We got Friday night takeout from Tuptim and it was delicious! I ordered the See Ew, my husband got the massaman curry (kinda like a coconut chicken curry) and we got the spring rolls to split. The sauce that came with the rolls was a heavy ginger flavor but not too sweet and paired nicely with the rolls, which were crispy and flavorful inside. My See Ew included chicken and was very tasty, with several different vegetables included. I ordered it mild, but my mouth was on fire haha. I guess that's what you can expect from Thai seasoning. What ever you do - never request very hot spice at Tuptim Thai!!! I made that near fatal error about a year ago while having lunch with my kid brother. It took nearly a full day for my tongue & mouth to recover. Must admit the endorphin release was extraordinary. Understood they are moving across the street to a space which will double their seating capacity. This speck of Thai cuisine has grown to accommodate a huge following. Incredible Thai food experience here. I sincerely enjoy the wonton egg noodle soup! It had a great flavor and it was very filling. The tilapia and eggplant was good too. I also want to highlight the spring rolls! The restaurant has been there a long time is a small quaint environment. The waitstaff is nice and very attentive. This is a family-run restaurant with a casual, family-style atmosphere. One thing I noticed on the menu is that they ask for an 18% tip, which honestly made me feel a little pressured. . I always believe tips are depending on what kind of service I get with the servers. Customer is not hold responsible to pay extra when you get shit ass service if anyone agreed? This was my first time eating here, but based on my experience, I don't think I'll be coming back. Price & Portions: The prices are pretty reasonable for some items, and the portion sizes are fair for what you pay. Tom Yum Tofu: I ordered the tom yum tofu. It was a small bowl, and the soup tasted more sweet and salty than sour. I couldn't really taste the usual sourness I expect from tom yum, and there was also a noticeable turmeric-like smell. There were only tofu and about six slices of mushrooms. Pad See Ew: The noodles were sweet, but I didn't get that smoky wok-fried flavor I usually look for. It tasted more like the ingredients had simply been mixed together in a wok. Drunken Noodles: This one was definitely unusual. The sauce was lightly red, very wet, and completely different from the drunken noodles I've had at other Thai restaurants. I've tried Thai food at many different places, and I've never had it prepared quite this way. Luckily, I didn't order anything else. We started with the Chicken Satay, which was delicious, but the real star was the peanut sauce. It was rich, flavorful, and honestly one of the best peanut sauces I've had at a Thai restaurant. For the main dishes, we ordered the Green Curry, Thai Basil Fried Rice, and Pad Thai. Every dish was outstanding. The Green Curry was perfectly balanced with great flavor and just the right amount of spice. The Thai Basil Fried Rice was fresh, aromatic, and packed with flavor. The Pad Thai was absolutely delicious and had the perfect combination of sweetness, tanginess, and texture. Overall ok across a variety of dishes. Curries are spot on. Penang is my favorite. If you're a Pad Thai fan, I'd have to go elsewhere. Way too sweet after several tries. The sauce is literally the sweet/sour sauce served with the spring rolls. Stick with the curries and stir fries. Present building is pretty beat up on the outside. I had heard that Tuptim was the best Thai food in Ann Arbor and upon looking at the menu I was super skeptical... I mean hot and sour soup? Sesame chicken? You cannot convince me that this is an authentic Thai restaurant. With that said, I suspended disbelief to order the khao soi which is my favourite Thai dish. I ordered it with beef and selected extra hot as my preference. Being a northern Thai dish, Khao soi is generally spicy as is so I was a bit worried that I was in over my head. The dish? Not Khao soi, and certainly not even remotely close to not let alone extra hot let alone Thai hot. For context, my parents wouldn't touch tabasco with a 10 foot pole and were able to eat it fine. Every time I go to San Francisco I make sure I have a meal at Burma Superstar for my favorite dish, Khao Soi, a coconut curry based soup with noodles and chicken (that I've since learned is a favorite in northern Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar). I've struggled to find it locally but after some searching found it on the menu at Tuptim Thai under the spelling "Kow Soy." I new I had to have it! Now, it's a bit different, of course, from the one I had in SF but it definitely fulfills my cravings here in MI. The noodles were perfectly prepared, the coconut curry was flavorful, and there was a decent amount of chicken in the mix. I also added potatoes to mine (not how I had it in SF but I figured I'd try it, it was a good addition). I wish it had the crunchy fried noodles that I've had with the dish in other places but I'll definitely be ordering this again. This place is on my way home from work, so I pick up take out regularly. I decided to try the mee sua recently and asked for no bean sprouts and extra carrots. Heck, whenever we are trying to decide on a place to eat, Tuptim is usually one of the suggested restaurants. My go-to is the yellow curry with chicken. It's a bit expensive ($15), but the portions are big enough for me to separate it into a couple meals - three if I'm eating a bunch of rice to save money, lol. They give you a good amount of protein and potatoes. Honestly, the curry is so flavorful - lots of spices and the subtle coconut milk flavor just enhances everything. Located on Washtenaw Ave just before Golfside as you approach Ypsilanti, it's currently open for carry out only. That was perfect, as it made ordering my lunch and picking it up a snap. I perused the menu and decided on Beef Pad Thai. When I called in my order, the employee asked me about spice level. YpsiReal had warned that the spices here are no joke, so I opted for "mild plus". 10 minutes later I was picking up my meal from their convenient outdoor station. I paid contactless via Clover and headed home to enjoy my lunch. The verdict? It's a winner! And it's spicy. I like a little heat, but take my word for it, this place is no joke, so order accordingly.
