The chicken thighs were beautifully seasoned and slightly charred. The meat was cooked all the way through yet still juicy with bone in thigh. The purple sticky rice was perfectly done and I love the texture of sticky rice in general. The plate also came with sliced cucumbers and pickled mustard greens (reminiscent of Vietnamese pickled mustard greens - but in a much more vibrant green color). My favorite part of the meal was the tart and aromatic sauce that came in the meal. If you're not a fan of lime juice and fish sauce, you may want to use sparingly. However, I was thoroughly enjoying the sauce and when accompanied with a bit of the mustard greens, it toned down the sour aspect of the flavor profile. Overall, so delicious and I would love to find them again and enjoy more of their menu items!

Using Yelp's Mobile Food Trucks search will identify them but you need to use another app to actually find out where they are. I ran across them on a weekend in my neighborhood and stopped by. The food is a fusion of Peruvian and Laotian by husband-wife team, Juan Ching and Kim Thepsenavong. There is a long history of Japanese cuisine fusing with Peruvian - it's called Nikkei. But other Asian cuisines, especially Southeast Asian, also blend seamlessly with Peruvian staples. Think about the heavy use of pepper and spice in Laotian cuisine. You've been in restaurants where the heat scale is hot, Thai hot, and Laotian hot. Peppers were only introduced into Southeast Asia in the 16th century. Peru is one of the recognized birthplaces of peppers, with over 300 varieties and a 7,500 year history of cultivation. Peruvian Laotian fusion works when you do it right. I had a beef anticuchos skewers plate with Laotian accompaniments. The anticuchos had a nice smokey sweet dark color from aji panca paste. The rice was Laotian, with black and white grains of sticky rice. There was pickled Laotian som pak, a vinegar marinated mustard cabbage. A fine blended salsa-like jeow mak len, full of charred tomato smokiness, savory paedek fish sauce, garlic, shallot, bird's eye chiles, and lime, was terrific on top of the marinated beef. I hope I run into Khao and Papas again one day so I can try their grilled chicken. Until then, I have the memory of a fine take-out plate of Peruvian Laotian fusion comfort food.

Although the menu was relatively small, I thought there were some great ideas. Banh mi sweet bread sandwich with a side of pickled daikon? Sign me up for one of those!! For $7 it was pretty good. The meat patties reminded me of thai fish cake for some reason, but it wasn't a bad thing. Will I be back? Ehhhh, maybe. I'd like to try some of the other food trucks more and it definitely reminded me that I need to go back to the KCC dining room for lunch sometime.

I ended up waiting about 20 minutes in line, and another 15 minutes for food, and I have no regrets. The banh mi sliders ($7) were very fresh and I loved the tartness from the lime, the crunch of the carrots, and the juiciness of the crab meat sliders. Even better was the Portuguese bean soup ($6). I still am not 100% sure what they put in it but the mellowness of the mushrooms complemented with whatever flavoring they used tasted amazing. With it being an assembly line-type poke place, I didn't have high expectations. Among the businesses in the area, this one is relatively empty so there was little wait. The worker was very efficient and friendly. You can select your base (rice, greens, or both), then fish, sauce, and additional toppings. I liked how they offer multigrain rice! I got a medium bowl with spicy minced ahi, which comes premade, and salmon with dynamite sauce. Medium bowls come with 3 sides, so I chose crab salad, ocean salad, and takuwan. Extra points for having takuwan because it's my favorite thing to eat with poke. When it came time for the sides, the worker pulled out a whole second bowl and proceeded to pile the container high with my chosen items. I ended up with 2 full bowls: 1 with fish and rice, and the other with sides. The quality of the food was about what I would expect for takeout poke, which is to say it wasn't super fresh but it was satisfying nonetheless. Because of the huge portions though, I only ate half and saved the rest for another meal. My experience was honestly a breath of fresh air compared to other places that portion out skimpy amounts of food.

Bowls come in two sizes and though my thoughts was large though I got the small which is just $13 and all bowls comes with white rice topped with the poke of your choice and it doesn't end there you get unlimited toppings and I believe there was six types to which I got the pickled red onions and crispy onions (I later realized they were both onions lol!) there was also ocean salad, pickled cucumbers, furikake. The gentleman asked if I wanted inamona and spicy sauce...uuuhh yes! Poke is obviously premade and the list of the ingredients are all in as well as my Volcano which I though for me personally wasn't spicy enough was made with mayo, sriracha chili sauce, sesame oil, and green onions and thankfully it didn't have much green onions which I don't like but hey it adds the flavor. Ono Eats by Kace was located near the front of Bellows entrance, under a purple pop-up tent with her business logo. She does all of her cooking in her cute purple trailer located behind the tent. Everyone working looked like family, perhaps her husband and children? I'm a sucker for small, family-owned businesses So this was another thing that had me sold. The line was also fairly long and the guy at the front moved it along pretty quick. He also has great customer service and engaged well with customers. Conveniently, she has a menu with her typical plates and daily specials. I assume she switches up her specials on different weekends as I was told that they're usually there on most Sundays. Now for the good part, the shrimp plates! She offers regular and spicy and I tried both. They're packed with garlic flavor and come with a dozen shrimp. She also scoops the garlic sauce on the rice. The spicy shrimp has the perfect amount of heat and doesn't take away from the flavor that was what's important for me! I also had a bite of my boyfriend's Shrimp Sub (another item on the menu) and it was so good! I will definitely make the drive into Waimanalo, every Sunday to get my shrimp fix.

Via Instagram, customers sign-up for the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month. They will message you for pickup time if you're selected. You may takeout or dine-in. The menu for 9-22-24 was a Bento and the dessert was a matcha flight - a scoop of ice cream, warabi mochi, and a regular mochi. Everything looked too beautiful to eat! We watched the workers assemble the bentos and matcha dessert flights. So much concentration and effort is put into each item! I was able to order one of the limited Kahi drinks. It's made with amazake, Yuzu purée, unsweetened yuzu soda, and matcha from Japan. The combination sounds odd, but tasted great! There were bits of yuzu with rind on the bottom of the cup. The citrus flavor was refreshing! This experience makes me want to sign up for the next event - October 13! I wonder what the menu will be...

This month of November they are serving a very satisfying HONOKEEMA curry set using HONOBONO original gluten-free koji curry paste made with five kinds of spices, fruits, vegetables, and koji; simmered with mushrooms, onions, tomato, konbuk kelp, and shiitake mushrooms. Amazingly the curry is topped with a very believable HONOBONO vegan egg yolk. The curry set is paired with a mini soup and salad of the day and a small bite of mochi. We also got the Imo Frappe - a plant-based version of Starbucks sweet potato Frappuccino and the Aki- amazake with raspberry purée, unsweetened strawberry, sparkling soda with premium uji matcha from Japan.
