Cumin beef with cilantro, garlic string beans, rice noodles with shrimp, pan fried veggie buns, and Shanghai style pork buns
    Katy C.

I'm so happy I got to experience Evergreen with the one and only Detroit CM Annette! We met up for an early dinner recently and had some delicious food and great conversation. The space is nice and bright and I loved the cute mural in the entryway. Menus are on tablets which makes it easy to see photos of each dish, which we cross-referenced with Yelp to pick the popular items. We ordered the cumin beef with cilantro, pan-fried veggie buns, Shanghai style pork buns, garlic string beans, and rice noodles with shrimp. They have a full bar but we stuck with water. Our server was great at confirming which items we ordered. I appreciated the pacing of the serving of each of the rounds of food, starting with our appetizers which we ordered first. (This doesn't always end up happening so it's worth mentioning!) I loved the Shanghai style pork buns, which actually seemed like xiao long bao or soup dumplings. I LOVE a good XLB so that was fun. The pan-fried veggie buns were interesting and seemed healthy, though I probably wouldn't order them again (though they did come six to an order so great for sharing). The garlic string beans were a highlight for me - perfectly crisp-tender and savory and garlicky... yum! I also loved the cumin beef, which is a favorite dish of mine. This wasn't super spicy but very flavorful and the beef was tender. The rice noodles with shrimp was a mild dish and delicately flavored. The shrimp was nicely cooked and it's always fun to try a noodle dish! Waters were refilled consistently and paying was easy at the table. No free fortune cookies here, but that's totally fine by me. I will say that this is a popular area with lots of great local spots nearby so parking can be a bit tricky - I was able to find a metered spot a few blocks away. I'll be back!

4.5 stars! This is probably the most healthy Chinese take out type joint in town. This was our first trip to Evergreen and we're told it's the best Chinese in Ann Arbor. I appreciated that the menu wasn't endless like most take out places and they had some fun twists on the menu, like curried kabobs and spicy sesame chicken. I was pleasantly surprised that the food didn't feel as heavy as most places, but it still had the distinct taste of Chinese takeout. I am still searching for the perfect crab Rangoon (so far an unassuming place in rural Illinois has the CR of my dreams) replacement, and though it was good, it wasn't the best in Ann Arbor. I *did* feel so much better about feeding my kids Evergreen though. The veggies were fresh and delicious. Their website is awesome. It lists lots of gluten free options and the exact steps it takes to prevent allergen contamination. I truly appreciate that! I was floored by the careful consideration of design in the restaurant. It's trendy, with neat mood lighting and just stunning. There are hand painted native animals on the walls and the outside is visually beautiful too. I can't wait to try more things on the menu- specifically the braised pork ribs, lo mein, and ginger chicken with green beans. I liked the deluxe fried rice a lot, though I thought there could have been more protein. I noticed that it is much cleaner, as in less greasy/ oily than other takeout joints and I greatly appreciated this. Potstickers were yummy, but somewhat plain and standard. Everyone in the house greatly enjoyed the beef and broccoli. Overall, this place is fantastic and I can't wait to try more of the menu.

This is a smaller version of the Evergreen on Plymouth Road, and as such it has a limited amount of menu choices. I ordered the Chicken w/Mixed Vegetables in a Ginger& Garlic Sauce, with Wonton Soup and Fried Rice for $14 from the Luncheon Menu. The order arrived quickly. Unfortunately, the entree was delivered at the same time as the soup. So the the soup was getting cold as I dug into the entree. The entree was OK, pretty much standard "Americanized" Chinese food. The Wonton Soup had 2 wontons in it, and the fried rice was filling. It was an OK pit stop during the AA Art Fair. Service was polite, quick and courteous. Bathroom was spotless and odor free.

Very decent Chinese food at a reasonable price. I ordered the sesame chicken with white rice for $15 and the hot and sour soup for $3. The hot and sour soup wasn't my favorite - it was a bit lacking in flavour and I would have preferred a less brothy soup. However, the sesame chicken was really delicious and tender. The white rice was a little gummy but a generous portion. I ordered the chicken with extra sauce and it wasn't overly saucy, but whatever. My parents both tried the chicken and commented that they really liked it, so overall this place was a pretty big crowd pleaser. Not sure if they do any lunch specials at a discount but I'd be interested in looking into that. Might be my new go-to Chinese restaurant.

This family-owned Chinese restaurant is serving up authentic, delicious food and they have so many great options for vegetarians and vegans. It's located right downtown on Liberty so you can street park or choose one of the many lots nearby. It's right by Bills Beer Garden and Blank Slate so really the location is primo! I ordered a bit of everything. Their jasmine green tea was so warming and smooth. The scallion pancakes were THE BEST. Loved the veggie buns and dumplings too. The MaPo tofu was made vegan for us and it was delicious and hearty. Loved the eggplant and tofu casserole. Don't forget the noodles! Everything was just so good. The service is some of the best I've had and nicest and the interior is super modern but has these zen moments. Just loved it. Definitely give these folks a try! It's like eating dinner with family!

I had been in this location previously and the new Evergreen space is so cute! The murals are so cute and you can tell that a lot of thought was put in to decorating. Staff are so friendly and helpful going over items on the menu and knew exactly which items could be made vegetarian or vegan. The food is so good. I'm not exaggerating. I thought about the scallion pancakes for like a week after going. I can't wait to visit again!

Good Chinese dishes with young people flair. Also good decorations. Location is a bit off the beaten path.

    Ma Po Tofu with Pork/

My new fav spot in town - the mapo tofu is heavenly spice filled deliciousness. The waitress said adding pork would add flavor and boy was she right! I drizzled it on top of my pork fried rice which tasted like it was straight out of the fire. They really got the smoky taste just right - it was like the wood fired char you would get from a perfect pizza crust. It didn't need any soy sauce or hot sauce or any extra condiments. Definitely coming here again

    Shrimp with Mixed Vegetables

We've eaten many times at their other location but this is our first time downtown. We had 3 dishes: Crispy Duck, Rice noodles with shrimp, and Shrimp with vegetables. The duck was over cooked but would have been nice cooked a little less. The rice noodles were okay but lacked flavor, and shrimp with vegetables needed more depth to the sauce. Would have given them a 3.5. Service was friendly. Ambience is nice and has a clean aesthetic.

Cool spot located in Ann Arbor. Vegetarian/vegan friendly. I am an Asian food snob and I found this spot pretty good. We ordered hot and sour soup, garlic string bean, eggplant stir fry, kung pao tofu, salt and pepper tofu, and tofu & mixed vegetables, and vegetable lo mein. All the dishes were extremely flavorful and tasty, but my favorites in particular were the eggplant stir fry and Kung pao tofu. Everything tasted fresh. Only complaint was I wish the food/soup was served piping hot. The inside is also very cute. Would def come back here again!

The host was responsive. The food came out of the kitchen incredibly fast. It had that hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant feel. But that's about it. That's the 2 stars. The hot and sour soup got the taste balance and broth right but the ingredients were a disappointment, too much tofu, too much egg, not enough wood ear and/or black mushrooms, scandalously few shredded bamboo shoots (which also clearly came from a can). The wok hei for the mu shu pork was not good; too greasy and again, the ingredients were really inadequate (way too many onions, zero cabbage, scant protein). The hoisin sauce clearly came out of a bottle (way too sweet and flat) and here's the death blow - thick flour tortillas, not those thin Mandarin pancakes. I mean, the thinness of the pancake is the whole point - it is NOT a "Chinese burrito" (a phrase that is an insult to burritos, mind you). The last dish was ma po tofu. For me, a good ma po tofu is all about flavor balance - do you understand between straight up heat from the chili and the numbing of Sichuan peppercorns? They do not understand, this was so overwhelmingly peppercorn that it seemed pretty apparent that someone just equated "hot" with peppercorn and then added chili oil. Again, scant protein. I usually give a place a couple tries because anyone can have an off day. I won't be back. This is a kitchen quality problem, not an off day.

Not sure, but I was excited to come here and try the food. It was a thousand out of ten. We ordered so much, the server was in shock, but we reassured her we were taking most home. I also feel like I should comment on food waste. I am the leftover queen, and this amount of food supplied ten portions (meals) for us over time and was completely finished. I saw they had two locations, but I decided to try the Ypsilanti location. The people working here were very friendly and helpful. I basically ordered half of the appetizer section since there was so much delicious choices to try. I had the sticky rice shumai, roti with curry, spicy wantons, pan fried pork buns, chicken egg rolls, crispy pork lion roll, and Korean wings (not pictured since I got an additional carry-out for my kid). We also ordered Dan Dan noodles , pad Thai, and sesame chicken. The food was all so delicious. The Dan Dan noodles were the best I have had in a long time. I love that it was not too spicy, the egg was a great addition, and I do like cilantro. The sesame chicken was huge and so crispy. I liked the pad Thai, but my husband was a bit disappointed and felt it needed a little more spice or flavor. The portions were huge, which is how we got so many meals out of the food. I loved the spicy oil on the wantons. The pan fried bus were amazing, fluffy with a slight crisp. the Korean wings had a great flavor and I liked the shumai a lot. I love how chewy the roti was, the sauce could have been thicker, but I enjoyed the curry. Everything was so good, I am not sure what I liked the most. It was an adorable place with huge portions and good prices. I really hope to stop back in again, and yes, I will probably order a ton again to enjoy there as well as at home.

Now on to the food! My favorite thing we ordered was the Leshan Beef soup, so comforting, warming, and flavorful! Xiao, the owner, was kind enough to teach us how to best enjoy it which was to first take a sip of the broth, have some of the veggies, then dip the beef into the chili powder. The billionaires fried rice was unfortunately a bit under seasoned but at least the portion size was quite generous. The mapo tofu was very authentic and the numbing spice they used was top notch, although Xiao did mention that they would hopefully be moving towards using a more tender cut of tofu than the medium/hard tofu they're currently using which I think would be delightful. The snowflakes dumplings were good although I question how well the crispness of the dumpling lace will hold up during carry out considering we got to have these fresh.
