The lines were not long so we didn't have to wait long for food. We decided to get a lobster roll. The lobster roll was super yummy and fresh. We also got some mochi. We got a strawberry and mango mochi. The mango mochi reign supreme. It was so good. I never had a mochi that soft and best mango ever. Delicious. Overall, a great place to check out on a Saturday morning in Hawaii!

I was ready to do a food crawl this past Saturday morning. The market was pretty sizable, and it took us at least 15 minutes to quickly walk through all the vendors before deciding which ones were worth trying. We came with pretty high expectations, so while not everything blew us away, we still got to try a ton of different bites: * Various mochi flavors from Lanikai Mochi. The owner was a great and friendly guy, too. * Fresh acai bowls with more interesting fruit options beyond the usual strawberry, blueberries, and bananas. I also appreciated that the acai blend didn't taste like it had a bunch of added sugar. * Loco moco. The steak was a bit dry, but I'll never say no to gravy. * Ginger ale & coffee mocktails from Pacifikool. These were super popular, and I'd definitely recommend. * Elote from Aloha Elote, with lots of options whether you want it on the cob or in a cup. * Fresh fruit cups. This was by far my favorite find, and if I could only pick one thing, this would be it. The fruit was much fresher than anything I'd get at a grocery store, and somehow cheaper, too. I got a huge cup of purple dragonfruit for $5, and it was so fresh and perfectly sweet. I highly recommend stocking up on fresh fruit while you're here. Overall, KCC Farmers' Market was a solid way to try a bunch of local eats, but it didn't quite live up to the hype for me. Not every vendor is going to blow your socks off, and there isn't really a great place to sit and eat besides sitting on the curb or standing off to the side. Still, we got to sample a bunch of different things in one stop, which made it a worthwhile visit while we were in Hawaii.

Far from a large scale production of a farmers market on Oahu, the Kaimuki Open market definitely…read moreisn't one of those. Close friends (if you come here enough times) and deals can be felt here on a daily basis. It's a very definitely small scale operation that takes up very little room and scores up many delightful fruits and fresh produce for your daily needs. It's not much of a theatrical production, as the larger farmer's markets in various spots around urban Honolulu and across Oahu, but there is some value associated here. It's your usual cadre of local residents that want to enjoy the fresh produce that comes with farmer's markets, but want to be within the reaches of Kaimuki town. The Kaimuki Open Market could be categorized as a small niche of people bartering and selling among themselves, but why do it in the public eye? Not sure about that, but I guess it's the way it is here and buying among friends and family is like that, along with passers by who are also looking for a great deal as well. The overall experience here was definitely pleasant, but weird at the same time. I'd come back here more, if the farmer's market either at Kapiolani Community College did not have the stuff I need. The Kaimuki Open Market is neatly tucked away in the side streets of Kaimuki town, located on 12th Avenue across the street from the First Hawaiian Bank - Kaimuki branch. They usually operate on Saturdays, Is use you where I see them. Not sure if the do this open market on the week days, but I will be surprised if they do. If they do, it will probably during normal working hours. Usually cash will be king here, since I do not believe they take credit cards at all. Luckily there is a major bank next door or across the street, namely First Hawaiian Bank and Bank of Hawaii. Parking can be plenty for all, if you use the municipal parking lot but you would have to pay money. There's always street parking nearby but there will be some walking involved to get here. Of course, there is no admission fee, so that's always a good thing. Sometimes I will see someone new in the neighborhood buying stuff from here and it's always gratifying to see familiar faces periodically on the weekends. While you won't find vendors that will cook up a tasting meal, you just find a small assortment of produce that is fresh and compatible with whatever you are cooking / preparing for the day or week. Take this opportunity to venture out in your comfort zone and come here, as the alternative to supermarkets, Costco, and other nearby localized farmer's markets in and around town. Since I do live nearby, I thought it would be a nice gesture to check things out here on a recent Saturday and hit up the Kapiolani Community College mega farmer's market later on. For me, it was the perfect opportunity to get what produce I needed for work and home, while being quite close to home really. I can shop here on the weekends and know that I can get the best price and deal for my hard-earned dollar, as well as seeking other deals for friends and family by shopping here. While Whole Foods and various supermarkets are are very much in the Vinicity, shopping here at the Kaimuki open market can be adventurous and be out of your comfort zone. It's always nice to look at first. You'd probably would find something you're looking for, but for a better deal. Support local! B+ *1400th review and 100th first to review on Yelp! Yeh!! :)

It's off to Manoa Marketplace for the Farmers Market here, I remember going to this years ago. The Farmer's Market is way smaller than KCC but has about 4 vendors and one table selling artwork. The market is opens on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00-2:00pm, Cash only but credit cards with spend amount. I checked all 4 vendors before making my final selection, on which vendor I should get my veggies from. One thing I wish I was more observant was the Chinese parsley, one vendor had a better fuller bunch for the same price, to get the value for my bucks I should of bought from the other, hehe. It was a quick visit, I ended up with fresh lettuce, more greens, avocado, fruits. Main thing I got my greens which I needed to prep our salads for lunch and happy to find it here. I have options, yay! There is also a vendor with Thai food and cut fruits for sale, ready to eat fresh fruits and farm to table Thai foods, yums! Thank goodness for Farmers Market, support local!

Also love the fresh fruit stand with prickly pear fruits, star fruit, mango, and also some homemade items like coconut tapioca pudding, mango with sticky rice, papaya salad. Crafts vendors have beautiful handmade pens, signs, bracelets. Tucked away right behind Mud Hen Water in Kaimuki, their entrance is small and kind of easy to miss. There are a few parking spots in front & a small door leading to some amazing fish. I believe you can walk in and buy fish/seafood by the pound, but I actually have a subscription where I pay X amount per month & get a "fair share" of fish per every 2 weeks. You can play around with the portion sizes and frequency too. I think currently I receive 1-1.5 lb of fish per share of whatever the catch of the week is. I absolutely love the fish I receive from Ashley. You know it's fresh, it's sustainable and proceeds go directly to local fisherman. Over the past few months, I have received so many different types of fish. Some common fish I see are sashimi grade mahi mahi, ono, and ahi. Sometimes the fishermen will bring in invasive species & I always try to grab those. I've picked up whole kanpachi and whole opakapaka. It's always a fun challenge to try and clean & break down a whole fish lol. I think the craziest thing I picked up from Ashley was mahimahi head & bones. It was actually offered for free, I ended up making mahi dashi and then picked off of the meat for lunch. On Saturday I picked up some sashimi grade striped marlin & a whole octopus. I made a marlin carpaccio and grilled octopus for dinner :) I just love how Ashley and the team make it easy for us to be more connected with our local food source. Although it's a tad more expensive than buying fish at a convenience store, it is nice to know that all the fish is coming from our local fishermen from our shores.
