Mamas Kebab serves up wonderful Armenian Syrian style cuisine. They have great stuffed grape leaves, kebabs and wraps. Food was on time and was good. Safety and service was lacking. It was hard to communicate with them on the phone and I could tell he was losing patience (which isn't what this review is about). When I got there, the man was sitting behind the counter just eating and stared at me. I said I was here for pick up. He didn't get up, just said ok. Waited for the lady to come out (not one of them wearing masks mind you) and she handed me my food. No one washed their hands before dealing with the food. No one wore masks. Came in on a Saturday and spent about 20 bucks for a combo plate. I asked for garlic sauce which the older gentleman in a annoyed manner showed me there was one in the plate. I asked for hot sauce which seemed to annoying him even further. Needless to say I asked for another hot sauce and he shook his head and threw it in there. Located at the corner of Knott and Katella in the ShoeCity and Daiso plaza where Stanton and Cypress unite sits some some true local flavor ran by a mom and pop couple. This plaza has been undergoing construction forever and a da so the outside is quite a mess. If your not looking for Mama, then chances are your never going to meet her. Or unless your yelping some place to eat, you will never come across Mamas Kabob. Parking has never been a problem in this plaza for me, just look away from the mess and tight spots or park further away and walk. We were hungry, but not to hungry for a big meal on a late Saturday afternoon. Upon arrival your greeted by an older gentlemen, who is a little bit on the slow side processing orders and isnt very talkative. Cash or credit is accepted, then your sent on your own to find a table and he then will bring your order out to you once Mama makes it fresh. Since everything is made to order it takes about 10-15 minutes to get your food. Fountain drinks with free refills are all self serve, and bottled drinks are also available. The beast and I both ordered the chicken kabob wraps which consisted on the wrap slithered with the secret garlic sauce, freshly cooked chicken juicy kabob chunks, middle eastern pickles (the purple ones) some lettuce, sliced tomatoes and some onions and rolled together perfectly. It was pretty good. After eating the wraps, the older gentlemen dropped off some freshly made baklava for us to eat which somehow disappeared quickly before I got a chance to finish mine. While eating inside a visual impaired woman entered with her precious pet companion and her family. They made their way across the restaurant and settled down at one of the tables, and the guide dog nestled itself against the wall and layed quietly without a peep. I was happily impressed that the owners never said anything to them even though I could tell they probably never had a dog in their establishment before and were not exactly thrilled. Mama just peeked over the wall, looked at the good boy laying quietly turned on an additional kitchen fan and left it at that. I was very impressed on how they handled the situation. I look for three things at a joint of this sort, as I know it's of priority from the kitchen's stand point. #1. The rice = sublime fluffy, garlicky, thumbs up #2. The complimentary humus+olive oil w/flat bread, equally good, the oil is vegetal, sharp, not stale, a rarety for lunch service. #3 saltiness of grilled meats, which indicates preservation method and overall turnover rate of lunch service, aka "it tasted so fresh!!!" rating of a place that grills raw meat 100's of lbs per week. I wanted to try Armenian food and thanks to yelp, found this restaurant. I met up with 3 girlies for dinner and we all enjoyed our meal. The service was quick and the food was good. I ordered a kafta kabob plate that was well seasoned and came with delicious, fragrant rice. I also ordered the super sampler for the table... the grape leaves weren't too sour, but it was stickier than I'm used to. Everything had such a punch of flavor! The hummus was smooth and lovely ... But the bread could've been heated more. S got a chicken pita sandwich, J chose the chicken shwarma, C picked lentil soup and shrimp kabob plate ... overall everyone enjoyed their meals. They even bought some baklava and S devoured hers haha I'll probably get some next time, but I was too full this time around. While searching for a new mediterranean place, Stephen came across Mama Kabab. First thing he noticed was the great reviews and high yelp stars. It was a lazy Saturday, and we had absolutely no lunch plans. Did we want pizza? or asian? or soup? Then we remembered Mama's Kabab! Half hour later we arrived at 2:00 pm for a late lunch, and was greeted by perhaps "Mama" herself? I couldn't decide if I wanted the chicken kabab or the beef kufta so I got the combo. It looked like a lot of food (and in a way it was) but it wasn't as much as I thought for $12.99. They gave 3 cubes of chicken, 3 cubes of beef, and 2 strips of kufta with vegetables, a serving of rice, and 2 quarter pita covered with a red pickled type paste or sauce on top. Reminded me of a pizza without cheese or topping, only it wasn't tomato paste, and it had a kick! In addition, for eating in, they gave us a basket of pita, a serving of hummus and a dish of pickles on the house. The chicken was tender but not overly juicy, as was the beef cube. I guess being fresh off the grill, I expected it to be jucier. The kufta was tender but also not juicy. Perhaps too lean? Hence the -1 star for the meat. Stephen had the lamb shank, which was a huge whole shank, also for $12.99, plus a vegetable type stew in a bowl, and rice. The broth of the vegetable stew was so good, we ladled it all over our rice. Toward the end of our meal, the older gentleman came by with 2 pieces of baklava, complimentary dessert on the house. I don't remember getting a garlic sauce, but perhaps its extra? Regardless, the food was delicious, and I'd go back again. I'd ask for my kufta to be cooked a little less, and maybe that'll make it more juicy. I had the Chicken Shawarma bowl. It only contained chicken and rice. I was a little disappointed it did not include hummus or salad or any other item like other establishments. The chicken was spiced a little to much for my liking as well. The rice wasn't as yellow or fragrant as other rice I've had at other Mediterranean places. This was an okay establishment for me. The rice, sauce, and hummus were good but the shawarma is what I couldn't eat. It was so dry, like jerky dry. No exaggeration at all; it looked and felt like plastic and I couldn't chew it. There were a couple of edible pieces so I can at least tell you that the flavors were ok (still not the greatest). I tried Mama's Kabab for the first time today, and I was blown away. I ordered a chicken and rice bowl, which came with a garlic puree sauce. Everything was so fresh, flavorful, and delicious! The chicken was juicy, the rice was cooked just right, and the garlic puree enhanced all of the wonderful flavors. I brought some home for my husband, and he loved it, too. His only complaint was that I hadn't saved enough for him! Mama Kabab herself (the owner I believe) was there, and was so nice and cheerful. Walking in the store, which was very easy to find, I was greeted to a friendly, clean atmosphere with no line and a cashier who made sure my order was to completion.
