I really enjoy Mama's! Everytime I go here, the meals are consistently great...Salmon BLT, Crabcake, Oysters, Mac and Cheese, Ruben...they are all great. And for the price you get some quality seafood. This place does get backed during Happy Hour tho. Our party generally stays downstair in the bar area, but I did go upstairs this past time and I love the ambiance! Mama's keep on doin ya thing! read more

AMAZING...highly recommend the seafood chowder, mussels (Cajun butter style), and fried oysters...may be the BEST mussels I have EVER had. They were tender, not chewy and the Cajun butter was perfect pairing. The fried oysters the same tender, not chewy. HIGHLY recommend. read more

Best half orange half grapefruit crushes ever! I don't like super sweet drinks, so I ask for mine unsweetened. Hell, I don't even like mixed drinks aside from the occasional crown and ginger, since I'm more of a whiskey and tequila kind of girl. It tastes like fresh squeezed juice, but gets you buzzed and/or drunk. Thus, it's awesome! The orange crush (unsweetened) is also good. I haven't actually been here during reasonable meal hours, so rating is purely based on drinks. Warning: area in front of the bar gets narrow and easily crowded (at least on a weekend night). Be prepared to get friendly with your neighbors around the bar. . read more

Their salad was very fresh with just the right amount of dressing . The blackened salmon was perfectly prepared- juicy and pink with no rawness but definitely no dryness either and was served HOT and wonderfully seasoned (and I know, being from south Louisiana) over the cold, crisp greens. The thinly sliced red onion, big juicy straw- and blueberries and morsels of fresh feta in the salad were a perfect compliment and in good proportion to the greens and fish. The portions are HUGE and had I known this I would have forgone ordering a side of shoestring fries, which were disappointing: obviously frozen, not actually thin enough to be called shoestring, and with a hint of seafood flavor from being fried in old grease. Ick. They were average to below average and were not improved by being dipped in what was likely the blandest mayonnaise in the world. Hint: make your own mayo! Your customers could be raving about it instead of being disappointed! Finally, the server kept calling me diminutive names typically reserved for intimate relationships, which is never nice. Have a little respect, please. Would you call me "love," "dear, " or "honey" in front of my boyfriend or husband? NO?! Then knock it off when I'm solo. They lose a star for the awful fries and mayo and another for the condescending server. Too bad, because man that was a great salad! They gain back a star for nice ambiance. I'll probably pass on this place and explore other restaurants in Baltimore next time I pass through but I do recommend YOU try it! ;) read more

Solid happy hour deal! Can't beat $1 oysters and, $2.50 for rail drinks, and a deal on mussels! We came on a Friday around 6, and on a day that the O's were playing, so we were a bit concerned that we might not be able to find a spot at the bar. We started off standing, but were able to put in our order. We lucked out and were able to snagged a seat as a couple left. It did get a bit crowded after, so that people were definitely ordering drinking and standing. The rail drinks are solid and on the strong side!? They did a good job of shucking the oysters -- not bits of shell left behind. The old bay butter was a bit overpowering, but still pretty good. I'd like to come back for their food some time, but I was pretty satisfied with their happy hour deals! read more

As soon as we walked in, the hostess greeted us nicely and told us that Happy Hour was happening if we sat at the bar. We sat next to the bar on the first floor as we were a family, but we still had the bar atmosphere and excellent prices. The Delaware oysters were only $1 each during Happy Hour and were really good. Also, the service was great. Our server happened to be the bartender as well and she was nice and helped steer us in the right direction. read more

Came here on a Sunday afternoon for brunch/lunch with my boyfriend, sister, and her boyfriend. I wasn't feeling well so I stayed away from heavy foods :( Our service was just okay (the waitress was kind of MIA throughout portions of the meal). The menu is extensive, lots to choose from. My sister ordered the sirloin sandwich with sauteed onions served with fries. It was very very delicious, and the fries were great; I'd probably order that if ever in the area again. My boyfriend and my sister's boyfriend both ordered the shrimp and crab imperial (it seemed to be super heavy) which was also served with fries. I went for an egg white omelette with veggies and a side of fruit (large portion size but unfortunately the egg whites looked like beaters and had a weird consistency). Overall, an okay dining experience but warrants 4 stars for the food and the large variety. read more

OMG, LOOOOOVE Mama's (as locals call this place.) I lived in Baltimore for 9 years, mainly in the Canton neighborhood, so coming to Mama's was a VERY frequent occurrence, not just because it was convenient, but because it was/is DELICIOUS!!! Mama's is a Canton square staple, and after sampling their food, it's not hard to figure out why many choose to dine here over the other various selections in the square. Their seafood is yummy, fresh, perfectly seasoned/seared/baked to perfection. They know how to delivery great seafood at the right price! After moving to the DC my husband and I find ourselves craving Mama's. Unfortunately we've realized that seafood is waaaay more expensive in DC and not nearly as tasty. It's definitely one of the things we miss most about B-more......and why we still fantasize about Mama's crabcakes, clams casino, tuna tar tare and Mac N Cheese (I know I know, Mac N Cheese is not seafood, but I couldn't help but mention this side of guilty deliciousness.) Mama's delivers on their food as well as the ambiance of the joint.......it's a casual bar with old school decor and extremely friendly staff. Though ALWAYS busy on weekends with an almost guaranteed wait for a table, the host staff is always pleasant, as are the wait staff. What to eat: (everything! But I've listed a few suggestions below): -Seafood Club -Oysters Rockefeller -Clams casino -Tuna Tartare -Mussels (in whatever sauce you fancy) -Crabcake -Calamari -Mac N Cheese -yep.....pretty much EVERYTHING ON THE MENU read more

Came here in search of crab cakes after my disappointing experience at G&Ms. I will go ahead and say Mama's on the Half shell is better in service and food. Got seating at the bar and ordered the cream of crab soup and a single crab cake platter. The soup was a little salty but overall quite good. The crab cakes here were MUCH better than G&Ms. Nice and crispy on the outside while still juicy inside. Not much filler like G&Ms but still more flavorful. Served with tartar sauce on the side which went well with it. G&Ms gives you a much larger crab cake but I always prefer quality over quantity. Also the sides (i had mac n cheese and broccoli) were also much better than G&Ms. This will be my recommendation for crab cakes to my friends going to Baltimore. read more

Coming from Philly, we were led to Mama's on the Half Shell through the good reviews on Yelp. We were looking for a place where we could have a quick lunch and stretch our legs after the long drive. Try the pan seared scallops. The fried calamari was good but I prefer lightly battered calamari. I had the Salmon BLT. Steve had the tenderloin tips sandwich. The two dishes can't really be compared. They were both very good depending on which mood you're in. read more

My boyfriend and I went here today with another couple. It was totally fine and a very typical Baltimore seafood establishment. Seating is a bit tight, but cozy. Happy hour deals: 5-7pm -$1 off all beer and wine $5 crushes 6 for $6 Chincoteague, VA oysters $7.50 mussel pots Plus a few other things but I can't remember. Service was pretty good but I would have liked to see a better happy hour for drinks as most neighboring places have similar vibes and better prices. Also, other places that offer oyster happy hours offer any oyster for $1 vs forcing you to have only one kind and in sets of 6. We did have a few shards of shells in our oysters but that does happen. If you're looking for a great oyster happy hour go to Ryleigh's in Fed Hill or try this place if you're in the area!! read more

My husband and I recently visited the establishment, for the first time and for our 8th Anniversary this past Friday, and we must say that we enjoyed the atmosphere, service, and food.....even Security was pleasant and courteous with a smile; opening the door for us each time we went into the restaurant. We had a 15-20 minute wait but that was not an issue because it gave us time to enjoy and unwind around the night time scenery by sitting at a park directly across the street. Although busy, service was attentive. For food, we had the Seafood potato skins and the Crab & Artichoke dip. Both were very tasty. We've never had a dish quite like the Seafood skins but it didn't disappoint as all the seafood flavors merge quite well with the skins, cheese, and sour cream. The dip was well prepared with the right amount of seasonings and seafood but the celery and carrots looked a little too dry and wilted to pair with it. For entrees, my husband ordered the Tilipia sandwich which was huge and very tasty....for leftovers; it was even good cold! His Jack & Coke drink was fixed just right as well. I ordered the Lobster Roll which was also very tasty with all the right seasonings... the roll which I know has to be buttered was a bit too soaked, from top to bottom, with butter. All in all, can't wait to go back during lunch and dinner times to try more items on the vast menu! Returning Guest read more

I've loved eating seafood in New England, West Coast, Savannah, The Hamptons and my beloved Hilton Head Island but Mama's has something special. I'll even say it's up there with some of the best places I've EVER eaten. If you don't mind the wait it's totally worth it. A bit small for a large party of eight even with two floors but they were very attentive and took really good care of us. Weather permitting you can also eat outside. The food was on point and very fresh. The crab cakes were seasoned with no "FILLERS," it was just an amazing and delightful crab cake. The portions are decent and the presentation was wonderful. My mouth is watering just thinking about it now. I ordered the cauliflower au gratin for one of my sides and it was to die for!!!!! My mom and I both had to order another side of it to take home with our left overs. My family really enjoyed the place and we can't wait to return. I can't say enough, if your in the area PLEASE don't deprive your tummy of Mama's on the Half Shell. It's worth it even though it's hard to find a park...... read more

So delicious. I had fried crabcake sandwich and it was amazing. Outside sitting was avaliable during COVID. Servers were great too.

Had two amazing experiences while we were in Baltimore for a couple weeks! The first experience we went for dinner where we started with the crab and artichoke dip. It was absolutely delicious and a great start to getting our seafood fix. I had the seafood club as an entree and my husband had the crab cake platter. We both left full and extremely pleased. The next experience was for brunch with some more family members. The crushes were fantastic, as were the beer mussels we ordered for the table. The crushes were a great cool down from the slightly spicy mussels. We all had a great meal experience and would definitely return next time we're staying in Inner Harbor! read more

Had a wonderful Sunday brunch here, while multiple football games were playing. These are the necessary ingredients for a fantastic Sunday. My party ordered the Oysters Rockefeller (6 oysters flavored with spinach Pernod and Parmesan cheese) and the seafood skins. If the appetizers were any indication of how delicious our entrees would be, we were in for an amazing meal! And they were... we ordered the salmon sandwich, the Ruben and the crab cake between the three of us... and that was 5 hours ago... I haven't eaten since. STUFFED. I'll definitely be back! Although, I'll probably skip the mimosa- it was a little bland. The crab cake was also very tasty, but I prefer more texture. I like crab cakes that have a crunch to them, but I ate every last bite of this one! read more

Try the fried oyster sandwich. Let it cool for a moment before you bite in... but it's terrific. The inside of this restaurant feels like a Charles Dickens novel, if Dickens had written about being a Baltimore sea captain in the 19th century with a talent for making fried oyster sandwiches. read more

Our quick weekend trip to Baltimore got off to a fantastic start when we chose Mama's for lunch. Our server was attentive enough to eye me slurping down my mojito (only $7) and after a nod, showed up with a replacement. The drinks were great, but lets get to the food! We ordered the fried calamari, it was enough for 4 people easily. This doesn't happen, but we had to leave some on the plate. We also tried the seafood melt, different and delicious, served with shoestring fries. And the coup de grâce, the mac'n'cheese, simply awesome (must order). Definitely check this place out! read more

I am not a big seafood guy. I like crab cakes, some shrimp but that is about it. I have been working in Maryland over the past few months and gotten to experience a few notable crab joints including Faidley's and a crab feast at a co-worker's house but co-worker's kept telling me, you have to go to Mama's On the Half Shell. So when a friend of mine came it town that was the destination I hit up. We went about 8 pm on a Wednesday night and were told it would be about a 20 minute wait. We headed over to the bar grabbed a beer and waited. The hostess was walking around and grabbing people so we figured we would be okay. After about 35 minutes, we noticed that there was no line anymore and that most of the people who had come before and after us had been seated. I went to the hostess and glanced at her list and noticed that she has past us. While annoying, we were immediately sat, apologized to and so our adventure began. My friend and I were a little overwhelmed by the menu and really wanted to try a bunch of items. So we decided to have 3 appetizers and split a main dish. As the food came, we realized we had ordered too much but it was delicious. We started off with the crab and artichoke dip that was served in a bread bowl, with crackers, carrots and celery. It was pretty much an entire dinner plate of crab dip that could have easily fed a group of 4. It was a great way to start of the meal. Next we had a plate of fried calamari. This was probably the best calamari I have ever had. The pieces were big and large and served with a sweet and sour dipping sauce that really was great! Our other appetizer and main came together, we had bacon wrapped scallops and the pan seared grouper with two sides, macaroni and cheese and shoestring fries. The bacon wrapped scallops were big but just okay. The grouper was quite possibly the best piece of fish I have ever tasted in my life. It was perfectly seasoned with salt and pepper and a little butter. The mac and cheese was okay, above average but still good. All in all a wonderful meal, at a very reasonable price. read more

I visited Mama's On The Half Shell after a recommendation by a colleague. Its like walking into someone's living room as you enter with vintage photos, artwork and memorabilia displayed throughout. I ordered the crab cakes and seafood chowder bowl. Two words: Amazingly Delicious! The server was very attentive and the food was fresh and tasted great. read more

A friend and I decided to stop here tonight for dinner. The food was good and Nicole proved attentive and sweet. It was an appetizer night so we got 5 things. It ended up being a fried spread with, grilled oysters, bacon wrapped scallops, fried calamari, grilled seafood pizza and seafood skins. The scallops were huge and delightfully done, not overdone and rubbery. The calamari was tender and the oysters were good and spicy(not too). The pizza and potato skins are basically the same thing on a different base; not necessarily a bad thing, but considering we wanted to try different things, it was a mild killjoy. Really laid back, good for groups; good pre-club stop or sunday brunch/dinner read more

I went to Mama's on a Half Shell on a Sunday evening and it was packed. We were told the wait would be about 30-45 minutes, but we only waited about 20. We sat in the bar area. It was noisy, but not unbearable. Our service was fine. My boyfriend and I ordered the catch of the day; I had salmon and he had the rockfish. Both dishes came with 2 sides and were very good. Our portions were appropriately sized. We saw other people's food around us. Their meals all looked tasty and their portions seemed large. Overall, Mama's on a Half Shell delivered good food and good service. I would return to this restaurant in the future. read more

Went to the place ordered food and a drink. The waitress refused to sell me a drink, despite me being over 21 because my ID was still vertical. Then had the audacity to lie to me, telling me it was a state law that I needed a horizontal license to be served alcohol. read more

Loved this place!!! Such a great atmosphere and accommodating staff. We were cold and the waiter had the temp turned up. Food was exceptional. Calamari - sweet and sour sauce that was my favorite part of the dish. Such a great dipping sauce. The star is the mac and cheese. Get it and indulge! Great Panko topping that adds the perfect crunch. The blackened scallops are a healthy portion but a bit on the spicy side so beware if you have a sensitive palate. Shrimp cocktail isn't on the menu but you can order it. I paired this with a wedge salad and it totally hit the spot. read more

Good service and dog friendly but not the best food. The crab tasted frozen and tasteless which was disappointing for Maryland. Seems like more of a drink and oyster place. read more

The food was amazing but this review is not about the food. We had the rudest waitress- keri k. Im not sure if this was towards the end of her shift or if she's just having a bad day overall but she was short and rude throughout our whole evening. My goal was to enjoy my meal as this was the first time I've ever been to Baltimore and this place had such great yelp reviews. Unfortunately her inattentiveness and blatantly condescending tone was hard to overlook. Even when my mother sweetly asked where the restroom was- she got a curt answer with almost zero eye contact. This would be more acceptable had the restaurant been packed but this wasn't the case. Sorry mamas on the half shell. I would love to come back for the food but your staff needs a lesson in hospitality. read more

Caesar salad w blackened chicken was pricey but yummy. Did take out service late night.

I come here every time I am in Bawlmer. I love the atmosphere especially the cozy second floor. The martini is stellar, the service is excellent and the food is really good. Rarely disappointed. The broth for the mussels is tasty but a bit too thick and a pheasant we had recently was a bit dry. But the oyster selection can't be beat and anything with crab is a winner! read more

This is one of the more solid restaurants in the Canton Square area. Been here twice, once with family and once for a date and both experiences were good. The worst thing I can say about this place is it's packed most of the time but I guess that's a good sign if that many people want to be there. As far as the food goes, I've had the crab dip, potato skins, shrimp salad sandwich and the shrimp with crab imperial and all of these were excellent. The shrimp salad was noticeably better than most other places I've had it which is kind of notable since there's only so much you can do with it. The bar area on the first floor seems to be popular with the younger people in the area and it's usually packed beyond capacity. They also have an outdoor seating area which is nice to sit and have a meal, especially in the Canton Square area. Definitely a restaurant I'll return to in the future. read more

My second experience was just alright. We started with a dozen raw oysters to share. Then my boyfriend and I ordered the classic platter- fried fish, scallop, shrimp, and a crabcake with two sides. We choose to get Mac and cheese and the veggie of the day- Brussels sprouts. We also got one Bloody Mary each. I may have been a tad hungover therefore I didn't drink much at this group brunch. The food was just eh. The fried platter has lots of breading. Most of the breading was falling off the seafood anyway. The bloody mary was good but I couldnt finish it. The oysters were good too. For our shared fried platter, dozen oysters, two bloody marys, and a couple blue on blues we paid almost 100$. Which is pretty hefty for sunday brunch.. we will come again for the atmosphere and the blue on blues.. not anytime soon though. read more

Mama's is, hands down, my FAVORITE restaurant in Baltimore and one of my favorite restaurants of all time. Since I now live in Arlington, my only regret is not discovering this gem sooner, i.e. when I actually lived less than an hour away. A meal at Mama's is now a requisite of any visit home and the first place I recommend when making plans to meet up with anyone while in town. I've never done brunch here, but there's not a doubt in my mind that's its probably fabulous. Pro's... EVERYTHING. Even the small size (aka limited seating and unpredictable wait times) that I would usually complain about is a pro here, because it adds to the intimate local-neighborhood-restaurant vibe. I love the decor... deep colors, velvet tapestries, Victorian window seats, dark wood, a fireplace, and old-timey photos and memorabilia featuring sea life and Baltimore. Looks and sounds like it should be formal, but instead is super cozy and just a really enjoyable ambiance. The food, though... OMG, the food. There is not a single thing I have tried at Mama's and not enjoyed. Yes, I like oysters - but I don't really love 'em and usually they're not close to my first choice on a menu. But here, I like them any and every way that Mama's make them. Fried or raw, on a sandwich or on a salad, drowned in rich stew or wrapped in sizzling bacon, they are amazing. My favorites are the Devils on Horseback (bacon-and-hot-sauce-heaven... if you are anti-hot sauce, go for the "Angels" version instead) and the Seafood Club (a ginormous whopper of a sandwich featuring layers of fried oysters - or crab cake, if you are a hater - and shrimp salad). The oyster stew is great. And so are the raw oysters. And so is the Po Boy. And so are any of the other seafood items that I've tried, particularly the rotating nightly specials. Two of the best gems on the menu aren't even seafood. One is the Old Bay Wings (a must order... be careful to order the right ones since they offer two other kinds... which of course are also good but just not AS good). The other is the Mac and Cheese, easily subbed as a side dish in place of fries and served as a generous portion in its atery-clogging, unbelievably cheesy, bread crumb-topped glory. My brother's girlfriend never strays from the Reuben - although at first I gave her a hard time for ordering a deli sandwich, ever since trying I've kept my mouth shut because it, too, is stellar. Honestly, I've never had a bad meal here. The bar area is always cramped despite stretching the entire length of the lower floor, but the people boozing there never seem to mind. If you do end up waiting for a table, definitely grab a drink at the bar. People looove to recommend the Orange Crush - I've never had it. They do have the most excellent Bloody Mary I've ever experienced. TIP: Although the main seating is upstairs, There are a few tables on the first floor in the front of the bar and one more in the back... but beware, it can get noisy down there. These seem to work fine for regulars, but if it's your first trip to Mama's, I would highly recommend hanging on for a table in the upstairs dining room to get the full experience. The only thing I can't speak to is Mama's dessert... because with Vaccaro's right at the end of the block, you've gotta make a stop there for an Italian pastry or gelato if you have even a tiny amount of space left in your tummy. Which isn't likely. Luckily, there's always carryout so you can save that napoleon or cannoli until after you've fully recovered. read more

Came here for lunch one day with a couple friends. Its a nice cozy place in Canton with a bar/pub kind of feel. The staff was friendly and polite and the menu has many options. I originally came here on the advice that they have "the Best Crabcakes in Baltimore" but unfortunately I did not order them this time. Instead, I went with the seafood melt sandwich and it was delicious. It was a mix of seafood over an english muffin with melted cheddar cheese over the top. It came with a side of fries and was delicious. The proportions were generous and the seafood was excellent. I definitely want to come back here another day to try out their brew selection as well as to verify my friends advice about the crabcakes. If you're looking for some quality Baltimore seafood, Mama's is a great place! read more

OYSTERS SO GOOD!!!!! Really fresh, several varieties to choose from. The crab cakes were the most moist, least breaded I've ever had. They are pretty rich though, so I couldn't eat the whole thing. We ordered the bacon wrapped scallops-- they got our order wrong and we ended up with the pan seared scallop appetizer. I am so happy they screwed up our order because it was perfect and tender on creamed spinach on top of a fried something or other. It came across as an amazing sweet scallop on ooey gooey spinach crunchiness. My mouth is literally watering just thinking about it. The atmosphere was vibrant and the place has a cozy old-world feel that is fantastic. If you eat upstairs, you must admire their great oyster plate collection on the wall as you head up the stairs. Waitresses are very warm and friendly. read more

If there is anything more refreshing on a 100+ degree day than a fresh orange crush from Mama's, then I've never had it. Man, those things go down easy! Be careful because they do not skimp on the alcohol and after two I'm usually well on my way... Good thing they have an enormous menu filled with delicious options to soak up said alcohol. You can't go wrong with anything here. Portions are enormous and generously priced. Happy hour specials include 1 1/2# mussels for $7!!! Served with a huge hunk of bread, this is easily dinner for two people. We adore the seafood pizza, but it is huge so order for a group or have the self control to get half of it wrapped, because if 2 of you take down the whole thing you will NOT have room for much else, and you'll be peeved because they always have interesting specials in addition to their regular menu so save some room. Hard to stay away from my perennial fave, the shrimp salad sammy. It's really two meals, the shrimp are enormous and perfectly seasoned. The seafood club is outrageous as well, you can definitely share it. I've never had anything I didn't really enjoy here, it's all fresh and well prepared. We always sit at the bar, Kara and Mike have taken excellent care of us. It's a friendly, busy place and always a good vibe to hang out. read more

Waited 45 minutes for a table. Then an hour and 45 minutes for food. Muscles were overlooked, blackened shrimp were charred and tasted like a block of salt. They ran out of the special stuffed shell crab and didn't bother to tell us for 45 minutes after we ordered. Then hovered and gave terrible suggestions on what else to order. My wife and I will NEVER eat here again and I am astounded at the good reviews as there was nothing good about this establishment. They even charged us for everything with no remorse but an empty apology. I didn't even see a manager. Unreal. read more
