Food is great and price is right for a weekly work lunch highly suggest you try it out

Joyful house is no longer joyful. The food it tasteless and mushy. We had the "pan fried noodles" with seafood the orange chicken and fried pot stickers. The pot stickers were fine. The "pan fried noodles" were just canned crispy noodles that became mush in the dish. The orange chicken was bland and was not crispy. Neither dish had any sauce. I loved joyful house for the past 20 years. This food is nothing like you would get from the previous owners. read more

Food has changed drastically since the change in ownership. Entrees are often very mushy and bland. Even the egg rolls have an unusual taste. Once one of our favorite restaurants, after trying a few times we'll be in search of a new Chinese Cuisine spot. read more

I guess Joyful House is under new ownership. Since that change, the food is just not good. My wife and I got some dumplings and fried rice. The rice is ok, not great. The dumplings, however, are now no different than the crappy ones you can just buy in a grocery store. read more

I live in Detroit and we have good Chinese in my area.... well this night I was not at home I was visiting my sister for a girls weekend. We picked this place for our meal and when I tell you I went to bed so hungry and upset. We paid 80$$ for BS. When we first walked in no one was upfront to greets us or anything when they did come not very helpful. We only had three meals and some egg rolls how we got to 80 is beyond me but we had to eat.... so I thought. smh was very upset when we got out food home. It was food that was cooked no flavour or anything. None of us ate that night not even the dog wanted to eat it. Will not be back. read more

I LOVED JOYFUL HOUSE. Went there for many many years. Swore it was the best Chinese place in the county. Unfortunately the previous owners of 20yrs had to go home to Taiwan. The switch of hands has left me severely disappointed. It was so hard to find delicious kung pao chicken ANYWHERE. I got takeout when they first took over, disappointed. Watery, and bland with so much Garlic. Came in today with my family as it's tradition while passing through Saline. I told the young girl that I was disappointed the last time I came in and she said they are the new owners. Yeah, I know girly. They messed up kung pao chicken. With pre made spring rolls Looks like I'm gonna have to start making it for myself now. RIP Joyful house. You will be missed. At least they have a tv now. read more

NEW OWNERS!!!! First time being here this year and when we arrived we were greeted with new face. The dining room has been updated and looks great. I asked if something happened or changed and the waitress told me no. Realized the menu was different and started praying the food wasn't. Well my prayers were NOT answered. HUGE changes in every dish we had and not for the better. The previous owners built such a huge clientele and these new owners made too many changes to maintain it. Unfortunately we will not be back. It changed hands in February or march of 2026. New decor and an entirely new menu. It's not that great and sort of lacks flavor. It's scratches an itch but not sure I'd go out of the way for it. read more

Under new management! Previous owners took the flavor with them when they left. We have been a customers for 15 years, our go to place. The place was painted and moved around a bit but the problem was with the food. We ordered our usual Szechuan tofu and Pork with broccoli. Both ended up in the trash. read more

Alright, I was honestly very very skeptical and did not want to try Joyful House, but my husband did. But, I'm so glad we did! My SoCal born & raised self cannot believe they have 两面黄!! It's their pan fried noodles but it's fried & there are crispy crunchies on the outside (my favorite). I grew up eating this at the Cantonese cafes in the 626 and damn, it brought me back. I was so happy!! I also ordered the 榨菜肉丝湯麵 (Pork and cabbage noodle soup) - also a childhood classic for me! The noodles reminded me of the quick dinners my mom used to throw together after a long work day. My husband ordered the beef broccoli and enjoyed it! I was also really pleasantly surprised by their hot & sour soup. Awesome that this spot is so close to us so I don't have to trek all the way out to Lan City if I want a noodle fix. I also shamelessly love Americanized Chinese food (see: orange chicken, kung pao chicken) so I also appreciate that it can be 2 in 1!! read more

This review is only for the hot and sour soup. It was very bland and lacked the sourness and "hot" - the spice. Ended up adding more seasoning to make it work for me. Still looking for a place that has the best hot and sour soup. read more

Awesome little place in quiet Saline. Good food (I gauge the Chinese restaurant by their hot & sour soup...if that's good, everything else should be on par). Owned and run by the nicest couple. Also, it's priced fairly as over the years they have made enough money, and that they just want to take care of their customers before retiring. Which I thought it was very noble. read more

The food quantity for a $17 sweet and sour shrimp combo was terrible and no egg roll included. I shouldn't have to drop $20+ dollars to get generic chinese food and still be hungry at the end. Did not feel like money well spent. read more

I ordered General Tso's Chicken takeout for lunch and asked for it to be very spicy with extra broccoli. I did get extra broccoli but it was at the expense of the chicken which had little flavor. I guess the very spicy meant they added a one inch piece of red chili pepper that did little to add spice, heat, or flavor. I think I counted about 10 or 12 small pieces of chicken with about 8 little pieces of broccoli sitting in an inch of some sort of liquid that was all over the outside of the container too. It's a good thing it was in a plastic bag or that reddish brown watery liquid would have stained my car seat. The styrofoam container had dividers in it so the amount of food was deceiving, let's just say it was not a lot of food like you get from other Chinese restaurants. The two small sections were barely filled with fried rice which again had little flavor. Then there was this crab cream cheese rangoon that had no crab in it or even krab. All this for ten bucks plus a tip. Little flavor, little food, for too much money. Come on, rice is cheap and I didn't ask to substitute broccoli for the chicken, I asked for and paid an extra dollar for EXTRA broccoli. I haven't been at the Joyful House for about six years because my first experience with them was so bad. It will be at least six more years before I try them again. My suggestion is if you want better Chinese food to keep driving west past downtown Saline and get your food from Gui Lin, it's cheaper, better tasting, and you get much more for your money. I don't see how they got a four star rating, at least I didn't feel sick after eating there like I did years ago. read more

We ordered for the first time last night and got the sesame chicken, fried dumplings and crab Rangoon. The sesame chicken was out of this world!! Some of the best, if not the best, chinese food that I've ever had. We will definitely be back!! read more

Definitely a place for takeout. The interior is near barren and harshly lit, the carpet heavily worn, the tables chipped, and a slightly rancid odor hangs in the air. But once you're out the door, you'll probably be planning a return. I only have the kung pao chicken and the Szechuan spicy beef to judge them on at this point, but these stuck me as well done renditions of American Chinese food. The vegetables were crisp, the meat tender and well trimmed, and the sauces were not too sweet. Peanuts in the kung pao were still crunchy. I forgot to request a level of spiciness, but the dishes came in at what I thought was a perfect medium-hot. Portions were generous--we got two lunches out of what we didn't eat. The main reason we got food here is because we were visiting the Stony Lake brewery in the same plaza and wanted something to eat with our beers, we didn't want to drive far to pick it up, and didn't feel like pizza. So Joyful House might have been a default choice, but one that pleased us nonetheless. read more

About 8-10 years ago this place was absolutely amazing! The portions were huge and the value was incredible. They've really gone downhill. They essentially cut the restaurant in half so there's only a few tables. The tables are so close together you can hear everyone else's conversations. The food now is so overpriced and just doesn't have the quality it used to. read more

Consistent quality and clean flavor keeps us coming back. A lot of American Chinese favorites on the menu but plenty of more traditional dishes are well worth the try as well. Vegetables are brightly colored and cooked fast so they retain their flavor and texture, the meat is never tough and the shapes are very easy to pick up with chopsticks. Linger over your meal, it is more enjoyable that way! read more

Joyful House is hands down the best Chinese place in Saline. I've eaten at a few places around town and this one beats them all. Best of all, the food is consistent. I've eaten here at least a dozen times and the food is always delicious. I remember Joyful House when it was a larger restaurant, complete with a buffet. The restaurant has since downsized, with a fair number of tables and a pleasant eating environment. Most tables are set for two, and as a family of seven we do have to combine some tables but it isn't too much of an issue. My go-to dish is chicken lo mein, but I'll often get chicken with mixed vegetables as well. I judge every place by how well they make these two dishes, and Joyful House really nails both. The lo mein always has tender chicken with the perfect amount of flavor; never too salty or too bland. The chicken with mixed vegetables has the perfect variety of vegetables, and the sauce is outstanding. The rice is always perfectly cooked as well. Tonight I ordered a lo mein with hot-and-sour soup, fried pork dumblings and crab rangoons. Everything was delicious, and for around $25, it was a great meal. I've yet to find a restaurant in Saline or even Ann Arbor that makes better chinese than Joyful House. I'm confident in saying that no matter what you order, you'll enjoy. read more

Bland but edible Chinese luncheon standards. My friend wanted to go there for lunch because she hadn't been there in a while. I had never been there before. I'm unlikely to ever go back. I could not help but notice the backpack and pile of mail that seemed to belong to the lady running the place, occupying the larger table at the back. I got egg drop soup. Lots of egg, but the clear broth was quite viscous. Hmmm, is the broth mostly corn starch and water? My friend got wonton soup. She had huge wontons in her soup. Had to cut them up. The bowl of crispy wonton pieces (for a garnish) was cold and the oil had already made them soggy. I could only nibble a couple small pieces. Ew. My friend got General Tso's chicken. Mostly chicken and a couple of pieces of broccoli. I was going to get chicken and broccoli, but I spied chicken and garlic below that, in red letters, which usually denote a spicy dish. What arrived was bland. The sauce was brown from soy sauce and faintly sweet, with no hints of either garlic or hot spice. The chicken was OK. Pounded thin. The pieces of green pepper were not as green as I would have liked - a bit tired, if you ask me - and were cut too large to eat easily. Usually Chinese chefs get this right. Blah fried rice with puckered peas and a crab rangoon on the side. Lunch was $7.25. You get a decent amount but I felt like something was missing. The flavor. read more

When you compare Joyful House to restaurants in general, this takeout place is probably a three star... but when you compare it to the restaurants in the area and compare it to the other Chinese take out place(s) in the area, it's a 4. That's because the only other Chinese take out place is Best China by the WalMart and it's low quality, high quantity cheap Chinese food. Joyful House is a little higher in quality and consistency, but you pay for it (an extra dollar or two or so on lunch specials). The General's Tso's chicken which is the basic standard by which you can compare take out chinese, is good. Definitely better meat than the Best China fodder they use. The sauce is sweet though, and you definitely need to ask for spicier. The lunch combo also does come with a crab rangoon which I like better than mystery-filled egg rolls. I have not tried anything else just yet, but I would not be opposed to it. Above all, yes, it's worth the extra 2 dollars for a higher quality meal. You also get less fried rice than at Best China, so not really enough for leftovers at all, but sometimes its better to have a better tasting, less gristly product. Don't expect more than your standard Chinese take out or delivery place and you won't be disappointed. read more

Takeout for dinner tonight! We got 2 General Tsao chicken, 1 extra spicy. Promised and delivered in 15 minutes. The extra spicy was delightfully extra spicy. I realized as I was eating tonight, my favorite thing about GT from Joyful House is how it is lightly breaded, more like rolled in flour and flash fried than breaded or battered. At $12/pop, it's not the cheapest Chinese around (that's $12 for the entree...no egg roll or anything), but it's perfect for us. read more
