We just ate here for the first time two nights ago--went on a sunday night around 7:30 pm and the seven of us were sat right away. The service was very fast and the restaurant wasn't too crowded but not empty. We ordered 2 house salads for the table, spicy salmon crispy rice, spicy tuna crispy rice, and edamame all to share. Everything was great, however, I would get the spicy salmon crispy rice over the spicy tuna. For rolls I got a yellowtail scallion and spicy salmon. The salmon was just covered in spicy mayo which I was not a fan of so I wouldn't recommend that/wouldn't get it again. Definitely just stick to easy and simple rolls, I guarantee that will be best. They also start you off with free miso soup which was so good and we enjoyed that. My friends also enjoyed the nigiri, and in agreement with simple rolls. The sushi in ann arbor has been pretty good, but I think this is the best I have had so far and definitely the cheapest. It ended up being $19 a person before tip, which is unheard of. Came here with a friend and ordered the fancy roll combo (around 17.00) and spider roll (around 15.00). The location is very good, it's in the UMICH campus. When we got there it wasn't packed but the service was a little slow. We waited close to half an hour for the first plate to arrive. A lot of the dishes came out at once, so I kind of feel like the waitress was just not paying attention, but I'm not sure. The food came a few minutes after we asked about the order. The combo was worth the price (you're saving like $10 compared to buying the rolls separately, so it's worth your money). Sadly, we never tried any of the sashimi rolls. The Spider roll was good. MaMa Satto is my go to spot for sushi in Ann Arbor. I've literally gone here almost weekly and it never disappoints. My favorite roll is the tuna tataki but all of them are pretty great. They also have a pretty extensive menu of rolls and appetizers to try so there's always something new to try. Besides the sushi my friends and I really enjoyed the edamame and the gyoza. We also really like the ramens and have tried the dumpling ramen and the chicken katsu ramen which come in really big serving sizes and are great to share. The calamari wasn't my favorite on the menu but easy to overlook when everything else was so great. The service is quick and the workers are great and so kind. Before the appetizers come out, the meal starts with a bowl of delicious miso soup. The sushi then proceeds to come out pretty quickly while the ramen does take a bit longer but is worth it. I had tried this place since so many of my friends had recommended it. However, when I went there for lunch, there was only one waiter/cashier for the entire restaurant. So many people had to wait to be seated, to order their food, and to pay and leave. Not to mention the food gave me food poisoning! I had a sushi roll and the spicy chicken ramen. The chicken in the ramen looked very pale and frothy (so bad I didn't even want to try a piece) and the broth (which was supposed to be chicken) smelled and tasted fishy. Mama Satto is my favorite sushi place in Ann Arbor. This one time recently my friend and I had delicious sushi and great service. It was really cold out and they brought us complimentary miso soup (which we always get) and green tea (which I think was a cold day special). I enjoy their house salad, crispy rice appetizer, and special rolls, but my friends are always satisfied with what they order. This time I ordered the Tuna Tataki and Dragon roll which were both great, and my friend ordered the cucumber roll, salmon roll, and chicken teriyaki roll. We also shared the yellowtail nigiri which was delicious. Because they weren't busy our server was extra kind and bagged our order for us. Usually they are swamped and don't give as much individual attention, that's the one criticism I have for them -- maybe hire some more wait staff. Came here on a weekday for lunch and my friend and we had to wait ~15 minutes to be seated even though there were several vacant tables. The reason for this was because the tables were not being cleared efficiently due to understaffing. I ordered the Salmon Lover which came with both miso soup and a salad; this cost around ~$15. I would say the price matched the quality of the dish. Salmon Lover comes with 3 pieces of Salmon nigiri and 8 pieces of their Salmon roll. Overall, the food was good/fresh, and I would order it again. The reason I took off 2 stars was due to the slow and inefficient service. Surprised by that though because the food here isn't bad. For food, I got the dragon roll and shrimp shumai. My sister got the ramen and we both enjoyed our food. Yelp doesn't lie. My friends and I had come to try Hola Seoul, but there wasn't enough seating in there, so we went to mama satto next door instead. I ordered the Katsu Don, which didn't have many mentions in Yelp reviews. I found out why. The pork Katsu came out soggy because of the egg coating and flavorless, and the meat itself was very rubbery. Not only that, but there were no vegetables in the dish. It was just a soggy pork Katsu, a layer of strange tasting onions, and a bed of rice. I ended up drowning the dish in soy sauce just to make it taste better. My friend got the veggie version of Katsu don and was similarly disappointed. As she put it, "it's just a bunch of deep fried veggies on a bowl of rice". My other friends tried the ramen. While the ramen seemed better than the dons at least, the waitress did not inform us that all ramens are pretty spicy, which was an issue for one of my friends. The waitress also never asked us how the food was and had minimal enthusiasm and hospitality. Mama satto's was a huge disappointment; I've had dining hall food that's better than what they served me. Can't believe I paid $14 for soggy, rubbery meat and a bed of rice. If you're looking for good Asian food, try Moon Cafe, Tomukun, or Lan City Hand Pulled Noodles instead. read more

This is a nice little sushi spot adjacent to the U of M campus. It is tucked into a little food court of sorts (i.e., a corridor in a building on North University behind Walgreens that leads to three or four restaurants). But the signage in front makes it easy to spot. We visited on the Saturday of the Art Fair. We ate a late lunch, which worked well at the time. I can imagine that it might get a bit crowded at busy times as the seating area is not that large. The only thing that did not work well for us was that the Sushi Chef was on break and, thus, no sushi or sashimi were available. But our server warned us before we sat down so there were no surprises. We made do as there were several good Japanese and Korean options available. We started with Edamame and Okonomiyaki. I was thrilled to find the latter as it is something I make a point to get when I visit Japan. It is not as easy to find in the US. Their take on it was quite tasty. For mains, my wife and I split the Beef Bulgogi while my daughter, who is a pescatarian, had the Soon Du Bu and her boyfriend had the Oyako Don. The reviews on the mains were generally good. The Bulgogi was very good as was the Oyako Don. My daughter was expecting a little more kick to the Soon Du Bu but said it was still fine even if a little weak in that respect. The woman waiting on us I presumed to be one of the proprietors. She did a very good job, was quite attentive and was rather polite and pleasant. The total bill was $66 including drink, tax and tip. At $16.50 per person with all included, I was happy with this value. We will look for this place again when we are in AA and want Japanese fare. read more

Highly recommend this restaurant for multiple reasons. First, the food is really good. State simply, really great execution from the flavors, the freshness of the ingredients and great service. Second, this was one of the only places that didn't have a 3 hour wait during a football game day. I know that doesn't say much, but for someone who was just visiting and was turned down by about a dozen restaurants, getting a place to sit and eat was golden. The sushi was really tasty - perfectly cooked rice and constructed so beautifully. I might have bit off more than I could chew because I was so hungry, but I got the seafood special curry and it was so big and so delicious. It was full of seafood and has delicious shrimp tempura as well. I ate the whole thing and loved every second of it. I came here today with a friend for lunch, it was the first time for both of us. I was in town for the Cinetopia film festival and I saw MaMa Satto on Groupon (pay $25, get $40 to spend). Both of us are kinda sushi newbies (I'm a BWG when it comes to sushi, I usually get the California roll) but I went a bit out of my comfort zone and ordered the shrimp tempura roll. I thought it would be a friend roll but it instead it had whole shrimp in it (the two end pieces), which I didn't eat. The rest of the roll was extremely tasty, though. We also ordered some meat gyoza, which was good too, and I had the bulgogi, which was very good. My friend ordered a veggie roll which was good too, and the bibimbop. Heads up, if you order a veggie bibimbop it does not come with an egg on top, so she had to order that separately ($1 extra) after she received her meal. Random, if you need to use the restroom while dining here it's in the basement (1 flight of stairs down) and you will need to get a key from the waitresses. The food here was very tasty. I found it a little pricey but to be honest I don't go out for Korean or Japanese food much - I'd say sushi prices are on par with other places I've been though.
