77. General Tso's Chicken
Jessica C.

Plenty of parking and very limited seating (about 3 tables) because most people order out. It was also warm inside. The employees are all friendly. I ordered the Chicken Pad Thai after someone recommended it and it was awful. It was a pinkish color and flavor was just ok. Did not taste authentic. The General Tso Chicken was pretty good and the fried rice. Overall, it is ok.

I must love this place because they know me by name now when I call in my carry out order I used to be loyal to another spot about a mile away, but after a string of disappointing dining experiences there, I decided to revisit King Shing. I'm glad I did, because now I have a staple Chinese restaurant close to home! My latest discovery that I love here is their pad Thai. Delicious with huge portion sizes and very reasonably priced, I almost wish I hadn't discovered it because now I am hooked! Food is always ready very quickly when I call in and the employees are friendly. I usually pick up and enjoy at home, which this place is perfect for. Check it out and see just how much you enjoy King Shing too!

we got takeout. the food is hot and fresh and reasonably priced! Overall, a good experience, We would return

This is a family business with really good American Chinese food, at a very, very good price. I eat here at least once a week.

The host was responsive. The food came out of the kitchen incredibly fast. It had that hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant feel. But that's about it. That's the 2 stars. The hot and sour soup got the taste balance and broth right but the ingredients were a disappointment, too much tofu, too much egg, not enough wood ear and/or black mushrooms, scandalously few shredded bamboo shoots (which also clearly came from a can). The wok hei for the mu shu pork was not good; too greasy and again, the ingredients were really inadequate (way too many onions, zero cabbage, scant protein). The hoisin sauce clearly came out of a bottle (way too sweet and flat) and here's the death blow - thick flour tortillas, not those thin Mandarin pancakes. I mean, the thinness of the pancake is the whole point - it is NOT a "Chinese burrito" (a phrase that is an insult to burritos, mind you). The last dish was ma po tofu. For me, a good ma po tofu is all about flavor balance - do you understand between straight up heat from the chili and the numbing of Sichuan peppercorns? They do not understand, this was so overwhelmingly peppercorn that it seemed pretty apparent that someone just equated "hot" with peppercorn and then added chili oil. Again, scant protein. I usually give a place a couple tries because anyone can have an off day. I won't be back. This is a kitchen quality problem, not an off day.

It was a thousand out of ten. We ordered so much, the server was in shock, but we reassured her we were taking most home. I also feel like I should comment on food waste. I am the leftover queen, and this amount of food supplied ten portions (meals) for us over time and was completely finished. I saw they had two locations, but I decided to try the Ypsilanti location. The people working here were very friendly and helpful. I basically ordered half of the appetizer section since there was so much delicious choices to try. I had the sticky rice shumai, roti with curry, spicy wantons, pan fried pork buns, chicken egg rolls, crispy pork lion roll, and Korean wings (not pictured since I got an additional carry-out for my kid). We also ordered Dan Dan noodles , pad Thai, and sesame chicken. The food was all so delicious. The Dan Dan noodles were the best I have had in a long time. I love that it was not too spicy, the egg was a great addition, and I do like cilantro. The sesame chicken was huge and so crispy. I liked the pad Thai, but my husband was a bit disappointed and felt it needed a little more spice or flavor. The portions were huge, which is how we got so many meals out of the food. I loved the spicy oil on the wantons. The pan fried bus were amazing, fluffy with a slight crisp. the Korean wings had a great flavor and I liked the shumai a lot. I love how chewy the roti was, the sauce could have been thicker, but I enjoyed the curry. Everything was so good, I am not sure what I liked the most. It was an adorable place with huge portions and good prices. I really hope to stop back in again, and yes, I will probably order a ton again to enjoy there as well as at home.

I recommend the soups - I love the beef and radish soup and the miso soup. The bao buns are large and filling. I like that there is an option for contactless order and that there are utensils and napkins for patrons along with free chili oil to pack up in small containers for takeout. Many restaurants today are charging for chili oil and even utensils, which I find to be absurd. There is lemon water for patrons to serve themselves as well. The buns are light with amazing fillings. Chicken and mushroom is my favorite. When the beef radish soup is in season, I have to get it every time. It's my favorite. The new menu items are a huge hit. Don't be shy on the chili oil. If you can handle a fair heat, then you'll love them. Angry red but not that spicy. The bbq pork belly boa is to die for and Jessi can make you whatever bubble tea you like. (I don't like a lot of sugar) Don't sleep on this place. It's popular for a reason. Gai's Kitchen is located inside of Bethlehem Church and when they say kitchen, they really mean it, there's no dine in or host stand to place an order haha. Despite this though, my friend and I were allowed to eat here in the church cafeteria adjacent to the kitchen after stumbling our way into the church and placing our order online, but just so everyone is aware this is for pickup, take out or DoorDash really. Now on to the food! My favorite thing we ordered was the Leshan Beef soup, so comforting, warming, and flavorful! Xiao, the owner, was kind enough to teach us how to best enjoy it which was to first take a sip of the broth, have some of the veggies, then dip the beef into the chili powder. The billionaires fried rice was unfortunately a bit under seasoned but at least the portion size was quite generous. The mapo tofu was very authentic and the numbing spice they used was top notch, although Xiao did mention that they would hopefully be moving towards using a more tender cut of tofu than the medium/hard tofu they're currently using which I think would be delightful. The snowflakes dumplings were good although I question how well the crispness of the dumpling lace will hold up during carry out considering we got to have these fresh. All in all very promising and authentic, I'm excited to see what else might make it onto the menu and how things might still improve from here, they're working out some kinks with the soft opening and they've only been open for 2 weeks!
