We ordered through Grubhub for delivery to St. Joe's and had a very good experience with that. The only downside with ordering through Grubhub is that you can't make notes to adjust spice levels. My mama ordered the kung pao shrimp and really enjoyed it and was pleased with the amount of shrimp in the dish. She would have liked it a little less spicy but it wasn't overpowering. I ordered the chicken fried rice and it was some of the best fried rice I've ever had. Not oily like some places I have had it and a good amount of chicken. I did plan on logging off early so I can run and maybe do some schoolwork but I ended up working late and did not run but at least I was able to finish 3 out of 4 of my assignments last night. I did not have time to go out to have dinner. I DoorDashed. I love chow fun but the beef was rather chewy and dry. It was tasty but it was rather oily and it became difficult to enjoy after a few bites. The scallion pancakes were paper thin, had barely any scallions, and extremely greasy. I was taught not to waste food and I was hungry from not eating all day. Yum yum. I have never even heard of this place! A friend invited me to enjoy this spot with her today and I was all in. The food was amazing. I love Chinese food and am always down for Chinese. Review for takeout on Christmas 12/25/2024 Below is what I sent to the restaurant's email address listed on their website - after 3 bounce back emails, I am posting here hoping they see it and take a good look at what they have changed in recent years. Evergreen was my go to, and after 1 or 2 poor experiences, I can forgive, but three and in a row... something is wrong. I was hoping to send them some feedback directly instead of posting publicly, but since contacting them via their post email didn't work, decided to post here. --- Evergreen used to be the best of the best in the area and I would tell people that Evergreen is the ONLY place to get good Chinese food in the area. After my last THREE orders, I cannot say I will order or recommend Evergreen anymore. The wonton soup was so simple and delicious with perfect wontons and just a smattering of fresh shredded lettuce. Now the broth is tasteless and wonton wrappers are either undercooked or stale. Like eating paper. The first time I brushed it off as a poor batch but three times in a row at two different locations, tells me the recipe has changed and I am telling you - it's very noticeable. The last straw was placing a pickup order online at 3pm for an advanced pickup time of 4:30 or 5pm. Not only did someone screw up and not check the online orders to get them started with the kitchen (according to the ladies at the front desk), it was an hour past our pick up time before my husband got our food and headed home. He drove all the way home to CHELSEA and upon opening the bag, found that his sweet and sour chicken had no sauce and the quart of wonton soup I ordered had no wonton chips that I also specifically ordered a large bag of chips. The worst part was how bad the soup was - again. It was the only thing I ordered for myself and now the two of us (out of four people) had no dinner on Christmas after spending two hours and $100 for this order. You cannot charge premium prices for poor quality and service. We can totally understand that it was busy and mistakes happened, but all of it together was too much. I returned on my own on 07/11/2025 and was seated immediately in a booth. I looked over the menu and chose a Lamb Skewer ($5) for an appetizer and the Cumin Lamb ($22) for my entree. The skewer was brought out quickly. It was CRUNCHY & SPICY on the outside, TENDER & JUICY on the inside. It was a DELICIOUS START. Next up was the entree with white rice. We've ordered several times from Evergreen now. My favorites are the Spicy Pot and the Leek Purse. All of the items that have a vegetable with them do NOT skimp on the veggies which is wonderful! I'm not saying they're healthy, but they will give you your micronutrients. The leek purse is very full of shrimp and leeks. The pancakes have a chewy greasy texture. Be careful eating the spicy pot. It literally has loads of spice pods in there. Chopsticks are probably best so that the spice pods fall away. The chicken is also cut straight through the bone so make sure you chew well to avoid any bone splinters or pay extra to get the deboned chicken. read more

A REVELATION! As an old people, we can remember the days when "great food" and "Chinese restaurant" were synonymous. But, over the past 50 years they seem to have raced to the bottom regarding food quality. If you long for the good old days, Evergreen serves delicious food and offers very good service. The four of us started with wines and sake (all very good), tempura shrimp (light as a feather and tasty) and crab rangoon (crispy flavorful). We ordered two entrees, cashew chicken and cumin lamb with white rice and sweet and sour sauce on the side. The chicken made me think of the awesome Chinese food I used to enjoy back when I was a student at UofM and the lamb was creative, fresh and delicious. I was in the area for business and I was craving good Chinese food. of course I turned to Yelp for advice and found Evergreen. I was not disappointed and removed the craving that I had very quickly. I sat at the bar which I typically do when I am traveling by myself. There bar was a little small and I ended up being the only customer there. No worries, still a great meal. So let's talk about the food. I started off with Pork Buns and they were really good. Good flavor and consistency of the buns. After devouring them, I had my main entree. Sunday afternoon at 3 pm visit: tried something different. I ordered 3 appetizers from the traditional Chinese menu. The rice dumplings with lamb(beef was another option) was I wrapped and tied in a banana leaf. The string was knotted down I tried to cut with knife then waitress rushed over to help. I ended up twisting the item several times to get it unwrapped. It really created a bit of a scene, but anyway was totally a deliciously sweet and savory sticky treat despite the complication. The oriental burger was surprisingly spicy (remember that you can ask for the desired spice level here)-- which I enjoyed with what was a very different "bun". Lastly, the three large home style buns were nearly up to the usual standard for this establishment--except the one that I ate seemed to be exhibiting a bit of that hardening that can happen with some flour concoctions that have been microwaved to warm up and then allowed to sit. On another visit to Ann Arbor, we decided to try Evergreen for lunch. It's located in a shopping plaza with parking lot availability. I liked the ambiance and decor, soft lighting, mirrors, and has booths and tables available. We ordered spring rolls, which I liked because they didn't have shrimp in them. We also had pot stickers that I was not a fan of but my husband liked. I just like a hint of ginger and these had a little more. For our entree, we ordered the evergreen double happiness. I would've rated it a 5 but it wasn't hot enough. I prefer my food steaming hot and it was lukewarm. I live about 15 min outside of Ann Arbor, but I don't mind a drive when I start craving Chinese food. I probably drive by a half dozen other places but when I say you should skip them all, I mean skip them ALL. Go directly to Evergreen, and go now! Everything I have had here is amazing. I actually haven't eaten inside. I get takeout on the app. Even though they were designed to he a sit down, they pivoted to add takeout during covid and have been going strong. I strongly recommend the pork rib spicy hot pot. I've also had the cumin lamb, agadashi tofu, egg drop soup, and the steak on a stick app. I recently discovered the whole lemon tea, and it was a whole lot of yum. Everything I have been ordered has been perfect, and I have been able to experiment without risk because the whole menu is spectacular. The name of the restaurant gives one no clue as to what it serves. It never occurred to me to even look until a CFP recommended it to me. Now it is in my restaurant rotation. The food is really much better than the usual Chinese rake-out places that abound in this area. I think it at the level of a NYC Chinatown restaurant. The sizzling rice soup is very flavorful and the vegetables tasted very fresh. The only disappointment is that the rice is not always as satisfyingly sizzling (likw like a flambe with a small flame). The noodles do not disappoint. The sauces are just right - not too watery nor too overwhelming. It took us a few seconds to realize one could not actually order through the tablet menus. One had to do it through the waitress. The restaurant's lighting is more on the subdued side, so unless one has good night vision, I would advice caution first walking in from bright sunlight. It is fine once the eyes get a chance to adjust to the light level. I found it strange that we were not offered chopsticks...cost saving measure? Also, the soup spoons were not the deep Asian style but the shallow Western metal style. Small details but it detracted from the experience - and from what I had grown used to. The service is usually good too, although sometimes we have to flag down an employee. In general, I wish they'd stop by the table more often. But the food is so good that I can live with it. I went to their downtown location for the first time last week, and I was very disappointed. My lunch was served warm, not hot, and the chicken fried rice I ordered to take home was under-cooked, dry, and tasteless. I won't be going back to the downtown location. In the past, Evergreen is usually about a 4/5 (a bit expensive, but typically pretty good food). Depending on what you're feeling, I'd recommend the following: * Beef Wide Noodle - One of their best dishes here, soft wide noodles, tasty and flavorful beef mixed with beansprouts that give it more crunch. Greasy and oily, but that's what makes this dish good. * Garlicky Green Beans - Another classic dish. It's full of garlic and incredibly tasty. Can't go wrong with this one. * Dry Pot - People love the "create your own" dry pot here! I've had it once and there's a lot of heat and spice. * Pork and century old egg congee - A bit watery, but overall, this is a great option if you're feeling a bit under the weather. It's tasty and flavorful, also perfect for a rainy day if you're not feeling noodles. However, today was a 3/5. Maybe my friend and I didn't get the right dishes? * Corn and chicken soup - Very subpar. It was just slightly enhanced egg drop soup in a large bowl with very few bits of corn and small chicken pieces. I felt like most bites of the soup was just watery egg drop soup (lots of MSG... because my mouth was super dry afterwards) and then occasionally there would be a couple kernels of corn and maaaaaybe a small piece of chicken. Overall, pretty bland and not worth $8.99. I could make this at home. * Taiwan style chicken - This was some chicken, mushrooms, onions, garlic, and ginger braised in a clay pot. It looked good, but again, it was bland. This is how I expect food to taste like if I had followed a recipe but left out half of the spices because I didn't have them at home. One thing you need to understand about Evergreen is that they are not supposed to be a typical "Chinese Takeout" place. Their description says "Fine Chinese" which is an indicator that they will probably be good at Authentic, sit-down type Chinese Food. If you're looking for authentic, traditional Chinese Food, this place is definitely ranked top 5 in all of Michigan (my family and I are Shanghainese). It brings me physical pain when someone leaves a crappy review here after getting sesame chicken and fried rice. They are seriously too high-end for that stuff. My suggestion: Do yourself a favor and skip the "regular" menu and choose something from the "traditional" menu. I recommend the Bamboo Shoots with Pork, Stewed Beef with Tendon, scallion pancakes (appetizer), any of the Spicy Pots, Chopped Pepper Fish, Ground Pork String Beans, Chinese Broccoli, etc read more
