Lan City Pan-Fried Noodle with Shrimp
Tonia S.

Good spot that's close to UMich campus. Easy to walk to in between classes. I've come here a handful of times and the portion sizes are consistently fair while the orders are made fresh. I did have an issue on one visit where I picked up and didn't realize I received the wrong order until I was back at home. Always check before leaving!

Noodles aplenty. Bold, spicy flavor. If I lived in Ann Arbor I'd come often. But sadly, I don't. Lots of different noodle dishes to choose from and the food is fresh and flavorful with hand pulled noodles.

Delicious noodles! We stopped in for dinner and were able to get a table immediately. We got the pan friend pork buns, scallion pancakes and pork & leek dumplings appetizers- all were so good. I got the Seafood noodle soup, tons of flavor and a great portion size. The staff were friendly and helpful when we had questions. The food is pricy but almost everyone had leftovers. Highly recommend!

Lan City spread! (sorry for the bad crop, but it's about the food anyway)

I have been going to Lan City since they were a relatively new joint in Ypsilanti. I am so happy that they expanded into their spot in Ann Arbor, and their food is just as amazingly delicious!!! It's my favorite restaurant in town :) From my many visits to Lan City, I've tried a number of things, so I'm just going to list out the must-gets. - Indian Roti ($6.50): you've GOT to get the Indian Roti. It's wonderfully buttery and flaky. It comes with this thin curry sauce which is nice, but I prefer it with straight soy sauce! But try combining it with many things, you can't go wrong! - Homemade Scallion Pancake ($6.75): another bready item that is a must-get!! They are the best scallion pancakes I've had. They always come out hot, a bit fluffy but not overwhelmingly so, chewy, crispy, a bit flaky, and delicious. - Laksa ($14.50): the fact that you can get this giant bowl of hand-pulled noodles with a super flavorful broth and tons of add-ins for $14, in this economy?? Yup, mhmmm, sign me up. We get the laksa every single time and it has never missed! - Brisket & Tendon Soup ($13.25): another giant and delicious bowl of hand-pulled noodle soup that I would highly recommend. Compared to the Laksa, the broth is much lighter and clear, and the add-ins are a hearty serving of tender brisket and tendon!! - Singapore Rice Noodle ($14.95): this is just really fun to eat. I love the texture of warm vermicelli, and I love curry flavors. This dish feels like something you'd bring to a party. - Char Kway Teow ($14.50): bombbbbbbbbb. C.K.T is similar to Pad See Ew and Drunken Noodles, but I think it comes out on top. I would highly recommend ordering. And it's such a large portion that you will definitely have leftovers. While I only listed off a handful of items, everything I've had at Lan City has been good at the bare minimum. We love consistency in quality!!!! And you just cannot beat the VALUE. Value makes everything taste better. Some other great things about Lan City - Their Ann Arbor location is quite large, so there's plenty of seating. - Service is kind and no-nonsense. You can see that everyone is working hard, and I hope they are getting compensated in kind! - They now have sushi?!? And looking at the menu, the prices are great. Something to try next time. If it wasn't abundantly clear, I highly recommend Lan City. If you can, go!

Delicious food & good portions! Plenty of sunshine and seating inside, plus free wifi. Service was good and food came out pretty fast. We got the hot pepper oil noodles, garlic cucumber salad, and the mini soup dumplings. The noodles were delicious and great for 2 hungry people, the cucumber salad was solid but dare I say had too much garlic (and I love garlic), and the soup dumplings were delicious (especially with black vinegar). I added chili crunch to the cucumbers but I don't think they use Lao Gan Ma like I'd hoped.

Char Kway Teow (C.K.T.)
Trinity F.

The Char Kway Teow was way too sweet, wish it was more savory. It was also hard to find a table because there were so many trays and bowls left out, we had to move them somewhere else ourselves to make space. Might come back to try another dish because maybe it happens to be this dish I wasn't happy with.

Pork Ribs Noodle Soup

Good place for savory Chinese soup/sauce noodles. Cheap prices and huge portions, most of us could not finish. Good service, and lots of seating. Only complaint is that the scallion pancakes are too salty.

Tofu Noodle Soup (Knife) Spicy Garlic w/ Black Vinaigrette Cold Noodle (Knife)

Lan City is a solid noodle place! I've ordered the vegan Tofu soup noodle as well as the Chili Garlic noodles. Both are pretty good but on the saltier side (noodles, obviously), nothing too crazy. Food comes out really quick for a main meal. Pretty good for vegetarians looking for something with a little flavor close to campus!

Laksa w/ Seafood Noodle Soup (gluten free with rice noodles)
Han N.

I appreciate that they have a gluten free menu, and their portions are huge! The rice noodles are the best I've had in a while! The staff was very kind and patient when it came to answering my questions about the gluten free options. We ordered at the counter, then received a buzzer that would notify us when our order was ready. There are containers by the counter if you want to take any of your food home. I've also ordered the chicken noodle soup for my boyfriend when he was sick, and it came very well packaged.

I have been to the Ypsilanti location many times first time at Ann Arbor location. The inside is very nice. Unlike Ypsilanti location you order at the counter you than find a table and they provide a buzzer that will go off when your food is ready for pickup at the counter. This location offers various bubble teas the Thai iced tea was very good and the boba was very soft. The beef lo mein was some of the best, I have had you can tell the noodles are fresh and love the char flavor you taste from the wok. My wife had the Dan Dan noodles with pork very good flavor, just remember to mix the noodles as the sauce is at the bottom. To start we got the pan fried dumplings the bread is very good and fresh but the inside is very average no juice or anything inside the dumpling. The table is stocked with chili oil and black vinegar so this helps bring some more flavor.

Chili oil noodles with shrimp

The noodles did not taste that fresh. I've been to the Ypsi location which I thought was better. I got the chili oil noodles with shrimp. It was expensive but the portion size was huge. It was heavy on the oil and garlic without having much flavor.

I finally got to try Lan City Noodle Bar! I knew they had a location in Ypsilanti but realized this Ann Arbor spot existed recently while driving back to Grand Rapids from Detroit. Nate and I stopped in and warmed up with some delicious noodles. The menu is pretty large and I wish we could've tried more things. I went with the signature sliced beef noodle soup, and Nate ordered the dan dan noodles. You order at the counter and they give you a buzzer. Our food was ready quickly and I was surprised at the massive portions. The soup broth was really clear but savory and delicious. There was a generous portion of sliced beef, which was a bit fatty but I loved it. I added some of the chili oil at the table which gave it a nice kick. The dan dan noodles were some of the best we've had - super savory with a bit of that tingly numbing spice while not being overpowering. The noodles in both dishes were the perfect texture. The only thing we were slightly disappointed about was the egg on the dan dan noodles - I was expecting a soft boiled egg but it was hard boiled. Still, it didn't detract from the overall dish and we'd definitely get it again. We also tried their milk tea boba, which was perfect. The space is large and had lots of seating. The playlist was great, service was quick and friendly, and the prices were pretty great - only $13 per dish for a lot of food! There's plenty of street parking around the restaurant as well as a parking garage nearby. I can't wait to come here again the next time I'm in town.

Cockroach

We ordered duck soup and some other noodle entrée from this place a few days before Thanksgiving and my wife found a cockroach in her duck soup. Absolutely disgusting. I took a picture of it and everything. We will never step foot in this place again.

The staff are very friendly and nice. The outside has umbrellas so it's perfect for rainy and sunny weather. The corned beef hash was delicious! It had some crispyness and great flavor! The breakfast burrito was also delicious and not too big but very filling! The honey cinnamon latte was very tasty too. Nothing disappointed! You order at the counter then they seat you. The atmosphere is very cozy, rustic and cool. You can imagine being in a commercial almost. Service was friendly all visits. Food selections are brunch focused with breakfast favorites like traditional breakfast, breakfast burrito, Pancakes, and more. There are some sandwiches as well. Food quality was good for most items we had over the visits with just a few average (not bad but not great). They stop by for coffee refills and whatever you need. Definitely worth a try! The slaw has a sweet-tangy flavor that adds umph without overpowering the sandwich. As someone who usually skips slaw, it's the perfect amount of crisp layered in so it complements everything instead of taking over. The bread is toasted to a perfect crisp on the outside while the inside is soft. The contrast between the crispy exterior and the soft, tasty interior holds me in the moment. The cheese is the final touch that balances the crisp bread and crunchy slaw. Every texture works together. The portion size surprised me. I ordered the small thinking it would be light, but it was more than enough. I was completely stuffed and couldn't imagine ordering a large. I wish I could somehow fly this sandwich over anytime I wanted as I'm from another state, but it's that memorable. I actually came back two days in a row just to have it again. I've heard it's seasonal, which makes me want to come back and see what else they rotate in. The flatbread paired really well with it. The chocolate tahini shake was good. I'd heard a lot about it. My…read morefriends and I arrived 10 min before they opened for brunch and there was no wait, though the restaurant filled up quickly behind us. The space is rustic and simple, with fresh cut flowers on the tables. A majority of the walls were occupied by floor to ceiling racks of wine, as that is their award-winning product. Their brunch menu changes weekly and is extremely tight and cohesive. My party ordered the entire food menu sans olives (2/3rds of us don't like them), and two plates of the potato pelmeni. My thoughts below: Amaro Apertivo: mocktail based on the namesake dessert wine. This tasted like candy but not too sweet, and we enjoyed it a lot. Lovage soda: Google told me that lovage is an herb that tastes like citrus and celery. I am a huge fan of drinks with a twist, and I'd say that celery is a pretty big one! Crisp and not too sweet, the citrus flavor definitely balanced the Celery, and both flavors kept the soda fresh and crisp. This was great paired with the rest of the herbaceous menu and balanced out the richness of some later dishes, though it's not necessarily something I would enjoy by itself without appropriate accompaniment. Pickled egg, fried shallot, dill: I had only heard of pickled eggs in the context of strange British food on YouTube, so I was a little hesitant about this dish. The concept of an egg floating in vinegar brine is a bit off-putting, but once I powered through that mental roadblock, I found myself enjoying this bite. The egg is perfectly cooked with a slightly jammy yolk, and the shallots added a much needed crunch. Dill enhanced the pickled taste while cutting through the richness of the fried shallots and yolk. Sourdough focaccia, whipped butter: Never in my life have I ever made focaccia this tall. This focaccia was raised by a loving family and nurtured to develop a golden, non-greasy, crisp crust protecting its tender, pillowy innards. The classic sourdough tang is a novel addition to each bite, and cuts through the creamy, whipped butter to keep me wanting more. I could eat a whole pan of this alone, but we had many more plates to sample. Saucisson sec salami, pickled carrot: This is a simple, charming, carb-free mini charcuterie; place a slice of salami, some of the mozzarella (next dish on this list, below), and its oil atop a pickled carrot base, and you are in for a perfectly balanced treat. My favorite part of this dish is the fact that the salami was incredibly savory, and not too salty. The more you chew it, the more the flavors express themselves, so be sure to chew slowly and thoroughly! The crunch of the crisp, dill-pickled carrot and the soft chewiness of the mozzarella give each bite a lot of good contrast. Mozzarella, green garlic oil: Fresh, hand-stretched mozzarella is something that even I, a notorious cheese-hater, can't say no to. It is not sharp or funky at all, nor is it too salty. Most of the flavor comes from the green garlic and olive oil smothering each bite. Fresh and floral with a little bite, this was delicious with the salami and carrot above. Potato pelmeni, asparagus green adjika, sour cream: Given the portion size of the previous dishes (small, tapas vibes), we were not expecting the platter full of double carb heaven that met our eyes. And we ordered two!!! This is a gorgeous dish with plump, quarter-sized pelmeni nestled in a vibrant green asparagus and herb sauce with a dollop of sour cream on top. This was a classic comfort dish with a verdant twist! The pelmeni were stuffed full of creamy potato, and the dough was cooked perfectly al dente for a satisfying, pillowy bite. The sauce was homey but packed with zippy flavor and tender asparagus. The major feedback I have for this dish is that it was way too salty, to the point where the flavor was a tad too sharp because of it. Lettuces, radish, pumpkin seed, caraway vinaigrette: It was through this dish that I found out what caraway tastes like and through this dish that I figured out that I'm not a caraway fan. The lettuces were bitter and when combined with the slightly medicinal caraway taste, wasn't for me. The crunch of the radish and the nutty pumpkin seeds were great in this dish though! Fennel cornmeal biscotti, rhubarb compote, cream: This was a single biscotti with generous dollops of compote and cream. We were quite full when this dish was set in front of us, so I was frankly relieved for the small portion size. The fennel in the biscotti paired wonderfully with the tart rhubarb, and the rich cream rounded things out nicely without tipping into cloying territory. The savory cornmeal complimented the fennel and provided additional depth of flavor. A great small bite to end on! Overall, Spencer's strong fundamentals allow them to take risks with in-season local produce. Some things worked for me and some didn't, but I would love to come back to see what they can create next!
