well. So a little complicated. You also have the option to sit outside under the tent or inside the restaurant with AC. For this type of place, if you're dining in, you order & eat first then pay. Like any karindera. Overall, this place was VERY good & SUPER AFFORDABLE.
