My Friendsgiving contribution: chicken empanadas and chimichurri. I went home with an empty platter!
    Cindy B.

Papi's chicken empanadas are wonderful little pockets of deliciousness! I needed a meat dish to bring to a Friendsgiving potluck, and thought EMPANADAS! My ex-sister-in-law who lives on the mainland (affectionately known as my outlaw) married an Argentinean fellow, and learned how to make empanadas. Since moving to Oahu, I've been on the lookout for empanadas. I found my spot. If you haven't tried Argentinian empanadas, you need to go see Papi. Like...right now. Ok, maybe not right now, but whenever they set up shop. Not only is the chicken empanada delicious, their chimichurri is KILLER.

Happiness does come in small packages. Papi's empanadas are fried little pockets of flavor. We tried the Crab, Chorizo, and Corn. The Crab was filled with a cheesy filling that would also be a good dip. The Corn had bell pepper and onions and was fresh and sweet. The Chorizo had the perfect spice. Find some shade, top everything liberally with their Chimichurri sauce, and wonder why you didn't buy a few more.

I was walking by this stand at the Honolulu Farmers Market (Wednesdays 4-7p in front of Blaisdell) and wasn't feeling a full meal so paid $5 for a beef empanada. It came with a little cup of green sauce (similar to a chimichurri sauce) on the side. It was bursting with flavor, spice, and juice. The outside was nicely crispy. The sauce was the perfect punch of herbs and garlic and acid. I inhaled it then immediately went back and paid another $5 for the chorizo empanada and $3 for the tastiest alfajores cookie I've ever had. You have to try this place!!!

These little dough pockets are packed with so much goodness you can't help but smile. Papi's Empanadas is found here at the Honolulu Farmers Market on the Blaisdell grounds Wednesday evenings 4pm-7pm and with parking close by makes it an incredible convenient after work pit stop for dinner or just that craving you had no idea you needed like I had when I saw this here lol!! Papi's offer a fantastic choices of filling from beef, pork, chicken and even some veggies with some special empanadas of crab and lobster...how bougie!! They also have a healthy green smoothie and the most beautiful quinoa salad which is tossed in a lemon vinaigrette. A little bit of naughty and a bit of nice Papi's Empanadas was a delight that I'm so glad to have given them a try. Where can you find Papi? Follow them on Instagram @papisempanadas and check them out! Thank you!

Business is located at Honolulu Farmers Market on Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. They are located near Ward Ave side of Blaisdell Concert Hall. I asked owner what was the popular flavors for empanadas. He recommended beef, fungi, and lardon. His daughter was helping him. The empanadas were prepared. This is my first time eating empanadas. At home, I cut them open and ate them with the sauce. Batter is thick with little crisp. ,

Empanadas were yummy! 4 minutes to fry so wait was quick. The dough/crust was tasty, but a bit greasy. Fillings were also tasty. Shredded chicken had great flavor. Seafood consisted of chopped up large pieces of octopus, shrimp, and calamari. What's even better was they were surprisingly still good when microwaved the next day (was too lazy to heat it properly). Definitely dip with lots of sauce! Unfortunately the tres leches was just ok - cake with frosting. Will definitely be back for the chicken and seafood empanadas!

This food truck hit the road and I was so lucky enough to enjoy their crafted empanadas at the latest Art + Flea in downtown Capitol Modern as this event was just amazing showcasing local artist and businesses of all kinds and here was Tango Argentinian empanadas and yes I knew they'd be there so you know I was excited. I brought my bestie as well on this perfect planned night and we wound down on this chill Friday night as we glanced at the menu listing the featured flavors of the night where you can get a single for $6 or three for $15 so you know we got the three and two chimichurri sauce for $1 each she chose the Beef while I chose the Asparagus & Mushroom and Pork though no chimchurri fries sadly. As it takes a few minutes for our order we browsed and shopped more as I got a drink from La'a Kea Wellness Bar we then went downstairs which there was lots of indoor seating to get cozy and just dove into them. The traditional beef was a flavor explosion beyond what we expected as all the empanadas was filled perfectly and cooked to a light and crisp shell yet totally hot on the inside. I wished I got the pic of the cheese pull it gave as we both didn't expect that and enjoyed it all especially with the chimichurri sauce and glad that we got one for ourselves. I need to give their chimichurri fries a try and make the drive to their food truck cause as these guys was so amazing describing it all to us...great service and food! Thank you!

Besides several familiar sellers being gone, the number of vendors seemed to be less than I remember. Bringing a friend to this market, I wasn't sure whether he'd been here and I walked off to use the restroom which is now the one on campus. As I returned, my friend had wandered to this stand and generously shared what he bought with our other travel companion and me. He bought the Empanada especial which was crab (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=kWEPRzOWs2EtocPcEAaSLw), real crab meat, potato, smoked Gouda cheese, mayo, onion; it came with a delicious green chimichurri sauce (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=WS6EnU062gvtZnct4DPPog) that we dipped them in. Not expecting this treat, I first took a bite and it was tasty, not knowing the flavors and ingredients. We toasted our landing here (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=72&select=fpX7EDFfjUJTUwsveh5Elw) and started dipping it in the provided chimichurri sauce. Since we were walking the rest of the market, I didn't stop here and only got details about this business and what I ate from taking a photo of their stand (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=72&select=xnYnbxbbydTYYSmFCRZ-mg). They don't have a permanent location, and do pop ups at various locations. I love a great empanada, and have been getting mine from the "other" empanada store that opened in early 2024 in Kailua. These empanadas are really small for the $5 price 3 for $13), but that's the only "negative" about it. It's about 3 inches across, which is about half the size of a "regular" sized empanada. Empanadas are more of a snack anyway, but two or three would make a meal for me, just not at this size (lol). The taste and texture are really great. The crust is flaky and slightly crisp, like the outside of a biscuit or a pie crust, which is really nice. The fillings are very tasty, and they have a good variety. I tried the Greek empanada, and the Cochinila, which is a slow roasted pulled pork. They were both very good and flavorful. They provided a small dish of chimichurri, fresh, tart, and slightly spicy. Their special one is their crab empanada ($6), and if they're a regular at the Kailua FM, I may try that the next time. Overall, they're very tasty with a great texture, but a bit pricey.

The owners and their family run the place and in true Filipino hospitality, they served us buffet/family style and entertained us with their stories from their humble beginnings to what they are today. The food was the best I've had in the Island. Hands down. They're located on the corner and once you see a tent & smell bbq, you're at the right spot. This restaurant gave karinderia vibe to it! Karinderia is basically like those food stalls they have in the Philippines, where they have a bunch of dishes and you sit out to enjoy the food. Home cooked & affordable eats. They have everything from bbq sticks, adobo, lechon, kilawan, lumpia and more. I got the bbq stick & chicken inasal plate. The bbq stick was packed with so much flavor! The chicken inasal was more on the huli huli side & was served with Filipino dipping sauce. They also offer free sabaw with your meal. Ordering was a little complicating, they have a menu outside with food and also more food inside. The bbq items were cooked by order and the inside food had more of the Filipino dishes like (adobo). But next to the cashier, you could also find other fried dishes as well. So a little complicated. You also have the option to sit outside under the tent or inside the restaurant with AC. For this type of place, if you're dining in, you order & eat first then pay. Like any karindera. Overall, this place was VERY good & SUPER AFFORDABLE. If you want to experience a true Filipino experience with great food, this place is for you.
