I am new to the Ann Arbor area and coming from Southern California so I have a baseline of really good Chinese food. This was not it. I should have listened to the average rating. The host was responsive. The food came out of the kitchen incredibly fast. It had that hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant feel. But that's about it. That's the 2 stars. The hot and sour soup got the taste balance and broth right but the ingredients were a disappointment, too much tofu, too much egg, not enough wood ear and/or black mushrooms, scandalously few shredded bamboo shoots (which also clearly came from a can). The wok hei for the mu shu pork was not good; too greasy and again, the ingredients were really inadequate (way too many onions, zero cabbage, scant protein). The hoisin sauce clearly came out of a bottle (way too sweet and flat) and here's the death blow - thick flour tortillas, not those thin Mandarin pancakes. I mean, the thinness of the pancake is the whole point - it is NOT a "Chinese burrito" (a phrase that is an insult to burritos, mind you). The last dish was ma po tofu. For me, a good ma po tofu is all about flavor balance - do you understand between straight up heat from the chili and the numbing of Sichuan peppercorns? They do not understand, this was so overwhelmingly peppercorn that it seemed pretty apparent that someone just equated "hot" with peppercorn and then added chili oil. Again, scant protein. I usually give a place a couple tries because anyone can have an off day. I won't be back. This is a kitchen quality problem, not an off day. read more

I have been a few times now and always go with a couple people we order different things every time and consistently everything has been very good, also very inexpensive. TK Wu has been around for 15 years, if not more - I used to eat there when I was a UM undergrad. My parents and I were looking for a reasonably-priced place to eat lunch today since I was in town for a doctor's appointment and so I suggested TK Wu. Yelp says that they open at 11 but it's actually 11:30am. We walked in the door at 11:15 a.m. and the waiter let us sit and peruse the menus until they actually opened, which was nice of him. Lunch specials range from like $7.99-8.99 and you get HUGE portions. I remembered liking the Princess chicken but I can't really do spice anymore, so the waiter had it made with mild spice for me. I also had the wonton soup and a spring roll - all of the lunch combos come with your choice of soup, a spring roll, and white or fried rice. The chicken was very good and came with some vegetables, as well; however, I actually liked my mom's sesame chicken more. The fried rice was just okay. Some of the dishes that people around us had ordered also looked very good, there was one dish with meat and tortillas that I'm curious about. My mom was ogling the vegetable dish that another table ordered, too. Overall this isn't the best Chinese food I've ever had, but for a quick and cheap lunch I would come back here. This was my first and last time ordering from TK Wu. I'm baffled by the mu shu I got. For over 45 years I've ordered this at many different restaurants and it always had cabbage and woods ear mushrooms as well as various vegetables. Not at this place. Thick barely cooked carrots and onions were the major ingredients in the dish, along with an overwhelming amount of oil. I threw out half because it just wasn't tasty. The spring roll was extra greasy and to my surprise it was 90% hollow with what looked like a smear of vegetables inside. Go to evergreen where the food is authentic and delicious. read more

My partner really had their eyes set on this place. I like that they have their menu displayed at the window, so you can get an idea of what they specialize in etc. I wasn't particularly sold on this place because I'm so picky when it comes to Chinese food. Their sign did say to enter with a mask, my partner didn't have one, and I only had mine that I did wear. They were so friendly to us and greeted us right away regardless and didn't make it a big deal which I can appreciate. They had their lunch specials going on which is a really decent price and a good portion of food too. I love a place that has affordable meals especially since it's right by the college campus, and they also give that price to everyone regardless of student status. I'll say this it's definitely a slightly better quality and version of a Panda Express or a PF Chang's. It's definitely Americanized Chinese food with some traditional dishes. I was a bit disappointed that their Princess Chicken isn't like the ones you get from a Cantonese style barbecue place where they give you ginger scallion sauce to dip your chicken in. They gave it to me in stir fry format, drenched in spicy sauce, and the fried rice quality wasn't good -- it was pretty bland and wasn't fragrant. I'll give them this -- they did a great job with that menu to make it seem like it's way better than what it is. My dish should've been called something along the lines of Stir Fry Princess Chicken over rice with sauce. I like that the meal did come with an egg roll and a wonton soup. The wonton soup broth was everything I needed and more, and the wonton meal wasn't tender but it did look like they hand wrapped it though. My partner ordered their mixed vegetables in garlic sauce and liked the food and said in agreement that it's decent but not great. We're spoiled by traditional Chinese food and Chinatown in Chicago. This is probably great for what you can get near the university and in the city of Ann Arbor. We were in the area and decided to try this place based on someone's recommendation. Was a little skeptical about the prices that I thought was pricey based on what I saw in the menu, but we decided to dine in anyway. We ordered the vegetables with garlic sauce, the General Tso's tofu and Tofu Wide Noodles. We asked for no MSG, fish sauce, etc. which they accommodated to our preferences and when the food came out, I was pleased with the portions which was definitely worth the price for each dish and the dishes were delicious even with modifications per our request, which was a big plus for us being vegan. The restaurant looked nice, reminiscent of like places in Korea when my wife and I dated. The owner greeted us and was very polite and friendly as well as the other staff. I called a lunch order for pickup. When I got to the place they had my food ready. The lady that waited on me was nice and friendly. They are taken steps to keep people safe when coming into the restaurant. You must have your mask on to enter into the building. It tends to get busy during the main lunch and dinner hours so I suggest you to eat before or after the rush. I usually get my usual general tsao chicken. People I'm basic but it's really good. I would encourage you to try something more authentic, but if you can't... try general Tsao! It has a mix of sweet and spicy. It is good to go with a group of friends or to celebrate someone's birthday. Super disappointed. We went to celebrate an awesome mom and great grandma who has passed. We ordered American Chinese- she loved almond chicken and won ton soup. I grew up going to china town in California , a little restaurant, down a little alley in a basement shop where the business men argued and resolved issues over food. We Drank tea, ate fried shrimps, and egg rolls. We ordered egg rolls today but got cabbage filled spring rolls. We ordered won ton but the dumplings were so thick with 1/4 tsp of filling, no additional vegetables. The almond chicken was dry, as if it was precooked and then battered and cooked again. The broccoli beef had the same burnt tastes of all the mentioned dished. Fried shrimp is a strong tradition with us the pineapple shrimp- lots of puffy dough and two itty bitty bits of shrimp. I was looking forward to a positive experience because your Chinese menu at the back of the menu looked perfect. I just can't trust it now. I've never had worse. The customer service was excellent. This is my new favorite Chinese food spot in Ann Arbor. Service was fast, portions were ENORMOUS, and the flavors were authentic, bold, and complex. We ordered Lettuce wraps for the appetizer, Black pepper fish, Fried green beans, and Stir fried beef with wide noodles. It was so hard to pick a favorite since everything was fantastic.
